‘Afghan Allies Resettlement Appeal’

7 days, one incredible response “Thank you” to everyone… An unprecedented humanitarian crisis has unfolded in Afghanistan and, in the aftermath of hurried evacuations, tens of thousands of Afghan families face a new life, forced to leave with nothing but the clothes on their back. After being approached by a Wellington family with a charitable relationship with the UK Special Forces, the Wellington College Community came together to donate, volunteer and create care packages providing clothing and starter kits full of everyday essentials.

May your troubles be less, your blessings be more and nothing but happiness now come through your door ‘To all the people who have volunteered and donated to this initiative I would like to say thank you’ James Dahl, Master of Wellington College

Over a busy seven days, the Wellington Community filled the Robin Dyer Centre with a huge amount, and an amazing variety of items including clothes, food, electrical equipment and bedding which was sorted into adult, children, home, age and placed into “Welcome Care Packages.” Our staff, parents and pupils joined forces to create a final number of 2,295 packages, which have now been distributed to Afghan Allies starting their new lives in the UK.

“every hour more items just arrived, the response from the first email was incredible…” Over 74,000 items donated and sorted by volunteers

480 educational items

25,336 adult clothing items

2,520 books

1,416 items of bedding

Additionally we would like to thank and acknowledge all those who kindly donated items. A special mention to Ron and Carol for enabling this initiative.

…the Robin Dyer Centre was the hub of operations There was an amazing level of professionalism brought to the operation and the hall was organised into sectors where different teams were managing different tasks. From box-making, to sorting, to folding and packing, logistics and holding – the whole event was a delight to watch as the teams all worked brilliantly alongside each other – all with a common goal and true spirit. The quality of the donations was also worthy of note, with the vast majority being new or nearly new.

‘Afghan Allies Resettlement Appeal’ ‘Through the Afghan Allies Appeal, Wellington College is trying to do its utmost to help those most in need. An important part of a Wellington College education is a commitment to service and helping others. Over the last seven days, this has been exemplified by the number of donations received and the volunteers that have worked tirelessly to help the Afghan families who have arrived in the UK and who have lost so much. At Wellington, we try to ensure our young people are learning, wherever possible, that they should serve and help shape a better world.’ James Dahl, Master of Wellington College

Thank you to The Big Yellow Self Storage Company for their kind donation of the boxes and tape.

Wellington College is trying to do its utmost to help those most in need.

This initiative was a perfect example of our Global Citizenship programme in action ‘The path of duty was the way to glory’ wrote Tennyson in his ode to the Duke of Wellington, and a commitment to service remains the foundation on which a Wellington education is built. From their first week at the school pupils are engaged in service activities, and the Wednesday afternoon Global Citizenship programme sees a whole host of activities which help pupils understand their role in the world, serve others and begin to lead positive change locally, nationally and internationally. Leadership is a key aspect of everything that Wellingtonians do — on the sports field, in CCF, academically, serving in the community, cocurricular activities and in the Arts. All pupils receive leadership training throughout their time at the school and many go on to take part in the exciting Global Social Leaders initiative. As well as the flourishing Combined Cadet Force, there is also the hugely popular Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme and a variety of adventurous and life-changing trips and expeditions are on offer every year. Each house has an adopted charity which gives all pupils the opportunity to make a significant difference to the lives of others. Wellingtonians quickly learn that they must be the change they want to see in the world.
