Wendover Youth Centre Party in the Garden - Massive success Many thanks to the huge crowd who turned out for the 2013 Party in the Garden at The Shoulder of Mutton on Saturday July 13th. It was a cracking event on a beautifully warm summer evening. As well as being great fun the event raised just over £2,000 for the Wendover Youth Centre. The WYC exists for the young people of Wendover. The Centre has already been saved by the generosity of many and the trustees are now raising money to ensure the longterm financial security of the Centre with the aim of employing a Youth Worker to be based at the Centre . The Party in the garden was a fantastic community event with a brilliant atmosphere made really
special by the many people who gave so generously of their time, money and skills. Special thanks must be offered to Gary King from King's Farm Shop who donated the hog roast, The Cover Collective led by Barry Evans, who played brilliant music, Emily, Caitlin and Georgina who provided entertainment and face painting for the children, and Peter who gave a picture for auction. We must also thank the many individuals and Wendover businesses who donated raffle prizes and the team of WYC volunteers led by Martin Thornton who sold raffle tickets as well as beer and the hog roast on the night. Finally, we must thank Adam and the team at the Shoulder who worked incredibly hard in extremely hot weather to make the Party a massive success. Family History: Name Changes
Sat 17 Aug 14.30 Prebendal Farm Comm Centre, Aylesbury, HP19 7QW Family historians often come to a dead end because they are so determined to match exactly the information gathered from a variety of documents. But sometimes the truth is completely different, and it is often all down to the actual names recorded. This talk by Lynda Hotchkiss, formerly staff genealogist at Lincolnshire Archives & currently chief researcher for the Cave Family History Society as well as being an independent probate & genealogy researcher, may offer some clues as to why ancestors told little white lies, or their information is incorrect. Those listening may find new ways to get round and over that brick wall in their research when the information carefully acquired from census and certificates fails to shed light on the next generation.

Kayaking round the Isle of Wight Fri 29 Aug—Sun 1 Sept Towards the end of August this year (tides permitting), Matt Ryan and his crew Ben Hutchings, Claire Morton and Ruth Morley are making an epic trip around the Isle of Wight in kayaks to raise money for The Hospice of St Francis in Berkhamsted, in memory of Paul Shyvers. Many of you will have known Paul or recognised him driving around Wendover in his red
camper van! Paul loved life, adventure and spending as much time has he could with his family and friends and that’s what they’re hoping for too. The crew have spent the last few months training in all weathers to ensure that the trip is a complete success. This will be a huge personal achievement as well as an inspiring idea to raise money for such a significant cause. Bomber Command Medal

RAF Halton’s Station Commander, Group Captain Simon Harper, has presented a member of Bomber Command with the Bomber Command Clasp. The presentation was held in the splendour of Halton House and the recipient was Warrant Officer (Retd) Cecil David Williams (known as David). The event came about when David’s son wrote to the Station Commander to ask if his father could be given his medal at RAF Halton because of his links with the Station.

While the pool has been closed, John Colet staff have continued to maintain the pool. Given the age of the pool, there are major infrastructure repairs and improvements needed. The School cannot pay for these and they will need to be funded by the community through WSA over the next few years if the pool is to remain open. Before the pool could reopen for community use, the School needed to ensure the safety of swimmers, in order to do this is was essential that WSA had all relevant paperwork, insurance and training in place. There are stringent
regulations regarding pool staffing, water safety and quality and cleanliness of changing facilities. It has been agreed that WSA will take responsibility for staffing, pool testing and cleaning during their sessions, to ensure that the water is safe and comfortable to swim in. Partnership with the community continues to be important to John Colet School, and as such it is keen for local residents to benefit from the various facilities the school has available, in so far as this is practical and economic to do so. The School will continue to work with WSA to facilitate the use of the pool for their members and the local community in this context.

WSA will pay for two of the pool boilers to be repaired in the next few weeks. While the weather is good, the water is nice and warm because of the heat from the sun. If the weather turns colder the water may be cooler but once the boilers are repaired the water can be maintained at an appropriate temperature again. WSA conducted extensive polls and surveys over the last few months and a lot of people have been telling us what they would like to see at the Pool. We have already made some changes to the swimming session times and you can see the current times at our website (www.wendoverswimingassociation.co.uk). We will be holding swimming sessions over the summer holidays and hope to hold some special days during the summer when we will be open for longer sessions. We will try to put on more sessions later in the summer, so please keep an eye on our website for announcements. John Colet Technology Tournament Triumph John Colet students were celebrating victory at a Rotary run technology tournament. The annual tournament challenges teams, from local schools, in a design and model based problem. The John Colet teams were jubilant as they came out top in all the categories they entered, including the teachers team. Competitors were asked to design a model vehicle that could be driven forward up a ramp, powered purely by the dropping of a weight which was attached to the vehicle. This year proved to be the John Colet’s most successful to date. The John Colet Year 10 team beat five other teams at their level, and the Year 7 team A beat 11 other teams at theirs. Not wanting to be out done by the students, a teacher team, which included John Colet Technology Teacher Mr Brand, was also victorious. He said: “We had a clean sweep, having won all the prizes available. The mood in the bus on the way home was very jubilant.”

