Easter Message
By the time this edition of Wendover News is published we ‘might’ have an idea of what’s happening to our country. These last few months have been hugely unsettling and many look forward to some resolution about Brexit... whatever happens. We want to move forward and be positive about our lives together. Lent (the 40 days of preparation in the Church’s year leading up to Easter) is a time of reflection and renewal; a time to look at our lives . . . how we are leading them, how we are looking after ourselves and how we relate to others and most especially with God. Lots of people give up things but many take up things or use the Lenten season to help others in all sorts of ways. And why do we do this? For Christians it is a certain hope that Jesus died on Good
Friday but rose again on Easter Day to make our lives be full of hope and love. At St Mary’s we are symbolising this through our Lenten cross; the cross is made from the church Christmas tree and the vicarage tree stripped bare and nailed together. Each week a symbol of the Holy Week and Easter story is placed in front of the cross . . . bread & wine, the towel & basin, the crown of thorns, the nails that nailed Jesus to the cross reminding us of the pain that Jesus endured for us all. On Easter Day it will be transformed (as we believe our lives are when Jesus rose from the dead) with flowers to celebrate the joy and hope.

Her patient list will be managed by Dr Laura Gush until the end of July. Dr Gush is a GP Registrar who is just completing her training programme. Our other GP Registrars at the present time are Dr Angus Perry and Dr Kulsoom Ali. Online services Online access to your summary medical record, test results and letters from specialists is available by signing up for “Patient Access”. This means you can avoid the need to telephone the practice for results, and you can readily access information you require without incurring a charge (for example for completing travel insurance applications). You can also use this service to book appointments online. Please see our website for details. Changes to Our Opening Hours We will be closed from 6.30pm on Thursday 18 April until 7.30am on Tuesday 23 April for the Easter break. We will also be closed on Saturday 4 and 25 May for the respective May bank holiday weekends. Extra appointments will be offered on other Saturdays in April and May. When we are closed please call 111 if you need urgent medical help. On Tuesday 30 April and Wednesday 22 May we will close at 1pm for staff training. We will reopen from 6.30-8pm on 30 April. Prescriptions for Medicines Available Over the Counter We are all aware of the limitations on resources available for the NHS. To this end, and in line with national and local NHS policy, we do not provide NHS Prescriptions for medicines that are used to treat minor conditions and can be purchased over the counter (OTC). This includes medicines for self-limiting conditions which will usually clear up on their own, such as sore throats, coughs and colds, and conditions that are suitable for self-care, such as indigestion, constipation, mouth ulcers, dandruff, dry skin and warts and verrucae. We will provide NHS prescriptions for OTC medicines that are needed as part of the treatment of complex and long-term conditions, for example certain types of arthritis where large quantities of analgesics are needed, and eczema and psoriasis where large amounts of emollients are required.

In March, Padre (Wing Commander) David Richardson received the Operational Service Medal for Op Shader. Padre Richardson was deployed on Op Shader between December 2015 and April 2016 during a very intensive period of operations against Daesh. He spent a significant amount of time travelling, mostly in Northern Iraq, with training teams supporting Iraqi and Peshmerga Station Commander Group Captain Katherine Wilson with Padre David Richardson Forces, and as a result is the first UK Richardson’s wife, Ruth, in attendance. One of the tragic results of the war was the vast number of disabled men. In December 1919 the Minister of Pensions informed the House of Commons that “the number of persons receiving pensions was 2,621,313. These included 1,059,136 pensions for varying degrees of disability.” This number certainly under-estimated the problem in that illnesses associated with war service often took years to develop. The Pensions Act, for example, stated that claims had to be made within seven years of the date of discharge from the army. This ruling later excluded many cases of “shell-shock”, or what became known as posttraumatic stress, on the grounds that they were not registered within the required time period. Even so, by 1922 some 50,000 men were in receipt of pensions as mental cases. The sad story of Corporal Clement Pickop of Wendover suggests that he may well have suffered from shell-shock. Corporal Pickop returned from service in the Holy Land in April 1919. He was received on his arrival at the Station Hotel by a number of his friends and a welcoming address was given by Mr Pedel on behalf of the Parish Council. Corporal Pickop had been a keen sportsman, but in his reply to Mr Pedel he said that he could no longer take part in the sporting life of the town. He declined to talk about his wartime experiences. Corporal Pickop became a rent collector for Wycombe Rural Council, but lost his job in 1923. He became increasingly depressed and tragically committed suicide in 1925. The April 1919 election for the Wendover Parish Council engendered an unusual amount of excitement as, for the first time, women could both vote and stand as candidates. Eleven seats were available and
25 candidates put their names forward for election. Of the eleven successful candidates, three were women. Art Show Success for Chilterns MS Centre provide the vital funds the Centre needs to The Chilterns MS Centre’s Pop-Up Art Weekend in March proved a popular event once again, raising over £16,000 to help people affected by multiple sclerosis (MS) to reach their goals and live healthier and happier lives.
Visitors were greeted by a range of work including paintings, photographs, ceramics, glass and jewellery. Over 85 painters, jewellers, potters, and ceramicists exhibited their work, including Liz Grammenos, Lori North, Geoff Hutchins, Catherine Golds and students from the Buckinghamshire College Group.

