Wendover Celebrates will return in May 2016. The Directors are currently in discussion with potential venues in order to secure a specific date but most likely will be Sunday 1 May to fall in with the Bank Holiday. As many already know, the operations of the company are the responsibility of the directors who are supported by a wider committee of volunteers. We are very lucky to have a small number of volunteers who are returning to help with the next event but we need more support to make sure this happens. The Directors are keen to attract volunteers who would like to sit on any of the the three committees; Finance, Marketing & Logistics particularly if you have professional expertise in those areas. If you don’t, please don’t let that stop you. There are people from all backgrounds getting involved in all sorts of ways, so if you would like to lend a hand in however large or small a way please get in touch: info@wendovercelebrates.org.uk. Wendover people have commented that a crane is dominating the skyline as Wendover News goes to press. Winterton House in Hale Road was built in 1871-3 as the Vicarage for Wendover. Designed by the architect George Devey it was awarded Grade II listing on 11 October 1985 and is English Heritage Building ID: 42808. The crane is being used by Ortus Homes to create Ridgeway Place, which will contain 21 luxury apartments: 5 in the old building, the others new build.

OCTOBER 1915
During October there was much activity in the Balkans area. The Triple Alliance – Germany, Austria and Bulgaria – attacked Serbia and the capital of Serbia, Belgrade, was virtually destroyed. Many Serbian civilians were killed by the occupying troops. An Anglo-French force landed in Salonika in Greece to support Serbia. The Montenegrin frontier was attacked by Austrian troops. On the Western Front fighting continued around Loos. Nurse Edith Cavell was shot by the Germans for helping British prisoners to escape from Belgium into Holland. World opinion was outraged. It was in October 1915 that Samuel Harding of Wendover enlisted. Samuel was one of the 11 children born to George and Ann Harding of Dundee Cottage, Aylesbury Road - where the Health Centre now stands. In addition, George and Ann adopted Ann’s nephew, Harry Caudrey, who grew up in the Harding household. Four of the 11 children died in infancy and the mother Ann died in 1902, leaving 10 year old Annie to care for the young family. Of the surviving five sons George, the eldest, was the only one not to join the Army. The other four boys served

during the war and three of them – Edward, Samuel and Sydney were killed. The second son, Samuel, was born in 1887 and before the war worked as a Haybinder. He enlisted in the Royal Garrison Annie, Sydney, Charlotte and Artillery and Ewart, taken around the time fought in France of their mother’s death. and Belgium. Samuel took part in the Passchendaele offensive and it was during the final push to take Passchendaele village that Samuel was wounded. He died of his wounds on 29 November 1917.
Somme in France the Battalion Headquarters, in which he was working as an orderly, received a direct hit from an enemy mortar. Sydney was severely wounded and died on 11 March 1917. The Bucks Advertiser of 24 March reported that “Sincere sorrow has been occasioned amongst his many friends in the district by the news that Pte Harding... has made the supreme sacrifice by giving his life for his country...He was 23 years of age and before the war had been employed as a gardener”.
The youngest Harding brother, Ewart, after unsuccessfully attempting to join the Army aged 16, eventually enlisted in the 3rd Battalion Worcestershire Regiment. He saw active service in France and Belgium and survived the war, as did his cousin Harry Caudrey who served with the 2/4 Battalion Ox and Bucks. The Harding family had gone beyond the call of duty and paid a great price. Five members had fought in various theatres of the war-Mesopotamia, France Edward, the third son, was a Regular soldier and Belgium and three of them had died. Youth Wendover Youth Centre is a place for young people to learn, grow, have fun and discover who they are in a safe place that they can call their own. So how could we create a sense of space that celebrates identity and individuality, while also recognising that they

