Building
Access to Care Project...
Clinic Construction Underway The first phase of construction is already underway on the Seven Oaks Access to Care Project. Work to renovate a portion of the existing hospital just west of the main entrance has been underway since December, with a second phase to build an innovative new medical clinic starting in March and projected to be ready to receive patients in the fall. Seven Oaks is pioneering a new integrated model of medical practice to connect the dots for patients between primary care, acute care and services for illness prevention, disease management and rehabilitation all under one roof. The clinic is being built to accommodate seven new family doctors. Once the physician group is in place, it will be up to those doctors to notify the community they are ready for patients.
1
One of the goals of the clinic is to improve access to primary care for the north part of Winnipeg by retaining more of the doctors that already train at Seven Oaks as part of the University of Manitoba Family Medicine Residents program at Kildonan Medical Centre. Some of the other unique aspects of the clinic include: • I ntegration with supports to prevent illness and hospitalization at the Wellness Institute • A stronger connection with medical residents training at Kildonan Medical Centre • C ontinuity between medical care in the community and in hospital Seven Oaks is working with Prairie Trails Medical Centre, a successful south Winnipeg medical practice,

Access to Care
which is advising on design and organization for the clinic as well as recruiting the doctors. The clinic is part of an overall $7 million project that will transform the front of the hospital into a two storey atrium that will be a new main entrance and gathering place. The third phase of construction, to build the atrium and extensively renovate the main level of the hospital with new food services, a pharmacy and gift shop, won’t get underway until late spring. Detailed plans for the atrium area, which will extend from the current front entrance out almost to the driveway, are almost complete. When it opens in 2012, the new space will be a bright, welcoming area for visitors and patients to gather.
A 12 foot by 26 foot living wall – hundreds of plants mounted on a grid of planters to make a continuous green “wall” – will extend along the east side of the atrium, creating a healing environment with light and plenty of fresh air. A small water feature will be surrounded by comfortable seating nearby. Once it is built, the entrance and waiting area to the new clinic will be on the west side of the atrium. A new patient and visitor friendly information desk will be conspicuously sited with the atrium and a wide corridor will lead to the new food services area near where the current Tim Horton’s kiosk is located.
Seven Oaks has financing to go ahead, but is also seeking funds from the community. To support Access to Care call 632-3552 or, for more information, follow the link to a video about the project at www.sogh.mb.ca.

oohoo W for Dr . Patch Adams
The Wellness insTitute is a woohoo sponsor for a new conference that will bring Dr. Patch Adams to winnipeg and Seven Oaks Hospital this spring...
W hy The W Conference will be a unique event inspired by the idea that creating happy, balanced work environments yields results... not just happier employees but business results such as greater employee retention and engagement, reduced employee management costs, increased profit and return on investment. It's a philosophy that works well with the Wellness Institute's Workplace Wellness initiative, which provides a range of wellness and injury prevention services to all types of workplaces. As a sponsor and presenter at the corporate wellness event, the Wellness Institute hopes to encourage more workplaces to develop their own wellness plans.
W hat The event will take a whole person approach, focusing on heart, mind, body and spirit. Sylvia Yaeger, Wellness Institute Occupational Therapist, will deliver the opening, "Add Some W to Your Workplace!" Sylvia will inspire attendees to create fun and thriving workplaces with wow, wonder and woohoo. As a popular Workplace Wellness speaker, Sylvia has already addressed many groups with entertaining wellness messages about handling stress.
3
Day two of the event is highlighted by an exciting keynote speaker that has shown many the power of turning wacky into wonderful in his workplace. Dr. "Patch" Adams will host a two hour keynote workshop with net proceeds donated to the Assiniboine Park Conservancy. You may know Dr. "Patch" Adams from the Robin Williams movie about his life. If not, Patch is both a medical doctor and a clown, but he is also a social activist who has devoted 30 years to changing America's health care system and speaking about wellness. He believes that laughter, joy and creativity are an integral part of the healing process. As Founder and Director of the Gesundheit Institute, a holistic medical community that has provided free medical care to thousands since 1971, he has experience putting that belief into practice.
W oohoo After his workshop, Patch will make a guest appearance to clown and bring laughter to Seven Oaks Hospital patients. His talents as a street clown and collection of gags have brought smiles to young and old alike and are sure to brighten moods and entertain those in care.
To see a video of Dr. Patch Adams at work, clowning around, visit YouTube and search for "Patch Adams - Clowning Around." For more about Patch, visit patchadams.org or www.patchadamsspeaks.com
W Confe r e nce The W Conference will be held at the Winnipeg Convention Centre, May 10 and May 11. Tickets are available for just the keynote workshop with Patch Adams. For more information, or to register, visit www.thewconference.ca.

