About Me I was an overweight, over worked, over stressed busy executive, working 16 hour days while enduring the London commute. Health and fitness was not something I managed to fit into my life well. I started exercising, but could never comfortably fit it into my day and balance the nutrition side to help me lose the weight I needed to. Yo-yo dieting became a constant theme in my life as I flitted in and out of exercise and diets. When my little boy came along, this got harder, and I just never found the right balance. I decided to become a personal trainer to help others balance their life to fit in exercise with a balanced, healthy diet. As a qualified personal trainer, nutritional advisor and life coach, I am able to help all those starting, improving or maintaining their fitness journey. If you have a fitness goal, I will help you achieve it. About Me

AUGUST 1917

August 1917 was the first complete month of the Paschendaele Offensive. The weather was terrible with continuous rain and the mud became a major problem. By mid-August the attack had advanced half a mile and, at great cost, the Steenbeek river was crossed and Langemarck was taken. Further south on the Western Front, the French attacked in the Verdun area and regained all the ground lost during the German campaign of February 1916. The Eleventh Battle of the Isonzo River began in Italy. China entered the war on the Allies’ side. August 1917 was a sad month for Wendover. Five local men were killed on the Western Front. They were Arthur Bonham, Harry Fantham, Benjamin Parkins, Arthur Parsons and Alfred Taylor. Private Arthur Bonham of the Ox and Bucks died on 27 August 1917. In August 1915 the Wendover Magazine had printed extracts of an interesting letter sent home by Arthur. He wrote “We have not been in the trenches for about a fortnight now, but up till then we had four days in and four days out. At present we are billeted at a large village some miles behind the firing line. The woods and country back here are looking grand, but as you get nearer the firing line the villages and towns are battered about dreadfully, and at some of them there are churches in ruins which at one time must have looked splendid and quite beautiful.” In August 1916 his mother, Mrs Bonham of Addington Cottages received news that Arthur had been wounded in the leg and was in hospital. By November [1916]

‘There is a nice little nest of Wendover lads somewhere in France. A Abrams, Cecil Dell, Will Elliott, S Wood and A Parsons having gone out with the Bucks Battalion.’ In August he was home convalescing, but soon 1916 Arthur was back from France but in hospital at Torquay suffering from 5 shrapnel returned to the front. wounds. Just a year later he was killed. Private Harry Fantham, a sapper in the Royal Engineers 264 Tunnel Company, died Private Alfred Frederick Taylor (no photo) of wounds on 30 August 1917. Harry was of the Ox and Bucks was killed on 22 the son of Joseph and Ellen Fantham the August 1917. It was not until July of the licensees of the Pack Horse public house in following year that his widow Mary Taylor, Tring Road and husband of Isabella. The year for many years and later for Joseph Holland’s during which he was missing must have been brewery. The Wendover Magazine reported appalling for his wife and three children. “Poor Harry received severe injuries whilst with a working party of the Royal Engineers At home in Wendover, mundane life in France, and lingered for some days in continued. Alfred Morley, an irate resident hospital in Boulogne before expiring. He of Dunsmore, wrote to the Bucks Herald leaves a young wife and two little children.” complaining about the new method of repairing the roads and compared it to an Private Benjamin Parkins, 2nd Inniskilling obstacle race. He wrote “The start is about Fusiliers, died of gas poisoning on 13 August 20 yards from two steam rollers working 1917. Ben was the son of Joshua and Sarah side by side. Wendover CofE Junior School (WCEJS) has embraced this challenge. In 2016 children from Year 3 (90 children) took part in a project spending time with residents in a specialist home. They sang songs, read poems and spent time with the residents visiting their bedrooms and exploring their way of life. Both young and old had memorable experiences.

Dementia Friend. They sang songs for the elderly to enjoy – ‘I do like to be beside the seaside’ was a clear favourite. Small groups knelt by each resident and shared Dementia Friends with their own Memory their Memory Boxes Boxes. There were moving moments when young and old shared memories of being a baby, going to school, playing football, being with friends and family. In the words of some of the residents: • The children are lovely we want them back to sing. • It was kind of the children to show us their special boxes.

