Christmas Lights Event

Many thanks again to Wendover Parish Council for the Christmas Event (Wednesday 5 December). Harpenden Building Society sponsored the big tree once again and pupils of Wendover CE Junior School made the decorations, with Lily Lapham winning the prize for the most ingenious decoration, illustrated! Thanks to Wendover Youth Centre’s volunteers. Congratulations to JUST who won the Best Dressed Window competition this year. Details of CribFest winners are on page 13. Ben Moseby of Mix96 brought along the Mix Monster to switch on the big Christmas tree lights.

Lionel Abel-Smith Trust

The Trust was established in 1977 when Lionel Abel-Smith, then Lord of the Manor of Wendover, gave to the village a number of properties in Pound Street. His wish was that the rental income should be used to support organisations and individuals in Wendover. Over the years, more than £1.5 million has been awarded in grants and loans. The Trustees will hold their 41st Annual Meeting on Wednesday 3 April 2019 to consider grant applications from individuals and organisations from within the parish of Wendover and the Moor Park Estate.

National Theatre Connections

Allstars Theatre Company, Allstars Academy will be performing Flesh by Rob Drummond at Court Theatre Tring on 8 and 9 February as part of National Theatre Connections – a nationwide celebration of new plays for young people.

Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity’s Midnight Walk began in 2010 with 550 ladies walking up to 12 miles and raised £65,000. By 2018 the event had opened up to include men and has become their largest fundraising event. Over the past nine years the walk has raised over £500,000 towards running Florence Nightingale Hospice. This year, they are inviting everyone to join them for the 10th anniversary of the walk on Saturday 22 June to celebrate the lives of loved ones and the work that the Hospice does to provide comfort to those in need. “The Midnight Walk is such an inspiring event to take part in and plays a huge role in our fundraising for the Hospice,” explains Lee Lloyd, Head of Fundraising at the charity. “We hope that this 10th Anniversary walk will be a record-breaker with the highest number of walkers ever.” Walkers can choose

Local News Abbeyfield Painting Competition

Beryl Hunter, who lives in Abbeyfield House, Wendover, won a painting competition in early November. Beryl says: "The competition was open to all UK Abbeyfield residents and the brief was to compose a picture for the front cover of the order of service for the Abbeyfield's two carol services to be held in December in St Albans and Liverpool cathedrals. "We have occasional art classes here in our Abbeyfield so we decided to have a go. I knew what I wanted to do but being a life long 'non-artist' I wasn't sure where to start. Our art teacher then left, so I was on my own. There is a very long way to travel between imagination and expression and the picture kept getting lost between head and brush. I enjoyed doing it and I learnt a great deal in the process. After

much experimenting and trial and error, this picture emerged. It is far from perfect and a bit disappointing compared with my original vision, so I was in two minds whether to bother submitting it. Marilyn Storer, Chair of Abbeyfield volunteers, encouraged me to submit it. I could not believe it when it was chosen to be the front cover for the Order of Service."

Children in Need Fundraiser

On Friday 16 November, from about 7am, the children of Forest Close held a Bake Sale to raise funds for Children in Need. Their hard work paid off to the tune of ÂŁ315.19, all donated to the charity. Well done to the children, and thanks to the passers-by who donated so generously.

Local News Pre-Christmas Rotary Fundraising

Thank you to everyone who supported the Rotary Dinner on Tuesday 20 November held at The Raj in support of Parkinson's UK and other Rotary supported charities. At the dinner, the newly developed Fighting Fit programme for people recently diagnosed with Parkinson's was described. Annie Rainbow, a neurophysiotherapist, explained how exercise can slow down the progress of the illness. Over £600 was raised primarily through the generosity of Ricky and his team from the Raj, for which many thanks. Thanks, too, to Andrew Gardner, No1, McCoy's, Scruples and Rotary Members who supplied raffle prizes.

