The Wendover Swimming Pool

John Colet School and Wendover Swimming are pleased to confirm that agreements on the future of the swimming pool, situated on the school campus, have been finalised and that a long-term lease of the facility to Wendover Swimming has been established. This means that Wendover Swimming CIO, the charity formed to take over the running of the pool, will be able to apply for grants and oversee refurbishments with a view to upgrading the facilities, improving the service it provides to the community and ensuring the long-term viability of the project. Currently the pool provides swimming for families, serious lane swimmers young and old, recreational swimmers, mothers and babies, local primary and secondary schools, several swim schools catering for all ages and abilities, triathlon clubs, Cubs and Scouts, Wendover Youth Club and organisers of local activity camps. All these groups can now continue to swim locally without disruption thanks to the agreement between John Colet School and Wendover Swimming.

Comings and goings

The users of Wendover shops suffered two terrible shocks in June. First, a notice went up stating that Whitewaters in Back Street would close on Sunday 5th. Fortunately a buyer has been found so this flourishing business continues with an extended brunch menu and summer salads. Then Julian Stevens (Local Face Jan 2013) announced that he was closing his hairdressing business on Sat 11th, so his clients from 45 years in that premises have gone into mourning. Julian has been successful in selling the business so it will be refurbished and re-opened soon. Thank you for your service to Wendover. Welcome to Le Sposi which has an open day on Saturday 2 July, 11am to 4pm.

AVDC Local Plan I confirm that at the next cabinet and council meeting the only vote on the Vale of Aylesbury Plan will be approval for the draft plan to go out to consultation. This needs to be approved so that we in Wendover and Halton can put a case as to why we cannot sustain 800 extra houses for reasons we are all aware of ie lack of infrastructure including school places, overloading doctors surgeries and the road network, and the loss of green belt which will lead to coalescence between Wendover and Halton.

Anniversaries! Aston Wine Club 20th anniversary

What a night! In a word, fantastic! We had a bumper crowd at Buckland Village Hall, all intent on celebrating our 20th anniversary in style. And we were privileged to have the company of six of the founder members of the Club – all of whom, I am glad to say, still enjoy their share of wine.

Wendover Twinning Association welcomed a group of 33 Liffréens at Halton House on Friday 13 May. There were speeches by Wing Commander Ray Morley and Bob Duggan, followed by Dawn Rance and Serge Douaglin, who are the current leaders of Wendover and Liffré Twinning Associations.

HS2 On 8 June I went to the House of Lords Select Committee on HS2 to appeal the challenge of Locus Standi against someone I was representing as an agent. It was illuminating to say the least, if not edifying. The HoL select committee is being chaired by ‘dry as dust’ Lord Lord and the focus seemed very much on the legal aspects and jargon involved. Clearly the strategy adopted by HS2 Ltd and the Department for Transport is to minimize the number of petitions that have to be heard. Their approach has been to challenge most individuals and a fair number of organisations. When the petitioner says they are specifically impacted, the promoter’s response is yes but the ‘Parish Council’ will cover this so you do not need to hear them’. As you would expect, they have not consulted the Parish Council about this…. The other major difference to the House of Commons is that you have no right of reply, at least in these appeals; so you give your pitch, Mr Mould or Mr Strachan then proceed to tell the Select Committee that you do not need to

Cleaning for the Queen

23rd April 2016 saw Wendover Evening WI members, armed with bags and grabbers, “cleaning” the streets of Wendover in support of the Country Life “Clean for the Queen” campaign. When this was proposed at our meeting, there was some opposition because members had seen the good work done by our normal street cleaner. As expected, we found very little litter. The exception was cigarette ends. Despite bins being provided to hold them, the butts were scattered all around the ground. We could not understand this thoughtless and antisocial behaviour until someone suggested that people think that cigarette ends will soon biodegrade. Could I use Wendover News to advise such people that this process will take about 12 years. Hopefully knowing this will have a positive impact on our otherwise very clean streets. RAF Halton Thrift Shop Donates To Charities