belong to different groups and the Youth Centre? We brought in Andrea Routledge, a local artist/designer, and started a Space
Creation Project. Andrea came to our three main youth sessions and worked with groups of young people. Everyone had a square of fabric to write their name and things that were important to them and why they enjoyed the group. 64 squares were then sewn together to create the banner. Andrea created the middle piece that brings the whole thing together. The banner project was an incredible piece of youth work that took a term and a half to create. Young people that wouldn’t necessarily engage with art did, and those that would sometimes feel their art work was not good enough, or never got picked to be up on a wall at school or on the fridge at home, created something that they can be proud of for all to see. This project bought young people and groups together, and demonstrates a sense of individual identity. The centre piece creates a sense of unity and belonging. HS2 School’s back and the Select Committee are in business after a summer break. They started hearing new petitions on 7 September and Wendover was clearly in their sights with many local petitions to be heard on that and subsequent days. As you would expect, Wendover Parish Council and Halton Parish Council were due to be heard first especially with many petitioners associating with them. So what happened?
That took some time and then we galloped through the rest of our presentation. I believe the whole team gave a great performance as did our barrister, James, who managed to ensure all the key points were brought out. The engagement with the select committee seemed good and they certainly gave us a good hearing. The Select Committee had set a challenging schedule of petitions to be heard and you will not be surprised that it actually did not finish until 3 minutes past midnight – a tribute to the stamina of the Wendover petitioners and the Select committee. It was pleasing to hear that they laid on a bus to take people back to Wendover at the end of the hearing. The impression I received was that everyone had a good listening to by the committee, although there may have been a bit of frustration that not all slides were shown. Without doubt the committee heard about the concerns and issues facing Wendover. I think it is a great accolade to all those from Wendover who presented to the select committee. That they took the time to prepare, travel and present to the select committee in an awe-inspiring building was really good. It showed that the “individual” can have their say.
Well I have to say we were there early, ready and raring to go. Even second time around it seemed a little bit daunting, and I am sure the heart rate was up. HS2 slowed the proceedings, firstly by announcing various items and then giving a HS2 noise teach in for the new members of the committee. By the time we got going the start time had already slipped by over an hour. One of the challenges we had, as all Wendover petitioners did, was the sheer volume of data that HS2 had released the previous Wednesday. It had meant that not only did we have a lot of reading to do but some of our slides for the Select Committee were already out of date as they were submitted before receiving HS2’s tome. One of the key areas we had to address was the HS2 sound mitigation proposal in lieu of a green tunnel extension. The technical detail was addressed by our sound expert followed I think it should be noted that the Select by HS2’s expert and cross examinations. fair, patiently listening to what they say and treating petitioners courteously. As I have said before, their performance has raised my regard for MPs. Well before they hear the last of the Wendover petitions they will know we want a bored tunnel through the AONB. Let’s hope they are listening and are empowered to act. Following the fun I had on Monday I was there again on Tuesday with Andy Band, Ian Hanson and Peter Lockett (in name) and our hydrogeologist – David Johnson. Our theme was water. Following our presentation, which went well, the Select Committee were sufficiently concerned to ask the technical experts to meet and see what agreement could be reached and report back at 2.00pm. HS2 were their typically arrogant selves but two key agreements were reached. First, the methodology used by our expert was accepted as correct and second, that there was a hydrological risk. We reported back and while HS2 talked down the risk and said they will be addressing this later in the process, we on the other hand explained what the potential size of the risk could be and asked that this be considered when they make their final determination on a Chiltern bored tunnel. Finally, well done to those petitioners who have been heard – you have done us proud, and Good Luck to those still to be heard.

HS2 One interesting idea that came out of the July presentations is the idea that you could bore the whole tunnel from the south all the way through the AONB. Why is this different and good for Wendover? Well first, it means there would not have to be a huge construction camp to the north of Wendover, they just utilise the one to the south for longer. That takes away the traffic and dust concerns with the current proposal. Of course the actual boring of the tunnel will take slightly longer – 5 years, with a slightly faster rate 90/m a week compared to 80/m a week assumed by HS2. Now that appears to be quite realistic given they managed to bore 140/m a week on the channel tunnel going through chalk. The slightly longer bore time is offset by fitting out the tunnel from both ends simultaneously so that it only takes a year. The net result is the time period is the same and it should be a lot cheaper – saving 2 TBM’s and one large construction camp near Wendover.

HS2 = The Rape of the Chilterns
The HS2 Select Committee hearings resumed on Monday 7 September with three days of presentations by Petitioners from Wendover and surrounding villages in the Chilterns. The overwhelming theme throughout was the demand for the Select Committee to recommend a tunnel right through the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) to replace the present proposal of six miles of embankments and viaducts from South Heath to Wendover, which would devastate the area.

