Volunteering
The Friends of Wendover Health Centre This involves the communities of: Butlers Cross, Halton, The Lee, Stoke Mandeville, Weston Turville and Wendover.
Wanted Volunteer Drivers Please could you spare a little time? Can you offer to be available for one morning /afternoon per week or alternatively at short notice to help someone who has no transport. On this named day, you might be asked to drive a patient to a Health Care appointment. When you volunteer, you have the option to state your preference for short or longer journeys. A driver must be a patient who is registered with Wendover Health Centre. A driver is able to claim for petrol via a simple mileage expense form to the Friends but not charge for their time. The cost of parking, if there is one, is met by the patient. An appropriate donation to the Friends to cover the cost of the trip should be made by the patient as this is not a free service provided by the Health Service.
Please help the Friends to enable the less mobile members of our community to receive the health care they need. To volunteer to be a driver please telephone 01296 622565 weekdays 9.00-11.30 or 2.00- 4.30. or email annjimson@aol.com . Belinda Horn

Card Skimmer Found on Budgens ATM The Wendover Neighbourhood Policing Team is asking residents to be extra vigilant after a card skimming device was found on the cash point outside Budgens in the High Street, Wendover.
It is unknown how long it has been there for and Officers are working with the staff at Budgens to look through CCTV to try and identify the offender/offenders. The device was in two parts. One was above the screen pointing down towards the keypad. This was a piece of plastic the same colour as the machine and it had a very small hole in it and a small camera behind. The second part was a piece of plastic which was again, the same colour as the machine with a card slot on it which had a small device in it which took the details from any cards. This was stuck over the part where you put your card in. If you notice anything suspicious about any of the cash machines then please do not use it, inform the shop and call Thames Valley Police on 101.

HS2 The Petitioning Period has arrived 29 April to 23 May The HS2 Hybrid Bill’s important Second Reading, which despite all the evidence against is expected to be passed by a large majority as all three main parties are whipping their MPs, is scheduled for on Monday 28 April. It will be very interesting to see how our MP, David Lidington, votes, and whether he considers that his position as a Minister in the Government is the most important factor in how he votes.
Free Estimates, No Job Too Small
The Wendover HS2 Action Group has already held five public meetings about Petitioning, and 07769 600050 / 01494 571096 hundreds of residents, organisations and businesses in Wendover, Dunsmore and Halton Pete have indicated that they will be Petitioning against petechapple@hotmail.com the Hybrid Bill. Petitioning is the method by which anyone “directly and specially affected” by HS2 can send in a written Petition to the House of Commons, and it will be considered by the Select Committee considering the Bill. If you haven’t yet considered Petitioning please do so now, and please ask your neighbours to do so. This is your last chance to get a better deal for Wendover, Halton and Dunsmore. That better deal is a bored tunnel right through the Chilterns AONB.

Ancient woodlands are irreplaceable The Environmental Audit Committee (EAC) report on High Speed 2 (HS2) calls for the Government to do much more for wildlife and habitats such as ancient woodlands, which will be severely damaged by the project. Responding to the report Matt Jackson, head of conservation strategy at the Berks, Bucks & Oxon Wildlife Trust (BBOWT) commented: “It highlights many of the issues we’re concerned about in the way HS2 is being pushed ahead. In our submission to the Environmental Statement, BBOWT pointed out all the gaps in the assessment of ecological impacts. Now the EAC states HS2 Ltd must carry out outstanding environmental surveys on the 40% of the route yet to be examined. In spite of this lack of information, MPs are being asked to make a decision on whether or not to go ahead with the project when the Hybrid Bill has a second reading on 28 April.”
www.wendovernews.co.uk
HS2
The EAC is also critical of the confusion and states: “The HS2 Environmental Statement must be revised to distinguish clearly between ‘mitigation’ and ‘compensation’ measures in respect of biodiversity, and to explain the factors determining in which cases these should be applied. If biodiversity loss is genuinely unavoidable and also cannot be mitigated, compensation should be applied to the fullest extent possible.” If the Hybrid Bill proceeds, a select committee will be formed to hear petitions from members of the public or organisations concerned about specific aspects of the proposals. BBOWT will be petitioning the select committee in respect of the two nature reserves, Calvert Jubilee and Finmere Woods, which will be directly impacted by HS2, and the wider issues of wildlife and habitats affected along the route.
Protecting the Chilterns is number one Minimising the impact of HS2 on the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) was the greatest single issue of concern to people who responded to the HS2 Environmental Statement, says a report by the assessors Golder Associates. The report, which was being sent to MPs before the Second Reading of the HS2 Hybrid Bill on 28

April, says that tunnelling was the highest rated issue raised by the 21,833 respondents, and in particular a demand for a full tunnel under the entire Chilterns AONB. Chiltern Society urged all MPs to "stop and think" before agreeing to the Second Reading of the Bill, which, if passed, will determine the London to Birmingham route of HS2 across the Chilterns AONB. The Society has written to all 650 MPs saying the Bill sets a dangerous precedent for all protected landscapes in Britain.

