Thanks to Wendover Toddlers!

The Wendover Swimming Pool would like to thank Wendover Toddlers for the kind donation of their remaining funds to the pool. This is a very generous gesture; we shall use the funds to buy swimming toys for toddlers to play with. Our gain is Wendover’s loss - we were very sad to hear that Wendover Toddlers is to close after 45 years, particularly given that one factor in that decision is a lack of volunteers. A number of facilities in Wendover for young people rely on volunteers: Girl Guides and Scouts; football and cricket; the library and the pool are just some. Please volunteer and help to keep Wendover the great community it is! Trustees of the Wendover Swimming Pool

Toddler Thanks

Thank you to everyone who came to the last Wendover Toddlers session, and to Helen Brawn from Sing & Sign for providing free entertainment. We would like to thank all members for supporting the group and everyone who has contributed to the committee duties over the years. A big thank you must go to Grant at Tesco Express for his continued support with donating dried goods for our drinks and snack times since the new healthy snack time came into place in 2014, as well as the chocolate cakes for our last session. APRIL 1916

In Mesopotamia (present day Iraq) the third attempt to raise the siege of Kut failed. On 29 April 1916 the British forces under General Townshend surrendered to the Turks. The siege had lasted 146 days. 9,000 British and Indian troops were taken prisoner. The Irish rebellion against British rule – the Easter Rising – began on 24 April in Dublin. By the end of the month the rebellion had ended and the Irish leaders were executed. German battlecruisers bombarded Yarmouth and Lowestoft. The Battle of Verdun continued with much bloodshed. On the Western Front small scale attacks, mining and shelling were endemic. Wendover ’s f o r m e r postman, Sergeant A r t h u r Tre a d way of the 7th Battalion the Duke of C o r n w a l l ’s Light Infantry, was reported missing on 11 April 1916. The Wendover Magazine of September 1916 recorded that after he was wounded near Ypres, Arthur was moved to a dressing station which was then shelled and completely

destroyed. The British and German Red Cross Societies searched hospitals in the area, but there was no trace of Arthur. In September the War office declared Arthur “missing, presumed dead”. Arthur, who left behind a wife and four small children, has no known grave. Arthur Treadway enlisted as a Regular soldier with the Duke of Cornwall’s in January 1896, claiming that he was aged 18 when, in fact, he was only 15. He spent seven years in the army, mainly in India, and then nine years as a Reservist. After leaving the army Arthur became a postman, initially in London and then in Wendover. In September 1914 Arthur re-enlisted in his old Regiment and became a sergeant. He was posted to France in March 1916 and had scarcely been in the Ypres area for a month before he was killed.

The anonymous writer of the leading article in the April 1916 edition of the Wendover Magazine proposed that a committee should be formed to ensure that the prosperity enjoyed by Wendover since the beginning of the war should continue in peace time. The writer noted that men who had earned 15 shillings a week before the war were now

earning three times that mount; that the hotels were full; all the small apartments were rented out; that there was full employment; and that tradesmen had increased their turnover enormously. He advised that now was the time to plan Wendover’s future as a health resort. “The air on the hills is as pure as any sea-side resort, and is free from fog and mists. A few motor and cycle trips to places of interest and a small guide book would aid the prosperity of Wendover”. He advised that houses should be roomy, light and well-ventilated; diet must include milk, fat, and fruit, “all abounding in the Vale of Aylesbury”. In April 1916 the editor of the Parish Magazine, Mr Black, suggested that Wendover was now of sufficient importance that it should be an urban authority rather than a parish. The Chairman of the Parish Council, Mr H. Wood, said that: “... he did not think that the present time was opportune to apply for such powers, as it would certainly mean increased expenditure”. Lipreading Classes

Sylvia Irvine Robertson has been a student with Judy Perry (see advert page 5) for more than a year. Sylvia has this to say about Judy’s class: “I joined a lipreading class in January 2015. The class is fun and extremely well-planned. It has given me the confidence to manage day-to-day communication problems. “We learn about all aspects of lipreading including vowel and consonant sounds and how they are formed through lip shapes. We also share our experiences and offer each other support. We’re given information about organisations, such as Action on Hearing Loss, and equipment that can help. We’re also given advice on how to minimise the impact of hearing loss in many everyday situations. “Attending the lipreading class has helped me face my situation more positively. It’s both a form of therapy and a tool to improve communication. It demands commitment, but it’s so rewarding.”

