JUNE 1916

On 5 June 1916 Lord Kitchener, the British Secretary of War, died when the cruiser HMS Hampshire hit a mine and sank northwest of the Orkney Islands. Kitchener and his staff were on their way to Russia to discuss the progress of the war. The Military Service Act (2) was passed by the British Government making all men aged 18-41 liable for conscription into the armed forces. In Galicia the Russians, under General Brusilov, had a major victory over the Austro-Hungarian army. On the Western Front preparations were made for the Somme offensive including a British artillery bombardment which started on 24 June and lasted one week. The bombardment could be heard across Southern England. In the Middle East the Arabs, aided by British forces under T. E. Lawrence, carried out a successful revolt against the Turks. Two months before the Arab revolt, in April 1916, a Turkish army had taken the town of Kut in Mesopotamia, now Iraq. 8,000 British and Indian troops were captured and force-

marched 500 miles to Aleppo. It was during this brutal march, around 20 June, that a Wendover soldier, Edward Thomas Harding, died of exhaustion and mal-nourishment. Edward Harding, a Regular soldier with the 1st Ox and Bucks, was the son of George Harding of Aylesbury Road. Three Harding brothers were killed in the war.

his shoulder and was now applying to be a despatch rider in the Royal Engineers.

The saga of the Public Convenience in Back Street continued. Once again the Parish Council was obliged to note that the Convenience had suffered “considerable damage”. Just why this regular vandalism took place was a mystery then, as it is now. Harry Langford of Boddington Cottage, Mike Senior & Val Moir Wendover Dean, also died in June 1916. You Write You Write May 2016

On the You Write page (20) of the May 2016 edition of Wendover News a letter was published accusing a Wendover company of a rip-off. The usual practice of Wendover News is to allow the accused company to reply in the same edition if at all possible. It was the fault of Wendover News that it did not happen on this occasion. No company was named but the only Wendover company to identify itself as a High Street carpet retailer is replying below:

How can a refund be a rip-off?

We were a bit taken aback by the letter that was printed in last month’s Wendover News entitled “Wendover Shops - Good Deal?”. We think it was referring to us here at Cromptons, as Mr Neil Shaw recently cancelled an appointment with us - but it wasn’t quite as straightforward as presented. We do, indeed, reserve the right to charge to come out to a customer, however this is fully refundable against a subsequent order. It is the same charge whether we are measuring for curtains, blinds or carpets for one small bedroom or for a whole house prior to placing an order, or if someone wants us to visit them in their home to discuss their ideas. In this instance Mr Shaw’s partner came into the shop requesting a measure for an insurance claim. We explained that

we charge to visit and why, and that this 175 More Houses in Wendover? was fully refundable against an order. We now await AVDC’s decision on Friday 17 June. The Mr Shaw came in later the same day to say initial objection stage was, I believe, initiated how unhappy he was about paying, and by residents of the most directly affected, requested a refund. This we gave without western area, of the community, but, quite question as we wouldn’t want any customer rightly, the main emphasis of the objections to be unhappy in paying for a service. We was the lack of infrastructure to cope with explained to him that we charge because the current population, let alone another the whole process of selection, visiting, 175 houses on the extreme outskirts of measuring and working out and writing up Wendover. the estimate can take several hours of our time. We also explained that if he did not want to pay the visit fee, he could send in his AVDC’s decision will not be the end of the own measurements and we would happily matter. In the event of refusal, no doubt CEG work out an estimate for him based on those. will appeal using its expertise and money. Should the application be approved there We also think that by charging for this service must be channels for the community to we can discuss with our customers what is appeal. This anticipated next phase needs to best for them. Shops who say they provide have leadership with knowledge, expertise this service for free need to cover the cost of and time. But by whom? Local News Perch Spinney

We are pleased to report that real progress is now being made in Perch Spinney. Felling has been completed so, as summer approaches more light will filter into the woodland, and the trees and forest floor will regenerate and grow. Now that the public pathway has been agreed with the Council, the fellers have worked hard to create a clear channel up through the Spinney along Halton Lane, joining the reservoir footpath and the canal tow path. By using this newly established path, the public will allow the rest of the forest floor to recover and we look forward, in the coming years, to see it carpeted in bluebells once more.

