Flu Vaccine
email: advice@practicalcomputing.co.uk
We are expecting delivery of influenza vaccine for 2017-18 season in mid-September and will commence our annual immunisation programme at the end of the month. As in previous years we will hold special Saturday morning sessions for eligible patients: these include all adults aged 65 years or older on 31 March 2017, and those with pre-existing conditions such as heart, lung or kidney disease. Please check our website, our Facebook page or noticeboards in the practice for full details. We will also offer nasal vaccine for at risk children, and for all children in certain age groups. Immunisation with flu vaccine helps protect the health of older people and those with long term conditions. The injected flu vaccine given to adults contains inactivated, or killed, strains of the flu virus and cannot cause flu or colds.

The Third Ypres Battle (Passchendaele) continued. British troops captured Zonnebeke and Polygon Wood with heavy casualties. Russia declared itself a Republic with Kerensky at its head. The German Army overwhelmed the Russians at Riga using new stormtrooper tactics. German aeroplanes bombed London and the South-East of England throughout the month. Costa Rica broke off its alliance with Germany.

In September 1917 four Wendover men were killed in action. Benjamin Buckingham, 1st Mate in the Merchant Navy aged 43, drowned in the English Channel on 4 September when his ship, the SS Bishopstone, was torpedoed whilst on a cargo run from Portsmouth to Le Havre. He had twice survived similar experiences when serving aboard ships sunk by U-boat action. Ben and his wife Kate lived with their young family at ‘Elthorpe’, Nightingale Road. Jesse Robert Slade of the Ox & Bucks aged 19, the son of Mr and Mrs George Slade of Cold Comfort Farm, died of wounds on 22 September 1917. Jesse, nicknamed Dapper, joined the Territorials long before he reached military age and he was for some time retained as a bugler. The Bucks Herald noted in his obituary that Jesse had been employed at the station book-shop and was therefore well-known and much respected in Wendover. His early days in the Church Lads Brigade and enthusiasm for playing the

Chiltern Brewery Success The Chiltern Brewery is glittering with stardom from this year’s Great Taste Awards where star of the show Bodger’s Barley Wine 8.5% vol has scooped a 3 Gold Star Award. Organised by the Guild of Fine Food, Great Taste, the world’s most coveted and prestigious food and drink awards, have once again showered stars on The Chiltern Brewery. Bodger’s Barley Wine has also now been nominated for The Golden Fork Awards with the potential to become Supreme Champion. 300’s Dark Old Ale 5.0% and LordLieutenant’s Porter 6.0% were each awarded 1 Gold Star, with fantastic feedback from the judging panel. Not only does every single one of the brewery’s bottled beers currently hold a Great Taste Award, but they have won a total of 31 stars since 2011 – an amazing testament to the quality of their brewing and the dedication of the team.
This immediately follows an amazing week of celebration for the brewery where they were voted ‘Central Chilterns Champion’ in The Chiltern Society Craft Beer Awards with their bottled John Hampden’s Golden Harvest Ale being their highest rated beer. John Hampden’s was also given a 5* verdict in Gluten Free Heaven Magazine, the only one out of 6 gluten free beers, and was voted ‘Editor’s Choice’. From inception the ethos at The Chiltern Brewery has been to brew natural, wholesome beers using 100% British ingredients. 37 years on, The Chiltern Brewery remains the oldest independent brewery in Buckinghamshire and the Chiltern Hills. The beers are available at various independent outlets, from the brewery shop in Terrick and at www.chilternbrewery.co.uk.