Wendover Cricket Club are now looking forward to the 2019 season after the many successes in 2018. The Under 9, 10, 13 and 15 teams all won their divisions in the Bucks Cricket Board competitions, whilst the U14’s came a very creditable 3rd in the top division and beat both teams that finished above them. The senior 1st XI were the Runners-up in Division 1 of the Mid Bucks League, falling short by a single point. Indoor training/nets starts in January and the club welcomes new senior players of any age and ability. Our main Christmas party was heavily oversubscribed, but we still managed to squeeze everyone in. At time of writing, we are looking forward to our New Year’s Eve party. Amid all this jollity there was some bowling going on. Our results could be better if we only selected the most experienced players, but our policy of including everyone when they feel ready to play will pay dividends in the long run. Speaking to some other clubs, we hear how they struggle to maintain numbers. Last year, Wendover gained more than twenty new members, which reflects well on this most friendly of clubs.

RAF Halton Fatigue Packs for Halton Co-Responders Fifty and Swifty Halton’s Station Flight Safety Officer, Flt Lt Hindley, recently received 20 Fatigue Packs from The RAF Air Safety Centre based at RAF High Wycombe to present to the Station's Co-Responders.

It just seems a little harder when it's cold with horizontal rain, but it turned out fine. Doing laps is very different to a point to point race where you can see the end in sight but I knew I could do it. I suffer from queasiness while running so I prepared myself well with the right food. At the finish I felt elated and proud, so treated myself to a hot chocolate.”

Poppies on the War Memorial

Having heard such wonderful comments from villagers about the War Memorial decorations for Armistice Day I was so disappointed to see that all was removed, apparently to make way for Christmas. There were several Christmases

that our forebears kept us safe in the wet and cold and the damp. Leaving the poppies and the wreaths in the wet and cold and damp would have been a fine way to pay tribute to all who died, reminding us of their courage and selflessness while we celebrate a cosy Christmas. Why can they not have been left up this year, especially, of all years? In loads of other villages around the country they are up for months and months and months. At the time of writing this, Wendover has all its decorations up and there are no decorations at all on the Memorial itself or on the railings so what explanation/reason can Wendover Parish Council possibly have? Sue Abbott On 11th November, Armistice Day, there was a very moving service around the memorial in Wendover, with all ages taking part, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of WW1 and remembering all those that so bravely gave their lives. Consequently we were taken aback to find that all the wreaths and knitted poppies had been removed so soon after and, on 26th November, wrote to the Parish Council to ask why. The response was, 'the wreaths are removed in agreement with The British Legion normally after two weeks allowing us to prepare for Christmas'. So now the Christmas lights and the tree are in place but the memorial is bare! So much for remembrance. Deirdre & Derek Barker

Local Face: Gladys Evans Gladys is very much a woman of the post suffrage period whose work meant she signed the Official Secrets Act during World War II. Born in January 1919, she is looking forward to celebrating her 100th birthday in January 2019 with family, including 4 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren, friends and residents in Abbeyfield House where she has lived since 2004. Gladys’ father joined up for WWI in 1915 and he was assigned to the Norfolk Yeomanry because that’s where his family came from. Her mother was from Aberfan. A cousin was a victim of the Aberfan disaster in 1966. Although she was born in Battersea, the family moved out to Ewell in Surrey when Gladys was 10 and she loved the countryside, especially rural activities like picking blackberries. As was normal in those days, Gladys left school at 15 and enrolled at Pitman’s College studying shorthand, typing and other secretarial skills. On graduating, Gladys immediately went to work for Shell. In September 1939, Shell told all their single women that if they wanted to join the forces then Shell would make up the money and the difference would be sent to their mothers. Gladys immediately joined the WAAF. Her first post was on a switchboard in London but she was soon transferred to Bomber Command then based in Bridge House, Langley, Buckinghamshire. She occasionally had to take secret messages to the hush hush map operation at Hughenden Manor. John Clifford Evans from Cardiff was a career administrator with the RAF and in June 1940 they married. She left the Forces and joined the War Ministry working as a civilian shorthand typist at HQ Bomber Command

