CHELAN EVENING FARMER’S MARKET

GOOD BOOK READS – Recommendations courtesy of Riverwalk Books –1 Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sáenz This Printz Honor Book is a “tender, honest exploration of identity” (Publishers Weekly) that distills lyrical truths about family and friendship. Aristotle is an angry teen with a brother in prison. Dante is a know-it-all who has an unusual way of looking at the world. When the two meet at the swimming pool, they seem to have nothing in common. But as the loners start spending time together, they discover that they share a special friendship—the kind that changes lives and lasts a lifetime. And it is through this friendship that Ari and Dante will learn the most important truths about themselves and the kind of people they want to be.

2They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera Adam Silvera reminds us that there’s no life without death and no love without loss in this devastating yet uplifting story about two people whose lives change over the course of one unforgettable day. On September 5, a little after midnight, Death-Cast calls Mateo Torrez and Rufus Emeterio to give them some bad news: They’re going to die today. Mateo and Rufus are total strangers, but, for different reasons, they’re both looking to make a new friend on their End Day. The good news: There’s an app for that. It’s called the Last Friend, and through it, Rufus and Mateo are about to meet up for one last great adventure—to live a lifetime in a single day. In the tradition of Before I Fall and If I Stay, They Both Die at the End is a tour de force from acclaimed author Adam Silvera, whose debut, More Happy Than Not, the New York Times called “profound.” Featuring a map of the novel’s characters and their connections, an exclusive essay by the author, and a behind-the-scenes look at the early outlines for this critically acclaimed bestseller.

Pateros, good wine is all about good grapes.

Grapes of each variety are chosen carefully from those grown at Antoine Creek as well as from other Central Washington Vineyards. Each lot is hand selected and then kept separate from the day it is picked until it is blended at bottling time.

Succession Wines is currently managing 39 different press dates.

So, what is the advantage of a 100 percent straight varietal wine?

“It keeps every wine unique,” Lindsay said. “They are the true expression of the varietal.”

Lindsay said that he is consistently in the field searching for vineyards that are producing grapes of a unique flavor and superior quality to make up the overall portfolio of Succession Wines.

“We firmly believe we have one of the better vineyard books in the state,” Lindsay said.

Soon they will be adding some of their own grapes to the mix. They have a few acres of Syrah on the production facility and tasting room land. They are soon scheduled to close on 20 acres not far away, which will also be planted in vineyards.

Six years after their change in course, the Lindsays couldn’t be happier with the move they made.

Brock Lindsay said they feel very fortunate to be able to spend their careers making and selling excellent wine.

In addition to getting to pursue their passion, one of the great perks is flexibility and family time. Erica gets to stay home full time with Layla, now 6, and her younger sister Reese, 4. She also serves as chief advisor, and Brock often calls her during the day for input.

The girls are frequently at the production facility and tasting room running around outdoors and helping out. For example, as crush season is underway they are participating in the foot stomping work. Brock, though he works as hard as ever, has much more flexibility in his schedule. He enjoys having breakfast and lunch with the family and seeing his girls during the day.

Describing his new way of life, Brock said, “I don’t think there’s anything better.”

Succession Wines, located at 78 Swartout Road in Manson, is open from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
