Christmas is coming and the geese are getting fat, Time for the credit card, to pay without contact. If you haven’t got a credit card, cash will have to do, If you’ve got no cash to spend, oh dear! Poor you!
Sometimes it seems that Christmas is an endless round of spending, spending and more spending. The presents that we buy for people who already have everything they could ever need or want. The phenomenal amount of food shopping that seems to be needed in the run up to Christmas. And the little extras we buy because everything has to be just perfect. And why do we do all this anyway? Is it to earn our favour with those we give to, or to get something wonderful back from them? Or is it to impress the people we feed or just to keep up appearances? But actually of course Christmas isn’t really about the food we prepare or the gifts we give, or the people we impress. The reason for the season is the gift that God wants to give us, the gift of knowing him and his love for us. We celebrate Christmas because one
day two thousand years ago a tiny baby was born in squalor. He turned out to be God himself come to share our humanity, and to live the joys and the difficulties of this world with ordinary people like you and me. He came to teach and to heal, to challenge injustice and ultimately he was prepared to give up his life for his friends, so that we ordinary human beings could know the wonderful gift of God’s amazing love for us. We do not need to give God anything to receive this. We do not need to impress God so that he loves us. He already does, just as we are. That is why he came into the world as a baby, and that is what Christmas is really all about. To remember and celebrate the love we have been given, and to receive that love from God and to pass it on to one another.

DECEMBER 1918 The signing of the Armistice on 11 November 1918 was only the first step in tightening the grip of the Allies on Germany. British, American and French forces advanced to the Rhine. The British took possession of the Cologne bridgehead; American forces occupied Coblenz; and the French held the area around Frankfurt. The Armistice brought an end to hostilities, but it did not mean that the war was over. Until a Peace Treaty was signed there was always the chance that fighting might break out once more. The German troops had retreated back to their depots still carrying their rifles. They had been greeted as heroes and garlanded with flowers. President Wilson of the United States arrived in Paris for the Peace negotiations. In Britain the Prime Minister, Lloyd George, decided to consolidate his position by holding a General Election – the first for eight years – and his Coalition Party of Conservatives and Liberals won a landslide victory.

It is a unique place with a unique history and its future development has inspired a group of local residents to come together to form the Halton Development Community Interest Company (HDCIC). A CIC is a special type of limited company which purely exists to benefit the community rather than private shareholders. Recently formed, the HDCIC has been busy engaging with many stakeholders across local and national government, forming a Vision and starting to plan. We want to ensure the Community has a real say in how this special place is developed and aim to deliver innovative housing, employment, health and leisure to those who live and work there, all wrapped up within its unique heritage and surroundings.

We were not used to such deer in Wendover then, only the slow moving muntjac. I have seen them in the woods since Claire Redrup, Community Fundraising and think that they have moved in to stay. The old passenger footbridge is neglected and invaded by magnolias. I shall try to discover Chiltern Railways’ intentions. Christmas Celebration Event Wednesday 5 December, 4-7pm Wendover Parish Council has organised a wonderful Christmas Celebration Event for everyone to enjoy starting at 4pm on Wednesday 5 December. Proceeds from the event are going to Wendover Sparrowhawks Ladies’ Netball Club.
Eating and Drinking Hot refreshments will be available, so no need to worry about feeding the family before heading out. These will include a Kings Farm Shop BBQ, Monsta Pizza and roasted chestnuts, toasted chocolate marshmallows and mulled wine cart. Hot drinks will also be available from The Coffee Stop along with yummy cakes. All Wendover’s usual hostelries and restaurants will be open.