Dementia Friendly ‘Walking the Patch’
The Wendover Dementia Alliance is keen to understand how people living with dementia experience the environment in and around the area. The environment includes the roads, pathways, greenspaces and shared spaces such as shops and amenities; the things most of us take for granted. ‘Walking the Patch’ is as it suggests, a walk around Wendover, but through the eyes of someone living with dementia. Five members of the Alliance, including two members with a diagnosis of dementia and a carer who can no longer get around without her mobility scooter, were separately accompanied by Cara Saul of Lindengate who filmed their progress as they traversed some highways and byways of Wendover. In common with many people living with dementia, one of our walkers has a significant mobility problem and needs a rollator to help with his balance. Problems were caught on film at a number of points
as our walker tried to navigate certain pathways in Wendover. The biggest concern for both able bodied and the ‘walker’ was the narrow pathway past Witchell along South Street. Although recently cut back, the hedging reduces the width of the pathway and the camber tends to push the rollator user towards the road. With cars speeding up as they leave Wendover, the noise can be both disorienting and distressing. Matters are made worse by the lamppost which intrudes into the pathway as you approach the junction with Chapel Lane. The narrowness of the pathway made it absolutely inaccessible to the mobility scooter user. Another area of concern, perhaps less so during the drier months, is the green and cricket ground below Witchell Pavilion walking down towards Heron Path. The rollator user could walk readily across
the green, but the mobility scooter user could not access the green due to the step. During winter months the rollator gets stuck in the soggy ground. A concrete pathway would be one way of addressing this. Access across from the green to Chapel Lane is via a gate, stiff and particularly awkward to open whilst balancing with a rollator. Equally problematic to both rollator and mobility scooter users is the Heron Path where it has been broken up and lifted by the tree roots. However, the number of benches along the Heron Path is a positive, as is the seating in most of the public spaces in the village, for instance around the library and on the Manor Waste. Indeed both of our volunteer ‘walkers’ advised that in general they find Wendover is already well on the way to being dementia friendly. This was especially borne out when on another day

Catriona Martin, Business Manager at the Junior School, recognised the importance of getting young children passionate and confident about health care: “We find that girls especially tend to think even at this age that they are really bad at Maths and Science… even when they are getting really good results. Bucks County Council has been busy working on some of the mitigation suggestions put forward to spend money available from HS2 Ltd. There have been more suggestions than money to pay for all of them. It is likely that HS2 Ltd and Bucks County Council will organise a local meeting so that the residents of Wendover can study what is being proposed on their behalf. Meanwhile, here is a flavour of some improvements which might eventually come into being: A413 Wendover Cycleway Improvements Most modern considerations of cycleways attempt to separate cyclists from traffic. The best ones separate them from pedestrians, too. The cycleways which already exist to both North and South of Wendover have been identified as being in need of repair so these will have the highest priority. Studies have shown that the major routes A413 in the Aylesbury direction, B4009 in the Tring direction and A413 in the Great Missenden direction are places where serious incidents

involving cyclists have happened in the last 5 years. The road to Great Missenden has little or no provision for cyclists and consequently, the most serious incidents have happened there. Within Wendover there is also scope to improve cycling opportunities for short journeys. Popular destinations include canal, schools, train station, Chiltern Hills, Wendover Woods, Garden Centre, commercial centre including High Street. Noise barriers These are not the infamous noise barriers protecting Wendover from the noise of the HS2 high speed trains but protection from road traffic noise for Wendover, particularly during the construction of the railway, most notably at the portal which will give most noise bother to Chiltern Way Academy just off London Road. Summer? Yes, we too are asking where the glorious rays went too during our season break but this has not stopped us making the most of it. In July we hosted our annual 5-a-side tournament which saw 25 teams, 175 players and many friends and families come down to raise valuable fund for the club. Our
sponsors for this year’s tournament were Grant & Stone – Kitchens & Bathrooms who offered magnificent support to us both prior and on the day. With a new season comes the time for us to look at restoring the clubhouse and preserving its history for new generations. To help to do this we have been working with Aces High to reframe and mount pictures and certificates which had sadly been left to deteriorate in the clubhouse. If you wish to see our 100-year FA affiliation certificate from 1995, team photos from across the years or perhaps you have some photos with members of the club which you would like to show us, then please come down to the clubhouse on any match day Saturday. On the pitch, we hired local Personal Trainer Andrew Tallyn to train our players, and any other willing locals, throughout July and August. These sessions were open and free to everyone during the summer break

Whitchurch Morris Men
I have some sad news to relay. In July, the last surviving founder member of the Side, Mr (Alan) Peter Alderman passed away. In 1948, some of the men who were part of a country dancing group became interested in The Morris. Peter stayed with the Side and danced until the late 1950s. Thereafter, whilst not dancing, he continued to support the Side and met up with us whenever we appeared in the village.

