The investigation and survey found: According to the field survey regarding to Zhonghang Cheng around the base, we found that the building construction in this area has an outstanding feature that is most high buildings on the south and north of the base face to east and west but not south and north. The conclusion based on analysis is that the high-rise residential buildings facing to east and west is mainly for landscape preference instead of facing to the south and north as the common residential buildings do. Therefore, making maximum landscape use of Xinglin Bay and Yuanbo Garden should be taken into consideration in this design. This club design is required to satisfy the following functions, and to make the club to become a public area node of the entire residential area at the same time. The road on the east of the base is duallane as well, near the landscape.

the form adopts a square shape, which can better make use of the space and coordinate with surrounding residential buildings.

The density of surrounding residential areas is large. Except for few businesses, the hotel facility is deficient; therefore, the guest rooms of the club are quite important. Thus, it is considered to make guest room part independent and face to east and west ,so as to make maximum use of favorable landscape on the east side.

According to locations of entrances to two residential areas on south and north side, the entrance is set on transition space in the middle of two blocks; meanwhile, the south of entrance space can achieve good vision.

1.In this city, most high-rise buildings are integrated with commercial skirt buildings as a whole. 2.This design separates the high-rise building from the skirt building, enabling the function division to be more clear and reducing the pressure sense of low-rise buildings in the south of old town caused by the overall height of architecture. 3.Commercial stilt building forms a free square space on the ground, enhancing the connection between new city zone and old city zone, and making the size of large building becomes lighter and more vivid. 4.Connect the high-rise commercial building with low-rise one using corridor. Establish sunken plaza to make the vertical space be more abundant in accordance with functional requirements.

As the important place for urban people, office space has almost become the place people staying for the longest time in a day, whether the office space is comfortable or not is very essential. This adoption of split-level in high-rise office part story forms a continuous streamline with upward rotation in space, enhancing the interest in vertical space, and constituting a “communication and balance in vertical space.

Commercial Structure Force Analysis

commercial part adopts stilt building as the architectural style. Because of the large stilt area and big height of floor storey, the truss structure has been applied. When the pinwheel-shaped core tube under a force, the vertical transport hollows out the internal space enclosed by four core tubes, forming two encircling rectangular business space, thus making the whole building become more concise and vivid.

the core tube consists of a shear wall structure whose external connects with anchoring steel frame. And the steel frame of core-tube makes a solid joint with truss structure. And then, two thick truss layers will be supported by the core tubes of four shear wall. In the diagram, the red color refers to support force, and the blue color refers to tensile force.

The connection between the upper and lower truss relies on steel diagonal bracing of inner edge and outer edge of truss. The internal diagonal bracing in the diagram combines the upper and lower structure layers, thereby making stress stable and balanced.

The outer diagonal bracing connects two structure layers with the upper structure layer, through diagonal bracing, giving the lower structure layer tensile force, making it to be “pulled and hanged”. Likewise, the lower structure layer transforms upward support force through the diagonal bracing, “supporting” the upper part.

Steel I-Beam is adopted in the middle two layers, which is equivalent to the girder on the façade of beam and column construction. The load the two floors suffered transforms above the steel I-beam, then distributes evenly on the diagonal bracing in the inner ring and the outer ring. The diagonal bracing is supported by the support force of the lower structure layer and the tensile force of structure layer topside, finally impacting on the core tube. Hence, an integrated steel frame is constituted by the whole core tube and all steel frame systems.

Concept Generation

a “green corridor” in the air to build a threedimensional transportation system that is connected to the land parcel, forming a fluid pedestrian airspace.

Diverting water to make a lake: divert the seawater into the office blocks to form an internal lake, thus the landscape is enlarged.

Reshape the shore and develop a rich set of peninsula with the earth volume in the internal lake, forming a “flowing” coastal recreational space with the guidance of the seawater.

Connecting each land parcel by a “flowing green corridor” in the air, assembling the coastal space with flowing seashore, providing a “flowing recreational” city for the citizens.

Once the city, as a spatial environment, sublimates to an artistic state regarding to its modeling, will generate an image full of perfect artistry. This time, the city design evolves the concept of “flowing city”, besides its correspondence to the geographical nature of the waterfront city space, we want it to have more possibilities to be closer to nature for nowadays’ city life.

