Wendover Youth Centre (WYC)
Serving the Young People of Wendover The recent WYC AGM allowed the Trustees to thank supporters, leaders, volunteers, sponsors and helpers. The Centre is particularly fortunate to share the Wharf Road site with the schools. This places WYC at the centre of a community which cares passionately about its local clubs and services. The AGM showcased youth activities run by the Centre. A presentation from Paul on Amazing Donkey, which runs for 10-12 year olds, was followed by one from Adam, of Premier Sport, on the activities it organises including holiday, pre- and post-school clubs. Tess, who runs drama clubs on a Saturday morning, gave the perspective of a hirer. Bridget talked about the important partnership with St Mary’s Church, which includes financial support for a joint youth worker. Sara, of Aylesbury Youth Action (AYA), outlined a new joint project to gain an enhanced knowledge of needs and aspirations of young people in Wendover and the surrounding communities.

It is estimated that the Youth Centre has 2000 contacts with people aged 5 to 18 each month. The Centre is funded by the local community and needs to generate about £65,000 each year to continue with current services and facilities. Thanks to Wendover Parish Council (WPC), the Lionel Abel-Smith Trust (LAST), Budgens and all who hire the Centre for their encouragement and financial support. WYC is looking to expand its offering by: • Employing an additional session youth worker, and finding more volunteers, • Hiring to more local groups and individuals, • Deepening and refining the services provided to the local schools, • Converting the grass area into all-weather turf, • Seeking new Trustees to contribute to this important work in the Community. On the Western Front the Battle of Messines took place in June 1917. Nineteen mines were exploded under the Messines-Wytschaete Ridge and British troops captured the area with relatively few losses. It was hailed as a great victory. The Germans launched their first heavy bomber raid on London and 162 people were killed and over 400 injured. The use by the Germans of Gotha bombers prompted the British Royal family to change their name from Saxe-Coburg-Gotha to Windsor. A reminder of the world-wide scale of the war came when Brazil revoked her neutrality and seized all German ships within her territorial waters. Two Wendover men became casualties in June. Corporal Gordon Carter was a regular soldier serving with the Bucks Hussars. He was killed in Egypt a week after his 21st birthday. He was the son of Mr and Mrs Thomas Carter of the High Street and before joining up he frequently helped his father in the forge. Sergeant Leonard Wells of
the Bedfordshire Regiment was severely wounded in both legs and spent some weeks recuperating in the Sheffield Royal Infirmary where he was visited by his wife Martha and other members of his family who lived on Aylesbury Street. Leonard Wells, who had a leg amputated, eventually arrived home in December 1917. He died in 1975 aged 81.

In total he had stolen property to the value of £627 and he admitted that he had unlawfully taken over 100 motor cycles from all over the country. Balshaw told the court that he was separated from his wife and since then he had been “playing fast and loose” and that he had no object in life. Balshaw had been released from prison in 1916 on condition that he joined the forces. At the Assizes, Balshaw was told that he disgraced the uniform he wore and was sentenced to three years penal servitude. Mined Tunnel
As residents will be aware The Wendover Society managed to persuade the government to replace one of the proposed viaducts by a tunnel insisting that it should be a cut and cover tunnel (Green Tunnel). They finally succeeded in getting this tunnel enlarged. Their latest attempt was for the proposed Green Tunnel to be replaced by a Mined Tunnel, which they felt would cause less disruption and upon advice was cheaper to build. Helped by our Local MP David Lidington they managed to present their views directly to the Under Secretary of State responsible for HS2 (Andrew Jones) but unfortunately their proposal was rejected. In the circumstances as the cost of their Consultant’s work was paid by funds provided by members (and a grant given by the Parish Council) they felt that to incur further costs would be unfair, so they decided to give up their fight. However, the Parish Council felt that it was their duty to their parishioners to do all they can to pursue the matter further

so they have decided to take over what the Wendover Society started and take up the baton. Work has already started to prepare a statement answering the government’s reasons for the last rejection. David Lidington has agreed to present this to the Secretary of State when Parliament reassembles after the General Election.
Improvements to cycleways
As part of mitigation works HS2 Ltd undertook to provide finance to Bucks County Council for the improvement of cycleways in the Wendover area. BCC have already consulted local cycle groups and together with the Parish Council are drafting a proposal. Before the proposal is finalised they would like to hear from anyone with suggestions to make, improve or create new cycleways. After such a triumphant season this is perhaps a great way for Mr Wendover to bow out after a 42 year long association with Wendover Football Club. This month we want to show our admiration and gratitude for our Club Secretary, Mr Kieron Thomas. Throughout his time at the club, Kieron has witnessed many great contests, victories, friendships and feats of selflessness. Kieron has been the heart and soul of our team for many years, taking on various roles including Player, Manager and Secretary. Hundreds of players have come and gone and probably never realised how much work this man puts into keeping this club of ours going and how pivotal he has been in ensuring that one of Wendover’s oldest clubs continues for the next generations. Today the committee is strong and the club has never had a brighter future. However rewind a few seasons and it was much darker days for the club. It is no understatement to say that without Kieron the club wouldn’t be running how it is today and the Committee and all of the club’s current members would like to wish Kieron a sincere Thank You for giving his time to us. He will be sorely missed from the club. We hope that Kieron enjoyed his playing days throughout the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and 00’s (debuting in 1975 in the Wycombe District Premier Division - an outstanding achievement), and we would like to welcome him as a Lifetime Member of our club.

