There will be family entertainment in the relaxed and child friendly garden of the Shoulder of Mutton in Wendover, HP22 6EJ. Walk to Remember Sunday 14 July, Halton House Rennie Grove Hospice Care is launching a brand new event this Summer offering local people the chance to undertake a sponsored walk in a peaceful and inspiring environment in memory of special people they have lost. Walk to Remember will follow a 10 km circular route starting and finishing in the beautiful grounds of Halton House near Wendover and including a rest stop at the charity’s Memorial Woodland in Wendover itself.
Halton House is not usually open to the public and is being made available by the kind permission of RAF Halton. Walkers will continue on into Wendover Woods and wind their way down to our Memorial Woodland near Bacombe Lane before looping round and heading back to Halton House along the Grand Union Canal. Jigsaw Garden Party
21 July, Aylesbury Rugby Club Help celebrate 25 years of the work of Jigsaw Theatre Company, Registered Charity Number 2536865. The charity encourages local disabled folk – whatever their disability, physical or mental - to take part in the performing arts. It is based at Queen’s Park Centre in Aylesbury. This is the charity’s only annual fund raising event and provides the financing for the charity’s work. That work has been so successful and popular with its members that we have recently started a second group of performers, enabling twice as many local disabled folk to participate. For 10 years, this Garden Party has been growing and now attracts over 150 people so a bigger venue has been found at Aylesbury Rugby Club HP22 5RN

John Hampden Fun Run April 21 2013 Many thanks to all the parents, children and helpers who took part in the John Hampden Fun Run. Springtime snow put a stop to our original date of the 24 March, but we were rewarded by a beautiful sunny day on 21 April. 47 people took part in the challenging 5k and 10k run through the beautiful Wendover Woods, and over 50 children ran in the 1k event, raising almost £1500 for the school and all getting fitter at the same time. I would also like to thank the Forestry Commission for letting us run on their trails and the Harpenden Building Society for providing the refreshments. We do hope this will become an annual event.

Weston Turville Reservoir
A reader has alerted Wendover News to the recent appearance of 2 parallel fences which prevent walking access on the only path that was directly next to the water’s edge, at Weston Turville Reservoir. It is now impossible to walk near enough to the water to be able to see frogspawn and tadpoles or for children to “fish” with their little nets or even see this beautiful expanse of water from the whole northern side of the reservoir which has such a calming effect on children and adults alike. There is now only one very short concrete path from where the public can view the lake at the top end near Weston Turville, but you can’t access the water’s edge from that side. You cannot see the lake as you walk round the rest of the paths, now that the whole north side path has been blocked off. It seems that a local Angling Club has erected these fences so they can fish without members of the public disturbing them. It would therefore appear that they have not considered the effect on families and others who regularly visit the reservoir as a leisure facility and for contact with nature. Local interested parties including the Canal and Rivers Trust and BBOWT have been contacted. The investigation is at an early stage, but please contact Wendover News if you have any information to add - especially if you are concerned about blocking public access to the reservoir water’s edge.

John Colet Students Rise to The Toyota Challenge
Four John Colet students took part in the Toyota Stem Challenge, a national competition which invites students, aged 11-16, to design and build an environmentally friendly model vehicle. The John Colet team beat off strong competition from 280 other schools, and were delighted to make it to the South East Regional Final, which took place at Duxford Air Museum.

Wendover Guides gives local girls the opportunity to have fun, challenge themselves and develop and gain confidence in a safe environment. The girls, aged between ten and fourteen, are very enthusiastic and enjoy coming to the weekly meetings to try outdoor activities, crafts and badge work and to work in teams. The current leader of the Monday evening Guides is moving away from the area. There are two other adult volunteers who help plan events and run the meetings but a third adult is required. Previous experience is not needed as all necessary training will be given. I am writing to express my shock to hear that somebody hurled a brick through the window of the car used by the Children's Centre. The Children's Centre provides a valuable resource to families like ours in the village and the car is used by staff not only to move equipment and staff members around but also allows them to provide a taxi

service for children who otherwise wouldn't be able to attend certain sessions. This mindless act of vandalism would have put the car out of action for as long as it took to fix the window and a staff member away from regular duties as they took it to be mended. The car is not only used at the Wendover centre but other centres in the local area too, so there would have been a knock on effect.
I'm really saddened that a low cost, high value resource available to young families has suffered at the hands of some bored and stupid individual(s) who have nothing better to do than cause damage for kicks. The Children's Centre is run by Barnardo’s as a charity, often relying on donations and volunteers so I am sure that they can little afford extra outgoings like this. No doubt there are many other families in Wendover who appreciate the brilliant service provided by the team there and who would echo my thoughts. Let’s hope this never happens again. Raffle: Response to Vandalism
You maybe aware that during half term some ne’er-do-wells put the Children’s Centre’s car out of action with a brick through the window. The impact locally was quite severe and obviously impacted on the