---The central node of coastal areas and the intersection of various functional areas form the visual buffer.

---Scatter people and cars into different areas by designing urban secondary main roads.

WEN CUI | PORTFOLIO 2016 | PAGE 38

After confirming the concept, land use planning should begin by planning new road network, according to the existing road net, at the same time, coordinating each land parcel which is divided by the road net. Based on the investigation result of the base surrounding environment, divide each land parcel into four main functions: office, business, residence, and entertainment. The requirement of the proportion of the building area is 4:3:2:1. The office area is distributed at the central landscape corridor; the residential area is zonally distributed close to the main road and facing the east waterfront residential area; The buildings of entertainment are distributed at the core of eco-island; Business zone goes through the bottom of office and residential areas to make the connections between various functions of buildings to be more close.

Design Idea: the central water landscape & urban ecological park in the future is strongly rooted in the coastal natural scenery and humanistic environment.

Design Concept: we plan to design and develop a green center for Xinglin-Bay Business Center. The center is near the coas

making people feel that they are at the foot of the water while living in the city. We’d like to divert water dire merely “near” the lake. We would use a series of urban landscape design languages filled with dynamic patterns as well as poetic urban form of waterfront zone in a modern way.

Finally, we expect this central waterscape & coastal city eco-park, which is rooted in the coastal scenery an Xinglin-Bay business Center more dynamic and energetic.

Digging the lake and filling the bank is to guide the sea water into the internal Xinglin-Bay business center to form internal lake. Reconstruct the bank by calculating internal lake in earth volume. According to the needs for modelling and functions to fill and construct the coastal peninsula, so as to form a dynamic coastline and rich coastal space.

Skyline Sketch

The shape of the skyline formed by building group is very important for coastal building group. Problems were found and the corresponding solutions have been brought up in the early stage actual examples investigation. This urban design meets functional requirements while echoes with the concept of “floating city; sets super high-rise office building as high point; forms indent skyline shape on the face of A,B,C, which has a sense of wholeness and rhythm.

Active Open Space Open space means city’s exterior public space, including natural scenery, square, road, park and rest space, etc. It is city’s public place and city design’s essential element as well. With the development of the city’s pedestrian system, people have a growing demand for city public environment. New contents have also been added to the city design’s open space. In the city design, we start on the whole and focus on designing building group’s exterior space and various levels of urban open space, which creates rich city space speed so as to provide citizens with places for leisure and entertainment.

There are outdoor concerts tonight! Green land is the public oxygen bar in the city! Take children to play on the green land in the evening!

Break time coming! Go to the lake to have a rest!

City level open space

Secondary city level open space

--- Internal lake in CBD area provides fine landscape for numerous high-rise office buildings and SOHO, while brings favorable waterfront space for citizens as public leisure places.

--- It is located in the eco-green island at the intersection of commercial and residential area, entertainment area and office zone, which becomes the public leisure space for the residents and office works living in this area.

Great! There is an open-air concert at the shopping mall.

Do outdoor exercise in the morning. The air is really good!

Like to take a walk along the beach!

There is an outdoor performance of the cultural district! Downstairs is a park! Let you make many friends here.

It’s great to go through the green corridor in the air for shopping!

The environment of seaside hotel is pretty good! It’s quite good to take a walk along the beach after working for a day!

Residential open space

Coastal open space

---The green alley in the air of this residential space achieves the three-dimensional usage of the space and forms stereoscopic traffic system, so as to provide residents with a safe walking environment and comfortable public open space.

--- The numerous coastal peninsula forms rich coastline and coastal public open space and provide citizens with coastal walking space by cascading the footpath along the coast.

1.As mentioned in the figure, figure 1, 3 are the effect pictures of the open space in a city level. The internal lake and the large green landscape attract more inhabitants and tourists, and also serve the coastal cultural architectures and the underlying commercial buildings by providing the favorable views and high-class outdoor environment.

2.Figure 2 is the secondary city open space——an eco-island, which is located in the turning node of three main functional architecture areas (including living, office, and culture) as well as the turning point of the coastline. As one of the important city open spaces, it serves each functional area conveniently. Meanwhile, being surrounded by the seawater makes it more enjoyable and symbolic.

