The Bucks Herald of 8 August 1914 reported that “so far as this district is concerned there is a dearth of topics for comment this week”. Just one week later, the same newspaper noted that over 30 men from Wendover had joined the army; that the Vicar, the Rev C C Sharpe, was conducting daily Intercessions for those at the Front; and that a large number of ladies were “considering what can be done on behalf of the sick and the wounded”. The war had arrived in Wendover.

If we are successful in our proposal, Chiltern Ridgeway School will be a small, inclusive, all ability secondary school. The focus will be on the pupil as an individual and on giving the students the life skills they need to flourish. We strongly believe that by introducing class sizes of 20 we can enable teachers to focus on the needs of every member of a class. By providing an extended school day we can encourage pupils to have more engagement with their education and support the development of their life skills. Our intention is to provide a school where children are excited by and enjoy what they are doing. There is a need to prepare our area to meet the growing demand for secondary school places and we are at the beginning of a process of making Chiltern Ridgeway School a reality. Calibre, which provides audio books for people unable to read print, came to Wendover in 1976, then to the Tindal Hospital, Aylesbury in 1980 before moving to its current location in Weston Turville in 1997. In the early days just one sack of books a day was sent out; now 1,800 books are despatched to tens of thousands of members nationwide. Crime writer and Calibre patron, Simon Brett, who has recently won the prestigious Crime Writers’ Association Diamond Dagger award, gave the keynote speech at a special party. James McCudden Heritage Flight Centre
On the morning of Thursday 26 June 2014, at RAF Halton, something rather special happened: a new section of the Trenchard Museum at RAF Halton was opened - the James McCudden Heritage Flight Centre. This centre is designed to inspire young people of all ages to become interested in the technical aspects of flight. Group visits typically feature schools, Air Training Cadets, RAF recruits and U3A group. Contact details: 01296 656841. James Thomas Byford McCudden, VC, DSO and Bar, MC and Bar, MM, CdeG is reputedly “The most highly decorated pilot of the Great War”. He joined the Royal Flying Corps in 1913 and came to Halton as a mechanic supporting 3 Squadron aircraft during the army manoeuvres in September that year. He went to France with the squadron on the outbreak of war and rose rapidly to Sergeant in charge of engines while seeing combat as an observer and gunner before returning to England for pilot training in 1916. Francis Hanford, curator of the Trenchard Museum at RAF Halton since 1998, was determined to open a centre to inspire the
youngsters of today to take up aero engineering. He chose James McCudden as the ideal icon being both an extremely competent mechanic and an ace fighter pilot. The centre was opened after 15 short months with the full support of Tom Costello, apprentice 1948-51, who raised £26,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund, RAF Charitable Trust and Rolls Royce plc.

The paintings hung around the walls were printed from original watercolours by Phil Stephenson, an apprentice training at RAF Halton in the late 1930s. One of his paintings (not exhibited) shows RAF Halton on 3 September 1945—the day that war was declared. A display about Frank Whittle, RAF apprentice, explains his story as the inventor of the jet engine. The RAF Charitable Trust funded a flight simulator based on the Chipmunk flying around RAF Halton for visitors to experience. Brian Ellis, an ex-Halton instructor who is chief engineer of the Trenchard Museum, continues to develop educational aids to demonstrate factors affecting flight. His principle projects at the moment are the development of the wind tunnel and the building of a replica aircraft.

Aylesbury raises flag for Armed Forces Day RAF Halton personnel have supported two Armed Forces Day flag raising events in Aylesbury and Hemel Hempstead. Dignitaries and local people turned out for the short ceremony and in Aylesbury, Chairman of Buckinghamshire County Council, Councillor Zafir Mohammed, said: “On behalf of Buckinghamshire County Council I would like to say how proud we are to raise the flag today to commemorate and give thanks to our Armed Forces Family, many of whom are currently serving on operations. Our thoughts are with them and their families as the whole nation joins together this week to pay tribute to them. This year is more important with the anniversary of the start of World War One where so many gave their lives for us.” Buckinghamshire’s Lord Lieutenant, Sir Henry Aubrey-Fletcher, who took the salute, said: “This is more than a simple flag-raising. Great Missenden honours Armed Forces The Parish Church of St Peter & St Paul was packed on Saturday 28 June for a rousing commemorative Proms Concert. The concert, organised by Musical Director Fiona Firth of Singers4all (www.singers4all.com ), was the centrepiece of a weekend of Great Missenden events held to celebrate Armed Forces Day. Fiona’s own choirs were joined by pupils from the Misbourne School Harmony Choir and the Great Missenden CofE Combined School singers for some stirring WW1 and WW2 medleys. The Wick Trimmers, local popular folk band, provided some stirring tributes with “100 Years” and the audience, which included armed services veterans, needed no encouragement, joining in for rousing renditions of “It’s a long way to Tipperary”, “Pack up your troubles”, “My old man said follow the van” and, loudest of all, with flags waving, “Jerusalem". Fiona said, “So many people put so much effort into this concert that it was wonderful to see such a massive audience in the church. I was very moved by all the lovely comments we received. It was great

