End Polio Now

Saturday 8, 10am-12 noon To mark the fact that the eradication of polio worldwide is now in sight, Rotary is planting more purple crocus corms which will flower in late February or early March next year. This reflects the purple dye put on the finger of every recipient of the vaccine. Rotary in Wendover will extend the planting originally done in October 2010. If you would like to spend half an hour helping to plant 5000 corms, in Wendover or going to school in Tring but there is no equivalent evening return service. Please please go to www.wendoverrotary.org.uk. contact Arriva if this affects you, www. arrivabus.co.uk, telephone 0344 800 44 11. More bus news Further to the item in the September print edition of Wendover News, the Arriva bus service 55 was taken over by Redline on Monday 5 September so we can still reach Great Missenden, Amersham and Chesham by bus although the last buses are not as late as before.

October 1916

In France the attritional Battle of the Somme continued into its fourth month. Even at this stage some of the objectives set for the first day of the battle had not been taken. The Battle of Verdun also continued (now in its ninth month) and the French recaptured the strategically important Fort Douaumont. In Italy the eighth Battle of the Isonzo began with some limited Italian successes against the Austro-Hungarians. Germany resumed its U-boat attacks on Allied shipping. October was one of the few months of 1916 when no Wendover man was killed whilst on active service. The day-to-day Parish activities reflected a community doing its very best to carry on as normally as possible despite the horrific events of the war. Several local cases of careless lighting (Precautions against Air Raids) were heard at the Petty Sessions on 14 October and Charles Caudrey, “an aged defendant”, was summoned for failing to properly obscure the lights in his house in Wendover on 2 October. Caudrey pleaded not guilty, but P C Wareham stated that at 1.30am he saw a light in Caudrey’s upstairs window which had only a thin muslin curtain. P C Wareham roused Caudrey who responded: “I have got a dark blind, but it has fallen down”. Caudrey also said that he had a troublesome baby in the house and he had “lighted a candle to get it a drop of milk. It was a windy night and the dark blind which was put up temporarily fell down”. The Chairman of the Petty Sessions responded that he considered the occurrence a serious offence, but was willing to believe that it was an accident and would impose a fine of 5 shillings. Caudrey reacted: “I shall not pay. You may put me in gaol as long as you like but I shall not pay”.

Members of the Parish Council exchanged heated words through the medium of the Bucks Herald. On 7 October the paper printed a report from Cllr F W Blake complaining that only he and Mr Tarry had attended the October Council meeting. As there was not a quorum in attendance they were not able to deal with the business on the Agenda. Mr Blake said that he wished to protest on behalf of Mr Tarry and himself and also in the name of the electorate of Wendover at members of the Council showing such scant courtesy to their colleagues as not to attend. In a reply printed in the following week’s Bucks Herald, the Chairman of the Council expressed his extreme surprise and annoyance at the remarks passed by Mr Blake. He felt that the wisest course was to treat the remarks with the contempt that they deserved, but “as Chairman of the Council and in justice to my colleagues I feel bound to strongly protest. It is sincerely regretted by all those absent that there was not sufficient present to conduct the business of the meeting, but at the same time I nor the members referred to consider ourselves in the slightest degree responsible for our attendance, or otherwise, to either Mr Blake or Mr Tarry, neither do we for an instant recognise their right to criticise our actions”. Regular readers of the “Wendover Remembers” monthly articles will be well aware of the repeated vandalism reported during 1915 and 1916 of the relatively new Public Convenience in Back Street. In October 1916 this ill-fated Public Convenience was again in the news. “At the Petty Sessions Children’s Court Arthur Simmons and Harry Elliott were summoned for wilful damage of the public lavatory at Wendover on 29 September and pleaded not guilty. George Dancer, of Wendover, in the employ of

Wycombe Rural District Council, who have charge of the public lavatory in Back Street, stated that when he attended to it on 29 September the lock was alright. Reginald Fulgate witnessed the two defendants leave the lavatory and noticed that Elliott had a pair of pliers (produced) in his hand. He afterwards saw them in the sweet shop. PC Chivers stated that on examining the lavatory he found the automatic lock had been tampered with in such a way as to enable anyone to extract money from the slot. There was 1s 10d still in the lock chamber. He subsequently saw the two defendants. Simmons said he only had a penny. Elliott admitted having two pence and said that he intended going back for some more. He found the pair of pliers in Elliott’s possession.” The defendants were discharged with a severe Caution by the Chairman.

