Wendover Woods this summer holiday catering space available for visitors to enjoy The Forestry Commission has been planning to redevelop the facilities at Wendover Woods for at least 10 years. They are investing £4.5 million.

Regular visitors will have noticed that the car park has been moved and its capacity increased from 220 to 500 spaces including the installation of an up to date ANPR camera car park management system. Discovery Pass members still enjoy free parking.

Foundling Hospital. Jane King will recount the struggle of Thomas Coram at the beginning of the 18th century to establish the Foundling Hospital - Britain’s first and only home solely for illegitimate children and how the babies left there were brought up. The CQC recently carried out a comprehensive inspection visit and we were very pleased to be given an overall Good rating. The key questions at the inspection were rated as follows: Are services safe? – Good; Are services effective? – Good; Are services caring? – Good; Are services responsive? – Good; Are services well-led? – Outstanding. Training practice Wendover is a training practice; this means that we frequently have GP registrars attached to us. These are fully qualified doctors who are undergoing specialist training in general practice. From 1 August 2018, Drs Angus Perry, Laura Gush and Femi Aranamolate will be joining us as GP registrars for periods of up to 12 months. We bid farewell to Dr Sonia Hussain who moves on to her next post at the same time, and wish her well. From time to time we also have other learners attached to the practice, including nurses in training and medical students. These will always have a named supervisor who will oversee their work, and we will also make clear who they are. Our car park The car park at Wendover Health Centre is private property, currently made available free of charge for our patients and staff. Population growth and changes in the way services are organised across the three Westongrove sites will result in continued growing demand for parking places at the Health Centre. At all times when we are open, we ask that only those who are bone fide visitors to the Health Centre use our car park. If you can walk or park elsewhere that would be very welcome. Please only use designated parking places, and display your parking badge if parking in the disabled spaces. Times when we are closed The Health Centre will be closed on Saturday 25 August and Monday 27 August for the bank holiday. We will close at 1pm on Wednesday 12 September for staff training. This space paid for by Wendover Health Centre.

HS2 In a well attended public meeting on Thursday 5 July, Eiffage Kier (EK), who are the contractor designing and building HS2 past Wendover, unveiled their designs for two viaducts and the Green Tunnel that HS2 Ltd think should be built in our AONB.

HS2 Anti-HS2 demo The impromptu demo came out of the meeting on Thursday 5 July at St Mary’s when the HS2 contractors Eiffage Kier showed pictures of the ugly viaduct they’ve designed to cross the A413 at Small Dean: the audience was horrified and there were pleas for a mined tunnel.

HS2 will carry out investigations into the services (gas, electricity, water, cable etc) running below ground near the entrance to Boswells. There will be no disruption to any services during these works. Works are scheduled to start on Monday 30 July and investigations are expected to last no longer than five days. Normal working hours will be Monday to Friday 8am - 6pm. This will mean delays to travel as the traffic lights will mean journeys taking longer. The lights will be closely monitored. There will be some noise but only during these times. Every effort will be made to minimise the duration of the works.

AUGUST 1918
Having successfully resisted the massive German offensives on the Western Front of March-June 1918, British and French forces made a major counter-attack beginning on 8 August. This became known as the Second Battle of Amiens. The Germans had 27,000 casualties on the first day alone and were forced back eight miles to their Hindenburg Line defences. The German Commander, Erich Ludendorff, called it the Black Day of the German army. In Russia, Lenin survived an assassination attempt. Allied forces, including British, American and Japanese troops, landed in Archangel, Vladivostok and Baku to oppose the Germans and Bolsheviks. An outbreak of Spanish flu affected both German and Allied soldiers.

In August 1918 two Wendover men were killed in France. Private Arthur James Dorrell of the Royal Berkshire Regiment died of wounds on 26 August aged 20. Arthur was the son of James and Sarah Dorrell who lived in the London Road. Arthur, also known as Jimmy, and his brother Harold were among the first to enlist in the Ox and Bucks Light Infantry in the early days of the war. In January 1918, Arthur was wounded and sent home to hospital in Tring suffering from septic poisoning. Soon after being back on the front line he was again wounded and died of his injuries. 4 Pound Street then and now
Corporal George Buckley Thompson of the London Scottish Regiment was killed in France on 31 August aged 38. George had already been wounded in 1916. In September 1918 the Bucks Advertiser and Aylesbury News paid tribute to him with the news of his death-“Mr W Thompson of Pound Street Wendover has received official information that his brother Corporal George Buckley Thompson was killed in action on August 29th. Deceased who was in his 39th year went to the National School and finished his education in Aylesbury, proceeded at the age of 19 to London. He was an apprentice to a firm of drapers and rapidly rose to a position of trust and

