“It’s Beginning to look a lot like ‘Christmas Shopping’ I hope you will find the time to hear the true sound of ChristChristmas” - in August!
If you have not started your ‘Christmas Shopping’ then you are behind the times! Research has shown that an increasing number of people begin to make preparations for Christmas toward the end of August! This year, more than four months before 25th December, Selfridges’ (London) became the first department store to launch its ‘Christmas Shop’. At least other retailers waited to display some of their ‘festive’ offerings until after the August Bank Holiday! Bah Humbug. Whilst I am not seeking to be an unreformed Ebenezer Scrooge, I am concerned that the true meaning of Christmas is being lost amidst unbridled consumerism. I understand that such early shopping might allow some families to spread the cost of Christmas by snapping up timely bargains. However, I am also concerned that other families might be pressurised by the “Ho Ho Ho” of retailers aggressively pushing their secular version of the season. Whenever you started your
Mass, that is, not the beep of a credit/debit card transaction, the “Ho Ho Ho” of Santa but rather the cry of the new-born Christ in the manger! Father Wayne Coughlin, RC PP
Future of RAF Halton Airfield
The Station Commander released the following statement about the future of RAF Halton airfield on Tuesday 8 November 2016: The Secretary of State for Defence has announced that, as a part of the wider rationalisation of the Defence estate, the RAF Halton airfield will be closed in 2022. The Defence Infrastructure Organisation and Aylesbury Vale District Council will work together to determine the future of the land in question. The decision by Defence to release RAF Halton’s airfield is unrelated to the on-going work to determine the future of the wider RAF Halton estate.

December 1916
After twenty-eight months of conflict, all the belligerents were suffering from warweariness. The great battles of the Somme and Verdun had come to an end with, between them, some 1.7 million casualties. And yet, there was no sign of the end of the war. In Britain, Lloyd George resigned from the Government frustrated by the slow progress of the war. Prime Minister Asquith then resigned and Lloyd George took over from him. Germany put forward a Peace This old postcard of Wendover shows the Clock Note, but refused to return the territories Tower at the bottom of the High Street but no it had occupied – particularly Belgium. The Bucks Herald reported that Tom Eldridge Britain also suffered from the bitterly cold had sent a letter to his father, Frank, saying weather. The hills around Wendover were covered in snow. Mr Molineux, the Head of Wendover School, recorded in the Log Book that there was an epidemic of influenza that struck both pupils and teachers. He was obliged to cancel the end of term examinations. At Weston Turville, children had attended school even though suffering from measles. The disease spread and the village was put out of bounds to the soldiers of Halton Camp. As Christmas approached, it was decided that all the Wendover men serving at the Front should receive a gift parcel. Collection boxes were placed in the shops, hotels and churches to raise the money. On the first Sunday in December £8.0.6 was collected at St Mary’s and 6s7d at the St Agnes Mission Church. Enough money was collected to buy gifts for all the local men. In early 1917 the Wendover Magazine published many letters of thanks.

The Wycombe Military Tribunal heard a plea from a 19 year old bricklayer, named Flitney, who was employed by Sir A H Lee MP, of Chequers Court. The young man said that he was the sole supporter of his widowed mother and had eight brothers in the forces. The Tribunal granted six months exemption in recognition of the sacrifices that Mrs Flitney had already made. Mike Senior & Val Moir See also page 10 for news about Mike Senior’s new book about WW1

Local News Victory on the Western Front
Wendover author Dr Michael Senior has had a life-long interest in the First World War and, since retirement, he has devoted much of his time to research, lecturing and writing about aspects of the Western Front. His research and his passion for this subject in particular has led him to write his latest book, “Victory on the Western Front”. Marshal Foch, the Generalissimo of the Allied Armies during the last stages of the First World War, commenting on the victories won during the Hundred Days when the Germans were driven back on the Western Front, said, ‘Never at any time in history has the British army achieved greater results in attack than in this unbroken offensive’. The scale, speed and success of this offensive have provided historians with fertile ground for interpretation and debate. Michael Senior shares his thoughts on the subject in this lucid and thought-provoking study. He also provides a challenging and controversial analysis of the underlying reasons for the success of the BEF. His new book is essential reading for anyone who is keen to learn about the extraordinary development of the British army throughout the war – and to understand why, and how, the Germans were beaten. Written by an experienced author and published during the centenary of the First World War, this book should have great appeal not only to seasoned military history enthusiasts but also to those who want to expand their knowledge of this pivotal time in our history.
Wedding bells for Wendover shop volunteer
An Aylesbury octogenarian and her 69-year-old toy boy are looking forward to their first Christmas together as a married couple – after more than four happy decades together. Rennie Grove Hospice Care volunteer, Sheila Rapley from Aylesbury, wed her partner of 44 years this summer. Andy and Sheila, 82, tied the knot at Quainton Railway Centre on 15 August, the same day as their youngest son’s 50th birthday. “It was a brilliant day,” recalls Sheila. “The venue, where Andy volunteers on the miniature railway, was perfect for all age groups; we had a barn dance and my 14-year-old grandson played guitar for us. It was so lovely to see everyone and even our family in Australia travelled over to be with us. My 18-year-old granddaughter was appearing in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival so we carried on the

