Following their disastrous April offensive in the Champagne area the French army was exhausted and demoralised and the troops became mutinous. The French Commander, Nivelle, was replaced by Petain. The Italians fought the Tenth Battle of the Isonzo without success. At sea, the British transport ship Arcadian was torpedoed by a German submarine losing 277 sailors. The United States introduced a Conscription Bill and the first US troops, led by General Pershing, landed in France. A major British attack near Arras captured Fresnoy. It was during the attack at Fresnoy that a local soldier, Thomas Parkins, was killed in action. Tom Parkins, aged 33, was serving with the Gloucester Regiment. He was born in Ellesborough, the son of Joshua and Sarah Parkins, and he and his wife, Florence, and their young family, were living in Great Missenden. Two other local soldiers died in May. Arthur Johnson, 30, of the Suffolk Regiment, was killed on 12 May near Monchy. He is commemorated on his sister’s grave in Wendover churchyard. Arthur Spittles was the son of Mrs Spittles who lived on London Road. Arthur enlisted in the Royal Field Artillery in September 1915, but was discharged in June 1916. Just

before enlisting, Arthur had a tobogganing accident on the Wendover hills and fractured his tibia, which gradually developed osteosarcoma. Eventually, Arthur was obliged to have a leg amputated. He died on 9 May and is buried in the Wendover churchyard. All three men have their names engraved on the Wendover War Memorial. The Bucks Herald reported “A Shocking Fatality at Wendover”. It concerned one John Hussey of Hughenden who was a steam-roller flagman employed by the Wycombe District Council. At the enquiry, held in the Wendover Parish Room, Harry Witney of Cold Harbour gave the following account. He and Hussey were walking by the side of the steam roller near Ivy Cottage. Hussey walked in front of the roller and the roller caught his right heel. This caused him to fall and the roller passed over him. Hussey was crushed “in a terrible manner”. The jury returned a verdict of accidental death and the driver was exonerated. During May, several cases of minor crimes came before the Petty Sessions Court. Two of the culprits were wives of air-mechanics stationed at Halton. Both admitted shoplifting. Mary Davis Jacobs of London was

charged w i t h stealing a tin of salmon valued at one shilling from the Mayertorne Manor shop of Mrs Ellen Turner and four fountain pens from Mr Lee’s shop in the High Street. Millie Muscovitch was found guilty of stealing three pieces of Arcadia china also from Mr Lee. The Chairman took a lenient view of both cases because of previous good character and they were fined £2 on each charge. Miss Isobel Fry took over Mayertorne Manor, near Wendover Dean, and opened a school for boys and girls. Apart from normal school lessons there were practical activities. The school had a farm with pigs, poultry and a small herd of cows and the children spent half their time learning to milk the cows and make butter and they also worked on the kitchen garden growing vegetables. Rabbits were reared for sale. Miss Fry said that “the children like the life immensely”. RAF Halton Pupils at Wendover CE Junior School took part in a Dragon’s Den style event recently. They were allocated an amount of money and ‘bought’ items such as cardboard boxes, toilet roll holders, bubble wrap and sponge material etc, then set to work constructing a leisure complex, hotel or other business. Warrant Officer Simon Curtis, from RAF Halton’s Communication Squadron, was invited to judge the event along with three others, Emma Guy, a local architect, Angela Glazier, School Governor and Tom Walsh, Chair of the Wendover Parish Council. There were six finalists and one wild card, chosen by the judges beforehand, who made a Dragon’s Den style pitch to the judges and answered questions about their project before judging began. Prior to the pitch they were given business cards made by the groups. Warrant Officer Curtis said: “Some fantastic ideas and models, it was clear an enormous amount of work had gone into

Council withdraws VALP response. Wendover Parish Council has decided to withdraw its response to the draft Vale of Aylesbury Local Plan (VALP), in order to allow the recently launched Neighbourhood Plan to “lead on planning for Wendover.”

David Lidington The closure of RAF Halton in 2022 will be significant in both symbolic and practical terms. For 100 years, since Trenchard created what was originally the Royal Flying Corps, the men and women of the RAF have been an integral part of local civic and community life. I shall miss them. Earlier this year, I organised a meeting at the Ministry of Defence for The Chairman and Vice-Chairman of Halton Parish Council and Steve Bowles on behalf of Aylesbury Vale District Council to have an initial discussion with Mark Lancaster, the Minister with responsibility for implementing this change.

Inevitably, the closure of the station will mean significant housing growth. The MoD’s budget depends in part on assumptions about the gain that can be realised by disposing of surplus land for development. But I was encouraged by Mr Lancaster’s openness to ideas that were more inventive than just trying to cram in as many homes to the acre as possible.

It’s clear that the decision has been taken and that closure will go ahead. In part, this is part of a much bigger programme under which

Several important practical issues also need addressing in a master plan. The station is a critically important site between Wendover, Halton, Weston Turville and Aston Clinton. We need a solution that avoids coalescence and protects village identities. Infrastructure, both roads and broadband, are important. So too is the matter of school places. While Halton Primary School could be expanded, we shall also need additional secondary school places. GP provision will also need to be looked at. I would also like to find a way to preserve some kind of RAF heritage presence. There are two small museums on the station, the old training trench, and of course St George’s Church with its windows and memorials paying tribute to the achievements and sacrifices of generations of airmen and women. Some local residents have already come forward with ideas for the future. I hope many more will do so. We need to work together to turn this change into an opportunity.