Finally, they were extremely interested to hear a well-presented talk by another Wendover teenager about his experiences while attending the 23rd World Scout Jamboree in Japan in 2015. Since last year’s AGM, the Trust had received 23 applications for grants. 19 of these, totalling £14,856.51, were awarded. At their meeting, the Trustees considered a further 26 applications resulting in a total of £14,510 being paid in grants with a decision on three applications being deferred pending further information. These grants were distributed as follows:Education: £5,800 Elderly: £2,500 Individuals: Decision deferred Medical: £2,000 Organisations: £4,210.

In addition, the second payment of £10,000 to the Wendover Youth Centre, which had been promised at last year’s meeting, was made. The Trustees agreed that they would wish to support future planned improvements at the Wendover Swimming Pool. Two petitions against the construction of HS2 had been presented to the House of Commons Select Committee during the year seeking protection for the Trust’s properties. Also a considerable sum had been spent on refurbishing and updating one of the Trust’s properties. The Trustees agreed that the protection of the assets of the Trust and the heritage of these listed buildings was essential for the benefit of Wendover. Glenys Newman, Clerk

Patron of Halton Heritage

Just one of the many aspects of RAF Halton is the heritage it holds from the earliest days of aviation when in 1913 the previous owners, the Rothschilds, invited Kitchener’s Army and the pre-RAF aviators to train there. The RAF has been training there since its inception in 1918 and much of its early development was determined by the vision of Viscount, Lord Trenchard, colloquially known as the ‘father of the RAF’ who set up the RAF Aircraft Apprentices Training School in 1920. The Halton heritage and its huge amount of artefacts which colour its long and illustrious history are now preserved by no less than 4 committees: the Heritage, Trenchard Museum, Halton House and WW1 Trenches Committees. How fitting then that RAF Halton recently sought a new Patron to its wide and varied heritage estate in the form of the 3rd Viscount, Lord Hugh Trenchard, Honorary Air Commodore and the grandson of the father of the RAF, no less.

Petitions for the House of Lords HS2 select committee are in and the process has started. 822 petitions were submitted of which 344 asked for a long tunnel through the Chilterns. I believe a total of 126 came from Wendover. Support for proper mitigation for HS2 has not dwindled. We hope that the House of Lords select committee will demonstrate their independence in finding the best solution for us.

Eversheds, the lawyers, issued the challenge notices, then HS2 Ltd told some people they would be heard. Eversheds’ letter trumps the HS2 admin letter: the challenges, which include 8 MPs, still stand. It appears that most individuals and some organisations from Wendover have been challenged – Wendover I believe this number shocked the authorities Parish Council with Halton Parish Council and and the promoters. Wendover Celebrated

What a wonderful day was had by all at Wendover Celebrates 2016. Whoever ordered the weather did a superb job and for many it was the start of the Summer. We all hope it wasn’t the whole of Summer! Over 200 people took part in the Parade as it walked from Ashbrook to Chiltern Way Federation School via the High Street. Hundreds lined the streets and “Silver”, the horse ridden by The Lone Ranger whinnied as he entered the High Street. Congratulations to Wendover Panthers Cheerleaders who were judged Best in Parade by DSM, the major sponsor and whose huge vehicles made a spectacular end stop to the Parade. Wendover Panthers were all so very excited and happy to be involved in the Wendover Celebrates Parade, though our arms ached at the end of it. To win the “Best In Parade” was a great surprise and honour for us. We would like to thank Wendover Celebrates for including Wendover Panthers in the celebrations and to the Lionel AbelSmith Trust for the support to help purchase the Panthers T-shirts and matching pompoms. Special thanks to Mrs Jo Braid, our Year 6 teacher, for all the time and encouragement she has shown the whole group. The aim is for Year 5 to take over Wendover Panthers in September when they become Year 6. We wish them every luck and hope they enjoy Cheerleading, the friendship, the team work and the laughs as much as we have. See you all at the Wendover Junior School fête on 18 June for our next public performance. Freya Jones and Lovelia Harrison Wendover Panthers More than 4000 spectators walked patiently to the field and were wowed by all on view. The Wild West theme was a great hit with many stalls and sideshows on offer as well as the different entertainment spaces. The gunfighters and other clearly themed acts were much appreciated while the Dog Show brought along many well-behaved pets. There were plenty of shows on the Main Stage, in the Entertainment Tent and in the Arena. A big thank you to BFS Records which offered more music in the afternoon and early evening on the Saloon Stage. We raised £1,100 for the MS Centre in the Tea Tent which was a wonderful result. Thank you to all the ladies who baked and the volunteers who helped in the tent on the day.