Closure!
In 1981 Pat Card and Anne Brooman qualified as swimming teachers, then started lessons at Green Park, Aston Clinton to become known as Wendover Swimming Lessons. Many successful years followed teaching children to swim. In fact, actually teaching the children of children they had already taught! In 2004 Pat decided to retire from teaching and Sharon Maisey stepped in to become Anne’s new qualified swimming partner. Regretfully, after 35 years of Wendover Swimming Lessons, Anne and Sharon have decided due to new projects and circumstances to close their swimming lessons at Green Park this December 2016.

We asked the Committee to rule that the cost Hindle, a very experienced tunnel engineer saying and feasibility of a mined tunnel past Wendover that he could not understand why HS2’s estimates should be independently reviewed and the results of the cost of building a mined tunnel were so high presented to Parliament. We claimed that such and why they did not accord with those produced a Tunnel would be significantly cheaper than the by the Treasury’s model. time had elapsed, other Wendover petitioners were deferred to a later date. Our evidence amounted to a powerful case in favour of a short Wendover tunnel, such mitigation being what Wendover deserves, and at a lesser cost than the current proposals. Some people believed that the hearing was essentially similar to a sales pitch - do it well and you stand a better chance of closing the deal and getting what you want. was split over lunch time and immediately after lunch David Lidington came and did a summary on the impacts and issues for Wendover and gave good support for the mined tunnel proposal. His contribution was very helpful.
The Wendover story was started off by The Wendover Society. They faced a big challenge. The Select Committee had ruled they would not hear any proposals which required an Additional Provision (AP) – basically the need to reconsult on significant changes which could then be petitioned against. There was a strong suggestion from HS2 Ltd that a mined tunnel for Wendover would need an AP, but that seemed to be their response to most changes. The Society’s ask was for a proper review of the mined tunnel option. They were heard and their witnesses on tunnelling costs, noise and property blight all managed to convey both the tunnelling cost aspects and some of the impacts on Wendover.
We are now awaiting a response, however there is the remote possibility of a tunnel for Wendover. I believe this is ultimately in the hands of the politicians. Let’s hope they see sense.
In the meantime the project is pressing, spending money as it goes. The objective is to get Royal Assent for the Phase 1 Hybrid Bill by Christmas. It appears to have momentum, at least with politicians even if not with members of the public. A recent survey by ITV of 2000 people showed: • Less than 20% of people thought they would use it • 23% not aware that HS2 is being planned • 58% don’t think it’s a price worth paying • 77% of people would prefer that the money was spent in other areas, like the NHS • Nearly three-quarters of people thought HS2 The Parish Council presentation with the help would lead to price rises for train tickets of legal representation focused on community concerns and impacts. A sculpture for Wendover? There was a brief article on the front page of the November 2016 print edition of Wendover News referring to a proposal for a sculpture for Wendover. Wendover Parish Council has received a proposal from a professional sculptor who is a Wendover resident and is seeking public opinion on how to proceed. Wendover Parish Council is not proposing to fund the project. Funding is a separate issue. The information has been disseminated through social media and a questionnaire is available at Wendover Clock Tower or from the Parish Council website: http:// www.wendover-pc.gov.uk/wp-content/ uploads/Public-Consultation-QuestonnaireSculpture-Hampden-Pond-1.pdf. Members of the public may have completed the survey during one of the Manor Waste markets as Council employees have been out and about with forms. Please remember to complete the form before Saturday 31 December on which date the public consultation closes.

The proposed site for the sculpture is on this island in Hampden Pond, near St Mary’s Church. Photo: Ron Adams, October 2016
The subject of the sculpture is Herne the Hunter, whose story dates from the times of King Richard II. A mythical, antlered man, measuring approx 7 ft in height, is portrayed as a woodland deity. A plaque on the nearby Ridgeway National Trail route could explain all.

