Hayley

Business Administration

They said one of the great things about my interview was that I had the qualification. Also, my tutor gave me a rave review

After working in the same industry for five years, Hayley decided it was time for a challenge. She wanted to start a new career, so she studied business administration. “When I did the course I thought ‘I want to get into charity work.’ I want to be on that front-line, helping people.” During the programme, Hayley strengthened her knowledge of administration and computing, as well as learning new skills. She enjoyed getting to know her classmates and found the one-on-one tutor time incredibly helpful. For Hayley, one of the most valuable parts of the course was learning how to deal with sensitive client data.

6

“It’s one of the things that is so key in a lot of jobs these days. If you’re dealing with large amounts of patient or client data, you need to protect that information and treat it with respect.” She utilises this skill every day in her new job, working for a company that deals with diagnostic medicine. Hayley was one of three candidates interviewed for the position. She landed the job two hours later. “They said one of the great things about my interview was that I had the qualification. Also, my tutor gave me a rave review.” Hayley still plans on entering the charity sector in the future. She wants to set up an organisation that arranges charity events such as dinners, dances and murder-mystery nights. These events would help to raise awareness for different charities and all proceeds would be donated directly to their cause.

Scott

NZIM Diploma in Management

Trying to get the best out of your players is very similar to trying to get the best out of your employees

Former All Black and local rugby hero Scott Waldrom took the next step in his sports coaching career by studying the NZIM Diploma in Management at WelTec.

As well as coaching, Scott works as the Development Officer for the Avalon Rugby Club. Having been involved in rugby, as both a player and coach, helped Scott to understand the topics covered in the management programme.

Scott regularly applies the skills he learnt in business management to sports training.

“Trying to get the best out of your players is very similar to trying to get the best out of your employees.”

“A lot of the diploma crosses over to coaching – areas such as people management, management structures, roles and responsibilities right through to leadership and motivation.”

Returning to study has been a big change for Scott, but he says it’s an opportunity he couldn’t afford to miss.

In the past, Scott has represented New Zealand in Sevens and played for New Zealand Maori. He now coaches the Wellington Sevens team, is involved with the Hurricanes development programme and is a skills coach for New Zealand Sevens players based in Wellington.

10

“In rugby, sure, you get your wins, but actually having a qualification behind you gives you a firm foundation for the future.”

Toni

Graduate Diploma in Applied Management

From dealing with stakeholders, to working with budgets, to logistics and marketing. Every subject we learnt on the programme, I use in my role

Toni has recently completed the Graduate Diploma, specialising in Event Management. As a full-time worker and mother of 7 year old twins, balancing her studies was hard work, but determination and the support of her tutor saw her succeed.

The Events Management programme helped Toni land her job. She now works as the Holiday Programme Coordinator for YMCA and is about to join the Raise Up crew, to support and lead a committee of teenagers who organise youth events and workshops in Upper Hutt.

With a theatrical background and history of working with children, Toni has always been interested in Events Management. In High School she organised her first event, a lunchtime rock concert, where the school’s bands came together to perform.

In the future, Toni hopes to organise grand events in Wellington. She has her heart set on rock concerts at Westpac Stadium, Homegrown and Stage Challenge.

For Toni, the best part of the course was organising her event for KidsCan. Toni staged a variety show at Maoribank School, which raised just under $2000 for the charity.