Comments from Wendover Celebrates Facebook:

Emma Salmon: A truly fantastic day! The hard work from all those involved in the planning was clear to see. I have sent you a message with specific feedback. Thank you so very much, we are very grateful and lucky to have such an event. Looking forward to Wendover Celebrates 2018?! Sheelagh Hoffman: Brilliant, well organised event. Enjoyed the afternoon, hog roast was delicious then went back in evening and loved David Bowie tribute. Great atmosphere and superb fireworks to end the night. Well done everyone for all the hard work. Gordon Findlay: Well done to all the volunteers. A great day. Special thanks to Wendover Sparrowhawks who served in the beer tent and Wendover Football Club who served the Hog Roast and Barbecue. The evening was balmy and a wonderful setting for a superb evening concert with a fantastic variety of splendid acts. The children enjoyed their early fireworks - a suggestion by parents. Everyone felt elated as the closing fireworks rounded off a brilliant day. Part of the raffle was drawn during the afternoon with the help of the Krzeminski family, of NK Building & Renovations, the other major sponsor. All winners have received their prizes. To see the list of prize winning numbers go to www.wendovercelebrates.com and the Parish Council noticeboard on the Clock Tower. A good number of people turned up on Monday 2 May to help litter pick and clear away the straw. Thank you to everyone who showed true community spirit, bringing along children to help as well.

Final Comments from the Directors

The Directors would like to thank everyone who helped to make Wendover Celebrates 2016 the outstanding success it was. We’re happy to announce that contributions will be made to The Chilterns MS Centre, Sparrowhawks Netball Team, Wendover Football Club, Little Acorns Kindergarten, Jack in the Box preschool, Wendover Preschool, Wendover Youth Centre and Wendover Swimming Pool. The event cannot take place without great time and effort from a team of volunteers both in the planning stages and on the day itself. If you’d like to get involved in the planning of the next event, please email wendovercelebrates@gmail.com, we’d love to hear from you. Tribute: Michael Tompsett Michael Tompsett was born in the London suburb of Newington Green on 5 June 1932. This meant he was one of millions of evacuees during World War 2, three times in fact. He then went on to National Service, with an Army Commission, serving mostly in Germany. He married Monica in 1959 and they moved to Wendover in 1960. Michael was orphaned shortly afterwards when only in his 30s and this devastated him but he took care to be in close contact with his extended family including an influential farming uncle in Amersham and families living in North Wales. This was where he developed his great affinity with farm animals and dogs.

As a boy Michael had enrolled into the Scout movement and was always loyal to friends made at that time. Michael was thrilled to take his whole family on scouting trips to Sinai and Mexico with these friends. They continued to holiday together even when frailty started to set in.

Michael shared the commute to London with Ian McCraw, a Wendover Scout Leader. He could never persuade Michael to become involved with this local group. Bob Lewis was another commuter who became part of a Daughters Nicola and Polly were born into friendship of half century. a family where both parents were a strong influence. He also audited meticulously. He knew that every penny counts at work and at home. When his daughters married he bonded with his sons-in-law in his own quiet way. He was thrilled when his grandchildren arrived - Abigail, Cador, Hafina, Lili, Lloerhian, Serreni. As one grandchild said - His outward appearance was really scary until you go for a walk and he pulled out a bag of doughnuts and said “Don’t tell Mummy”. He was never happier than when walking with his dog: Coombe Hill, Wellwick Farm, Boddington Hill sliced Mars bars at the ready. He really enjoyed the company of his young grandchildren including being a willing chauffeur. Michael was diagnosed with Parkinsons 5 years ago and passed away on 15 February 2016. Local Face: Richard Peck Richard is from North Lincolnshire and attended Sheffield University, completing a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 2001. He was a Project Manager for GlaxoSmithKline in Harlow, Essex, where he met Rosie. In 2003 they were married in Antigua, only yards from the beach. They have two children, Oliver (10) and Imogen (8). A job opportunity arose in Long Crendon in 2009, and Wendover seemed like the perfect location, especially as Rosie has a twin sister, who lives in Hyde Heath. Richard has had a varied career and for the past decade he has held numerous roles within the cold chain industry, essentially the safe storage and transportation of temperaturesensitive pharmaceuticals across the world. He is well known within the industry and regularly writes white papers and technical reports on hot topics as well as facilitating training courses and providing consultancy support. Eventually, Richard hopes to work for a Non-Governmental Organisation such as UNICEF, supporting the supply of lifesaving