to be able to make our own contribution to the country’s week long events to honour our fantastic armed forces.” To add to the magic and music of the night, Ian Lynch, professional trumpeter accompanied Martin Robson, the wellknown Bass singer in a heartening performance of “The Trumpeter” by J Airlie Dix. He also played the haunting melody of “The Last Post” from the back of the church. Two local theatre and TV actors, David Riccardo-Pearce and Marianne Oldham, read pieces from Noel Coward, Wilfred Owen, Rupert Brook and Robert W. Service. Photos of loved ones who had served in the armed forces were projected on a big screen, bringing back poignant memories for many of the singers and congregation. A moving tribute to end a wonderful evening's entertainment.
Paying too much for your water? Further to Rachel Garver’s letter in the April edition of Wendover News, Parish Councillor and Wendover Society Member Tom Walsh noticed a charge on his water bill from Thames Water for Surface Water Drainage. He was aware that no water from his property ended up in a Thames Water Sewer. He raised this issue with

that a whole village was affected by the changes of 2001.
Tom told TWS Chairman Mike Beard about this. Mike, who lives in Walnut Drive, called Thames Water who sent him a simple application form. Within about a week Mike had a letter from Thames Water to say that his claim was successful and his next bill would be reduced. It seems that few houses in Wendover are discharging surface water into Thames Water sewers. For example it might be that all the new properties at PMG are overpaying. Checking your own position is very simple. Just call Thames Water on 0845 641 0086 and ask for a claims form.
As a result, Thames Water have agreed to pay back six years overpayments to everybody in the village, where applicable. They claim this will take quite a while to achieve but I hoped you could let your readers know that they can expect a rebate of up to £128 (2008-2013) as well as the payment of £25 being deducted from this year’s bill. The Water Consumers Council also assure me that they will ensure that Thames Water carry out this action. Some of us contacted Thames Water to apply for rebates and were unhappy to learn that they were not going to backdate any of our claims. Support Project Extended SCSN is delighted to announce that following the success of the Service and Veteran Children Support Project in Buckinghamshire the provision is now being extended to other counties.

Mid Bucks Beekeepers Association We will be running a stand promoting Beekeeping in the Home and Garden marquee at the Bucks Show on 28 August. July with it’s warm weather was an excellent beekeeping month with good forage for the bees, many of our members are reporting increased honey harvests compared to recent years. Wendover Cricket Club Juniors As the end of the junior cricket season approaches, the juniors section of the Wendover Cricket Club celebrated with their annual presentation day on 12 June. It was a chance for the age groups to come together and share their experiences over the past few months. The morning began with the younger players taking part in a team event involving a number of cricket related activities. The winning team not only gained the accolade of winners, but also got a box of chocolates each, yum! During this time parents were able to enjoy the sunshine with a nice cup of tea and a chat with friends. Following on from the games, the presentation began with kind words from the club’s vice-
chairman Nick Morley. The club likes to acknowledge the participation of all of our junior members. Every child received a medal for their involvement this season, including our youngest members in the U7s, after all, they are the future of the club! All other age groups play competitive cricket and therefore a number of different awards in acknowledgement of consistent performance throughout the season were presented. Each of the age group managers highlighted the team’s overall performance and then announced individual winners who received their awards from the club’s vice-chairman. Canal Towpath We are regular visitors to Wendover, the Antique Fair, the Market, and the excellent Library. While in Wendover we often take the chance to stroll along the Canal towpath, the path has become flooded in a couple of places, and is difficult to use. There seems to be much plant growth in the canal, not sure who is responsible for keeping the canal flowing, but it seems something needs to be done. D. Many Wendover residents have asked me about the House of Commons Select Committee which has now begun its detailed consideration of the Bill to authorise the construction of HS2. Probably the easiest way to describe how the Committee functions is to think of a panel of MPs acting in place of a Planning Inspector in a public inquiry that covers a development proposal spread across many different local council areas. There are six MPs on the panel. All are backbench MPs though some have served as Ministers in the past. They must be people whose constituencies are unaffected by HS2 and of course they must not have any personal financial interest in the project. Their task is to work their way through the nearly 2,000 petitions that have been sent in seeking amendments to the Bill. The Committee hears from the petitioners and from any witnesses whom the petitioners call to give evidence, and from the lawyers acting for HS2 Ltd. All the Committee members are MPs who are used in their constituency work to dealing with people of all types. They will expect people giving evidence to have prepared their arguments and to be courteous and even tempered, but they won’t, any more than in their own constituency surgeries, expect everyone to be brimming with selfconfidence and comfortable with public speaking. So there is no need to feel intimidated by the process.