RAF Halton Closure:
Where are we? Where are we going? There are two key players in what happens at the RAF Halton site when it closes – one being the local planning authority Aylesbury Vale District Council (AVDC) and the other being the DIO (Defence Infrastructure Organisation). Both parties appear to be busy planning. In the case of AVDC they are still dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s on the Local Plan. We have to wait until November before we discover if they are still proposing to remove the greenbelt status from the mainsite. The DIO are busy planning not least where will the activity from Halton go and then what could happen to the land. So in this quiet period let us speculate on what the impact on Wendover could be.
the issue around the Clock Tower would need to be considered. Equally if these new residents in Halton are to enjoy the Wendover environment then perhaps the resolution of the parking issue will take on a more urgent hue. Before you say go away and mind your own business, let me remind you that RAF Halton is the major employer in the area. The personnel there spend their money in Wendover and other places rather than Halton. Now that will change with the closure of RAF Halton, but I would suggest that what or who replaces it could equally be a potential customer for Wendover.
It is clear there could be a range of outcomes from an acceptable increase in housing which is well thought out and works both for the local community and area, through to a large area of high density housing leaving we the community to pick up the pieces. Whatever happens, Halton will be the most significantly affected community. All of the land being disposed of is in Halton and just a small element in Aston Clinton. But returning to Wendover, there will be impacts. Let me give you my view.
On that note, let’s talk about housing. I have heard people say that Halton can take whatever Wendover does not commit to do. If it was only that simple. Maybe Aston Clinton, Weston Turville and others feel the same. We will be working to get the best solution for Halton, just as your Parish Council will be doing the same for you. Given my understanding of how the process works I do not believe the ‘powers that be’ believe Halton is a surrogate for Wendover. What we end up with may or may not influence what the District Council allocates to Wendover Firstly Infrastructure. Today people and equally we will have a voice as well. in Halton look to Wendover for basic infrastructure – health centre capacity, However, Wendover faces a couple of dentists, secondary school places, shops other real challenges. Firstly the service and restaurants/pubs. The fear is any housing will be released. It is likely a large development in Halton will have a developer will see what was achieved knock-on impact on Wendover. Given the on the hospital site and want to emulate close links we have, this is a reasonable it on the service housing in Wendover. fear. However it is in both Wendover’s and Secondly if HS2 goes ahead I can envisage Halton’s interests to ensure that basic them trying to make money out of selling infrastructure is put in place when new for housing the land they have acquired housing developments are started. Now to build the green tunnel. AVDC have mentioned that Halton could be a ‘Garden Village’. If it worked then All in all a world of uncertainty - not least this would mean that basic infrastructure of which is that Bucks County Council requirements may be funded by central and AVDC are both seeking to be unitary government. authorities. That means they would have all the powers – planning, transport, Secondly for sure there will be an increase education and so on. You may have views in traffic. If Wendover has a problem today on who you trust, however that is why I then it would make sense to try and sort think we as separate communities need it out before any large scale development to work together on a equal basis. It is in in Halton made the whole system lock our mutual interest to become allies. up. Having more housing will drive up Brian Thompson traffic movements. Started in 1975, the Gothia Cup, staged in Gothenburg, Sweden, is the most wonderful opportunity for teams to show what they can do against serious competition. It is the world’s largest and most international youth football tournament. Each year, during one week in July, around 1700 teams from 80 nations take part, and they play 4500 games on 110 fields. The competition has a group stage, playoffs and, of course, finals. It is a meeting place for the world’s youth, irrespective of religion, skin colour or nationality, with football as the common denominator. The team played 8 games, three of them on the final day, so they had to work very hard to win their prize. To see a short video from this year’s event, go to https://www. gothiacup.se/about-the-gothia-cup/ What next? They have just left John Colet School after completing their GCSEs and have been chosen to join Wycombe Wanderers Academy for the next two years as Football Apprentices. Watch this space!

