Future thinking. Right here
Engineering As the world gets more complex, the need for engineering solutions increases. There’s a global demand for engineering skills which makes this an exciting career option. Our engineering degrees and diplomas are a good combination of theory and practical work. Plus you’ll learn in modern workshops with the latest technology – we’ve just spent $3 million upgrading our engineering facilities. Engineering goes beyond machinery, construction and circuitry. It encompasses sustainability and community – and ultimately improves the way we live. The work of an engineer is at the heart of modern life – be it developing production models that suit the environment, providing clean water or creating technologies that bring people together.
Get qualified faster One of the great things about engineering at WelTec is you can get in, develop your skills and go straight out to the workforce. You can achieve a Bachelor of Engineering Technology degree in three years or National Diploma in two.
You could earn more
Career opportunities
Research by the Institution of Professional Engineers (IPENZ) shows that amongst engineering graduates with a year’s work experience, BEng Tech graduates earn up to 10% more than university engineering graduates.

Naomi
New Zealand Diploma in Engineering
“
There are jobs galore in the industry so it’s not a case of where you’re going to work when you come out, it’s where do you want to work, what do you want to do
For Naomi, an enquiring mind is key to being a successful engineer. “If you like problem-solving, and often think ‘why is that like that?’ then you’ve got the right mindset for engineering.” The WelTec graduate has been working at Beca as an engineering technician for two and a half years. In fact, she started the job straight after finishing her studies. “I completed my last exam at WelTec on a Friday and then started work the following Monday.” At the moment, she’s working on the MacKays to Peka Peka Expressway on the Kapiti Coast – one of the major infrastructure projects underway in the region. She’s the utilities design team lead and work package manager, helping to divert services (such as waste-water, power and telecommunications) underneath the expressway and around structures.
”
“If people are thinking about getting into engineering, there are fantastic opportunities. Things always need to be built, expanded or upgraded.” Naomi recently gained her New Zealand Diploma in Engineering Practice, giving her associate membership of the Institute of Professional Engineers New Zealand and making her a certified engineering technician. Naomi initially went to university, but found it wasn’t for her. She liked the fact that WelTec offered small classes and a practical approach to engineering. “It’s slightly more like a classroom where you feel like you can ask questions, whereas at a university with 300 people in a lecture, you don’t feel like you want to put your hand up and ask a question. It helps you understand it from start to finish because you can ask those questions along the way.” “It’s also quite practical, which solidifies the theory behind it. The lecturers will either take you out to do surveying – we did hours of surveying each week – or in geotech, we dug holes and had a look at different rock formations around the Wellington area, right through to using the hydraulics labs or crushing concrete to see its strength.”

George
Bachelor of Engineering Technology
“
It's definitely satisfying to come up with something that saves time, money and lives
”
A device designed by Bachelor of Engineering Technology student George is improving the safety of those fighting bush fires in Australia. George designed an electronic remote control unit which allows firefighters to remain in the safety of their fire engines while controlling their fire hoses. The device was designed for his finalyear project, and is now in service in Australia. George has been working at Fraser Engineering in the Hutt Valley for seven years. “The project came about from a request by a customer in South Australia.” Fraser’s is best known for building innovative fire engin es for the New Zealand Fire Service and for export.
Working with his supervisor, Frans Weehuizen, George built clear specifications for the device, produced a design and prototypes, and then built a production-ready version. George says the feedback so far has been good. “Now I've graduated with my degree, I'm still working on the device in my role at Fraser's as it needs some refinements. It's been in use over the summer when bushfires are most common. The company is producing more units to meet customer demands at the moment.” George says the project has been a challenge, but ultimately a satisfying one. “It's different to what I normally do as part of the design team at Fraser’s. Electronics is a personal passion and to be able to do it through work is fantastic."
“There was a similar remote control monitor on the market the year before. However, what we've come up with is easier and faster to install and saves a lot of time. The water cannon sits on the front bumper of the fire engine and is controlled by a joystick from within the cab.” “I wanted to learn hands-on engineering, so started on the workshop floor,” he says. “I decided that the Bachelor of Engineering Technology was better suited to me as I wanted to advance my technical and electrical engineering skills.”