Wendover Junior School OFSTED Following an OFSTED inspection held on 24—25 June, Wendover Church of England Junior School has been judged to “Require Improvement”. Whilst we are obviously disappointed with this judgement, we are reassured that the inspectors recognised that the school has already begun its journey to improvement. Critically, the inspectors agreed that the school leaders and governors “have identified the key areas for improvement and promptly taken action to address these” and that ”current assessment information and work in pupils’ books show progress is speeding up and many pupils have achieved well since the start of the year”. In the week the report was published we received the 2014 SATs results. We were delighted that the results were the best the school has achieved for over three years and showed that pupils are now making rapid progress, particularly in mathematics. show that this year there has been a 17% increase in pupils getting a Level 4+, a 12% increase in those getting Level 5+ and a 15% increase in those achieving Level 6. Jenny Bartlett, Acting Head, said, “Although we were disappointed with the overall judgement, the inspectors’ positive comments and this year’s excellent SATs results confirm that this is now a rapidly improving school.” The inspectors judged that the school’s existing action plan is the right one for the school to return to being judged Good or better before its next inspection, which will be in approximately 18 months’ time.

Chemistry at Work at John Colet On Friday 4 July the science department ran a “Chemistry at Work” day. This involved nine external speakers talking to groups of year 9 students about how they use chemistry in the workplace. During the morning session, the speakers explained the importance of chemistry in different industries. The scheme, called Chemistry in Action, is run by Derek Jones of the Royal Society of Chemistry. Year 9 student Luke Webb said: “We learnt all sorts of useful facts and information, varying from police fingerprints to worms’ lifestyles. I found the ‘fight or flight’ talk the most interesting and relevant as it linked in with some of my favourite lessons such as PE. All the talks and demonstrations were informative as well as enjoyable.”

Local Face: Francis Hanford
Francis Hanford came to Wendover in 1996. On retiring from the RAF he had found a job as a civilian instructor at Halton and settled into his 26th home with his wife Margaret. She soon found a job in a local nursing home and voluntary activities with the Friends of the Health Centre and the Hospice Shop. He settled into his new job and lifestyle and tried to bring house and garden to order. As he assimilated into his new occupation he became aware of a small museum in two rooms in the Old Workshops which had been started and sponsored by the Halton Apprentice Association. He started to help the curator, who worked in his department, and then found himself in charge when his friend was promoted and posted away. It became his baby and the sponsors, without telling him, negotiated its removal to a much larger building. Filling the new space was a challenge, eventually solved by borrowing a 1943 glider and placing it so that it took up as much space as possible. Thus Viscount Trenchard, the grandson of the man who laid the foundations of the present RAF, was able to open the Trenchard Museum on 26 June 1999. At his point there were very few visitors and this was just as well as Margaret had been diagnosed as having cancer and was to die a year later. Facing life alone, Francis was very fortunate in having an interesting job and the museum to occupy his leisure. There was much to be done.
Finding new exhibits lead to the need to reorganise the displays with new labels and a search for supplementary items or spares to bring the scenario to life. Mannequins were needed to show off uniforms and the art of dressing them had to be learned. Friends were persuaded to make models of significant aircraft and items in dark corners were relocated, usually with their owner’s consent. The museum began to be more credible. The year 2002 was notable for three things: he was persuaded to join the Halton Singers, he recruited Brian Ellis to join him as his chief engineer and he discovered that a significant historical landmark was approaching. He could not and cannot sing but the singers’ rehearsals added interest and introduced him to Jean who was to become his wife. With Brian he could tackle more challenging projects and learn more about the engineering that had been fundamental to RAF Halton’s history. Also, Brian had friends in the engineering world. Meanwhile, having learned that 1913 was when the first aircraft landed at Halton, he was able to research and plan for a 90th anniversary commemoration which would bring much needed publicity. The event happened and though it was not quite the success hoped for it brought more visitors including many of the parents of recruits attending graduation parades.

