Career opportunities

In addition to the training you will complete on campus, you will also get valuable hands-on experience, including regular placement at the Wellington SPCA and work experience within Veterinary Clinics. Your success will allow you to earn qualifications that are recognised and respected widely throughout the animal industry, both in New Zealand and overseas.

New Zealand Certificate in Animal Care (Companion Animals) Level 3 Start: February and July 2017 Length: 21 weeks, full-time (includes a one week break) Campus: Petone

National Certificate in Animal Technology (strand in Veterinary Nursing Assistant)* Level 5 Start: April 2017 Length: 36 weeks, full-time (includes a two week break) Campus: Petone

Taking care of animals is a challenging and rewarding career option. You will have the opportunity to put theory into practice with shared responsibility for the care of animals and work experience within the industry. We will assist you in gaining knowledge and skills for your chosen career.

Learn and practice a range of clinical, surgical and diagnostic skills, both in the classroom as well as on work placement in veterinary clinics, for a career as a veterinary nurse assistant.

Entry criteria

Entry criteria

NCEA Level 1, or equivalent gained through tertiary study. Or successful completion of Wellington Trades Academy HV4514 Certificate in Foundation Studies (Level 2) (Introductory Animal Care), or similar Wellington Trades Academy programme. Or relevant personal, practical, professional and/ or educational experience, including literacy and numeracy competence equivalent to that specified above.

60 credits at NCEA Level 2 with at least 12 credits in Level 1 Maths, and 12 credits of a relevant science at Level 1. Or equivalent tertiary study, or meet the education provider’s requirements for the equivalent numeracy and literacy standards.

If English is your second language, a minimum IELTS (Academic) score of 5 with no band score lower than 5.0 is required, or equivalent. All students are required to complete a Criminal Conviction Declaration Form. Students who have a criminal conviction/s may be asked to present a copy of their criminal record. In the event of an adverse criminal record, entry into the programme will be at the discretion of the Head of School. Career opportunities Our programme of study will prepare you to progress on to further animal related study, or to a career within the field of animal care, including catteries, kennels, the SPCA and pet shops.

Career opportunities You will be equipped to gain employment as a veterinary nurse assistant. Undertaking this programme will provide you with the qualification necessary to enter into the New Zealand Diploma in Veterinary Nursing. (Intended delivery date is 2018 subject to NZQA approval).