Prison of War fund was well attended and the weather reported as all that could be desired. At the Parish Council meeting Mr Blake said he believed there were a number of men who would like to form a pig club. He suggested that the Clerk should take the name of those willing to form such a club, in order that definite action might follow. At the Court of Petty Sessions Private George Bull pleaded not guilty to a charge of unlawfully taking wild birds at Wendover on August 8th. Local policeman P.C. Bryant said he saw the defendant sitting behind a heap of Churlock in a field between Halton and Wendover with a large double net which opened and shut by means of a cord operated from behind. Inside the net were two linnets and one lark, and at each corner was a small cage containing a call bird, there being three linnets and a goldfinch. In a larger cage were three freshly caught linnets and a bullfinch. Witness liberated the freshly caught birds. When asked for an explanation defendant said that he had been working in a field, and another man asked him to look after the nets while he went away for a little while. The Chairman said there could be no question about it that the defendant was bird catching. The law for the protection of wild birds must be carried out. He would have to pay a fine of 20s and the nets found in his possession would be confiscated. Wendover Dementia Action Alliance Lindengate Memory Pathways

It runs on the second and last Fridays of the month from 11am to 2pm, and provides a range of gardening and other activities, to help stimulate the senses. It’s been an exciting time for Lindengate’s Memory Pathways service. In May, the allotment gained four accessible raised beds made by Lindengate gardeners (see photo, right.) These beds are abundant with vegetables, promising a bountiful harvest.
June saw the service celebrate its second birthday with a Hawaiian themed party. As part of the RAF 100 Centenary celebrations, RAF Halton visited Lindengate in July and linked up with Year 4 pupils from Wendover CE Junior School, where they organised sensory activities for the children to take part in. The children, who are trained as Memory Pathways Dates 2018, all Fridays: ‘dementia friends’, brought wind chimes 17th (note change from 10th) & 31st they had made for Lindengate and Memory August Pathways. A few of the children spent a September 14th & 28th lively time talking with the gardeners. October 12th & 26th Memory Pathways provides activities for people with memory loss and dementia

RAF Halton Wendover CE Junior School are at the way they teach or instruct. given A Taster Of The Sciences Wendover CE Junior School visited RAF Halton in June to take part in a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, (STEM) Cool Aeronautics day of activities. These events are now a big part of Station routine with museum volunteers and STEM ambassadors from Halton and other Stations taking groups through activities designed to stimulate their love of all things scientific and the principles of flight. They made electronic flying discs, a model rocket, went on the flight simulators, learned the basics of Morse Code and visited the Halton Aero Club where they got to see and sit inside a light aircraft. Staff at RAF Halton are determined to put 1000 children through the experience to coincide with RAF100. The instructional staff said they gained a lot from the experience of being a STEM Ambassador as it gives them a different look
Sgt Darren Culley from Logistics and Supply Training Squadron, said: “I absolutely love these events, it makes me a better Learning Morse Code instructor and if the children take away just one thing then I have done my job.” He recalled a child saying she wanted to be like ‘someone’ and when he asked her who, she said ‘you’, which made him feel as if he had succeeded in being a role model to her. All in all the day was a complete success with teachers praising the staff here for their patience and professionalism. Ryanair Pilot Jonathon Paris lectured each group, taking them through a pilot’s eye view from the cockpit and the different lights and signs on a runway. The children were
most animated when he explained the use of a windsock on a RAF Station or civilian airport and how an aircraft is brought to a stand-still with the aid of a bungee type band. Jonathon, 31 years of age, learned to fly at a commercial school in Bournemouth and still flies European routes but in his spare time he works with the ATC as a ground instructor. Chelsey Rose, Year 6 Leader at Wendover Junior School, emailed organiser, Bill McGrath, saying: “Thank you for our STEM day on Thursday. The children absolutely loved it and many commented that it was the best trip they had ever been on! We have also had positive comments from parents as the children did not stop talking about it once they got home, so a big thank you from me for your support in allowing it to happen. I am sure the Year 6 team would be keen to take the current year 5s in the Autumn term if you have any dates left.”

