What is Trades Academy? Wellington Trades Academy partners with local secondary schools, WelTec and Whitireia to provide year-long training programmes that allow you to achieve NCEA Level 2 and get ready for employment or higher-level studies.

There are many advantages of enrolling for Trades Academy: _ Productively use your time. Learn actual career based skills while achieving NCEA Level 2 _ Stay enrolled at school and continue to participate in extra- curricular activities you enjoy like sport, music and cultural events _ Allows you to make new friends and keep in touch with your school mates _ Check out tertiary learning. How does it work?

_ Check the choices available _ Total achievable credits are shown with each option _ Courses are either taught in Petone (at WelTec) or Porirua and Kāpiti (at Whitireia) _ Classes run Thursday and Friday Morning session: 9am – 12pm Afternoon session: 12.30pm – 2.30 pm _ Attendance at both sessions is compulsory _ Allocation of credits supports students school based learning by contributing to achievement of NCEA Level 1 and 2, with a Vocational Pathway award. 5

I N T R O DU CTO RY A N I MA L CAR E Petone Level

Credits

Learn to look after animals in this introductory course and get an insight into working in the animal care industry. You’ll study animal anatomy and physiology and how to keep animals in hygienic conditions. Handle and care for a range of small animals from birds to reptiles, rabbits to fish, cats and dogs. After doing this course, you can go on to further study in this field.

Gain introductory skills to start working in the construction industry. You’ll learn how to use hand and power tools, understand project planning and health and safety, plus learn skills in painting, glazing, plumbing and roofing. The course will prepare you for entrylevel roles in carpentry or other trades (bricklaying, paving and landscaping, painting and decorating, electrical, plumbing and plastering), or you might decide to keep building on your skills and do further training.

If you’re interested in the construction and infrastructure industries, this programme will provide you with an insight. Try your hand at building and plumbing. Gain practical hands on experience while learning about the health and safety requirements of each trade. This programme is a great introduction and taster for what it’s like to work in this industry.

ENGINEERING AND AUTOMOTIVE Petone Level

Start your career working with cars and engines. In this course, you’ll learn all the theory and put it into practice on practical projects. You’ll cover different areas from auto electrical to metal work and welding, steering and suspension to vehicle servicing, engine operation to wheels and tyres.

This programme provides knowledge and practice of working safely in the motor industry and an electro technology environment. Gain practical hands-on skills in automotive and electrical engineering along with practical engineering skills. Train in our onsite workshops and prepare yourself for a career in these fields.

Want to work in the fitness industry? You’ll learn about working in a fitness environment and how to coach a client, plus you’ll develop your knowledge of anatomy, nutrition and the correct use of gym equipment. Your study will be largely based in the gym and you’ll learn hands-on. Master ropes courses, rock climbing and experience adventure based learning.

HAI R A ND BE AU T Y SA LO N S UPPO RT Petone Begin your career in hair and beauty. You’ll gain the skills and Level Credits knowledge to work in a salon support role by covering elementary hairdressing services, professional customer service and communication skills, and elementary beauty services. You’ll also learn photography to build your own portfolio and gain experience. Learn about the retail environment and what motivates customers.

HEALTH AND CO MM U NI T Y S UPPO RT Petone Want to work in health or with the community? You’ll gain an Level Credits understanding of what’s needed for a career in health by exploring adolescent health, how people can manage change and how to enhance people’s wellbeing. You’ll also get an introduction to working with youth, the elderly, people with disabilities or in an emergency response role. Get a basic grounding so you can specialise further in an area of your choice.

Begin your career in the hospitality industry. You’ll learn basic culinary skills and methods of cookery. You will also learn valuable front-of-house skills and knowledge, such as restaurant service and how to set up and service a function. The course is very hands-on and you will gain the necessary skills to progress further in this industry.

Gain insights into the hospitality and tourism industry. Learn the art of making a good coffee and cooking skills that can be used in a café environment. You’ll learn about customer service and health and safety for the industry. Gain hands-on experience in our on-site training café, practice what you learn on real customers.

How to enrol

Entry criteria You should preferably have 60 credits at NCEA Level 1 including literacy and numeracy. Application for special entry may be considered for students who hold fewer than the recommended NCEA credits.

Enrolment process There are a fixed number of places available so enrolments that meet the criteria are accepted in the order that they are received.

Interview Once we receive your application form and reference, we will invite you for an interview. You can bring family and whanÄ u or other support people with you.