Antenatal Classes Keryn, a Paediatric Nurse and Health Visitor, alongside an experienced Midwife Steph, will be delivering Antenatal classes in Wendover. Their classes will help build your confidence and knowledge as you journey through to parenthood, whilst meeting other local couples to share this wonderful journey with. The Antenatal classes are 2 hour sessions run over four weeks consisting of: 1. Having a newborn 2. Labour, birth and the early days 3. You and your baby 4. One of the main reasons why expectant parents attend antenatal classes is to also meet other local expectant parents. HS2 The Treasury Review
The amount of stick that HS2 is getting in the press shows that it’s not just me that has noticed how poorly led this project is. It also demonstrates how ill equipped government is when it comes to assessing the need for big projects and how inept they are in selecting and managing delivery partners. Surely, no matter where this project ends up there has to be a public enquiry into how it’s been managed. The latest worrying example of this government muddle seems to surround the Treasury Review. This is the same Treasury Review that Liz Truss MP, Chief Secretary to the Treasury, recently suggested might lead to a white elephant cull. HS2 was to be reviewed in March 2019 but now it’s to be in “late summer”. HS2 is expecting to be given Notice to Proceed by Transport Minister Chris Grayling in July 2019. This raises a couple of questions. Why is the HS2 element of the Treasury Review delayed? Is the government more or less likely to shut down a failing project when it’s just got going, employing tens of thousands of people, and busily grubbing up the countryside? We have asked David Lidington our MP to investigate for us.
The Letter
Greatworth and Halse Parish Councils, South Northamptonshire PCs affected by the route, have asked all of the PCs along the line to sign a letter that they have produced, to go to MP’s, asking for HS2 to be stopped. Wendover Parish Council’s long held policy is not to try to stop the HS2 project. It is to get the best possible mitigation for Wendover. This is seen as being a mined tunnel past the village. Our stance has opened many doors to us. We have spoken to Ministers and their advisors, MPs and members of the House of Lords, senior people at HS2 Ltd and the Main Works Contractor. We currently have live discussions in place on Noise, Hydrogeology and Tunnelling and a host of other subjects. We and our advisers believe that this engagement would be impossible to sustain if our message was simply STOP. Following discussions at working group and full Council level it was agreed that WPC should maintain its current position. The Department for Transport has not received a report by OTB engineering published in January 2019 regarding the HS2 Phase One route at Wendover. Hansard As a result of this rather alarming development our lobbyist has now delivered copies of the OTBE report to all ministers at the DfT. Club Corner Wendover and Chiltern Hills Bowls Club
The last few matches of the indoor season will be completed by the beginning of April and we will be heading outdoors on to our splendid green to face completely different challenges. Much more effort is needed to propel the wood across the green than in the more gentle indoor game, especially at the start of the season when the ground is soft. Over the winter a great deal of work has been carried out on and around the bowling green, which will make bowling even more enjoyable. Every Tuesday afternoon and most Friday evenings, we will continue to hold Club Turn Up and Play “Roll-ups” for members. These regular club events are known as “Spoon Drives”. The Club welcomes new members and if you have ever thought of playing or taking part in this popular sport do give it a try. The social side of the Club’s life is also busy, starting off with our splendid “Season Opening Dinner”. Our hard working Social Secretary has a whole string of events planned for the coming months. Elsewhere in this issue of Wendover News you will find details of our open evenings when you can come along and give bowls a go. You will receive gentle coaching and everything is provided, all we ask is that you wear soft soled shoes without a heel, although we do have a small supply of shoes we can lend you. See advert page 7. Don Knight says, “This club is about so much more than just bowls. I joined just over a year ago having never even picked up a bowl before in my life. I have found nothing but encouragement and friendliness, even when I manage to play a rubbish game there is always a pat on the back and a ‘well done’. Wendover FC gets a makeover
If you have been down to our clubhouse recently you will have noticed that we have had a little makeover. With the generous support of LAST, our clubhouse has undergone some much needed updating to its bar and kitchen areas. This work has really brought the club back to life and we look forward to welcoming new and familiar faces down there on match days. In March the club hosted its annual quiz night this year in conjunction with The Wendover Sparrowhawks. We had a fantastic turnout on the night and managed to raise an incredible £450 for Scope. This year’s winners, for the third year running (!), were The Supporters team. A great night was had by all and we look forward to another event next season. Wendover FC Committee would like to welcome back former First Team Manager Mike Gregory who has been appointed as Reserve Team Manager to support our Club Manager Jack Thomson.