This year another group of children – Year 5 (86 children) took part in a similar project over 6 weeks at the Willows, part of St Leonards Care Home, Aylesbury. All children were prepared through awareness

As the population ages and the number of people living with dementia increases, more and more young people are likely to be affected through family and friends, nearly a third from current statistics. openly about the subject of dementia and what it means. They still wear their badges with pride. Looking ahead to the future the children have made some pledges: I am 10 years old. As a Dementia Friend I will make people aware of dementia, make people understand it and make people realise that they are people too. I am 9 years old. As a Dementia Friend I will help the elderly with dementia to remember the things they forget. I will sing different songs to them. I am 9 years old. As a Dementia Friend I will tell my local community about dementia and help elderly people I see struggling. This has been another very busy and successful year for WCEJS. It is fitting to reflect on the targets that we were given by Ofsted last July: to make sure that the new assessment system is used effectively by everyone and to improve the standard of children’s writing. I am very pleased to say that we have made good progress in both areas, with writing being at a higher standard now than ever before – this was shown by our significant improvement in the Year 6 SATs. Overall, children are attaining higher and progressing more than ever in reading, writing, maths and science.

Schools reflect on all the wonderful opportunities children have had this year to produce and share their artwork, music and drama – not least the Year 6 end of year production. Our sports and extra-curricular provision has also continued to be very strong this year; we managed to achieve the gold standard for school games for the third year running. Our young leaders have also made a significant contribution; our Junior Road Safety Officers helped us to secure another gold level travel plan and we made it through to the national finals of the Modeshift Travel Awards. None of this would be possible without the hard work and commitment shown by the staff at WCEJS and the ongoing support of parents and governors. If you would like to be a school governor, or to give a little time as a volunteer, then please contact the school office: admin@wendoverjunior.co.uk. Gareth Mirams, Headteacher

Preschool Poppies recently visited Tiggywinkles Wildlife Hospital in Haddenham. The staff and children thoroughly enjoyed the day, getting up close to the hedgehogs and many other rescued animals. The staff at Tiggywinkles were very accommodating and made the day educational as well as memorable for all involved. Following the trip, the children were inspired to help our British wildlife, and they decided that building a hedgehog house and bird box was a good idea. Woodwork sessions were planned and the children were involved with planning their design, and selecting the materials they would need. The next project planned is to build some bug hotels for the preschool garden. Natasha How, Chair of Governors

info@wendoverneighbourhoodplan.co.uk Halton Lane Inquiry

A statement from Wendover Parish Council and WNP Steering Group(SG) was prepared with the help of the planning consultant engaged and presented at the Public Inquiry into whether development should be permitted at the Halton Lane Field site. Members of the SG also attended. The points of objection were:-

• Significant adverse impact on the landscape character (GP35 & RA2) • Harmful effects on the visual amenity of the area. • Substantial adverse impacts on the adjoining Weston Turville SSSI. • Significant intrusion into open countryside and loss of a Greenfield site. • A detrimental impact on the appearance of the rural area because it would result in coalescence between Weston Turville and World’s End. • Detrimental impacts on local infrastructure adding to the problems of for example - already oversubscribed schools, pressures on the local GP and dental services, lack of sufficent public transport links and increased congestion on the rural roads.

In addition we stressed the fact that there was a 5 year supply of housing land available and that the closure of Halton Camp meant all planning applications had to be looked at in the light of this development. We also stressed the overwhelming view of those consulted so far, which was that they wished to keep the existing green belt and green spaces around

Where possible we are following up points on matters raised at the launch event with the statutory bodies and trying to develop solutions. These include:

The Inquiry finished on 7 July. The Inspector asked that submissions from both parties ie, the developer and AVDC, and the draft s106 agreement should be placed on AVDC’s website by 12 July. Coping with the Care Fee Crisis

More than 400,000 people are in residential care and nursing homes in the UK. The number of people aged 85 and over is projected to more than double by 2039, and a surge in demand for places over the next two decades is expected as a result. With the cost burden of social care constantly increasing, recent government proposals suggest that continued attempts to raid the population’s personal coffers are a distinct probability. However, none of this need concern you if you take action to future-proof your assets against political interference, with the help of a Lifetime Trust. The concept of Trusts can be traced back to a time when knights joining the Crusades would ask a trusted neighbouring landowner to protect their castle and lands until their return. Today, they are a part of everyday life – for example, your pension is a Trust, as are charities and many hospitals and schools.

with its associated costs and delays in administering the estate, and (b) protection from inheritance tax, as assets held within a Trust will not form part of the taxable estate of your beneficiaries. However, a useful side-effect of such a Trust is that assets held within it cannot be meanstested or taken to pay for your care. A word of warning here though: as the Trust is not specifically designed for this purpose, it must have been set up at a time when you were in sound health and there was no foreseeable prospect of requiring care. If this is not clearly the case, the Local Authority could justifiably argue that ‘deliberate deprivation of assets’ had occurred, and lay claim to them accordingly. To protect your estate effectively, it is therefore vital to act while you’re in good health. Accord Legal Services will be happy to help – call 01296 620350 or email info@accordwills.com for free advice. See advert page 20.