It’s June and Bucks Open Studios Yellow signs will be springing up all over the County for the 32nd time between 10 and 25 June. That means that there are many Artists and Makers opening their studios to show what stunning art work goes on throughout the County, often behind closed doors, and for those not able to open their workshops and studios there are many exhibitions in village halls and other venues. There is a comprehensive directory available, listing over 400 different artists and more than 200 different venues, and when they are open, (times and dates are different from venue to venue).

Born in 2010, Esmé Davison-Hoult was featured as the youngest ever Local Face in Wendover News, in June 2015, to highlight her needs since her diagnosis of Rett Syndrome. Her parents Anthony and Abigail had set up a charity, Esmé’s Allstars, in February 2014 to raise money for all the specialist equipment she needs in order to thrive despite the “locked-in” nature of her symptoms. This includes a specialist “eye-gaze” system which enables her to hold her own with younger brother Patrick and others despite having lost the ability to speak. Mother Abigail has become an “eyegaze” tutor supporting others who need this vital technology. Esmé's Allstars places collection tins in various places. Esmé and her family were devastated, therefore, that one of these collection boxes was recently ransacked and found empty. In Memoriam
Clarice Watson (aged 98) died on Friday, 12 May 2017 at Hampden Hall Care Home. Clarice moved to Wendover six years ago, to live near to her family. She had spent all her 92 years in her home town of Blackburn Lancashire and was reluctant, to say the least, to moving South. However, she made many friends during her time here and remained independent and active until only the last couple of weeks of her life. Her family are grateful to all who helped and befriended her. With BREXIT imminent our government is telling us to go and export around the world. Trading into new markets is incredibly difficult but can be made much easier by having good, reliable local contacts.
However, Rotary is not only about raising money for charity. We enjoy the work we do and meet regularly to have simple meals just enjoying the social occasion. These meals are held at local restaurants and pubs including the King and Queen in Wendover and the Holiday Inn in Weston Turville. Rotary was originally set up by technical and professional people to do charitable activities and to create a network of contacts. Rotary has clubs in most countries and it is the biggest global charitable organisation. A Rotarian can go and visit another club anywhere in the UK or overseas. Taking the Clock Tower to France!
A group of members of the Wendover Twinning Association will be travelling over to Liffré at the beginning of June, and during a soirée on the Friday night we will be presenting the Mayor with a gift that we have commissioned from local company Wendover Wood. They have done us proud, with a replica of the Clock Tower, made out of local wood. You can see it in a photo on the Wendover News Facebook page. The full inscription on the base reads ‘Wendover – Liffré. Twinned since 1976’. Do have a look and admire Bob and Adam’s excellent work. The soirée will continue with a meal, entertainment and dancing and the following day we will all go on an outing to a secret destination. Luckily during this action-packed weekend we’ll have a chance to spend some quiet time with our hosts before getting the coach and ferry back on Monday morning.

These are the people we have voted for and appear to be trying to protect the Vale from further large scale development. And yet it keeps happening. Fields, hedgerows and copses in Aston Clinton, Stoke Mandeville, Weston Turville and Wendover are being ripped up under the teeth of the developer’s diggers. In Worlds End the preservation of a Site of Special Scientific Interest in its current condition hangs by a thread dependent on the decision to be made by the Planning Inspectorate in June. My question is, to those who can answer, via this newspaper, who is doing this to us and the Vale? More importantly why are they doing this? We do not want it. My elected representatives do not want it. So please, tell us, the people who pay their council tax to those paid to make these decisions, why you want it? At the very least, we deserve an answer. ASB along the Canal
I live overlooking the canal at the Wharf Road end and have witnessed 2 events over the last few weeks carried out by the same local resident! Both incidents occurred very early in the morning. The first incident took place in April when he dumped his old compost barrel next to the poo bin by the canal, the next happened in May when he was seen carrying an AVDC brown bin along the canal and dumping it in the bushes! I find abhorrent this blatant disregard for our community. I hope he decides in his early walks to recover the bins he dumped and dispose of them in the correct manner! Canalside Resident