Medical Masters in training... Calling all future doctors and nurses! The Wellness Institute's unique Medical Masters summer camp lets kids enjoy a positive hospital experience, get a sense of the many different jobs in health care and learn about their own health in an active way. With the help of Seven Oaks Hospital's generous health care staff, children ages eight to twelve get a kid friendly experience in a range of areas. Activities popular with past campers included bringing a stuffed animal to the Cast Clinic for a cast, giving dolls an x-ray in Diagnostics and wheelchair races with Rehabilitation Services. Learning is tied in with the fun. For example, kids discover the dangers of smoking while testing their lung capacity at the Respiratory Clinic. Beyond the hospital, the Medical Masters get to try some healthy cooking classes with a dietitian and develop a personal fitness plan with exercise specialists at the Wellness Institute. As with all the summer camps available, there are plenty of opportunities for active play with sports and swimming time woven into the themed activities. Other camps include Mighty Mites, Sports of all Sorts, Krafty Kids, Kid Fit, Theme Week and Planet Wellness. All camps welcome kids of all abilities and encourage a safe and peanut-free day camp environment.
Summer camps for kids aged five to twelve run from July 4 to September 2, with registration starting April 1. For details, call 632-3900 or visit www.wellnessinstitute.ca/kidscamps

Teaching Role Growing An increasing academic presence at Seven Oaks Hospital is helping to attract doctors and maintain high standards for medical treatment. Seven Oaks has been a training centre for family doctors since Kildonan Medical Centre, a teaching clinic for medical residents, was established at the hospital shortly after the hospital opened in 1981. Residents at KMC receive out patient training at the clinic, but also see patients in hospital, and do Intensive Care and Emergency Department rotations at the hospital. Both Seven Oaks Emergency and KMC also participate in training for foreign medical graduates. Later this year an Academic Surgery Unit will be developed at Seven Oaks, with 3 surgeons on the faculty locating to the site to strengthen the surgical rotation for Family Medicine residents. That’s a first for community hospitals in Winnipeg. Having an academic presence is valuable to the hospital because it tends to create an imperative to keep up with the latest standards in practice.
“The best way to ensure good care is to teach someone. It forces you to be current in best practices,” Chief Medical Officer Ricardo Lobato de Faria said. Dr. Tunji Fatoye, KMC Clinic Manager says that it’s important to expose Family Medicine residents to surgery as part of their training and to have that capability at one site is a great opportunity. “Not every Family Doctor is going to do Operating Room assists or endoscopy (when they graduate) but being involved in outpatient surgery here is very valuable because the residents are involved (with patients) at the assessment stage, not just in the O.R.,” Fatoye said. That will help the doctors once they are in practice because they will understand better which patients to refer for surgery and improve their relationship with specialists, he said.
Seven Oaks’ Emergency already has had a strong focus on training, including for medical residents and foreign medical graduates, but also training for Physician Assistant students and Nurse Practitioners. Lobato de Faria says that even when there were shortages for ER doctors he felt it was important to maintain the teaching role even if that meant coping with teaching and increased patient volumes at the same time. “In the end it paid off... we established a great relationship with doctors who wanted to come and work here,” he said. Dr. Fatoye says that traditionally specialists and academic medicine have been located at large tertiary care facilities like Health Sciences Centre and St. Boniface Hospital. Some consideration is now being given to locating some services closer to the communities they serve, but it’s still quite new, not exactly a trend. “Seven Oaks is always forward looking,” he said. “We try something and other people look at it, and say ‘that’s working.’”