Addington Cottages

I live on Addington Cottages - there are about 28 houses down there that access the lane and the residents have been trying for many years to work with the council to get the road paved. A couple of residents took the lead to negotiate with all the residents, the council and contractors, and this summer we finally got it done. It is a main footpath on school routes too, so I’m sure the council were relieved! We held a street party on Sunday 27 August to celebrate and try and promote the road as a more useable, social space. Lots of residents brought food to BBQ to share and everyone, old and young, had a great time and got to know each other. We are now

planning a Christmas get together. Here is a picture from the day. Hannah Hook

Wendover History Life in the Police Station

It was with great interest that I read about the old police station in the July edition of Wendover News. Many years ago when I was very young, my first memories were of living at the police station. It’s true it was a large wooden shed. My father was a police sergeant, and we lived in the police house. I do remember there was an air raid shelter at the bottom of the garden, and the fire siren was located next to the police shed on four telegraph poles, and when it sounded, it was terrible for a small boy of three years old. We had the Paynes living next door behind Morby’s grocers, and I remember going once a week to watch the tv programme (on a 9 inch screen) “Roy Rogers and Trigger” with them at Mrs King’s house across the road. This was before many people had a tv. We then moved into the new police house by Lionel Avenue as the first occupants. This meant a longer walk to school, the old Wendover School by the Clocktower. Such memories. We lived in Wendover until the 1960s, and now I keep up with the news by tablet from the Cotswolds. Nick Murphy

The Fantham Family

The Fantham Clan have been in Wendover since the 1800’s, coming down on the canals from Birmingham, usually being Coal Merchants. They first settled at Buckland Wharf and then made their way into Wendover itself, taking up residence at The

Pack Horse Inn. I think the last Fantham resident was my great grandfather Joseph Fantham, who died in 1920. His wife (Ellen Fantham - Nee Ayres) died in 1909. We brought my mum a few years ago to see Pat who currently owns the Pack Horse. Mum had a fine day and felt quite at home. My grandfather (Harry Fantham) was one of 7 children, all born in Wendover. Harry lived at the Pack Horse Pub, which was run by his father and mother. He died in 1917 and is remembered on the War Memorial and in St Mary’s Churchyard in Wendover. More about Harry Fantham: Sapper 266804, 264th Railway Company Royal Engineers (also served as Private 5878 2nd/5th Battalion Suffolk Regiment). Son of Joseph and Ellen Fantham of London Road. Husband of Isabella Fantham of Aylesbury. Enlisted at Aylesbury in the autumn of 1916. Worked as a blacksmith. Nicknamed Hoboy. Uncle of William George Fantham. Died of wounds 30th August 1917 at Boulogne, aged 38. Harry’s final days: On Thursday 9 August the company continued work on a gun spur at Noordhofswijk in map square H 6 b. On the 10th work began on extension of the Great Midland line from C 25 a 4 7. Work continued on this until the 16th. On this day they were shelled suffering one killed and sixteen wounded. Two of the wounded men died the next day, but Harry hung on for two weeks. He is buried in Boulogne Eastern

Cemetery; Plot 7, Row I, Grave 22. He is also commemorated on the family grave in Wendover Churchyard. The Wendover Magazine of October 1917 included the following: Poor Harry received severe injuries whilst with a working party of the Royal Engineers in France, and lingered for some days in the 134th General Hospital, Boulogne, before expiring. His wife had several very kind letters from the Matron, but there was little hope of his recovery, though his death was painless. He was 38 years old, and leaves a young wife and two little children. He joined the army in October last year, and was at first attached to the Suffolk Regiment. He was a well known “Oddfellow”, and in civil life had worked for a considerable time as a farrier for Mr Tom Carter, and more recently at Mr J S Holland’s Brewery. Liam Cortinitas

and the value of my role and that of the RAF. That was one such time.”