RAF Halton Team Legless visits RAF Halton
Mr Stuart Robinson and Flight Sergeant Darren Norman have visited RAF Halton to deliver an inspirational speech to Station personnel and Airman’s Development Flight. The two have known each other since school days and joined the military at the same time in 2001, but back in February 2013 Stu’s life took a dramatic change of direction. A Corporal serving in the Royal Air Force Regiment, a husband and a father, Stu was on his fourth deployment to Afghanistan. Both Stu and his family were used to his frequent deployments and this one started off like any other. During a vehicle patrol, his vehicle drove over and initiated an Improvised Explosive Device (IED). The IED was detonated right underneath his seat and he took the full impact of the explosion. Stu’s left leg was amputed at the scene, with his right leg hanging on by a thread, his spine was fractured in 18 different places, both scapula were fractured, his lower left
arm, sternum, pelvis and jaw in three places. The formation of TEAM LEGLESS was initially for the purpose of giving Stu something to focus on and competing in Airfield Anarchy, in 2015, was the first event and subsequently increased the profile of the team. This is when the focus of TEAM LEGLESS changed in the fact that it was now inspiring others as well, with Darren posing the question that if Stu can do these events with no legs then why can’t I? Stu went on to be selected for the Invictus Games in 2014 where, competing in Wheelchair Rugby, he came away with a gold medal and a bronze in the 2016 games; his aim now is to be selected for TEAM GB for the 2020 Paralympics.
TEAM LEGLESS is a group of serving members of the Armed forces, who attempt challenges and show with teamwork, motivation and determination, that anybody irrespective of their disability can still complete any challenge put in front of them. Local Faces: Jane Miller & Diane Riddy ‘JADI’
Twin sisters Jane Miller, who lives in Wendover, and Diane Riddy, have joined forces to paint under the name of ‘Jadi’ – a most intriguing concept!! Home for some 25 plus years, was Seer Green, just on the outskirts of Beaconsfield in the idyllic Buckinghamshire countryside. Having a very practical father, they often found themselves helping dad with chores and found they were quite creative in one way or another! The garden shed was painted and became a Hospital for sick animals. They produced their first masterpiece at the age of about 7 years using a variety of items out of the garage including rusty nails, old rubber piping and some very sticky substance, probably used in the plumbing industry, as that was dad’s profession. It did keep them amused for hours and out from under their mother’s feet! School life was endearing – Art, of course being the favourite lesson, it seemed far more exciting than the ‘three R’s’! If the clocks could be turned back! How things could have turned out so differently but in those days they were encouraged to get a ‘proper job’ so both left school to become shorthand typists. No formal art training! Fast forward now some 30+ years – Jane travelled the world with her husband’s career and both held jobs and raised families.
About 8 years ago, Diane had a fall whilst out walking (should have taken more water with it!) resulting in an ankle fracture and leaving her immobile for about 7 weeks. This resulted in her being taken to a local art class – and that is really where it all started. The teacher was so encouraging and gave her the confidence to exhibit a painting in a local exhibition – and how amazed and excited she was when she found out it had sold. Jane soon got her paint brushes out on retiring from a full time job and many hours were spent painting together, albeit working on separate pieces.

View from the Chair
Where did the year go? It only seems weeks since the 2016 Annual Parish Meeting and whoosh, we’ve just had the 2017 edition. I would like to thank our speakers, the Deputy Head Girl and Boy from the John Colet School who did a grand job. This year’s meeting included a lively question and answer session about the RAF Halton closure, the limited influence the Parish Council has on planning, HS2 and the difficulty of getting action from TfB. We also had the Neighbourhood Plan on display. I’d like to see more people attend as, for me, it’s a great opportunity to listen to your concerns and an opportunity for you to hear what your neighbours think. There’s even a glass of wine or a soft drink, so why not come next year? Tom Walsh, Chairman

Tree Survey
From time to time we shall be running surveys to help judge opinions and concerns in the Community. Currently the survey is asking about more trees in Wendover. It can be completed on our website and will close at the end of June.

Parking on the pavement
In Wendover there is an epidemic of parking with two wheels on the pavement and across dropped kerbs. It blocks the footpath so that pedestrians, those with prams, mobility scooters, wheelchairs or impaired sight are put at risk as a favourite location near the centre of they struggle to find Wendover a way around the

Pylons
The National Grid are currently carrying out extensive works to pylons to upgrade existing supplies. Concerns have been raised by residents that HS2 Ltd had begun enabling works without informing the Community. We have received assurances from HS2 Ltd that this is not the case and that we will be kept fully informed in advance of any works connected with the Railway.
Freedom Parade
A sunny Sunday, on 14 May saw troops Congratulations! We would like to congratulate the Wendover from RAF Halton, Action Group (WAG) on 20 YEARS running bayonets fixed the Community Minibus. WAG has quietly and band playing, and reliably provided an important service marching through supporting older or disabled residents who Wendover exercising would be unable to get to market, church their Freedom of or social events.