Wendover Rotary’s BUST project has reached its target of collecting 10,000 bras by 1 July 2013 – in fact the Club collected 10,004. We are very grateful for such support, and plan to continue this worthwhile venture for another year. Our new target is 15,000 by 1 July 2014 - a mere 5,000 more to collect! Can you help us again? With the help of local retailers and businesses it is now easier than ever to drop off unwanted bras. Wendover Scout Group This term, we have seen the Scouts visit the Forest of Dean, camping next to the River Wye. The Explorers have been to Derbyshire walking. The whole group went to Warwick Castle for St George’s Day. In addition to all the weekly activities, the Beavers have taken part in a Beaveree, with nearly 600 6-8 year olds coming together for a day. They have been on a canal trip & hiked the paths of the Chilterns. The Cubs have been spies for the evening at Milton Keynes. The Scouts held a cook and camp weekend cooking on open fires (on a very hot weekend). Not to be outdone, the Explorers held an Adventure race weekend taking on various challenges around the area on the

Wendover Tennis and Squash Club Our tennis Finals Day in July was blessed with a hot and sunny day which helped to make it an enjoyable day for both the finalists and the onlookers. Wendover Cricket Club Wendover Cricket Club held a very successful colts day on 13th July and the season’s awards for 2013 were presented by Club Chairman Jeremy Nicholson to the players shown in the table above. Most of the junior teams have performed well in their leagues and a full report will be issued after the final matches have been played. Of the senior teams, the 1st XI has had a generally successful month and has maintained their leading position at the top of the Mid Bucks League Division 1. The 2nd XI has struggled for playing strength, although their performances have been improving.

Yes, perhaps there are bigger things to worry about in the world and perhaps I should get a life, but it is such a small and simple thing I am asking that would make such a huge difference to everyone. A team from local Opticians Ivan Cammack walked 26 miles of The Ridgeway on 22 June to raise money for the deafblind Charity Sense. £2457 has been raised so far by the team of four, which included staff from across the three branches of Ivan Cammack in Thame, Wendover and Chinnor. They started the walk at midnight and trekked for ten hours from Oxfordshire to Wiltshire, fighting the rain and wind in what was supposed to be midsummer weather. These four young leaders are the new Head Boy and Girl and their deputies, of John Colet School. They took up their positions after a fierce selection procedure which involved both students and staff voting. They have already started work as they welcomed students to the Year 12 Taster Day. They have also organised a mufti day to start their fund raising year even though the beneficiary charities (one local, one national) will not be nominated and chosen, by the School Council, until next term. They intend to beat the £800 raised this year. They also organised a Sixth Form Sports Day right at the end of term. There have been intense discussions about the Sixth Form dress code, and it has now been amended so that boys and girls alike will wear jackets. Once school starts again in September, from day one they will be extremely busy making sure that the new Year 7 students can recognise them and feel comfortable approaching them in case they need help. Similarly, they will be making a special effort to integrate the Year 12 students who are new to the school and make them feel at home as soon as possible. They are offering “friendly sport” to the Sixth Form as it is not a compulsory part of the curriculum and they will be organising Sixth Form assemblies where a tutor group will lead a particular morning assembly.

Their programme for next year will make much of seasonal events, starting with a fun approach to Halloween; this will very soon move to the more sombre mood of Remembrance and laying a wreath during the ceremony at the Wendover War Memorial on the Manor Waste. November is also the time for Help Week, another charity fund raising opportunity including a talent show, cake sales and fancy dress. After Christmas they will start planning the Leavers’ Prom and in March compère the Liaison Group (Junior Schools) Concert at the Waterside Theatre in Aylesbury as well as organise Easter activities. All the while they will also be preparing for their World Challenge expedition to Ethiopia next summer. Good luck! Local Face: Alan Payne Alan Payne was born in Wendover. He studied at Wycombe Technical College and worked in Aylesbury for a brief period before volunteering for military service, as war had broken out again. He decided to capitalise on his lifelong love of aviation by joining the RAF in 1942. He trained as an observer in the UK and South Africa, and flew 29 missions as a bomb aimer on Lancasters with 630 Squadron. Whilst serving with this squadron, he participated in the Battle of Berlin from November 1943 to March 1944, which culminated with the raid on Nuremberg on March 30 and 31 1944. This was the most disastrous night of the war for Bomber command, resulting in the loss of 96 Aircraft, and is the subject of the recent book The Red Line, in which Alan features several times. He was awarded the DFC for his service with Bomber Command. After his tour with Bomber Command was completed, Alan transferred to Transport Command and flew as a navigator, serving on the Halifax with 620 Squadron in Palestine supporting 6th Airborne Division. When his time with the RAF ended, he attended Oxford School of Architecture to