care and assistance that was provided to the vulnerable, disabled and families in need of support. They provide great things from Daddy Cool bi weekly group (children under 5) to baby massaging and first aid courses. Therefore with the assistance of Wendover retailers, I have decided to organise a raffle. Prizes have been very generously donated by Peach Lane Studios, The Chequers Weston Turville, Rumseys, A Little Bird Told Me Gallery, Number One, No2 Pound Street, The Shoulder of Mutton to name but a few. More prizes are arriving daily. The draw will take place on the afternoon of Thursday 25 July at the weekly market where I will be selling tickets on a charity stall. I am trying to raise enough to donate and install a CCTV for the Centre. Raffle tickets will be available through the Clock Tower, Peach Lane photography and myself ADH Window Cleaning. She taught music for nine years in a comprehensive school in Neasden, London as head of the music department, which brought the opportunity to mount the first ever schools performance of the abridged version of Handel’s “Passion of Christ”. She also had the pleasure of taking pupils to Covent Garden Opera House where she managed to clock up twenty one performances of “Swan Lake”. The most nerve racking part of these trips involved travelling on the tube changing at Piccadilly Circus and doing frantic head counts to make sure they were all there. At the same time she was singing semi-professionally on TV and radio. On marriage (45 years ago), she and Alan moved to the United States where they lived for five years and Sandra worked in St Christopher’s Children’s Hospital, Philadelphia, as a play therapist. Their two children were born in the States, a daughter in Philadelphia and a son in Boston. On their return they lived in Sanderstead,
Surrey where their children were brought up, and Sandra changed to primary teaching but still as a music specialist. Ridgeway Junior School soon boasted two choirs, the senior choir giving shortened performances of “Trial by Jury”, “The Mikado” and “The Pirates of Penzance.” It was during this period that, after reading an account of a narrowboat holiday by a boy in her class, they decided to try it and were soon hooked; she and Alan still spend a few weeks each year cruising on canals and rivers in a shared narrowboat.
She took up handbell ringing which was introduced to schools and soon had the largest junior handbell team in the country, even performing in the Royal Albert Hall at the millennium. The Thame Concert Band, in which she played, lost their conductor and, for two years, she had the pleasure of conducting them, creating the Kids -Aid concerts which raised thousands for charity. Both Alan and Sandra were founders of the Weston Turville Historical Society, and support the Wendover Arm Trust, hoping to see the project completed so they can do their shopping by boat!
With ageing parents this side of the river and children in university they decided to move, and chose Weston Turville for their new home where they have lived for over twenty years. They soon became immersed in local life, Alan j oining Rotar y in G reat Missenden, and Sandra picking up the threads of her career in school music, teaching briefly in Halton and Beaconsfield, followed by High Wycombe Music Centre. The commute to work early in the morning was sheer ple as ur e, dri vi ng t hrough t he countryside which changed with the seasons, a far cry from inner London where her career began.
Sandra has been active in Wendover ever since the Rotary Club of Wendover & District was formed and this year has the privilege of leading them as their president and is often to be seen on the Manor Waste selling cakes on a stall to raise money for local charities.

She is looking forward to supporting PACE and School-Aid as the major charities, and hopes to complete the international project of providing a school library for Tembisa Secondary School in a township in South Africa, with help from other local clubs and schools.

Hello: your new Parish Clerk
Having started in my new role just over a week ago (as I type this) I’m getting to know the area better and meeting with local contacts. I have come to Wendover from Hughenden Parish Council so ‘Clerking’ is not new to me, but even so, it is surprising how much the role differs from Parish to Parish. Moving to Wendover I have ‘lost a burial ground but gained a market’ and there is certainly plenty to learn! I am proud to be working in such a beautiful Parish with so many excellent shops and facilities literally on the doorstep and a clear sense of ‘community’. As well as a new job I am still getting used to a new name, having married my husband Paul on 19 May. I have a number of hobbies that keep me busy outside of work including making silver jewellery, birdwatching (though I don’t class myself as a ‘twitcher’) and coarse fishing. I’m keen to see what fish we have at the Hampden Pond so I hope all you regular anglers will welcome a lady to the pond! I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the Parish Councillors who have made me feel so welcome as well as the fantastic team of staff at the

It was a sobering sight to see the flowers left at the War Memorial on the Manor Waste honouring the soldier who was so brutally murdered in Woolwich recently. On Wednesday 29th May women and children associated with RAF Halton held a two minute silence in his memory and laid flowers in his honour. The Parish Council would like to state its deep respect for Drummer Rigby and its sadness at his cruel and unnecessary death. This death will not be forgotten.
Manor Waste/Illegal Parking
Further to the WPC article on the front of last month’s Wendover News, it is necessary to emphasise the danger caused by vehicles parking thoughtlessly in an area where people expect to walk freely and safely. Bollards around the perimeter of the Manor Waste are removed for the weekly market on Thursdays, the Local Produce Market, Charity Markets etc., it is unfortunate that it has become a habit with some motorists to take advantage of this on a regular basis. Apart from the danger to pedestrians, disabled scooters, children with scooters etc., damage is being caused to the paved surface. The Manor Waste is already in a poor
condition and plans are in progress to rectify this when the area is refurbished, but the constant illegal parking does not help the situation.
WHS2 Grant
A request for a £5000 grant towards the costs of the appeal following the Judicial Review was received in May from Wendover HS2. Although the HS2 Action Alliance has now raised the money they need, the request has been granted to show the Parish Council’s continued support and help in the general fight to save our Village and the surrounding countryside.
Volunteers
Volunteers are needed to work with Thames Valley Police in helping to identify speeding motorists in the Village. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer and being trained to use the detection equipment, please contact the Clerk’s office.
Litter on Station Approach
We are pleased to be able to report that, before any action could be taken by WPC, Chiltern Railways have acted of their own accord to resolve the problem. We would like to thank them for their action and hope they will be able to keep the problem at bay.