You can place your own home and other assets into a Trust. Of particular interest are Lifetime Trusts that protect your estate both during your life and after your death to pass on securely and intact to your spouse, your children or other beneficiaries. The two key benefits most sought after are (a) avoiding the need to obtain a grant of probate

Outstanding care provided for you in the comfort and privacy of your own home by caring, kind and compassionate staff who are handpicked for their commitment and passion for excellent care. Safety, kindness and gentleness are our core values. With a fast-growing reputation for excellence in service delivery, we are your trusted local provider of home care. Butterflies are under great environmental pressure and one of BBOWT’s objectives is to give them ‘safe spaces’ to breed and flourish. Guided walks at College Lake and Yoesden on Saturday 29 July will focus on the great variety you can see on these reserves. There are also field trips at Yoesden on Sunday 13 August looking at lichens, those intriguing organisms we see every day but usually ignore, and on Chiltern gentians on Saturday 26 August at Dancersend. For at least two years we have been suffering the terrible noise and excessive speed of motorcycles along the strip of the A413 where we live (40mph) at weekends and it is unacceptable on many levels. I have watched motorcycles doing ‘wheelies along the main road’ even when the police were present at the local service station for a burglary investigation. I tried for 18 months to enlist BCC councillors help in the erection of a visible speed device so that we may produce photos of the offenders and their speed, what a waste of time that was. I contacted the police about 10/14 days ago to seek a meeting with our local officers about the problem, I was given an incident number but have heard nothing since. The whole thing wants one to do what the French would, dare I say it, ‘Action direct’. Apart from the excessive speeds I was under the impression that there were legal noise levels for motor vehicles, not along this road. A conversation with a Gt Missenden resident confirmed that the noise and speed do not end at the Firecrest!!!!

Driving Complaint

Further to Mr McRay’s letter in the July issue, I wish to raise a general concern at the ignorance of some drivers using the roads in and around Wendover, not just motorcyclists. A significant number of drivers/riders appear to be oblivious to the speed limit in built up areas. This has been regularly witnessed by myself, particularly on Dobbins Lane and Aylesbury Road, roads that have a usage by children travelling to and from the schools, whether from within Wendover or the railway station. Having seen the Aylesbury Road camera removed some years ago, is it not about time the issue of traffic calming and speed enforcement were revisited? Mr D Tucker, Wendover

My grandfather, grandmother and mother worked for Sir Herbert Stanley Reed KBE, the Conservative MP for Aylesbury from 19381950. In 1939 they were living and working at “The House in the Field”, which I believe was in Wendover. Youngsters take to the Air

Another successful Young Flyers event took place at the Airfield at RAF Halton in June, with children from the surrounding area being given 20 minutes of air experience flights with a view to encouraging their interest in aviation as a career.

Officer in Charge of the RAF Halton Aero

Club, Group Captain Mark Manwaring, said, “We have been running this event since 2000 and this year was the smoothest and most successful yet. Through the generosity of our members, 107 children of Service personnel enjoyed a 30 minute flight on a stunning summer’s afternoon around the Vale of Aylesbury. We were also able to give them a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) worksheet and some RAF Benevolent Fund souvenirs to take home along with their prestigious Young Flyers’ Certificate! The 8-18 year old age group is perfect for inspiring STEM subjects and if that leads to an interest or even a career in aviation, we will have made a big difference. It will be the same again for 2018, the RAF Centenary Year!”

Local Faces: Colet Head Students The Head Students at John Colet School were only appointed on Friday 23 June but the team got down to work immediately. They realised that communication is the key to leadership so they rearranged the Sixth Form noticeboard and also tidied the Common Room. This latter news will gladden the heart of any parent of a teen. The team plan fundraising for a microwave to be used by the Sixth Form, cared for and respected by them.