RAF Halton’s Thrift Shop team, led by organiser, Veronica Tuppen, has made donations to five charities in a cheque presentation at Halton House Officer’s Mess. Soldier, Sailor and Air Force Families Association (SSAFA), First Responders, Riding For The Disabled, Air Ambulance and Blood Bikes were all better off by £750. Veronica explained the purpose of the Thrift Shop to the visitors and thanked her colleagues Paula Wilson, Thelma Philips and Yvonne Yeo for their hard work over the years. She said: “Thelma and Paula have worked at the shop since the TocH shop closed in Wendover about 18 years ago. Yvonne joined them when the Thrift Shop moved to the old Post Office in 2011. The RAF Halton Thrift Shop is a high quality second hand shop that sells unwanted items and raises money primarily for local charities and causes. Wendover Celebrates would like to thank all the generous local businesses which donated so many prizes for the raffle. All raffle prize winners were contacted and all prizes have now been received. The Directors were delighted that over £5,000 was raised for the benefit of local organisations: Sparrowhawks Netball Team; Wendover Football Club; Chilterns MS Centre; Little Acorns Kindergarten; Jack in the Box Preschool; Wendover Preschool; Wendover Youth Centre and Wendover Swimming Pool. Feedback from the community has been very encouraging. Preparations for the next event will start this Autumn - we are hopeful that sufficient volunteers will step forward to enable Wendover Celebrates 2018 to take place.

The young people of Wendover put aside sartorial peer pressure for Wendover Celebrates on Sunday 1 May, grabbed their chaps and joined the parade as cowboy fruit. We also had our very own Harriet dressed

as a Fruity Call bag (a big thank you, Hull family, for all your hard work on the bag). Our young people manned a stall with penalty shoot-outs, guess the name of the meerkat (Cody the cowboy) won by Hannah Edwards, pinball games and of course we sold Fruity Call. Our social enterprise Fruity Call has been run in conjunction with Sweeney’s Budgens since February: fundraising, dehydrating the fruit, designing the bags, producing it and selling at the centre and events across Wendover. As vicar of St Mary’s, Mark has had a key role in many of the activities of local life, not least as a foundation governor of Wendover Junior School. He has been a strong supporter of the work of Wendover Churches Together, which has done a lot to join those of the Christian faith. During his time with us he has overseen the opening of the church shop and office in the High Street, recently renamed JUST, and also the major refurbishment of St Mary’s, completed in 2012. We shall not only miss him very much, but also his wife Ruth. As a licensed lay minister she has provided us with many stimulating and lively sermons. She has been a great support to Mark but has also become very influential in her own right and is now the CEO of Stop the Traffik, for which she was recognised last year with an OBE. We wish Mark and Ruth every blessing and success in their new parish of St Peter’s. There will be a farewell lunch party on Sunday 17 July at St Mary’s Church after the 10:30 service.

Local News Wendover Arm Update

We are pleased to announce that we have received First Round Pass from the Heritage Lottery Fund amounting to £1,627.000. This means that this sum has been earmarked but is not available at this stage. The application was jointly submitted with the canal owner, the Canal & River Trust. We can now progress to Stage 2 of the application process, which is a lengthy and detailed and whilst we are encouraged by our success with the First Round, there is no guarantee of ultimate success. The Wendover Arm Trust has to provide 15% of this sum by way of matched funding and fundraising activities will continue in order to finance this element and continuing restoration costs in the interim. It is hoped that the Second Round application will be made by Spring 2017 with a decision following during the summer. If the bid is successful we will be able to complete Phase 2 of the restoration linking Little Tring with Drayton Beauchamp creating three miles of navigable

Each year volunteers from the “Berks, Bucks & Oxon Wildlife Trust” (the Chilterns Group) hold two big fundraising events in the Memorial Hall, Great Missenden – the, now almost traditional, “Plant and Produce Markets”. The first of this year’s markets attracted over 150 visitors. Thanks to the efforts of some 45 volunteers, it raised £1,200. As always, donated plants made over half of our income - leftover plants went to Lindengate and College Lake. There is more to the event than bargains for local gardeners: a home produce stall, serendipitous items on the White Elephant stall, books, craft, gifts, a weaving demonstration, restored “Workaid” garden tools and something that is growing in popularity year on year, the pop-up café. Tribute: Colin Campbell Dr Colin Deas Campbell FRCGP MBE 06.01.1927 to 09.05.2016 Loving husband to Daphne, and father to Heather, Margaret, Jenny, Susy and Fiona and grandfather to 10. He passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family following illness. Following training at St Thomas’s Hospital he was eventually was offered a job in 1960 as the GP for the village of Waddesdon, Bucks. He was a single-handed, dispensing practitioner with the help of a district nurse and community midwife. He was on duty 24 hours a day until he made an arrangement with a neighbouring surgery in Aylesbury to help with cover and he finally got some weekends and evenings off. His wife Daphne covered the phone and helped as much as she could with the running of the surgery (which was in the house) alongside looking after their family of 5 daughters.

     

He was a dedicated GP for 31 years serving the community and it was not until 1984 he took a partner and then set up a purpose built surgery in the village. He was a well-loved Colin receiving his MBE from m e m b e r HM Queen Elizabeth II of the community and participated and supported many local activities. He retired from practice in 1991 and had to move from Waddesdon as The Roses was a tied house belonging to the Rothschild estate and designated the Doctors house. He moved to Wendover but kept in touch with everyone in Waddesdon.

