Wendover Remembers

AUGUST 1917

August 1917 was the first complete month of the Paschendaele Offensive. The weather was terrible with continuous rain and the mud became a major problem. By mid-August the attack had advanced half a mile and, at great cost, the Steenbeek river was crossed and Langemarck was taken. Further south on the Western Front, the French attacked in the Verdun area and regained all the ground lost during the German campaign of February 1916. The Eleventh Battle of the Isonzo River began in Italy. China entered the war on the Allies’ side. August 1917 was a sad month for Wendover. Five local men were killed on the Western Front. They were Arthur Bonham, Harry Fantham, Benjamin Parkins, Arthur Parsons and Alfred Taylor. Private Arthur Bonham of the Ox and Bucks died on 27 August 1917. Dementia Friendly Creating a dementia-friendly generation raising and made a

Wendover CofE Junior School (WCEJS) has embraced this challenge. In 2016 children from Year 3 (90 children) took part in a project spending time with residents in a specialist home. They sang songs, read poems and spent time with the residents visiting their bedrooms and exploring their way of life. Both young and old had memorable experiences.

This has been another very busy and successful year for WCEJS. It is fitting to reflect on the targets that we were given by Ofsted last July: to make sure that the new assessment system is used effectively by everyone and to improve the standard of children’s writing. I am very pleased to say that we have made good progress in both areas, with writing being at a higher standard now than ever before – this was shown by our significant improvement in the Year 6 SATs. Overall, children are attaining higher and progressing more than ever in reading, writing, maths and science.

Preschool Poppies recently visited Tiggywinkles Wildlife Hospital in Haddenham. The staff and children thoroughly enjoyed the day, getting up close to the hedgehogs and many other rescued animals. The staff at Tiggywinkles were very accommodating and made the day educational as well as memorable for all involved. Following the trip, the children were inspired to help our British wildlife, and they decided that building a hedgehog house and bird box was a good idea. Woodwork sessions were planned and the children were involved with planning their design, and selecting the materials they would need. A statement from Wendover Parish Council and WNP Steering Group(SG) was prepared with the help of the planning consultant engaged and presented at the Public Inquiry into whether development should be permitted at the Halton Lane Field site. Members of the SG also attended. The points of objection were:-

• Significant adverse impact on the landscape character (GP35 & RA2) • Harmful effects on the visual amenity of the area. • Substantial adverse impacts on the adjoining Weston Turville SSSI. • Significant intrusion into open countryside and loss of a Greenfield site. • A detrimental impact on the appearance of the rural area because it would result in coalescence between Weston Turville and World’s End. • Detrimental impacts on local infrastructure adding to the problems of for example - already oversubscribed schools, pressures on the local GP and dental services, lack of sufficent public transport links and increased congestion on the rural roads.

In addition we stressed the fact that there was a 5 year supply of housing land available and that the closure of Halton Camp meant all planning applications had to be looked at in the light of this development. We also stressed the overwhelming view of those consulted so far, which was that they wished to keep the existing green belt and green spaces around

Coping with the Care Fee Crisis

More than 400,000 people are in residential care and nursing homes in the UK. The number of people aged 85 and over is projected to more than double by 2039, and a surge in demand for places over the next two decades is expected as a result. With the cost burden of social care constantly increasing, recent government proposals suggest that continued attempts to raid the population’s personal coffers are a distinct probability. However, none of this need concern you if you take action to future-proof your assets against political interference, with the help of a Lifetime Trust. The concept of Trusts can be traced back to a time when knights joining the Crusades would ask a trusted neighbouring landowner to protect their castle and lands until their return. Today, they are a part of everyday life – for example, your pension is a Trust, as are charities and many hospitals and schools.

For at least two years we have been suffering the terrible noise and excessive speed of motorcycles along the strip of the A413 where we live (40mph) at weekends and it is unacceptable on many levels. I have watched motorcycles doing ‘wheelies along the main road’ even when the police were present at the local service station for a burglary investigation. I tried for 18 months to enlist BCC councillors help in the erection of a visible speed device so that we may produce photos of the offenders and their speed, what a waste of time that was. I contacted the police about 10/14 days ago to seek a meeting with our local officers about the problem, I was given an incident number but have heard nothing since. The whole thing wants one to do what the French would, dare I say it, ‘Action direct’. Apart from the excessive speeds I was under the impression that there were legal noise levels for motor vehicles, not along this road. A conversation with a Gt Missenden resident confirmed that the noise and speed do not end at the Firecrest!!!!