Business Forum Madness or Genius at King & Queen? create a truly inspiring and collaborative space Absolute madness, or a stroke of genius? Giving up your career of 35 years in the music business to take over a village pub, might seem like the former to many, but for Pete and Shelley running a pub in their home town was a lifelong dream. So when the King and Queen became available at almost the exact time that Pete had taken the momentous decision to make a career change, it seemed like perfect serendipity. Pete says, “We had always talked about running a pub, so when our son (all three of our children and our five grandchildren live in Wendover, too) saw the sign outside the pub, we thought it was the ideal opportunity. “I want to bring continuity and consistency back to the K&Q, but at the same time inject some of the zeitgeist and imagination that has perhaps been lacking in recent years. It’s a lovely old pub, with a sweet little garden and it deserves to be at the heart of village life. As well as taking inspiration from my time in the music industry, I want to engage with the local community and

- something that people feel they really have a stake in. Great drinks, honest food and an eclectic programme of live music and events, are at the heart of what we want to achieve. “We have a lot of things in mind over the coming months, but also love the prospect of Wendover residents getting in touch and bringing their enthusiasm and ideas to us. We really feel that a truly great pub is something that the whole town can feel a part of. Having spent the first couple of months settling in, we kicked off properly with a new menu in MidMarch and events started around then, too. “There’ll be a Beer Festival over the May Bank Holiday weekend, coinciding with Wendover Celebrates. I was delighted when I heard that the theme was The Wild West, as it gave me the opportunity to indulge one of my musical passions, so the theme for the Beer Festival will be (loosely) Country and Western. So dig out your cowboy hats and boots and call in for beer, a bite to eat and some good times.” Advert p 30.

Why Wendover Celebrates…

For those of you who have lived in Wendover for years or even grown up here you may remember the Wendover Carnival, which was held annually for many years. Even if you are relatively ‘new’ to Wendover it’s hard to miss the legacy that lives on through Wendover Celebrates. Set-up to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012, the first Wendover Celebrates event was such a resounding success that the directors and committee all agreed that Wendover deserved a regular community event. “The goal of Wendover Celebrates is to foster community spirit amongst as many sections of the community as possible and it’s a great platform to raise funds for local projects, clubs and charities. It also gives the people of Wendover an opportunity to celebrate everything they love about living here, and showcase what a great place Wendover is!” WC Director Bob Duggan

Don’t take our word for it . . .this is what people said (on Facebook) about the last event!: • A great event, very well organised, both day and night - huge well done to all involved in it! • Brilliant day and fantastic community spirit! Thank you so much to the WC committee for superb organisation and event management. • Great day . . .great atmosphere . . . Blessed with the weather . . . and my daughter loved We offer a unique experience being part of the parade . . . Had a great time!! travel ensuring comfort,

It’s not all about what we do on the pitch, we are always working hard behind the scenes too. Most recently, our Chairman has attended a meeting at the MK Dons stadium as part of the FA Charter Standard forum to discuss ways to prevent the decline in Men’s adult football across Bucks & Berks which naturally as a club is hugely important to us. As a club we love to get involved in the local community so this year you will find us doing our bit on the bar & BBQ, alongside our sister club the Wendover Sparrowhawks, at this years Wendover Celebrates which is set to be bigger and more fun than ever.

Aden is also this month’s player of the month in recognition of his commitment and dedication to the club. On pitch news, the First are through to the semi-finals of the Marsworth Senior Cup which will be played at Fairford Leys on Saturday 9 April.

The final few matches in the “Short Mat” leagues have now been completed with one of teams finishing as “Runners Up” - a very good effort. There will be a Photo Quest in Wendover on 3 April (a new date) which involves members seeking the location of a series of photographs which have been taken in and around the “village”. A cream tea will follow along with a prize presentation for the team that found the most points of contact.

This month we have had a new appointment within the club, Aden McLaughlin who has played for the club

Club Corner The entire match lasted over 4 days and our girls played continuously for a solid hour, with no subs – which was definitely a challenge for their fitness! The Sparrowhawks played a division 2 team from Kent – but despite the obvious gap in divisions, they put up a brilliant fight, initially matching the more experienced side goal for goal. The match ended a respectable 41-31 to the opposition. The girls played absolutely brilliantly – and even got a special mention from the umpire who said our wonderful goal keeper “got more interceptions than some England players”. HS2 HS2 Focus Groups Ipsos MORI have been commissioned to carry out focus groups by HS2 Ltd. On Thursday 10 March two such focus groups were hosted in the Red Lion. One was for over 40s, the other for under 40s. Catherine Waterman from The Flower Gallery was in the latter group. She was appalled at the lack of knowledge of HS2 by the rest of her group. Here is some of what she wrote that night: As I work on the High Street I hear a lot of stories about people who are directly affected and I’m not sure everyone truly knows how awful it can be for some people knowing that their homes, incomes and lives become dependent on the company HS2 Ltd. It’s easy to talk about “people who are directly affected” but it’s actual heartache and depression that some people are experiencing.