Wendover Choral Society Christmas in Dresden
Saturday 8 December, 7.30pm, St Mary’s Church, Wendover Peter Bassano will conduct a magical evening of inspiring, Baroque music to celebrate the Christmas Story by contemporaries Schütz, Monteverdi, Gabrieli and the conductor’s ancestor, Giovanni Bassano. Schütz twice visited Venice, widely regarded at the time as the music capital of the world, to study with them. Wendover Choral Society is excited to be joined by eight brilliant young soloists from The Royal College of Music, including two counter-tenors, as well as The Equale Baroque Ensemble including original instruments e.g. sackbuts. They’re aiming to raise a minimum of £5K so would like as many people as possible to don their winter walking boots and join them! HS2 You may well be noticing that HS2, as a project, is getting a fair amount of press coverage lately. Not much of it is good. The press have woken up to the fact that HS2 is ill conceived, poorly managed and likely to be scarily expensive. Confidence in a successful outcome for the project is hard to find when we talk to parliamentarians too. Alternative transport projects are being promoted actively as MPs realise that more people can benefit from much lower impact schemes that solve real problems in the existing transport infrastructure. Nash Lee An example of the impractical and intransigent HS2 ltd approach to the project can be seen at Nash Lee. For over five years HS2 ltd have insisted that a haul road design of unbelievable incompetence was to be built. Any experienced engineer could look at the proposed layout and see it was too narrow, too near houses, the dump trucks couldn’t get around the corners and it needed a controlled crossing of Nash Lee Rd.
EK the contractors took a very short time in dismissing the plan. Their solution is to run most of the haul on the “trace”, that is, the actual line of the railway, and to do away with much of the haul road. Where they do need the haul road they have widened it, smoothed out the bends and they take it over Nash Lee Rd on a temporary bridge. The result is that, after a totally unnecessary five years of distress, landowners, householders and motorists look like they will be spared HS2 Ltd’s planned chaos. The Mined Tunnel proposal WPC has received, through David Lidington MP, two letters from ministers with regards to our project. Nusrat Ghani, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department for Transport, has obviously looked at all of the points that we raised when we met with her recently. She generally pushes back at our proposal but, importantly, has requested that OTB, our tunnelling specialists, furnishes her department with their detailed workings out. We’re taking that as a positive. Both
Nusrat Ghani and another letter from Chris Grayling offer little to encourage us but, and this is to me disappointing, they both appear to confuse Wendover’s scheme with legacy tunnelling proposals that came forward during the early days of the petitioning process. Hopefully direct access to OTB’s ideas will clarify things for them. HS2 Engagement HS2 ltd have been running drop in events for Wendover. I’d be very interested to hear what Wendover thinks of their efforts. Let me know, will you? Your Letters I know that hundreds of you have written to your MP and Ministers to object to the Small Dean viaduct and to ask for a Mined Tunnel instead. Our indoor meeting at Gt Missenden Memorial Centre is on Tuesday 18 December at 7.45pm when local naturalist John Tyler will talk about the River Thame, the ‘Forgotten River.’ Admission is £4 - come and enjoy excellent photography, new insights and an amusing style. Draft Neighbourhood Plan
A draft version of the Wendover Neighbourhood Plan was set before the Wendover Parish Council in closed session at their meeting on Tuesday 6 November. It was agreed that with amendments, it will be officially adopted as the Final Draft Plan in the December meeting and approved for public consultation. It will then be available for review at http:// wendoverneighbourhoodplan.co.uk. This Draft Plan is bringing the reality of a made plan much closer and this is the final opportunity for comment. The Public Consultation Period will run from Monday 10 December to Friday 15 February. This includes the Christmas and New Year Season so if you are busy, before, during or after, you can plan your moment to review local plans for the future.

Youth Wendover Youth Centre was founded by Diana Riley in 1986 and was our President until her sad death in 2007. At that time Diana's husband, Colin Riley, accepted the invitation of the Trustees to become President of the Youth Centre. Both Diana and Colin have contributed considerably to the Centre since its foundation and transition to a community run organisation when BCC funding was withdrawn from local youth provision. As a Centre we wouldn’t be here working with the young people of Wendover if it were not for their hard work, vision and dedication. Over the last few months we have taken one of our side rooms, which was a very dark and gloomy place, and turned it into a place of colour and vibrancy, to make it a real place for young people, to reflect, relax and refuel. It’s a place that we can use for one-to-one sessions, crafts and creativity, Worth it (self-esteem) courses, a place for pastoral care, and a
place to play games, interact and doodle on our special wall. This newly decorated room has been named in honour of Diana and Colin to recognise their love and hard work for the Centre. On 1 November, Colin and his family came to officially open the Riley Room. We also welcomed young people, volunteers, Youth Centre trustees, parish councillors and trustees from the Lionel Abel-Smith Trust, because not only were we recognising the Rileys, we wanted to thank and recognise the Trust and the Parish Council for all their financial support over the years. Parish Council Chairman Tom Walsh unveiled a small plaque in recognition of their support. We had a lovely celebration together and would like to thank all the volunteers that worked very hard on the new and improved Riley room, we are excited to see what the next 30 years have in store.