Local News Syrian Refugee Crisis
The images of the Syrian refugee crisis that we’ve seen on television and in our newspapers have captivated the nation and much of Europe. It is a humanitarian crisis that is unfolding on our doorstep and one which demands a concerted response from all of us. Further to its appeal for equipment in September, St Mary’s Church, Wendover, has launched a public appeal through which Wendover residents can donate financially to support refugees across Europe and the Middle East. All money raised will be divided equally between the British Red Cross, Médecins sans Frontières and Christian Aid, each of which is working in different ways to relieve the plight of refugees. The Chiltern Brewery, Buckinghamshire and the Chilterns’ oldest independent brewery, has reached the fantastic milestone of 35 years as a local family business. Founded by Richard and Lesley Jenkinson in 1980 when they decided to address the decline in the quality of British beer by starting their own brewery. Their founding principles of wholesome, natural beers using 100% British malt and hops live on today with their two sons, George and Tom Jenkinson, now in charge. The brewery has won many awards over the years which is testament to the high quality, expertise, innovation and a dedicated team. There has been a huge resurgence in brewing in this country over the last couple of years with breweries popping up all over the place (despite pubs closing all over the place, boo!). David Lidington As readers of Wendover News will know, the HS2 Committee agreed in July to extend the tunnel at South Heath and stated that they were ‘minded’ to require an extension to the Green Tunnel south of Wendover unless HS2 Ltd were able to come up with a compelling alternative programme of environmental mitigation. Since then, I have met HS2 Ltd to hear what they had in mind in terms of an alternative package. I have continued to lobby DfT Ministers and members of the Committee and have kept in touch with Wendover and Halton Parish Councils and other local campaigners.

My husband David died 3 months ago. It is only now that I have had the time and the courage to look through the many condolences cards and emails I received. There is a big pile from friends in Wendover and I am taking the liberty to use Wendover News to thank everyone for their love, concern and prayers. They are a great comfort. The money from all the gifts received instead of flowers amounted to over £850 which was sent to Tearfund, one of David’s favourite charities. On the whole this season has been a poor one for honey production; the hot dry July seemed to hold back a lot of the usual summer forage for the bees. The infestation of wasps this Autumn has been an issue as they have been robbing weaker honeybee colonies. All in all it has been an interesting but not outstanding honey year. All the same, this month there are several Honey Shows where our members compete. The Bucks County Beekeepers Association Honey Show will be held on 10 October at John Colet School. As well as the Show, the county AGM will be held plus there will be workshops and lectures covering such topics as Encaustic Art and Solitary Bees. Our AGM and Honey Show will be held on 21 October and finally the National Honey Show 29 - 31 October. Last year Bucks won the Smallholders Shield for the most points at the National Show. RAF Halton Police and Security Flight played a huge part in the recent Station exercises conducted as part of the main Exercise FIVE ARROWS recently. The morning saw the reporting and reaction processes put to the test in an aircraft crash incident on the airfield. The Emergency Response Plan was followed by MPGS in calling out the necessary personnel to attend the incident. The cordon and Forward Control Point was immediately put in place by the MPGS whilst the RAF Police reacted by setting up an Incident Control Point.