As a retired teacher living near the Wendover Arm of the Grand Union Canal, I want to defend our education services and support social care provision in the county. We need excellent education for all our children, not cut backs and threats of ever larger class sizes and a strategic plan to deal with the massive issues facing our community. Serious underfunding of adult social care will affect us all - at present, anyone with £23,000 of assets (which includes their home) will be forced to pay for their old age care. We must elect Councillors who will challenge the status quo. On Thursday 4 May, voters will elect a Councillor for Wendover, Halton & Stoke Mandeville. As your current Bucks County Councillor, I have enjoyed the last 4 years representing you at County Hall. I have tried to help out where I can in the many local issues that arise. I have been involved in road & footpath projects, grants for speed reduction devices to Parish Councils, and provision of salt bins. If elected once again, I will stand up for all residents and I will continue for HS2 to be totally scrapped. Please cast your vote for me. Thank You! I am a District Councillor for Wendover & Halton. Although given Royal Assent I still feel HS2 should not go ahead and I will continue to work with the community to ensure the area gets the best possible mitigation. I met Mark Lancaster MP defence minister to discuss the closure of RAF Halton and am working with local stakeholders to ensure a sustainable scheme that meets the community’s wishes is achieved. I have a record of working for the community all year round and believe that by working together we can improve our community and ensure a brighter future for our area.

As a Green councillor I would press for: protection of wild fauna and flora to maintain healthy ecosystems in the face of ever-increasing development pressures, safe disposal of waste; preferably with associated clean energy, no fracking in our locality, well maintained foot and cycle paths, affordable and efficient public transport which reduces road traffic and therefore air pollution, the protection of community facilities like libraries, and excellent, council-delivered, social care for the young, old, and people with disabilities. Conservative councillors have not challenged the politically driven cuts to public services. Green councillors believe that local democracy and funding is worth fighting for.

I live on the Princess Mary estate so will be keeping a keen eye on what our local councillors decide. I’ve worked locally as a GP for 15 years, including ten years serving the heart of Wendover and Halton. This has given me clear insights into the issues affecting the health and wellbeing of all local residents. We need a clear local plan to inform development, or we will find ourselves at the mercy of big commercial companies also to support and develop a culture of small locally based business in the town, encouraging the creative and enterprising skills of local people. Living and working locally for 47 years I am an active campaigner and Christian, married to Lesley we have 3 children, 6 grandchildren and 2 greats! As your county councillor I want a say in, education and society, housing overdevelopment, road rail and other infrastructures. I believe councils should serve their communities over Whitehall (and eu) policy and directives. I also uphold the importance of the family, personal and national identity and education in fostering and being the primary influencers of a sustainable society with good, positive and common sense values in line with our heritage. I have lived in Aston Clinton for more than 25 years and my children attend our local school. As one of the founders of the village’s Charity Beer Festival, I have seen how individuals and groups can contribute to activities that benefit local families, promote health and wellbeing, and support older or disadvantaged people in our community. But we need our County Council to work for us, too. On education, social care, children’s services and the state of our roads, it is failing to provide adequate services. I will represent your interests, challenge Council decisions and speak up for you. I have served on Bucks County Council for 40 years and representing Aston Clinton & Bierton is an honour. I thoroughly really enjoy helping our communities and individuals with their issues. Increasingly my time is taken up fighting the increased pressure of new developments which threatens our communities. As a farmer’s son, I love the countryside and village life, it frustrates me how Aylesbury and the villages I represent grow ever closer. I promise I will continue, if re-elected, to fight all major developments and stop them destroying the communities we love. Please vote for me on May the 4th. As a Green councillor I would press for the safe disposal of waste, preferably with associated clean energy, no fracking in our locality, well maintained foot and cycle paths, affordable and efficient public transport which reduces road traffic and therefore potholes and air pollution, the protection of community facilities like libraries and excellent, council-delivered social care for the young, old, and people with disabilities. I would also challenge the politically driven cuts to our public services, because I believe that local democracy and funding is worth fighting for. I've been an Aylesbury Town Councillor for many years and am the current chair of the Planning Committee. Failure by the Conservatives to put in place a development plan have allowed huge numbers of poor, speculative applications to be passed damaging the local infrastructure. Conservative government policy is for Aylesbury and the villages to be developed, it is the Conservative councils who are failing to represent the interests of residents of against the developers. All I can tell you is that I will do my best to represent you and your concerns should I secure your vote.