which moved to Naphill in High Wycombe with its own set of secret tunnels. Gladys remained there until 1942 when John was posted as adjutant to 60 Squadron in Burma and Gladys moved to live with his father and sister in Cardiff. By 1943 she was back in London again and applied once more to the Ministry of Defence. This time she was sent to work (and sometimes sleep) in the bunker under St James’ Park which housed the Cabinet War Offices. She did not work for Winston Churchill but he would regularly greet the typing pool, “Good morning, girls”. She did take dictation from Genral Ismay having had to climb up a vertical ladder out of the bunker and along a corridor to his office. She shared a flat in the Strand, near the Lyons Corner House, with her friend Penny (Gladys Pentecost). Her mother was unhappy about the bombing in London. Gladys was transferred from the bunker to the Ministry of Production and then to the Air Ministry. She applied to go to the Yalta Conference (February 1945) but wasn’t chosen. Cliff returned in 1945 and they went to live in Cardiff. Cliff had been offered a permanent commission so he stayed in the RAF. Marilyn was born in RAF St Athan, near Cardiff; Adele in RAF Innsworth, near Gloucester; and

Shirley in RAF Scampton, Lincolnshire. RAF Scampton was used for the filming of The Dambusters. Michael Redgrave and Richard Todd were invited to cocktail parties in the Mess which Gladys really enjoyed. The actors wore brown shoes around the base so that airmen knew they didn’t need to salute those “officers” in uniform. Their next posting was Egypt. That came to an abrupt end with the Suez crisis in 1956 and evacuation on a troop ship. More postings included England and Germany where the two younger girls attended a girls Forces boarding school as the older one was by then working in London. They tended to take holidays on the Continent but rushed home one day early to watch the 1966 World Cup. The airmen went wild when England beat Germany and poured soap powder into the fountains in Cologne. Cliff had to reprimand them. In 1967 Cliff retired from the RAF but moved smoothly into Barclays Bank in Tottenham Court Road as part of the initial computerisation of the Bank. In 1973 Barclays moved Cliff to Cheltenham and Gladys joined him in 1974. In 1994 John was showing signs of Dementia so they moved to Swan Mews in Wendover, near both Shirley and Marilyn. Unfortunately Cliff’s condition worsened and eventually he died in Stone Hospital in 2002. Gladys decided to moved into Abbeyfield House in 2004 even though her daughters felt she was too fit and too young for communal living. On the contrary, Gladys had researched carefully and concluded that the type of genuine communal living offered by Abbeyfield House was exactly what she wanted. And so it has proved.

Youth performances which included a variety of musical solos on drums, guitar, keyboard and flute, singing, dancing and some sketches. The response and support of all who watched the show was brilliant and closed with everyone getting to their feet as Freddie Cracroft literally rocked the ‘house’ down on his drums. A big thank you to Pippa Beckford, a local music teacher, for providing the sound equipment and support on the night. Amazing Donkey meets every Friday at Wendover Youth Centre from 7-9pm. The Shepherd’s Hut

The Shepherd’s Hut Outdoor Day Nursery is delighted to have been selected by The Woodland Trust to receive some native species trees to plant on its site in Wendover as part of The Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy. It’s a New Year and any of you with a fitness based New Year’s resolution might find the free to use fitness equipment in Ashbrook and Hampden Meadow is a help. It’s an established fact that exercise in the great outdoors is better for body and mind so why not take advantage of our fresh air gyms? For your Parish Council the new year will be full of challenges. HS2 and our struggle to get the very best mitigation for Wendover goes on. The proposed Small Dean viaduct is truly awful and if you haven’t yet written to David Lidington MP to object to it, that’s something to add to your resolutions. The Unitary Authority poses its own challenges, especially during the transition, when getting District and County to do things might be difficult. RAF Halton’s closure is also likely to start to require attention, as is the Aylesbury Garden Town. So interesting times ahead. Why don’t you join us as a councillor? It won’t be dull.