I’m seeking a meeting with Nus Ghani, the Transport Minister with direct responsibility for HS2, to talk about the proposed design of viaducts across London Road and the impact both on local people and on traffic flows. I’m in touch with the Parish Council about this. On the future of RAF Halton, the MoD does seem to be making an effort to talk to local parishes and others about their plans. Halton Parish Council have told me that they’ll update me after they meet ministry officials and see whether we need a Ministerial meeting. The Department of Transport is expected to announce shortly its preferred corridor for the East/West expressway that will complement the new Oxford to Cambridge rail route. Two of the three options would take the road through the north of Aylesbury Vale. The southern corridor envisages a route that would skirt Aylesbury to the north of the town. This decision is important because it will almost certainly determine

Wendover Family represents Local Schools at Interment of Dr Stephen Hawking Professor Stephen Hawking’s ashes were interred at Westminster Abbey in June 2018. In May, a public ballot opened allowing 1,000 members of the public the opportunity to attend the service. At the Service of Thanksgiving for the life of Professor Stephen Hawking, 103 schools from around the world were represented, including Buckinghamshire schools Wendover CE Junior School, the John Colet School, Wendover and Sir Henry Floyd Grammar School in Aylesbury. The head teachers of the three schools had given a special dispensation to Wendover siblings Georgina, Amelia and Christopher Glazier to attend the event with their mother Ben Glazier; Georgina Glazier, Wendover CE Junior School; Angie and father Ben. Amelia Glazier, John Colet School Wendover; and Chris
The Glazier children were there to represent Buckinghamshire schools at a once in a lifetime event and will be reporting back to their schools that they had the opportunity to meet Astronaut Tim Peake, Nobel Laureate Professor Kip Thorne, science superhero Professor Brian Cox and science writer and videographer Hashem Al-Ghaili, whose Facebook page @ScienceNaturePage has 24 million followers and has just passed 8 billion post likes.

On 13 June I boarded the 55 bus at 10.50am from Aylesbury bus station. It did not stop at the designated bay, thus leaving some passengers stranded. The driver took off with a jolt, sending a lady flying before she could sit down. This is a common occurrence with Arriva bus drivers and has happened to me and other elderly passengers. He went through a traffic light at amber just as it was turning red. Are bus drivers exempt from stopping at amber/red lights as this is also a frequent occurrence? He was talking on his mobile phone throughout the trip and when I pointed out to him he was putting the passengers at risk, he said “if you don’t like it, get off the bus” and tried to order me off the bus, continuing his private conversation on the phone. This is just one of many incidents that I have witnessed over the 8 years of using the buses and they are getting worse. Mr Clarke says (in July’s edition, page 20) that the air traffic into Luton is “continuous and can affect sleep, enjoying the garden etc”. If you look at the actual facts I cannot believe that he is living in the Wendover area. (Editor’s note: Mr Clarke lives in Aston Clinton, rather than Wendover.) Luton has had, in the 12 months to February 2018, a total of 135,105 air traffic
movements, so 370 a day. Given that only half of these will be either inbounds or outbounds, we would only see 185 over the local area or about 10 an hour. These aircraft largely pass over Wendover at 5000-10,000 feet (1-2 miles), so I would be very surprised if they caused lack of sleep or drove someone from the garden. L Bailey, Wendover