Paralympic Torch Visits John Colet Year 7 and 8 students at the John Colet School enjoyed a special assembly last month, when they were visited by Chris Rattenbury. Chris brought the Sochi 2014 Paralympic Torch with him, and spoke about Stoke Mandeville’s role as the birthplace of the Paralympic Movement. Chris, a wheelchair user, has represented the UK in his chosen sport of Powerlifting. He spoke about his inspiring journey into Powerlifting, and the importance of rehabilitation through sport. The talk was arranged through local charity Wheelpower, and Chris explained the support the Charity provides to disabled athletes, starting out in their career, by supplying vital expensive equipment. Sandy Whitehouse, teacher of PE, arranged the visit. She said, “It was a fantastic and unique experience for everyone involved, and one thoroughly enjoyed by all. Chris spoke brilliantly, completely engaging all the students.”

That Headache Can Ruin Your Life Doctors estimate that between 1.7 and 4% of the world’s adult population spend half their lives suffering from a headache. Most of us don’t undergo such extreme discomfort, but we all get them sometimes, while migraines, tension and cluster headaches in particular can make life difficult to bear. The standard treatment is to take an analgesic and soldier on, but this doesn’t address the root cause. “Many people who suffer from persistent headaches can be helped by a whole range of undervalued treatments, ranging from lavender essential oils to stopping chewing gum,” says Julia Simms, a local practitioner of the McTimoney method of chiropractic body alignment. “Many of my patients find that trigger point therapy reduces headache pain and recent research suggests an astonishing 71% benefit. The study also indicates that patients experienced a 59% reduction in neck pain symptoms, as well as improved range of motion and muscle function.” Chiropractors use trigger point therapy to relieve hyperirritable spots of pain located in taut bands of skeletal muscles. And today’s sedentary lifestyles in front of computer screens make those conditions increasingly common. Of course, it’s important to speak to your doctor about these treatments if you’re suffering from

But headaches are not 20+ years experience the only conditions Liz Brown chiropractic can help.
“Most people have the idea that chiropractic is exclusively about the spine,” says Julia, “but this is a misapprehension. While correct alignment of the spine is a key aspect of the treatment, it goes much further than that, promoting not just absence of pain but a positive sense of physical, emotional and mental wellbeing. The more balanced the body is, the better it will cope with the stresses of daily living, as well as handling any unexpected traumas that inevitably come our way. Also, as well as relieving pain conditions, a growing body of research suggests spinal manipulative therapy can improve immunity by increasing the production of tiny cells called leukocytes which support the white blood cells in fighting off a threat.”

Cycling on Footpaths I refer to the two letters in the April newsletter. Cycling on footpaths is not legal if the paths are not signed as shared. Pedestrians and cyclists need to be considerate to each other. On shared paths pedestrians need to be aware that cyclists may overtake them and allow for this while cyclists need to exercise due care when overtaking. It is important that cycling should be encouraged in Wendover so as to reduce car use as far as possible – this would be of benefit to us all and is the sole aim of Get Wendover Cycling. could be encouraged in Wendover – at the same time as making Wendover a safer place for everyone. For example, it would be helpful if the High Street had a 20MPH limit combined with traffic calming. (A survey conducted by GWC indicated strong support for this). Some time ago, the John Hampden School, supported by the Junior School, prepared plans for a boardwalk across the canal, hence providing access to the school campus via Victory Road. This would have enabled cyclists, scooters and parents with buggies to avoid Wharf Road. In the April issue of the newsletter, there is a request from the schools to parents and carers to park away from the school entrance and not to drive onto the campus. There are plans to implement this regime. The schools, like GWC, want to encourage walking and cycling. We would be pleased to welcome as members anyone who wishes to support us in striving to achieve these objectives. Since last year’s AGM, the Trust awarded a total of £20,052.38 in grants to individuals and organisations in Wendover. At their meeting the Trustees considered a further 39 applications and a total of £57,600 was paid in grants as a result. These were distributed as follows:Education: £7,475.50 Elderly: £3,650 Individuals: £6,625 Medical Areas: £ 9,500 including £5,000 for the new charity, Lindengate
Organisations: £30,350 which included £13,000 to Wendover Swimming Pool to enable three boilers to be refurbished and a secondary heat exchanger purchased. In addition, the 2nd grant of £6,000 for Wendover Youth Centre, promised a year ago, was paid, making the total grants awarded £63,600. The Trustees agreed to petition against the HS2 Hybrid Bill on the grounds that HS2 will result in a drop in the value of the Trust’s properties. Although the majority of grants are awarded at the Annual Meeting, applications are considered and grants are awarded throughout the year. Anyone who lives in the parish of Wendover or the Moor Park Estate who wishes to know more about the Trust, or to apply for a grant, should consult the website, www.wendovertrust.org, and contact The Clerk at 14A Vicarage Close, Wendover, HP22 6DS, or email clerk@wendovertrust.org, giving a contact telephone number and address. Next year’s meeting will be on 29 April and the closing date for applications to be considered then will be THE END OF FEBRUARY 2015. Glenys Newman, Clerk