Local Face: Rev Sally Moring It’s good to be able to introduce myself as a new ‘local face’ to Wendover. I am the Reverend Sally Moring and will begin my new role as the Vicar of St Mary’s, Wendover and St Michael and All Angels, Halton on Wednesday 6 September. On that evening, I will be instituted, inducted and installed, all quite a mouthful which means that the Bishop of Buckingham, the Rt Rev’d Alan Wilson, will give me his licence to minister in Wendover and Halton, and then I will be installed into the church. Each church has a patron and in St Mary’s case it’s the Lord Chancellor (who just happens to be our local MP David Lidington!). His representative was part of the appointing panel. Originally from the Northeast of England - my mother still lives near Durham - I have previously been a teacher and run a community project for women and their families. I am moving to Wendover from Hayes in West London where I have been Vicar of St Edmund of Canterbury Church, Hayes, for the last 8 years. I have also been involved in the training of curates (newly ordained women and men in the first three years of their ministry) and in the local schools as a governor. It’s been a good 8 years but we are ready for a new chapter in our lives. I say ‘we’ because
I am moving with my husband Paul (who works in manufacturing) and our adult children James and Sarah, both of whom are going into their final years of study. James is training to be ordained next year and Sarah is studying Pharmaceutical Science at Lincoln University with an interest in science communication. We are all looking forward to living in Wendover and getting to know that area, especially putting on our walking boots and exploring the beautiful countryside surrounding the village. We enjoy good food and wine so will be frequenting some of the local pubs and restaurants. We are also looking forward to getting to know many of you in the different places that people gather together...not just in St Mary’s and St Michael’s.
I hope that I will be able to do that as the new Vicar of Wendover and Halton; you’ll see me in the JUST shop from time to time. I’ll be around in the local schools and youth centre, at Lindengate meeting service users and volunteers, at SAGES and other gatherings for the older members of the community and in the various homes in the area for those who are no longer able to live on their own. I’m also looking forward to working with the congregations of the two beautiful churches, continuing to put St Mary’s at the heart of Wendover’s community, bringing God’s love to you all and being involved in the times of celebration in your lives at baptisms and weddings, as well as being there when life gets hard or sad. In Halton, together we’ll work out what it is to be a parish church in a very small village and where the RAF base When instituted by the Bishop, he will give is closing...there are exciting opportunities me his licence, saying, “Receive this cure ahead. of souls, which is both yours and mine”... in other words, “be part of the people of Please say hello when you see me around this benefice, show them who Jesus Christ Wendover and Halton, and be there on 6 is through the way you live and are, and be September if you can as I pray for you all in there for them in times of joy and sorrow.” this time of transition for us.

Matters Arising Wendover Parish Council Page
View from the Chair
It’s been raining as I settle to write this. I’ve just driven past the Parish’s latest bus shelter and it was very much in use. It’s the one at the end of Chiltern Road, and come rain or shine it’s a big hit. It’s little improvements to the lives of our Parishioners like this that remind me of the reason I’m a Parish Councillor. Wendover Parish Councillors get the chance to make significant improvements to Village life and in my time on the Council we’ve fenced the Heron Path, put a new roof on the Clock Tower, resurfaced the Manor Waste, extended the parking at the Witchell and converted our streetlights to energy saving LED. While doing these and many other necessary improvements, we’ve also developed a first class professional staff that keeps Wendover looking good and ensures our markets, our allotments and our Christmas events are popular and successful. We’re working on delivering new, to us anyway, services to Wendover such as cutting grass on highway verges and keeping rights of way passable. In the near future the maintenance of the Heron Path is likely to devolve to the Parish Council.
In considering a new service or project Councillors need to be sure that it is “right for Wendover”, outcomes should always be “good enough for Wendover.” Good enough for Wendover should be very good indeed. Tom Walsh, Chairman
Parish Council Meeting Tuesday 5 September 7.30pm St Anne’s Hall
Councillor Vacancies
If you are looking for the opportunity to improve your locale and influence policy locally and in wider local government, join your Parish Council. We have two vacancies. If you can spare 5 or 6 hours a month you can make a real difference to the quality of local life. Don’t worry, you don’t have to be elected. Just fill in a co-option form from the Clock Tower and we’ll do the rest.

Surveys
The result of the Tree Survey shows there is support for more trees in Wendover funded by the Parish Council via Council Tax. The current survey on the adoption of the Heron Path closed on Monday 21 August. The next survey on the topic of giving grants will run from Friday 1 September to Thursday 16 November.
Questions and Complaints
The most important thing is to get your queries to the right people. The full list for AVDC and Transport for Bucks (BCC) service areas are on our website and in the Clock Tower Window, but these may be useful: • AVDC - Planning, Waste Bins, Street Sweeping, Licensing and Environmental Problems. • Transport for Bucks (TfB) - Highways, Potholes, Drains and Lights on main roads. Please use their complaint lines. The more of us that do, the greater chance of action.