Waterfront Space Design

advocating diversity and miscibility for the waterfront space, the pure linear experience in the coastal walkway is reduced and the interestingness is increased by creating a series of space.

Strengthen the connection from the coastal areas to the nearby functional areas, providing a destination guide for the tourists and inhabitants.

Provide different open places according to different types of regional space so as to make open space for rest, which are combined with the recreational space, walkways, restaurants, cultural amusement places, activity space and the performing playgrounds together.

Along the coastal footpath are many landscape platforms, each of which is with distinctive features. Landscape accessories, outdoor exhibition areas, interactive game arts and performing space serve each other, providing visitors and residents with places for recreation and stay.

Make use of the waterfront wooden trestles to provide a buffer for the internal lake pedestrian scale and the high-rise CBD architectural scale with the function of defining the coastal space boundary, enriching the spatial level of the landscape corridor center, and giving people different leisure experience.

The base for present project is located in the old urban area at the middle section of Hexiang Road in Siming district of Xiamen, Fujian province. Considering the status that the parcel here is dilapidated greatly, to Q1. The elevation form of the street is too single and old-fashioned, and update and activate it is imperative.

the street lacks the due vitality and vigor of urban streets. The present project is intended to forge streets with modern spirits and at the same time to achieve the goal of popularity cohesion and blocks activation.

Q2. The road with a large volume of traffic is too narrow, which results in serious traffic jam in rush hours. The present case plans to widen the road and at the same time to erect overpasses at proper point of the section in order to ease the traffic pressure effectively.

Q3. Except that some space is used for parking, the remained space within the original bus stop is vacant. Considering the overplus of bus stops in Xiamen, we decide to demolish the redundant stops and to apply another strategy to the base.

Long History Old Memories of Xiamen

Basic shape characteristics of common parks: Level-ground park spread over all kinds of space in the city.

We intend to refer to the natural shape of the flowing mountain and apply it into the shape design of the city park.

The design concept originates from the ups and downs in the mountain of the nature. It aims to give people chance of experiencing the up-and-down green park. My suggestion: Overhead of the green park.

The design conception of urban park means overhead of the park, under which blocks will cross through and finally segmentation of the park into a “6+1” urban complex.

Urban Core Region

The Old Industrial District

We are inspired by mountain to create a green city which is transformed from mountain.

Urban transformation has four principles: to reduce congestion of the city centre, increase the density of the city centre, and increasing the mode of transport in the center of city, to increase vegetation greening of the city. 《Cities of Tomorrow》

Scale 1:4000 The Xiamen Island, also called heron island, is beautiful and distinctive, and the great Gulangyu Island is also located on Xiamen Island. On the basis of historical accumulation on the city, a design on the relation between concept integration and the city is putting forward, in which issues on building the second center of the city and redesigning the old buildings and industrial plants will be discussed under the background of fast urban construction. The thinking reflected in the present case is totally different from the urban renewal in a traditional view whether on the basis of concept or from an architecture perspective. On the one hand, the giant greening cell has upgraded the city greenbelt into the air and thus liberated the bottom space of the city as well as increases the value of the land in an utmost way. On the other way, the air green porch in the city connects new and old parcels to surrounding areas architecturally. The cell-shaped green porch doesn’t define a specific limit for the interior and exterior parcel. People can cross into the air porch through the stairway or ramp hanging from the cell or through other buildings. People can also walk at the bottom of the city porch in heat seasons or raining days, while are free to walk on the surface of the air porch to experience and feel the city in a totally new perspective in warm seasons like springs or autumns or in sunny days. By synthesizing former investigation results and to integrate the whole planning, I have to combine my planning with external traffic. To hold the “old” and to develop the “new” means to protect the old industrial factory district and update the parcel with low utilization efficiency.

Conclusion: In an environment of fast urban development and compared to the high-rise buildings erect straightly from the ground, the design intends to construct low-lying areas in a modern city combined traffic, ecological vegetation with city life and brings the urban complex into adjacent communities like cell division in order to add a piece of green and health spirit to the future city life.