medicines to those in countries where they are not readily available. In Wendover, Richard has a number of roles, mainly thanks to Oliver and his sporting activities! As well as coaching the U10s age group at Wendover Junior Football Club, he has been the club’s secretary for the past three seasons, supporting the chairman and the dozens of age group managers and coaches, as well as ensuring that the many teams across 11 age groups are all affiliated to the appropriate leagues and the FA. The biggest commitment is the club’s annual tournament, the main fundraiser for the club. Nearly 250 teams enter the tournament each year over 1½ days in mid-late June. The organisation for such an event takes a lot of effort but the satisfaction on the Sunday afternoon at the end of another successful year is so rewarding.

Richard is Juniors Manager for Wendover Cricket Club and supports group managers and coaches for children aged 5 to 17, sitting on the club’s management committee. Their outdoor season runs from April to July, extended by organising winter nets in February and March. Most training sessions take place on a Saturday morning at both grounds and there are regularly 80 plus children at the joint under 7s and 9s session. The pavilion serves teas, coffees and snacks for all, along with the BBQ cooking bacon and sausage sarnies, a well-deserved treat after a long week at work! Richard is also an active member of St Mary’s church, sitting on the PCC, regularly involved in services and social events. He manages Movies @ St Marys for both the younger and older generations of the community. His most memorable part of church life (besides his confirmation a few years ago) has to be his role as Joseph in the crib service for the past three years. In addition he sometimes plays football and golf with friends and runs!

Matters Arising Wendover Parish Council Page

View from the Chair

The new Parish Council year has started and my fellow Councillors have again voted me in as Chair of the Council for which, of course, I’m very grateful. However we currently have only 11 councillors (we should have 13!). If you are interested – especially if you are between careers or you have a special skill you think could be useful - any age, any skill but especially a willingness to try something new, please get in touch with the Clerk at the Clock Tower. Wendover Celebrates 2016 seems to have taken place months ago but as I write it’s less than 2 weeks. It was a fantastic turnout by the community both from Wendover and far and wide. The weather held out and as a result we will soon be able to announce by how much charities will benefit from the success of the event. Thanks must go to the committee, volunteers and directors of Wendover Celebrates who put in an incredible amount of time and effort to make sure everything went to plan. Each year is different and WC2018 will be different again. Anybody interested in being involved by becoming a director or volunteer – even two years in advance - will be welcomed on to the team. The team will never be too big so whether you are into site management, entertainment, event management or just want to be involved let me know and we can start planning.

Sadly we have had several instances of vandalism on Parish Council property. Having just spent many thousands of pounds on play equipment at Ashbrook Park, some delightful youngsters piled up earth inside the tube making it impossible for children to play. A local resident kindly cleared it up. Then, probably the same people decided to tip yoghurt and crisps down the same chute – again making it unusable until somebody else cleared it up. I’ve had a similar report of youngsters making play equipment unusable at PMG estate leaving around paraphernalia, cigarettes and generally preventing children from playing on the equipment because either it is unusable or they are too frightened. In my view this behaviour is totally unacceptable. I have been in discussion with the John Colet School management, as well as Thames Valley Police. Hopefully this behaviour will cease. We are also finding a lot of broken glass at the skate park. If these incidents continue please take photographs of the culprits so that appropriate action can be taken. Send them to me. I in turn will forward them onto JCS and TVP. People have to realise that we – the community – have paid for these assets and like anything we own we must look after things in our care.