Please continue to think about what HS2 will do to our community through construction and what kind of village it may have become when it’s finished.

You won’t be able to get across this construction easily. All I can think is the number of trains that this new northern part of the network is going to need and how every single one is going through the bottleneck at the bottom where Wendover sits.

The Fight Goes On! In spite of receiving almost 200 petitions from Wendover, Dunsmore and Halton, The Select Committee of the House of Commons virtually ignored our voice, recommending only a 100 metre extension to the Green Tunnel and the erection of grotesque, 6m high sound barriers north and south of our town. The fight now moves to a new Select Committee in the House of Lords, where we will press the case for a bored tunnel for Wendover. To make that happen, we need your help. We will be urging you to submit a new round of petitions. We also need your financial support to hire experts, print posters and flyers, prepare for the new Select Committee’s visit … and build a full-size mockup of the proposed sound barriers on the Manor Waste – sound barriers that will be more than 50% higher than the Berlin Wall! This is our last and best chance to protect our town. The students have worked tirelessly, well done to everyone involved.”

Tribute: Margaret Coles The Coles family are sad to announce Margaret’s busy, but relatively normal that Margaret Cecelia Coles passed away existence crashed to an end with the death peacefully in Cherry Trees residential home of Ted, in 1972. on Christmas Eve 2015, aged 84. As her family grew up in the 1970s and 80s Margaret was a remarkable woman who lived the home in Manor Crescent was the scene a remarkable life and brought love and joy to of many teenage gatherings. Margaret had all who knew her. She will be remembered her own particular means of bringing these as a wife (twice), a widow (twice), mother events to a close – usually by hoovering to 6 and grandmother to 13. At heart a around the various bodies dozing on the natural communicator, teacher and artist, lounge floor followed by a big fry up to send Margaret was a beautiful, intelligent, wise, people on their way at dawn! Margaret unconventional, independent, creative, had great inner strength and brought up colourful, free-spirited and resilient woman her six children by herself. She saw them off who experienced more than her fair share to University, move away and settle down, of ups and downs. If life can be likened to develop careers, produce grandchildren and a rollercoaster, then Margaret’s life was a move through their own lives. proper “Big Dipper” with the very highest of highs and the lowest of lows. Having lived in Wendover for well over 50 years Margaret’s formative years were in West Margaret became a very well-known and wellLondon. Born in Gunnersbury in September loved member of the wider village community. 1931, Margaret Cecelia Butler was the Try as you might, some of you may not be youngest member in a complex family able to forget her involvement in the more structure with a brother, a half-sister and social activities of the local sports clubs brother and two step-sisters. After school dancing on the tables at a Football Club she worked as a secretary to the Board of ‘do’ at the Spinning Wheel or serving white Directors at J Lyons in Hammersmith before onion sauce sandwiches to the Aylesbury enrolling for teacher training at Digby Stuart West Indians cricket side. Several generations College in Roehampton. A reference from of school children will remember her as a the Principal reads: “Art is her Special Field supply teacher who helped them to learn of Study and Margaret has done some to read. Margaret’s underlying passion and interesting work in this subject…. She will talent, however, was art. At one time a be a valuable member of staff and a good very active member of Wendover Art Club, influence in a school”. Indeed she was - as her enthusiasm ebbed and flowed over the an Infant Teacher at Sheringdale School in years, but was reinvigorated by a printing Southfields, between 1953 and 1957. course in later life at Amersham College. In April 1957, Margaret married Edward Coles in Chiswick and it was not long before her life took a different direction as a very full-time mother! Ted and Margaret moved out of London to Wendover in 1959 with two young children. Family life was hectic and a further four children arrived with all six under the age of ten at one point!

Her abilities were recognised in 1993 when one of her works was exhibited by the British Society of Women Artists in Central Hall, Westminster. Her output came in explosive bursts and the resultant portfolio of work, whilst sometimes a little hard for others to interpret and for her to share, is absolutely amazing in its talent, breadth and depth –

a wide variety of media and subject matter – trees, abstract, religious, cityscapes. Her ability to appreciate and discuss art remained with her until the end. Many years ago a rumour of Margaret’s death spread around the village, prematurely, and she survived a multitude of health challenges in her long and eventful life. Her greatest fight was against cycles of what is now known as bi-polar disorder with long episodes of extreme highs and lows. The family are very grateful to all who got Margaret through her darkest days and learned to accept the extraordinarily creative outbursts and sometimes outrageous energy of her highs. In memory of Margaret, donations were given to help the work of MIND – the mental health charity, justgiving. com/remember/245232/Margaret-Coles. Mauve and white tulips were chosen for her funeral at St. Anne’s - in memory of Edward too as the garden at Manor Crescent came into bloom each spring with bulbs carefully brought back from his business trips to Amsterdam. Mauve and white because they were colours Margaret so suited and so often wore. But what clinched it for the family was when Pippa the florist said, “the trouble with tulips is that once in water or oasis they can behave ‘outrageously’”. Just perfect then. Margaret was laid to rest in St Mary’s where she is reunited in a grave with Ted. The Order of Service at her funeral included her own water colour of this final resting place which she called “Journey’s End”. In time, the family will exhibit Margaret’s art work – please do come and share in this wonderful legacy.