an opportunity to get improvements to all aspects of the infrastructure. Since then there has been continuing engagement and some new feedback. Most of the topics on which initial thoughts and other comment were sought have had a Halton element. The main points at the present time are summarised below:•Any Housing, with a very strong emphasis on affordable provision of all kinds, should go to the Halton Site. • Pressure on schools should be relieved by expanding provision at Halton (Secondary as well as Primary). •It is imperative that the leisure and sports facilities at Halton should be kept and expanded for the use of residents in the Parish, District and Region. As an example, there was reference to the demand for football pitches and the severe impacts on the viability of the clubs concerned if Halton facilities were no longer available. •A need for expanded facilities for local organisations to meet and for social interaction both at Wendover and Halton. •New health centre and suitable complementary facilities needed which could be located at Halton. •Existing buildings and heritage assets (such as the Trenchard Museum) should be kept at Halton and used imaginatively, and where possible, to create jobs. •Expansion of Halton seen as an opportunity to improve and maintain all aspects of transport infrastructure such as the need to improve safety, and, where possible, expand capacity. This is likely to involve a range of measures including, as an example, improving the junction of the B4009/Tring Hill •Seek imaginative solutions to parking issues in Wendover, which are perceived by some to affect local businesses, and which will get worse if Halton expands. • Current traffic flows through the Town from West to East have a significant impact on businesses/residents/visitors at peak times. Calendar Competition “Sights, Scenes and Events in our Community” is the theme of this year’s competition for publication in the Library’s Wendover Calendar 2019. Charity Golf Day The date for this year’s Charity Golf Day at Whiteleaf Golf Club is 20 September. This has been an extremely successful and enjoyable event over the last three years and through your generosity has raised considerable funds for FOWL. Tribute: Gill Coole Gill passed away 25 May 2017 due to cancer. On 5 April 2017 she had celebrated 20 years of marriage to David. She lived in Wendover all her married life. She left three children, two step children and two grandchildren. In August 2017, half her ashes were scattered at one of Gill’s favourite places - Trewent Point, Pembrokeshire. Gill’s friends and colleagues noted her love of bright colours and ever-present smile in their tributes. Sue Sharp said: “Gill was beautiful through and through. A dear friend, support to so many vulnerable young people and a stunning lady. Miss you so much Gill - will never forget your vibrant clothes and sense of compassion and humour.” Some also noted her baking skill - her coffee and walnut cake, bread and butter pudding and chocolate cake all featured in tributes. Gill was a careers adviser with Connexions/ Adviza. One of her colleagues penned the following extract about her:
“Just in the last 5 years at Connexions and Adviza, Gill worked with over 800 young people, some of whom would have been experiencing the most difficult of circumstances, and moved at least 200 of them into new opportunities. Gill showed immense empathy and an ability to recognise the individual needs of each young person she worked with; she helped them address these barriers and achieve positive outcomes when previously they had very limited life chances.” At her funeral, a young person who had read about her death in the newspaper attended because he wanted to pay his respects and tell her family: “Gill was amazing.... she saved my life! I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for her; she went out of her way to help me when my own family did nothing”. In this instance,
Gill helped the client sort out his living arrangements when he was made homeless, helped him apply for many jobs and took him to the interview which he then got and it enabled him to finally move forward positively and successfully in his life. He is still working and said his life was turned around by the committed attitude and unflinching encouragement of Gill. This was the type of Careers Coach Gill was, all young people were important, no matter their background; in fact, she believed those who didn’t have much support at home needed more of our time as workers. She believed, with the right type of support and careers guidance, all young people could be successful. On 7 March 2018 Gill posthumously won the National Career Adviser/Coach of the Year 2018 award. David collected the award on her behalf. For a video tribute, search ‘Gill Coole’ on YouTube.

Local Faces: JCS Head Students It was a bit quiet around the John Colet School campus for the last half of the Summer term since both year 11 and year 13 students sat their exams and then left school. Newly elected Head Students Jack and Siobhan with Deputies Isabella and Sam took up their responsibilities; helping to look after their fellow year 12s and lower school Sam Mohammed students. Sharing leadership and communication skills across the school as part of an aim to teach pupils vital life skills and help them become more employable later in life. This includes a new future focus scheme where speakers (including Oxbridge students) come to talk to pupils about future career paths and opportunities. 3. Specific roles for prefects eg, sport or technology to increase applicants for leadership roles and a new house system, including House Captains, rolling out across the school will encourage

Lindengate A visit to Lindengate Fair
this significant donation of over £34k from the LEADER fund (LEADER, a rural help fund, could only fund a maximum of 80% of the pathways).
Andrew Hough, Buckinghamshire MCF (Masonic Charitable Fund) representative and Mike Clanfield, Provincial Grand Charity Steward, are pictured (above, right) with members of the Lindengate charity during their visit to the Lindengate fair recently, after the MCF awarded the charity £4000. Lindengate (www.lindengate.org.uk) is a mental health and wellbeing charity in Wendover which offers specialised gardening activities to assist mental wellbeing, boost self-esteem and social inclusion. The charity has received assistance from Buckinghamshire Masons to upgrade the facilities and pathways there. In May 2019 there should be the regular election of Councillors for Wendover. I would encourage anyone to stand and to try to make a difference. From Councillors to the Library and from Lindengate to the Community Car, Wendover life depends on volunteers. Sports Clubs, Youth Groups, the Library, the Churchyard and various charities all rely on the energy and the ideas of the willing. All of the community organisations are shorthanded. The World Cup makes me think about the difference between being a spectator or a player. I’m old enough that people have asked me “did you see the 1966 Final?” I have to say “no I didn’t”. I was eleven in 1966 and I was playing football, not watching it. It’s quite fun to watch sport but it’s eminently better and more satisfying to play. The people who volunteer for the Community are the players, they get all of the benefits of achievement and teamwork and they influence the future of Wendover. Give it a try! Find a few spare hours to give to your community, just step off the terrace and become a player. The Parish Council or any of these organisations will welcome you with open arms. Tom Walsh, Chairman