He became a Governor of the ‘new’ secondary school in the village, Waddesdon Church of England School and was a major part of the development of the school. He served as a Governor for 50 years and only missed one committee meeting. He was nominated for his MBE by the school for his service to the community and received this from the Queen at Windsor Castle on Friday 6 March 2015. A lovely sunny day watched by his very proud family. When Colin and Daphne “retired” to Wendover they were able to continue long term activites including singing in Aylesbury Choral Society (members for over 50 years), and start new ones such as volunteering at Florence Nightingale Hospice Shop and joining Wendover U3A. The impact Colin had in Wendover can be gauged by two Wendover News Local Face entries February 2010 and February 2015. He will be missed.

Local Faces: Pool Trustees If one thing unites the five Wendover Swimming trustees before they embarked on their project to save the pool, it was that none of them ever dreamed of doing such a thing.

They were soon joined by Metropolitan Police officer Brian Devereux and Martin Wilkinson, a former Marks & Spencer executive who now runs his own project management consultancy. “We had some particularly daunting meetings with our lawyer regarding the responsibilities of being a Trustee,” said Martin. “But we all felt an obligation to continue the work of previous volunteers who ran the pool for many years.” There have been some pretty incongruous moments of the sort that could only happen to volunteers with day jobs. Brian might be at the site of a car crash or policing a Hollywood film car chase, for instance, when he is called with a query about pool chemical levels. The pool is dependent on volunteers, from lifeguards to rota managers. Suna, Peter and Caroline feel they became scourges of the school run as they tried to recruit friends, acquaintances, or anyone who dared to glance at them. But in the end, they all feel the struggle was worthwhile. “An editor once told me: ‘what you’re doing is probably more valuable than any article any of us has written’, it really made me think,” says Suna. “And when lifeguarding one day, I saw an elderly lady delightedly take a baby in her arms to allow a young mother to swim a few lengths, I realized exactly why I was doing this.”

Matters Arising Wendover Parish Council Page

View from the Chair

Thanks to everyone who came along to our Annual Parish Meeting. The evening took the usual format – a review of the past year, a glimpse of what might be in the coming year and an array of stands from Wendover organisations including those which had received grants from WPC over the past year. Taking away the exhibitors and the Coffee Stop who provided refreshments throughout the evening we were left with attendance from ONE member of the public – yes ONE. My thanks especially go to Rosamund Green for organising the event – as she has done for the last five years. It’s disappointing to meet with such apathy. Maybe next year our APM should be electronic or transmitted by video – via Facebook – so that we can try to interact in more than one way. This leads me on to welcome our new member of staff, Chloe Gurney, who has been appointed as Assistant Clerk. I’m sure, she will bring a fresh injection of youth and enthusiasm to Wendover Parish Council.

Since I last wrote in this publication on violation of Parish property, we have sadly had further reports of damage to property in Hampden Meadow as well as acts of lunacy following the break for GCSE studies. It seems that there are some who feel they have a rite of passage to behave in an idiotic way. I’m sure there are those amongst us who know who these youngsters are. Your Parish Council – needs you!

Wendover is our community, our village, and our home. WPC plays a major part in making Wendover what it is. From parks and play equipment to allotments and the fishing pond, the iconic Clock Tower, the busy Manor Waste, it’s the Parish Council that implements improvements and manages regular maintenance. Most of Wendover’s Most Parish Councillors recently attended an streetlights are maintained by the Parish, as away day with the intention of formalising are the bus shelters, benches and litterbins, a workable Parish Plan. Wendover Celebrates and our Swimming Pool; to fight HS2 and to get a fair deal for Wendover in the Vale of Aylesbury Plan.

WPC is finding its workload increasing as Bucks CC devolves services that it supplies, to the Parish. This is likely to be an ongoing process with more local services, both social and infrastructure based, being devolved. WPC is an organization of thirteen volunteer councillors supported by four salaried staff. It is not a church based group; it is a basic level of local government. Councillors have varied backgrounds and bring expertise or just plain common sense to our monthly meetings. Being a councillor is hugely rewarding, as ideas discussed move into projects planned and then onward to completion. Your Parish Council needs to expand its skills set to meet new challenges. We currently have two vacancies to fill through co-option (no election is required). So if you have an interest in social enterprise, public service delivery or making Wendover a better place to live, get in touch with the Clock Tower. You’ll find that investing a few hours a week really helps your community and broadens your life experience. It can be quite fun too!