Conor Richardson Head Boy Studying at A-level Biology Chemistry BTEC Art & Design Planning to study architecture

These new leaders are very keen, indeed. They really want to encourage the involvement of the whole Sixth Form so they have restructured the Sixth Form Council with many new roles and set up an email address, essential in this day and age. They want to organise a whole school art competition in the new academic year and display the winners in the Sixth Form Common Room and perhaps elsewhere. They are aware that many Sixth Formers are not keen on participating in conventional sports so they want to set up fun informal competitions to keep them physically active.

Emma Galloway Deputy Head Girl Studying at A-level Psychology Sociology, Art General Studies Planning to study sociology

Vivian Pace Head Girl Studying at A-level English Literature Art BTEC Art & Design Planning to study illustration

They will have to meet somewhere large, like the Lecture Theatre and have to engage in proper debate - like in Parliament - but they disapprove of boorishness, so, better than Parliamentary behaviour!

Two whole-school areas where the leaders feel they can really make a difference are: 1. students who are experiencing difficulties might approach a Sixth Former if they don’t want to talk to a member of staff immediately 2. they are very keen on environmental issues within the school so there will be To make sure the whole school has a bigger an ongoing campaign to make sure the say in matters that affect students, they plan cloakrooms are kept in good condition and to expand the School Council to around 50. litter is properly disposed of.

Generation Z is much more politically aware than their immediate predecessors. Reeling from the shock of Brexit they are keenly aware of how that will impact the rest of their lives and most would have voted Remain so they feel disenfranchised. This was quickly followed by the surprising triumph of Trump in the US Presidential elections. Having Ryan Parsons researched the Deputy Head Boy general election they Studying at A-level are very keen to vote Mathematics at every possible History chance in the future Business Studies to make sure their Planning to study finance and banking voice is heard. The Presidential Election in France confirms that things are changing everywhere. Recent events have made them aware of a “dangerous mood in the air”. This means they feel the need to be more alert in every day situations but politically, too. They are delighted that the school encourages Independent Study in every subject and they are looking forward to the next step in their education next summer. They all have plans to keep all their options open to make them as employable as possible throughout life. Conor says, “The teachers at John Colet School have helped me to become organised and have given me so many opportunities to join in with so many things.”

Matters Arising Wendover Parish Council Page

View from the Chair

In July I attended a meeting of the Local Area Forum. The ‘LAF’ is a chance for parishes, the public, council officers and district and county councillors to discuss community priorities for services in the area. Often it’s a business-like but rather dull affair. Not this time though. The Dementia Action Alliance showed a video of Wendover viewed through the eyes of people with dementia. It’s a compelling piece of work which I hope gets a wide audience and can be viewed on Wendover News website. It shows that the broader community of Wendover are well on their way to being a caring place that supports people that need us. I was very proud of Wendover and I think other communities who watched were moved to emulate Wendover’s initiative. Tom Walsh, Chairman

Tring Road

At last, many thanks to TfB, the upheaval of resurfacing works are now a thing of the past and the road and roundabout are smooth with traffic noise reduced. It took much nudging from WPC but it’s been worth it.

is flying. A drone has been operating in the area. This isn’t a toy, it’s a substantial piece of equipment with performance to match its size. The police are now aware of the drone flying as it’s possible that the operation of a drone of this type in the vicinity of houses and Halton Airfield is dangerous to both residents and aviators.

Next Parish Council Meeting Tuesday 5 September 7.30pm St Anne’s Hall

It has been noted that the Clock Tower clock has been a little fast. The specialists have been in to check and adjust the mechanism, but they tell us some of the problems might be heat related. Metal expands in hot weather and clock accuracy suffers as a result.

Did you know . . . ? Your Parish Council maintains 7 bus shelters?

Mindless behaviour

We have had even more broken glass and beer cans in the parks in the last few weeks. Someone set fire to the matting around the climbing wall and motorbikes were reported in Hampden Meadow on 25 June. We are reporting incidents to the police but if you Tring Road in full glory with road markings after the resurfacing. Photo Joseph Nye see any anti social behaviour please call 101 immediately. Hopefully the police will respond quickly and collar a culprit or two. Roads are shared spaces

Motorists are undoubtably at the apex of road users but this premier position brings with it real responsibilities. There have been several incidents reported lately where horse riders and cyclists have been lucky to avoid serious injury. It’s the usual story of fast cars and slow riders, often on a bend, not sharing space with consideration. WPC asks that motorists take responsibility and think about what’s around the next corner and share our roads with care.