study, and obtained a five year diploma and RIBA qualification. His architecture study finished in the late 1940s, and he returned to Hertfordshire to work. In 1970, Alan started an architecture partnership in Tring which h ad clients in Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire, and some overseas clients, too. He is proud of the five years his firm spent working with the National Children’s Home in Harpenden. In the Wendover area, he designed Weston Turville, Wilstone and Stoke Mandeville Village Halls, as well as the Wendover Cricket Club Pavilion in the Witchell. From 1983 to 1999 he served as the diocesan architect for the Diocese of Oxford. As part of that role, he was responsible for quinquennial inspections of St Mary’s Wendover, Kimble Church and St Michael and All Angels in Aston Clinton, among others. He is happy to have worked on many of the updates and upgrades to St Mary’s, including overseeing the conversion of the organ chamber to a social centre, the fitting of the glass doors in 1998, and the addition of the bell tower floor in 1999.

Alan has lived in Wendover all his life, except whilst in the RAF and at Oxford. He lives in a house of his own design, next to the house where his children were raised. Alan and his wife Gwendoline, whom he met whilst stationed at an RAF base in North Wales, built Alan’s current house when their children had grown and began to start their own families. One of his sons still lives in the original house with his own family. His eldest son and his family run a farm and stables at Whiteleaf. Alan travelled to South Africa in 2011 as part of the “Heroes Return” programme with the Big Lottery Fund. He chose to return following the death of his wife in 2009, and visited the areas where he had been whilst on RAF training in 1942-43. Alan assisted in the formation of Wendover Cricket Club in the 1950’s and attends matches when possible. He was an active golfer at Ellesborough Golf Club until recently. For several years he was a committee member of the Friends of St Mary’s, and he still attends services there regularly. He was also a member of Tring Rotary Club and the Probus Club of Aylesbury Vale until they ceased meeting.

View from the Chair Firstly a quick word to wish two of our Parish Councillors the very best for a speedy recovery. Oliver Statham and Bob Lewis will be resting a while over the summer whilst they have health issues sorted out. Our best wishes go to them (and their wives). We wish them a speedy recovery. Thanks to Oliver for putting together an excellent response to the HS2 Environmental Impact statement, see the website. I have been working jointly with other Parish Councils and the National Trust to ensure our responses have consistency.
No Parish Council Meeting in August The Clerk and I have had discussions with the local Constabulary regarding New Years Eve 2013. There were comments regarding safety last year which are being addressed so that risks are avoided where possible and others at least minimised. We had a great response to our request for Speedwatch volunteers and now have a panel of ten! (see p11) Wendover Rotary have BUST bins at Costa Coffee and the Clock Tower for ladies to donate unwanted bras and benefit the charity Breast Cancer Care UK. This is in addition to the collection points in Florence Nightingale Hospice Shop and The Flower Gallery. Their target of 10,000 has been reached which is fantastic. (see p17), only 5,000 to go.

Many months ago I promised the Snow Patrol a pint in the Swan to thank them for their efforts last winter. It would seem appropriate that we meet up soon whilst the weather is so hot! Well done to Wendover Swimming Association for re-opening the pool which is great news. A lot of work still needs to be done and the Parish Council are providing assistance where they can. A lot of people supported WSA in the past to get the pool built. Please support this venture now to ensure its future. (see p14) Robert Duggan, Chairman

Now summer is here you may have a bee problem. Honeybees are the ones which swarm and can be collected, Bumble bees and solitary bees should be left alone. To identify them go to the British Beekeepers Assoc. website - www.bbka.org.uk . Sean Kirwan (07850 085767) from Mid-Bucks Beekeepers is a local bee swarm collector.
After the success of last year we once again have hanging baskets on lampposts in the High Street. This is a combined effort between the Parish Council and Wendover Chamber of Trade and Commerce who have contributed towards the lamppost testing. We hope you are enjoying them and the added character they give (there are photos on the Wendover News website).

Allotments
The Council is aware that a small minority of residents are putting home rubbish into public waste bins. Full bins mean there is nowhere for the public to dispose of litter leading to a risk of over-flowing and making it is more likely to end up in street. Please be considerate of others and do not put domestic rubbish in public bins.
We currently have allotments available at the Parish Piece. Perhaps you would like to give one as a ‘green’ gift? If so, please get in touch to discuss it, we can produce a gift voucher for you. A starter plot is from as little as £20 for a whole year. Alternatively perhaps you would like a plot for yourself!

The deadline for the registration of teams for the Quiz is 5th September 2013. The quiz starts on Thursday 10th October 2013 – at the Bowls Club as usual.