Local Face: Jackie Sambucci Jackie Buggey was a wartime baby, born in Clay Lane in November 1943. Her earliest memory is before she went to school, dragging wood across the fields which are now the main school campus in Wendover. She remembers climbing on the back of Charlie Spittal’s horse and cart with other local children, mostly from Clay Lane, to ride down Wharf Road towards the farm buildings in The Pennings, now converted into dwellings. When it was time for Jackie to start school she went to a new prefab building along Heron Path, outside the main campus of Wendover School near the Clock Tower with Mr Edgington as Headmaster. That school has now been turned into houses and the prefab which for many years was the Headquarters of the Venture Scouts is now but a ruin. Jackie’s family, including her parents, an aunt and uncle and her two sisters, were thrilled to move to a new 4 bedroomed house in Woollerton Crescent. Jackie was in the first intake at John Colet School with Mr Crick as headmaster. She founded a dynasty as both her children attended JCS and her grandchildren, Holly and Jack, are there now. Nearly all Colet pupils left school at 15 in those days and along with many of the girls she found shop work in Wendover, starting at Mr Renn’s toys and fine china shop where

the Post Office shop is now. In the late 1950s the High Street was full of individually owned shops including Woodwards the Chemist where Christopher Pallet and The Barbershop are now. Wheeler’s Grocery occupied what is now Agora and the Post Office. That part of the High Street also had a wet fish shop and Webb’s fruiterer plus International Stores. Major Allbrook, landlord of the Red Lion, lived with his family in what is now Hamnett Hayward. There were two pubs - The Swan and The Two Brewers then a cottage with two sets of steps up and the bank - Smith’s Bank (Lord of the Manor) before it was absorbed into the NatWest. The Manor Waste offered Sargeant’s Chemists, Friar Tuck Restaurant and Alex & Co, a TV shop. In Pound Street were Nicholls Stores and the Anne Boleyn Bakery. Starting again at the bottom of the High Street were Hampshires the Ironmonger and Hardware store, Daniel’s paper shop, Ivatt’s shoe shop. Where Brown & Merry is now was a private house. Next to the Red Lion were greengrocers and Smith the butcher. Hogarth House was another greengrocers next to a bank and allotments before the King’s Head pub. Then a linen, clothes and haberdashery shop, Bell’s. Antiques at Wendover was the Post Office then private houses, Godwin’s the newsagent and Burke’s Jewellery.

By now Jackie was working part-time at the Chemist’s with her Clay Lane childhood friend Jenny and stayed 17 years. She saw a notice in 1988 for receptionist at an optometrist’s opening a branch in Wendover and that is when she first met Ivan Cammack. She has been with the company since they started in Holly Court and is now on the High Street. During that time she has moved with the new technology and become computer literate. Jackie loves her work and has no plans yet to retire.

The local girls had plenty of boys to choose from, extras supplied by RAF Halton, and in 1962, Jackie met Victor Sambucci from Brighton who was a chef at RAF Halton. They married in 1964 and soon moved into a small cottage in Clay Lane, now replaced by The Maples. Richard was born in the RAF Hospital in 1969 and Kim in 1971. Jackie was able to return to work part-time as Victor had moved into civilian work so he could look after the children on Saturdays and they moved to a 3-bedroom house in Tring Road in 1972 then downsized to Vinetrees in 2005.

Hampden Pond

If you were wandering past the Hampden Pond in early March you may have witnessed our intrepid contractors working on pond improvements. The Wendover Parish Council commissioned a report on the pond back in 2013 and are using that report as a blueprint for improvements that will benefit anglers and make the area a haven for wild creatures.

Current works include the refurbishment of 7 fishing pegs, the clearance of some water lilies, undergrowth and overhanging branches from the swims and the replacement of two benches. This should address some of the issues that fishermen have drawn to our attention and improve the pond side views and access for everyone. Future works will enhance biodiversity by introducing reed beds and some new bank side planting.

Clean for the Queen

The Queen’s 90th birthday will be celebrated on 21 April. There has been a countrywide ‘Clean for the Queen’ during March. We are asking everyone in Wendover, residents and businesses, to join in the clean-up effort and tidy the back and front of properties including the grass verges etc. An ideal opportunity to spruce up Wendover and celebrate the Queen’s birthday.