Introducing the Directors of www.wendovercelebrates.org.uk
Emma Carroll
Robert Duggan
Emma helped to set up Wendover Celebrates! back in 2011 as a representative of Wendover Parish Council. She has been a Director of the company from the start, believing that “Wendover has a thriving community culture. Wendover Celebrates! is a showcase of what Wendover can achieve when everyone works together.” There is still time, just, to book in your team of Lords, Knights or Ladies for it’s a knockout www.wendovercelebrates.org.uk/ tickets.html. Emma juggles voluntary commitments with the Parish Council, Wendover Junior School and Wendover Celebrates! with the demands of two small children (and a husband).
Robert Duggan has lived in Wendover for over thirty years and remembers with fondness the carnivals of yesteryear. Raising funds for charitable causes is something Robert feels strongly about. He is a Governor of the South central Ambulance NHS Foundation Trust and current chairman of Wendover Parish Council so his support for Wendover Celebrates! and Emma and the team is without question. In 2012 one of his main responsibilities was the magnificent Parade, and he would like to better that this time. If you’d like to take part in the 2014 parade, please contact parade@wendovercelebrates.org.uk for full details.
David Honeyball
Ami Lewsley
David Honeyball was recruited as a director of Wendover Celebrates! in late 2013, having cut his teeth with fork and tongs manning the barbecue at the first Wendover Celebrates event. This year he is responsible for two of his loves – food and drink! As Club Welfare Officer for Wendover Cricket Club he thanks the committee and members of the club for supporting Wendover Celebrates again. Wendover Celebrates is only possible thanks to all the volunteers who get involved on the day. If you are able to help us at this year’s event please email volunteers@wendovercelebrates.org.uk and we’ll be in touch.
I feel very honoured to be involved in such a big event. Last time I was a Committee Member, which seemed full on, but now as a Director it is very stressful and many hours of hard work go into it, but I know when the day comes it will all be worth it. I grew up in Wendover and I’m bringing up my children here, too. I feel it’s definitely a place to celebrate. It’s amazing what we can create with the support of the community and local businesses and I can't explain how grateful we are to those who support us. It’s great that there are more tickets for the evening event this year: www.wendovercelebrates.org.uk/tickets.html .

Matters Arising May 2014
View From The Chair
Dolly Saville Freeman of Wendover
As we near the end of the Parish Year I would like to thank all staff and Councillors for their support and help, not forgetting the two Councillors who resigned. We have achieved many positive things over the last year and one of the best was the appointment of our clerk, Charlotte. I would like to publicly thank her for all her hard work and endeavour.
Dolly is the first person ever to be given the status of Freeman of Wendover and everyone, Councillors and staff, would like to congratulate her on reaching her 100th birthday. Dolly was presented with the “Key of Wendover”, which was lovingly made by our Chairman, during her Birthday Celebrations on Saturday 19 April. We were pleased to put out the flags for the wonderful celebrations. Happy Birthday Dolly!
The Clock Tower repairs are underway and the plan is for all works to be complete by Wendover Celebrates! on 25 May. Many congratulations to Dolly Saville. I hope that Dolly enjoys her day as much as everybody has enjoyed preparing for her very special celebration. Car parking is still high on the agenda. Constructive discussions have been taking place with AVDC and will continue. Plans for commemorating WW1 are also underway. An open meeting will take place on 30 April and as soon as plans have been firmed up they will be published. The Parish Council has decided on the points it wishes to emphasise for the Petition against the HS2 Hybrid Bill currently going through Parliament. Discussions continue with the Wendover Society, Halton PC and Action Against HS2, the Petition will be submitted shortly. Robert Duggan, Chairman

Councillor Co-option We still need another Councillor but unfortunately the two people who did not win the election have not put themselves forward for co-option. Everyone has the right to call an election, but should be aware that the cost to the Parish Council was £3487.82. We hope to have more interest from individuals for a co-option in June, currently we only have one candidate. Please consider joining us, we are a dedicated group of local people working for the Community.
Local Produce Market Manor Waste 9am to 1pm Saturday 17 May Clock Tower Progress Now that the scaffolding is erected the builders and conservation experts have been able to thoroughly inspect the damaged structure for the first time and the news is good. Much of the damage can be repaired using tried and tested methods that don’t require the drastic dismantling that was, at first, thought necessary. This means that the project will proceed to schedule and that budget over-runs should be avoided. In fact we might find a small saving results from this new approach. There was a concern that we may have bats in the belfry which could have delayed the start of the work, but that has proved to be unfounded. The Clerk has now relocated to a small office above Twist, should you need to visit please telephone first and make an appointment. The phone number is the same. The CIO office has relocated to the Library.
Defibrillators Councillor co-option will take place at the Parish Council Meeting in the Library Room on Monday 2 June at 7.30pm
There are a number of defibs already in Wendover apart from the two being installed at each end of the High Street. If you know of any please tell us their location so we can produce an up-to-date list.
Hanging Baskets
Allotments
Last year the flower baskets in the High Street were a great success, hopefully to be repeated this year. They should be put up in May once there is no further risk of frost.
With the allotment year just beginning now is an ideal time to get started! Three allotments have become available, please contact the Clerk’s office if you are interested.