Whilst appreciating Belinda Brackley’s careful research into planning legalities and conservation issues, and sensing her massive frustration at the resurfacing of the Manor Waste, I do not agree with her opinions that: a. ‘the pavers are not acceptable’ b. ‘people used totally inappropriate materials’ c. ‘Parish and District Councillors need to address urgently, how this scheme can be rectified’ d. ‘we have been badly let down’ e. ‘it is simply not good enough’ I do not argue with her legal points, however, I wish to emphasise that, as someone who uses a walking stick and is somewhat wobbly on my feet, I consider the new surface to be very acceptable. It is even, non-slippery and well drained. The old surface was a bit of an eye-sore and dangerous. I give thanks every time it rains that I do not have to risk turning my ankle or catching my stick on slippery, wet cobbles or tripping on cracked, uneven paving slabs. My elderly mobility scooter user friends enjoy an easier ride and better access to shops, as do those with shopping trolleys, babies in buggies and mums with toddlers. It is so much easier to manoeuvre round the market stalls too. The new seating arrangements are a life saver to those of us who need a moment to draw breath as we stagger up the hill and the planting is pleasant and very acceptable as we sit and remember by the war memorial. I have also heard visitors commenting on how well it all looks now. Far from being badly let down, I am thrilled that our Parish and District Councillors had

Hugh enjoyed being part of the Wendover community, was frequently seen in the village walking his large Golden Retriever to the woods or onto Coombe Hill or visiting the Cheeseman at the Market and quite often he would be surrounded by small grandchildren on visits to enjoy the wonders of the large Vicarage and its garden. Hugh retired to Deddington in April 2001. Here he continued with his involvement in (National Lottery) Charities Funding enjoying visiting Youth Clubs to present their cheques as well as his Church Linens Project and picked up on his interest in writing by joining the Writers Group and organising countrywide competitions for adults and young people in conjunction with the Deddington Festival. He was governor and then Chair of the Primary School and set up Fair Trade in the village. He joined the Drama Group – taking to the stage in the annual Pantomime - and singing with impromptu choirs to celebrate significant events. Hugh died peacefully on 5th October 2016. Matters Arising Wendover Parish Council Page
View from the Chair
On Wednesday 2 November the joint petition of Wendover Parish Council and Halton Parish Council was presented to the House of Lords Select Committee. This was in tandem with the petition submitted by the Wendover Society. A great deal of energy and effort went into the preparation of the presentation and we were all grateful for the work undertaken by Alistair and Emyr from the firm of Parliamentary agents who acted for the two organisations. The biggest challenge was to provide a unified presentation and this was certainly achieved in part by members of the community from different backgrounds coming together to try and gain better mitigation for Wendover. There are still organisations and individuals from Wendover who have yet to present to the Select Committee – including Lord Stevenson who has supported us throughout. Special thanks goes to David Lidington who was the anchor to the presentation. We now wait for news of, hopefully, further consideration by the Select Committee of mitigation ideas submitted. Robert Duggan, chairman
Hampden Pond Sculpture
By now you are probably aware we have been made a generous offer by a local sculptor, Marie Boyle, of a Limited Edition cold cast sculpture, ‘Herne’ for the small island at Hampden Pond. (See the article on page
24). We have been consulting publicly about the proposal asking people to complete a questionnaire which can be collected from the Clock Tower or downloaded from our website. There is a display in the Clock Tower window. We need your opinion before the end of December. Legend says Herne was King Richard II’s favourite huntsman and that while hunting one day a stag charged at the King. Herne threw himself in its path and was mortally injured. As he lay dying a passing Sage told Herne’s fellow huntsman to remove the antlers from the stag and place them on Herne’s head. The huntsman recovered but the Sage took Herne’s hunting abilities in payment for saving his life. Herne never hunted again and the King dismissed him, but his ghost can be seen on horseback with hounds near an old Oak tree in Windsor.

Highways Issues
Please report any highways problems you encounter, pot holes, poor surface, lack of white lines, etc., to Transport for Bucks https://www.buckscc.gov.uk/about-yourcouncil/do-it-online/report-it/ or 01296 382416. Please also send a copy to us as a record is being kept at the Clock Tower to enable us to chase TfB to help get the problems dealt with as quickly as possible.
Parking
In an effort to find more parking spaces we are working with AVDC to have the Library Car Park spaces re-drawn. The new layout will create 9 more bays. A meeting with BCC is also being arranged to discuss problem areas and possible solutions for increasing on-street parking.

Lighting Faults
We are still having problems with street lighting and the time being taken to repair power faults. Streetlights on the High Street, Aylesbury Road and Tring Road belong to TfB and lights on PMG are still the responsibility of the developer. All other lights in the Parish belong to the Parish Council. Please report the column number to the Clock Tower, it can be found on the column itself. On Thursdays, reports are sent to Sparkx, our contractor, and investigated on Fridays. Sparkx in turn report to UKPN the following week who then have 25 working days to fix the fault. We apologise for any inconvenience Wendover’s Christmas Tree, sponsored by caused by the current Harpenden Building delays. Society