Driving Complaint

Further to Mr McRay’s letter in the July issue, I wish to raise a general concern at the ignorance of some drivers using the roads in and around Wendover, not just motorcyclists. A significant number of drivers/riders appear to be oblivious to the speed limit in built up areas. This has been regularly witnessed by myself, particularly on Dobbins Lane and Aylesbury Road, roads that have a usage by children travelling to and from the schools, whether from within Wendover or the railway station. Having seen the Aylesbury Road camera removed some years ago, is it not about time the issue of traffic calming and speed enforcement were revisited? Mr D Tucker, Wendover

Another successful Young Flyers event took place at the Airfield at RAF Halton in June, with children from the surrounding area being given 20 minutes of air experience flights with a view to encouraging their interest in aviation as a career.

Local Faces: Colet Head Students The Head Students at John Colet School were only appointed on Friday 23 June but the team got down to work immediately. They realised that communication is the key to leadership so they rearranged the Sixth Form noticeboard and also tidied the Common Room. These new leaders are very keen, indeed. They really want to encourage the involvement of the whole Sixth Form so they have restructured the Sixth Form Council with many new roles and set up an email address, essential in this day and age. They are aware that many Sixth Formers are not keen on participating in conventional sports so they want to set up fun informal competitions to keep them physically active.

Local Charities need You! UK Astronomy - Tesco Bags of Help UK Astronomy started as one man in a field UK Astronomy is bidding to bag a massive cash with a passion to teach others. After getting boost from the Tesco Bags of Help initiative. his first scope, Ross created UK Astronomy on Facebook with just 30 of his friends. Now only Tesco teamed up with Groundwork to launch 2 years later they have over 2200 members, its community funding scheme, which sees teach schools, local interest groups, run grants of £4,000, £2,000 and £1,000 – all events - ranging from guest speakers to kids raised from the 5p bag levy – being awarded clubs - attend any community events they can and are now a charity! to local community projects. Three groups in every Tesco region have been shortlisted to receive the cash award and shoppers are being invited to head along to Tesco stores to vote for who they think should take away the top grant. UK Astronomy is one of the groups on the shortlist. www.wendovernews.co.uk

Connection Support needs Volunteers

Connection Support provides specialist support services to a range of people facing complex life challenges. One of the projects is supporting and encouraging older people who reside in Independent Living Accommodation to access services, become involved in community activities that promote health, wellbeing, learning, fun and independence. View from the Chair

In July I attended a meeting of the Local Area Forum. The ‘LAF’ is a chance for parishes, the public, council officers and district and county councillors to discuss community priorities for services in the area. Often it’s a business-like but rather dull affair. Not this time though. The Dementia Action Alliance showed a video of Wendover viewed through the eyes of people with dementia. It’s a compelling piece of work which I hope gets a wide audience and can be viewed on Wendover News website. It shows that the broader community of Wendover are well on their way to being a caring place that supports people that need us. I was very proud of Wendover and I think other communities who watched were moved to emulate Wendover’s initiative. Tom Walsh, Chairman

At last, many thanks to TfB, the upheaval of resurfacing works are now a thing of the past and the road and roundabout are smooth with traffic noise reduced. It took much nudging from WPC but it’s been worth it.

It has been noted that the Clock Tower clock has been a little fast. The specialists have been in to check and adjust the mechanism, but they tell us some of the problems might be heat related. Metal expands in hot weather and clock accuracy suffers as a result.

Mindless behaviour

We have had even more broken glass and beer cans in the parks in the last few weeks. Roads are shared spaces

Motorists are undoubtably at the apex of road users but this premier position brings with it real responsibilities. There have been several incidents reported lately where horse riders and cyclists have been lucky to avoid serious injury. It’s the usual story of fast cars and slow riders, often on a bend, not sharing space with consideration. WPC asks that motorists take responsibility and think about what’s around the next corner and share our roads with care.