RAF Halton’s Station Commander, Group Captain Adrian Burns, said farewell in August as his time at the helm came to an end. Before he left, Gp Capt Burns took the time to answer a few questions about his two years here: What have been the highlights for you personally? “I have met so many brilliant people during this tour and been privileged to meet everyone in local society; from the Duchess of Cornwall through to the most brilliant of charity volunteers in the community, that it is hard to say. My highlights vary but I am proud that immediately after the Paris Bombings I was able to attend the local Mosque as Stn Cdr so that we could show solidarity with our neighbours against such extremism. Most of my highlights have been when I have seen the brilliance in people or humanity

What, if any, advice would you pass to the new Station Commander? “Set your vision early and then lead with your heart and your head. Have faith in your people and ensure you get out of your office and mix with as many of them as often as possible – your tour will be over before you realise it and well before you want it to end.” Group Captain Burns hosted a barbeque in the Sergeants’ Mess on his departure where he was presented with his Pennant. The photo shows him accepting it from Station Warrant Officer, WO Jake Alpert. The Pennant is the one that has hung outside Station Headquarters while he has been here.

During our first week back we have thought very much about new opportunities – how these make us feel and how we can make the most of them. Matters Arising Wendover Parish Council Page

View from the Chair

It takes someone special to be able to cope with a dozen or more diverse, independent characters who comprise Wendover Parish Council. Ella, our Clerk, has now completed her six month probationary period and has come through it with great credit to herself. Ella is, of course, line manager to the rest of the staff and has taken on that role with dignity and determination. Chloe, our Assistant Clerk, is half way through her probationary period. She has jumped onto a steep learning curve but learns quickly and shows a keen interest in the work. Both Ella and Chloe are working towards professional qualifications. Jane, our newest member of staff, answers queries from the general public downstairs on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9-11.30am and is a most welcome and valued addition to our staff. Our new Office Team is certainly having an effect on the work of the Council and maintaining the unique flavour of Wendover. Alan Myers Chair of Staffing

Parish Council Meeting Monday 3 October 7.30pm Wendover Library Room

Manor Waste

The new seats around the War Memorial on the Manor Waste are being planted for winter by the company, Windowflowers,

a website. As there are two vacant places after the invitations were sent out to local organisations, the Parish Council can now consider individuals with an interest in joining the Steering Group, please contact the Clock Tower if you would like to be included.

Local Produce Market Manor Waste 9am to 1pm Saturday 15 October who also supply the High Street hanging baskets. They will be maintained all year round and replanted for next summer. Investigation is underway into installing new names plaques for the War Memorial and a pre-application for a grant has been submitted to The Memorial Trust. The process is a lengthy one so we will see the return of the old plaques for Remembrance Sunday this year. Although we now have new seating around the Memorial, people are sitting and children climbing on the Memorial itself. This has upset a number of people who have commented that they feel it is disrespectful. We would ask people to be aware that this is the case and use the new seating on the Manor Waste.

Fishing at Hampden Pond

The beginning of the fishing season at Hampden Pond is proving popular after the recent refurbishment work. Now the water level has dropped, AES Europe returned recently to remove the excess water lilies as the final part of this year’s maintenance work.

Neighbourhood Plan

The Parish Council have appointed four Wendover’s Neighbourhood Planning voluntary bailiffs to assist with day to day process is progressing with the formation management of the Pond and would like to of the Steering Group and construction of thank them for their support.
