ANNIE ASKS - Ann-Marie Nieves

Annie McDonnell asks Ann-Marie Nieves, Founder of Get Red PR, Publicity and Social Media

Every month I choose to interview someone in our industry that I believe was born to shine. Beyond a shadow of a doubt, Ann-Marie Nieves, needs to be among these ranks. Her love affair with what she does began at age 3. That little girl has blossomed into someone I’m sure she would be very proud of. I am often moved by Ann-Marie’s professionalism, grace, and cache of knowledge.

There was a time where Ann-Marie wore red shoes and carried a red bag to attend anything to do with business. They’ve been turned in for a deeper, more powerful relationship with her clients that has come with almost two decades of experience and success. Ann-Marie Nieves is a powerhouse. No red shoes needed anymore.

Before we begin, I’d like to note that Ann-Marie informed me that I’ve been saying “Proust” wrong. I laughed because it figures that Ann-Marie would be the one to tell me the proper way to say “Proust”. She is always teaching me something - for over twenty-years now!

I use the Proust model when interviewing for this column. This interview model has been around since 1890’s. I first saw it used in the Vanity Fair magazine. Interesting fact about this is that authors can use this Proust model to learn more about their characters by asking their characters these questions. I decided it would be fun if I asked our guests to answer ten of the questions.

Annie: What makes you love being a publicist?

Ann-Marie: There's an adrenaline rush when you get a good placement for a client.

Annie: What is your greatest extravagance?

Ann-Marie: I’m super simple these days. Buying organic and not having a budget when we go to the grocery store.

Annie: What is the quality you like most in a person?

Ann-Marie: The ability to listen, without giving advice and giving your opinion. Genuinely listening to everything the other person has to say.

Annie: Which words or phrases do you most overuse?

Ann-Marie: This morning, it was “low and behold”. I must’ve used it five times in a conversation with one of my dog walking friends. But, generally, my most overused word starts with an “F” and ends with a “K”.

Annie: What would you consider your greatest achievement?

Ann-Marie: I have two. I have had a relationship with the same man for over 20 years. Starting my business. I’m in my 18th year with Get Red PR!

Annie: What is your most marked characteristic?

Ann-Marie: My large forehead.

Annie: What do you most value in your friends?

Ann-Marie: Definitely honesty and definitely a raunchy sense of humor. I love to laugh and I love people that go there.

Annie: Who is your favorite fictional character?

Ann-Marie: Samantha Jones from “Sex in the City”. I am loving the reboot, “And Just Like That”, but missing Samantha.

Annie: What is your motto?

Ann-Marie: It’s really not hard to be kind - just showing people a little bit of kindness goes a long way. Like to the people who are opening the door for you, or giving you your coffee, or driving your kids on the school bus. I think we can all show a little more kindness and gratitude towards everyone.

Annie: What is one thing you’d like authors to know about Get Red PR that they might not know already?

Ann-Marie: We are a small but powerful boutique agency. We provide full service traditional PR and Marketing. If you need website, advertising, PR, social media, or book tours, we have that covered.

Annie: What would you tell people that the value is of going with a boutique agency?

Ann-Marie: There are many great literary publicists out there, and a few of us refer business to each other. I think the value in boutique is that you’re getting a little bit more hands-on experience.