Remarried in 2005 with a busy job and museum to run, there was still time to take part in Gilbert and Sullivan and other shows twice a year. Also, with Jean’s company the pleasures of the London theatres and exhibitions gave added spice to life. With retirement approaching the museum did receive a lot of attention and, with the help of Brian’s contacts; they managed to get hold of their premier exhibit, the Folland Gnat aircraft. This became the collection’s centre-piece and it enhanced its whole atmosphere enormously, attracting enormous interest from all age groups. There have been many special acquisitions since but none as welcome and significant. With the museum’s growth has come a steady increase in the team of volunteers who help to develop and run it. They have brought fresh expertise and enthusiasm to the whole project. The collection and visitor numbers grow steadily and recently we have been able to branch out into the teaching of the principals of flight and the fostering of “air mindedness” by building up and opening of the James McCudden Flight Heritage Centre in a separate building. We were delighted to have Viscount Trenchard return, 15 years to the day after the first opening, to perform the ceremony. Will Francis rest now? Probably not.

View from the Chair Every two years I hold a charity Ball/Event to raise funds for two charities close to my heart. This year a Cocktails and Casino event was held at the Village Gate. Over £3k was raised which will benefit Rennie Grove Hospice Care and Prostate Cancer UK. Thanks to Mark and his staff at the Village Gate, my two special guests, Suzy Bookbinder and Bill Giles who did a sterling job encouraging folks to buy raffle tickets, and to Mr Kites Benefit band who contributed to an excellent evening free of charge. Thanks also to the event committee who worked hard over the last six months organising the event. Most of all my special thanks to all those who turned up on the night and had a good evening to boot. To stand on the Manor Waste and watch some users struggle to cope with the areas of increasing unevenness, particularly those villagers that depend on walking frames and trolleys to assist with their balance, clearly points to a need to do something soon.
David Haywood has lived here for nearly 25 years with his wife and son and been actively involved in the life of the Village. This has included support for the PTA at all three local Schools, Wendover Junior Football Club, support for swimming and Life-saving badges at Wendover Pool, Beavers, Cubs and Scout camps. He was CEO of the International Electronic Publishing Research Centre and latterly Dean at the University of the Arts in London. Now retired, his involvement in local organisations has continued, he is a Committee Member of Wendover HS2 and the Chiltern Humanists. He has a great interest in music related activities and is seeking to give increased support to the Wendover community.
Our New Councillors Andrew Morrison has lived in Wendover for 17 years with his wife and two children. He regularly enjoys the local pubs and restaurants with friends and family and shops locally. As a regular cyclist, he is keen to expand on the work done so far in building cycle paths and promoting the environmental and health benefits of cycling. He is also interested in promoting the canal area with Wendover Arm Trust. He is a Sales Director for a Vehicle Security Company based in Cranfield, Bedfordshire (part of The Danaher Corporation) and has always worked in the automotive industry. Having lived in Wendover since 1997, in four locations, he feels he has a good understanding of the issues and concerns faced by the residents of the village such

The Manor Waste Survey Outcome The Parish Council would like to thank all of you who took part in our survey about the future of the Manor Waste. 90% of the 254 responders use the Manor Waste on a daily or weekly basis. Confirming that the area is very important to village life. A significant number of people gave the opinion that the Manor Waste was currently in good condition. Unfortunately, with around 300 broken paving slabs and an increase in trip hazards and trip incidents
The survey results indicate that people do like the Manor Waste much as it is. Buff paving with a contrasting grey replacement for the cobbles was the popular choice. The general feeling being that traditional features were valued but that modern additions were OK if they added something to the areas usefulness. More seating, a community notice board, increased litter bins and more bike racks, while not always unopposed, have sufficient following to be worth considering in the revised design. In addition to survey ideas the Parish Council is also considering providing a safe electrical supply for market traders and event organisers. This should reduce the need for the noisy generators that are currently used. A water point to help with cleaning up, better bollards that resist impact and a speed hump across the entrance to Budgens car park are also likely to feature in the new design. Our project managers will now take the survey results and the Parish Council’s ideas and come up with a finished design. You’ve told us that it should look much like the current Manor Waste. It will be safer, stronger and we hope it will serve the village for another 40yrs.