RAF Halton Following a successful submission to the Royal Aeronautical Society, RAF Halton near Wendover in Buckinghamshire, has been awarded an Aeronautical Heritage Award for providing excellence of training within technical, medical and administrative fields. The award is in the form of a plaque that will take pride of place on the exterior of the James McCudden Flight Heritage Centre. A group from the Royal Aeronautical Society awarded the plaque including Air Commodore (Retd) Bill Tyack, Chairman of the Awards Committee, Mr Scott Philips, Head of Regional affairs and Mr Peter Davidson, Head of Historical Group. This is the 20th plaque donated by the Society and Air Commodore Tack said how special it was to be presented to one of the three pillars of the RAF with such an important history. Group Captain Wilson, Station Commander, thanked the Society for their donation on
behalf of past Station Commanders and commented on the importance of not only recognising Halton’s contribution to technical trades, but to medical and administration, too.
During WWII RAF Halton trained thousands of men and women volunteers and conscripts in skills urgently needed by operational squadrons and maintenance units. Meanwhile, Princess Mary’s RAF Hospital was treating patients from all over the world and pioneering new treatments, playing a major role in research for treatments of burns, kidney failure and contributing to original work of flight safety and aviation medicine.

Tribute: Pat Smith the organiser of the London team (and who arranged to be sitting next to her at the after match dinner!). Her family remember a kind and gregarious woman with never a bad word to say about anyone, who was infectiously funny and told some amazing stories. Her only fault being an ability to kill off pets that the family was looking after, with a goldfish and a hamster hastened to an early demise and a school tortoise having run away to avoid the same fate. In her later years Pat was diagnosed with Alzheimers and for the last 6 years of her life she was cared for at home by her husband and family with the support of some wonderful carers from Carewatch. She died on 23 October at Stoke Mandeville Hospital. Pat is already sorely missed by husband Ron and her children and grandchildren.

Local Face: Mal Williams keyboard and guitar so they complement each other well. She has occasionally played for Roman Catholic Services and is very happy to play for Churches Together in Wendover Services, notably the Praise services.
Marilyn Daykin was born and grew up in Levens, Cumbria and only reached Wendover by a circuitous route. Her uncle played saxophone in a band and she “entertained” her grandfather by bashing the piano in time honoured infant fashion so she started lessons a month before her fifth birthday. By the age of seven her interest in learning the piano was waning but her father told her the story of Robert the Bruce and the Spider never giving up on its web so she didn’t. In fact she has always been able to pick up a tune and play without music and can transpose as necessary. She is also blessed with perfect pitch. This helped her to win the local music festival in Kendal, Cumbria at the age of 13. She never looked back after that. She could always play the latest pop tunes by ear which made her very popular. She also passed all the usual piano exams and diplomas and eventually took an Open University degree. Music was always around her but she trained as a primary school teacher so she taught everything.

Marilyn became involved with youth work in Skelmersdale and as a result was set up on a blind date with David Williams. He was in the RAF and was posted to Cyprus for three years so they started corresponding. He misspelt her name and thereafter she became Mal. Yes, reader, she married him and joined him on various postings including Cyprus and Berlin where she taught in Forces Schools. Eventually they moved to Wendover and Mal joined the Free Church at about the same time as Ruth Bottoms came as Minister, and she was invited to play the organ, alternating with Gordon Crown. She continues to this day. The current minister, Rev Remco, plays
David died in 2000 but Mal enjoyed living in Wendover and now played for Kercher School of Dance so she stayed and now in retirement she is able to indulge in various craft hobbies and expanding her horizons with travel. She has always knitted but has now branched out into embroidery and painting as well as joining Oxford Scribes - a calligraphy group. She was fortunate to find a left -handed teacher and is now the goto person for inscribing books, poppy wreaths etc whenever asked. Mal joined the craft group started by Janet Dimishky. Their work was displayed in the JUST window for the Armistice Centenary and Mal wrote the labels. All are welcome to the craft group which meets approximately fortnightly on Wednesdays in Wendover Christian Centre.

They say that pride is a sin but surely that can’t be right because it’s Christmas that always makes me particularly proud of Wendover. The way people rally around for the Christmas lights switch on. The way the decorations sparkle, the way the shop windows glow. Whether your Christmas is religious or secular, low key or full on, you can rely on the Parish Council, community organisations, the shopkeepers, the churches and the pubs and restaurants to deliver a Christmas just for you. So thank you to everyone who joins in and makes Wendover’s Christmas something that we can all be proud of. We’re going to have a happy Christmas but I need a favour from you all. Some of our neighbours find Christmas and indeed Winter quite challenging. Can you keep a lookout for them, and help out if you can? Then we can all have a great Wendover Christmas. The clocks have turned back, the nights are longer, and the days are shorter. It’s the
season we tend to stay indoors to avoid the weather, but we should spare a thought for some of the more vulnerable members of our community – the elderly. It’s important to make sure that your elderly neighbours are OK when temperatures start to drop, especially those who are housebound, or who may not have family to pay them regular visits.