One of the biggest local issues is the effects HS2 will have on our beautiful area. It has received royal assent and is going ahead. We have to stop rewarding people with our votes if they aren't going to deliver on our needs. Very simply, whoever your next District and County Councillors are they must be all over the mitigation plan and holding HS2 to account. My first action as a District Councillor will be to meet with HS2 Ltd over plans, meet with AVDC officers about mitigation and report back to you regularly on progress. I moved to mid Bucks 32 years ago to start a job as a prosecutor in a team based in Wendover Police Station. Now I have retired from the Crown Prosecution Service I want to spend time supporting the community. At a time of great change I will: •Vote to preserve the Green Belt and Wendover •Lobby to make sure new uses for RAF Halton protect the local economy, environment and facilities •Support local business •Put the residents of Wendover and Halton first at ADVC •Work to ensure Council services are efficient and economic.

John Colet School will have assemblies that week about Dementia Awareness. Wendover Junior School has already spent a couple of years training its pupils about dementia awareness and they are devising a questionnaire about awareness for people to complete on Launch Day. Several organisations are holding drop in events in and around Wendover before and during Launch Week as shown in the table at the bottom of the previous column. them. Each time, a Steering Group member spoke briefly, explained the process and boards encouraging those present to take part, by completing post-it notes or talking to a Group member. At least 251 people of all ages, mostly senior, were engaged.

Wendover Bowls Club

With the ending of the indoor Short Mat Bowls Season Wendover Bowls Club has now been Lawn Green Bowling since Mid-April. Over the winter a great deal of work has been carried out to the bowling green which is making the bowling even more enjoyable. The season’s fixtures include a great variety of matches, both home and away. Every Tuesday afternoon and most Friday evenings, we continue to hold Club Turn Up and Play “Roll-ups” for members. The Club welcomes new members and if you have ever thought of playing or taking part in this popular sport do give it a try. Wendover Arm Trust

Restoration of the Wendover Arm

The Wendover Arm Trust (WAT) was formed in 1989 to promote restoration of the Wendover Arm of the Grand Union Canal to full navigation. In 1793, construction of the Wendover Arm began as a feeder arm, and it opened in 1797. Reservoirs had been built to collect water and commercial traffic started to build up, rapidly. For the time, the 4 year building period was astonishing, but the extra commercial burden contributed to leakage problems and the canal underwent continual repairs thoughout its life. The canal was finally closed to through traffic in 1904. The original function of the Arm to supply water to the summit of the Grand Union Canal continued. The Wendover Arm Trust was formed in 1989 and in 1997, reconstruction of the canal began. At the Whitehouses pumping station, just over two miles from the junction, some canal side work last year revealed not only the water storage facilities, but also interesting activity in the ruins of the nearby cottages. Bucks Archeological Society were called in to do a professional excavation and revealed a

serious chemical laboratory in a basement, complete with mysterious bottles containing liquids which needed investigating and proved to contain acids and alkalis amongst other chemicals. Evidence from this work should support a lottery bid to develop visitor facilities at this location including developing a picnic area for moorers. It is hoped some trees will be planted around these areas, and WAT is looking for some sponsors to finance Plant-A-Tree. Prices will vary, depending on the species, but if you wish to sponsor a tree or two, then contact John Reynolds on mobile (07787 355515). The next Wendover Arm Trust open day is on Sunday 4 June 2017, 12.30 - 4pm at St Mary’s Church, Drayton Beauchamp, HP22 5LS. You can enjoy guided tours of the site including watching voluteers at work and visit re-watered areas. Inside the church a video will show recent progress. There will also be an exhibition and WAT volunteers can explain what has been happening. There are tea and cakes for sale as well as side shows. Admission is free but donations towards the Trust are very much welcome! So bring a picnic with you and enjoy the afternoon! Later in the year there will be another open day onn Sunday 3 September 2017, 12.30 - 4pm. You can enjoy a great day at the canal site. All the same events and shows will be taking place and donations will still be welcome!

Wendover working together The Purssell Path

The Wendover Society owns the Purssell Path. This was originally part of the route of a railway line, known affectionately as the “Puffing Billy track”, which ran from Wendover Station to the RAF Base at Halton. Opening during World War 1, the railway finally closed in 1963. The land that formed the route was sold off piecemeal to a large number of people. The Purssell Path section passed to the Wendover Society from the estate of the late Mrs Enid Farrow. The idea of this bequest was to offer some form of protection from unwanted development. These days, the land is used as a Public Footpath and a Nature area. The Society does its best to look after the fringes of the Path. The surface of the Path is the

Grass Cutting

As mentioned last month, WPC has taken over a number of services devolved from Bucks CC. These include: the cutting of grass verges within the 30mph limit; siding out footpaths; the maintenance of some public footpaths; the cleaning of road signs and some hedge cutting. These services have been subject to cutbacks in recent years and the PC felt that the only way to deliver a satisfactory level of service to Wendover was to undertake the work ourselves. The first cut is now complete and, apart from a few, hopefully resolved, issues with grass clippings being left on the highway, it has gone well.

Did you know . . .?? Your Parish Council maintains 416 Street Lights? The majority are now converted to LED.

Pot Holes

We are getting a lot of comments about holes in the road. This is a highways issue and we have no authority to deal with complaints about the condition of the roads or pot holes. Please send your complaints directly to Bucks County Council www. transportforbucks.net/Report-it-pothole. aspx. Hopefully the more complaints the quicker we should get a result! The problems with the Tring Road are due to be resolved, hopefully, in the near future.
