TWENTY-SEVENTH ANNUAL EVENING OF ART
DEAR FRIENDS, Thank you for joining us tonight to celebrate 27 years of amazing work and dedication to the young people of our county!
artworxLA is more than just an arts program in alternative education high schools, we
are a safe space in which young people can create, challenge themselves, take creative risks and build a positive peer group. Together, we have created a network of educators, artists, creative professionals and caring adults and thus a community for the benefit of our students as well as for everyone involved. This year is certainly special as it has been a year of growth and change! artworxLA has expanded our programming into 33 alternative education classrooms across Los Angeles County to re-engage our students in their education. Serving over 1000 students during the academic year, we are continuing to connect students with every major museum and cultural institution in Los Angeles. By including our students’ voices in our city’s conversations, we are exposing the larger population to different perspectives, different points of view and embracing more inclusive practices. My hope is that at some point during the evenings’ festivities, you have a chance to speak with one of our student ambassadors and get to know them a little better. Know that your contribution to this evening’s gala directly benefits our students here tonight. Our students are talented, passionate young people who deserve to have a network of adults supporting their creative endeavors. I am so proud to lead this organization with the rest of our amazing Staff and Board into the next chapter. Together we can ensure that the arts remain an integral part of our students’ education and that a pathway to creative industries is clearly paved. Thank you for being a part of the creative solution.
WHEN ART WORKS, WE ALL BENEFIT! With gratitude,
Shelby Williams-Gonzalez Executive Director

6 | TWENTY-SEVENTH ANNUAL EVENING OF ART
VISION. artworxLA, formerly The HeArt Project, envisions a world where all alternative high school students graduate from high school, thrive into adulthood, and propel all society with their unique creativity.
MISSION. artworxLA combats the epidemic high school dropout crisis by engaging students in a long-term, sequential arts program offering a pursuable life path that inspires them to stay in school, evolve as unique individuals and flourish as creative adults. We achieve this by: • Creatively educating alternative high school teenagers with sustained arts exposure and immersion; • Connecting students to a network of peers, artists, cultural partners, higher education, creative industries, and supportive adults; • Investing human and financial resources around ongoing, persistent student and alumni support
CORE VALUES. Alternative high school students are intelligent, creative and powerful people. They possess the capacity to meet the highest expectations and are full of creative impulse. • Art is indispensable, enables us to communicate, and inspires an empathetic society. • Cultivating effective partnerships between artists, educators and community organizations amplifies our collective impact on the students we serve. • Our society is stronger and more inclusive when our students have full and equal access to its resources and can contribute their own voice. • Lasting change in our students and communities requires long-term investment. • Successful work in the community starts with a creative, participatory and respectful artworxLA workplace. • We expect our students to contribute their own voice to the city given full and equal access to its resources.
TWENTY-SEVENTH ANNUAL EVENING OF ART
FROM HIGH SCHOOL DROPOUT TO ENGAGED GRADUATE
While California’s graduation rate reached 82% in 2015, rates for Los Angeles’ continuation high school students can be as low as 10%. These students are disengaged and struggling with life circumstances that push school attendance far down their priority list. Without a diploma, they will earn $500,000 less than a graduate over a lifetime and are six times more likely to be incarcerated or enter the criminal justice system—82% of U.S. inmates are high school dropouts. The negative effects extend well beyond these students and their families, as the state loses $1 billion in lost tax revenue and incurs $1 billion in incarceration costs.
artworxLA LADDER
Each year, artworxLA brings a “ladder” of arts-based dropout prevention programs to approximately 1,000 students enrolled in 33 alternative high school classrooms across L.A. County. In partnership with working artists, cultural centers, art venues, and institutions of higher learning, our structure of progressive arts opportunities offers promising youth at risk of dropping out of high school the chance to re-engage in their education and reclaim their future.

ALUMNI HIGHLIGHTS John Corona graduated from Angelus Plaza high school in 2017. Before joining artworx-
LA, John battled homelessness while attending school. Without a place to call home, he fell into a state of depression and fell behind on credits. After his family secured a place to live, John enrolled in programs at Angeles Plaza HS. At this school, he was introduced to artworxLA’s foundation level workshops in visual arts. Excited about the prospect of creating art after-school, he enrolled in our Advanced Programs completing workshops in Filmmaking, Leadership, and Visual Arts. After graduating, John stayed connected to our programs by supporting artworxLA students in our Leadership and Development program. In summer 2018, artworxLA connected John to a summer internship with Film Independent. An alliance between the City of Los Angeles and the Evolve Entertainment Fund, this summer-long internship connected John to creative professionals in screenwriting and filmmaking. In the Fall of 2018, he elected to be artworxLA’s Alumni Representative on its Board of Directors. Passionate about writing, he looks forward to creating scripts for film and television that connects communities and supports diversity. John is attending courses at LACC.

In this program, she built on her creative skills in illustration and developed a video game app for portable devices. Inspired by her creative career experiences, Emely is looking forward to working as a professional artist after completing college.

Lorraine has exhibited her art at Los Angeles Public Library, the Los Angeles Theatre, and the Autry Museum of the American West. Inspired by her experiences, Lorraine challenged her skills as an illustrator by enrolling in artworxLA’s Visual Arts residency at ArtCenter College. Lorraine’s persistence to develop her drawing techniques has led to a fully funded scholarship to ArtCenter College’s Teen Summer 2018 Program. In January 2019, Lorraine applied and received a scholarship for ArtCenter At Night for the Spring. In this program, she explored producing comic book illustrations and graphic novels.
Katherine Espinoza joined artworxLA programs at Vista Continuation in the Winter

Through artworxLA programs, Lamar could reestablish his appreciation for education and catch up on his high school credits. Within a year, Lamar has been part of our Advanced Programs courses in Music Production and Leadership Development. His interests in leadership and public speaking resulted in Lamar giving the opening address for the official launch of the Design + Media Arts Academy. NAC Architecture is proud to award five scholarships tonight from the TKO Fund.
The TKO Fund was established in 2006 commemorating the retirement of Ted K. Osborn, a leader of our practice, a supporter of arts education, and an ArtworxLA Board Member. The practice he envisioned was perhaps best defined by its ethical stance in support of communities. Whether through the design of schools, community centers, health facilities, affordable housing and other projects in service of societal needs, Ted built a career focused on the sanctity of the missions of the firm’s partnering organizations. He believed in holding his work and the work of the office to anextraordinary standard; he believed that all of our clients, big and small, rich or not, deserved the best efforts of our team.
And Congratulations to ArtworxLA on another incredible year of engaging students with inspiring arts programming!
In the spirit of Ted’s generosity with his employees, clients, and associates, NAC Architecture established this fund to continue Ted’s legacy of giving. The TKO Fund is intended to support education and individuals with the drive and tenacity to better oneself through continued learning.