Tribute: Christopher Lake Wendover has recently lost one of its most remarkable residents, Anthony Christopher Lake, an unassuming and intelligent man with an immense regard for humanity. A caring man who enriched the lives of so many people. Born in 1920, his early childhood was happy if unconventional. When he was 13 years old he attended what he described as “an unusual school with about 75 other pupils who came from many different countries” which no doubt helped him become so accepting of others. When he was 14, he visited Greece and Turkey, thereby kick starting a lifelong love of Greece. The trip also inspired him to present his own plans for solving the problems in the Balkans to the Turkish Ambassador’s Private Secretary. His first steps as a committed peacemaker. Christopher left school at 15 and went into farming, but was not happy. He was drawn by the Eastern Mediterranean and travelled across Europe to Turkey, only arriving back from his second trip the day before World War 2 was declared. Already a committed Christian, Christopher was moving toward Quakerism so military service troubled him. Christopher could not be discharged during war so, with the help of Michael Tippett the composer, he absconded and was later court-martialled as a conscientious objector and served 3 months in prison. In 1943 Christopher became Travelling Secretary of the Friends Peace Committee and soon after joined the League for Democracy in Greece. In 1944 he married his first wife Hazel, the mother of his daughters Eleni & Tina. Unfortunately so much travelling, attending the Peace Association, CND meetings, talking
with Greek & Turkish leaders for the Peace continued to give Greek lessons, notably to for Cyprus Committee, including Archbishop Professor Brian Woledge, then in his 90’s. Leni was concerned that Christopher, whose hair was thinning, didn’t get sun stroke or burn. Even in their late 70s they enjoyed a wonderful trip to Mount Sinai and St Catherine’s Monastery.
Their cottage was always full of interesting and stimulating people from all walks of life. Christopher was Leni’ s devoted companion and carer as her health deteriorated which eventually brought about the move to Cherry Trees. There, friends continued to enjoy and cherish visits with this exceptional man who Christopher had a lifelong interest in gave and inspired such love. Local Face: Peter James Peter James and his wife, Liz have lived in group covering topics such as whether or Wendover for 32 years. Their three children not we should get rid of Trident, to issues grew up here, attending the local schools, surrounding the funding of faith schools. including Wendover Middle School (as it was then called) where, for fifteen years, Liz was a teacher. Peter grew up in Retford in Nottinghamshire and attended the local grammar school before Leeds University, where he graduated in English Literature. He began his career with Marks and Spencer, before joining Mothercare in the early seventies. In 1984 he moved into marketing with Aspen Television, then to Terence Conran’s empire as chief executive of Conran Design Group. In 1988 he returned to Mothercare as chief executive of their UK and European operation. Peter has been heavily involved in local activities both before and since his retirement. In 1980 he worked with local charities to found Aylesbury’s first Gateway Club for children and adults with physical and learning disabilities. In 1983 he spearheaded the fundraising campaign to raise money for the construction of Wendover’s much needed St Mary’s Centre and, for the last twenty years, he was secretary and treasurer of the Friends of St Mary’s Church. More recently he has become an active member of Wendover U3A and now runs a monthly discussion
Since retirement Peter and Liz spend much of their time travelling throughout Europe, with trips as far afield as southern Italy and the Arctic Circle. Meanwhile, Peter’s main pastime is writing, which he has continued since his university days. “For many years,” he says, “I just wrote short stories, with no thought of trying to get them published. Then I decided to have a go at a novel. It took five years, but when I finally produced ‘Deferral of Guilt’, I was persuaded by family and friends to send it to a publisher. To my

surprise, Macmillan rang me back within a week saying they were keen to publish, but could I commit to producing two more novels within eighteen months, preferably featuring the same characters? Unhappy at the prospect of being chained to my computer for that length of time, I declined.” With that door closed, in 2012 Peter decided to self publish “Deferral of Guilt” on Amazon and was astonished to see it climb their top 100 charts to reach number one in both the Crime and General Fiction categories, outselling at one point even JK Rowling! Now, three years later he has launched his second novel, “Seeds of Doubt”. Says Peter, “I was lucky with ‘Deferral of Guilt’, in that I launched it just as Kindle sales were really taking off, so I am not expecting the same runaway success with ‘Seeds of Doubt’. But my main pleasure was in writing it. Matters Arising Wendover Parish Council Page
View from the Chair
Once again the last few weeks have seen huge efforts by the POP Group and Halton and Wendover Parish Councils preparing for their appearance at the HS2 Select Committee. Thanks are due to the Wendover Chamber of Trade and Commerce who provided excellent input for the business side of our presentation. More detail and analysis appears in Brian Thompson’s report on page 16. Being the first to appear after the summer recess on Monday 7 September did have its advantages – one being that we could get a train back to Wendover at a sensible hour (the session finished at 12.03am!). Again it was great seeing so many familiar faces at the Hearing. Having returned home and watched proceedings at my leisure (parliamentlive.tv), I have to congratulate everyone who appeared. There were no boilerplate presentations – it was all from the heart! I have to congratulate in particular those individuals who appeared on their own and gave passionate presentations. Many had to wait a long time and endure a coach journey in the early hours back to Wendover (provided generously by the SC). I’m convinced that the Select Committee is listening, and will continue to listen, to the people of Wendover. Let’s keep it going. On other matters, we welcome Kevin O’Neill as a new Parish Councillor and are looking
forward to the Christmas Lights Switch On taking place on Friday 4 December. Great strides have been made on the WW1 Commemorative Quilt which will be completed by November ready for its launch around Remembrance day. The Manor Waste refurbishment will be starting in the New Year and we hope to complete by the end of March 2016. Finally, congratulations are due to the Wendover Society who celebrated their 50th birthday on Saturday 19 September. Robert Duggan, Chairman

At the Local Produce Market each month the Parish Council allocates one free stall to a local charity. It is time to apply for 2016. If you are interested please contact the Clock Tower.