With over 50 young people in our Scout troop we are always looking for extra help. We have a core leader team of 6 who run the weekly meeting and additional leaders who come in to deliver Sailing, Kayaking and Craft based type activities. We are now looking for some extra people to get involved on a weekly basis with the troop. Our meetings are Monday evenings in Wendover. This date fell after Wendover News went to press so it has not been possible to publish an analysis in this edition of Wendover News. Examples of comments on Post-it notes collected at the Drop-In Exhibition: Ashbrook Playing Field - zebra crossing needed across Aylesbury Road for school children and those going to the park. Traffic is too fast at all times of day. Halton Wood Road - linked up cycle routes both on and off roads are needed, linking important sites within Wendover. Existing routes to other towns are now dangerous. McIndoe Drive - Parking at Princess Mary Gate is terrible. Developers must provide parking spaces that are useful. Warneford Avenue - The green space in Warneford Avenue is used as a park for children and a public walk-through. This space should be protected as the residents have cut/cleaned this area for 23+ years.

Wharf Road - The speed limit in Manor Road and Wharf Road is 30mph. it should be 20mph. During the busiest periods traffic is its own regulator but during the majority of the day - when children are just as likely to be out and about - vehicles speed along there. A Consultation Statement will now be prepared to send to Wendover Parish Council in May, the next step in the path towards the Final Plan which will later be put to a local referendum.

Wendover Dementia Action Alliance (WDAA) is the umbrella organisation for dementia awareness in Wendover, and if you would like to join or start a project, please get in touch. It comprises members from every level of local life, including residents living with dementia and carers. There is substantial representation from local businesses, schools, the Youth Centre, surgeries, care homes, church and community groups as well as 3rd sector and local authority representation. Wendover Celebrates the future in 2020 with 2020 vision. This means the beneficiaries will be our future - our young people. Wendover Celebrates is a community activity so beneficiaries are usually local organisations. Wendover Youth Centre (WYC) is one such organisation so chairman Tony Playle agreed to be interviewed by Wendover News to explain what it's all about. What does a Trustee do? A Trustee's job is to give oversight, not necessarily to become operational. They will give general guidance, contribute to the Business Plan for the organisation and make sure that expenditure is compatible with that Plan. In the case of WYC, this includes the safeguarding of members, volunteers and staff.

What skills do you need? The most important qualification is some experience of life and an interest or passion for the activity governed by the Trust. A sense of community is invaluable and some experience of management (not necessarily professional). For WYC hands on experience with children or grandchildren is very welcome. Younger trustees bring vigour.

How do you become a Trustee? At WYC a potential Trustee will sit on the board as an observer in the first instance. If they enjoy the experience, a more formal development can occur. Is it a life sentence? Any organisation needs constant renewal. At WYC no Trustee can stand for more than two sessions, each of three years.

Tribute: Mary Mogford thrill of the hunt but was not beyond helping a wily fox escape the hounds, until one polished off all of her son's chickens.
Mary Pheby was born in Deal, Kent on 5 May 1935. Her father worked for the National Provincial Bank and was appointed Bank Manager for Wendover so she moved here age 9. She attended the Farm School, Wendover Dean, opposite the then blacksmith. The family lived in the lovely Brook House in Tring Road, now developed as 3 dwellings. She was madly keen on horses, particularly jumping horses, and even as a school girl was sought after to jump for other owners of horses at national and international events at Haringey and White City.
She was naturally very shy but her parents had been very community minded so when her Tone started work for Wendover she made an enormous effort. To raise money for the Wendover Swimming Pool she ran the Wendover Horse Show and Gymkhana for many years. She also supported Ladies vs Wendover Mens Football Club, Nomads, the Bowls Club and many other activities.
In 1952, Tony Mogford took over the tenancy of Bank Farm just across Hale Road from Brook Tony and Mary after the sheep run in As a farmer's wife, Mary became an integral part February 2016 of the farm. Local Face: Mary Sketch Mary was born near Leeds where she lived as the third of four sisters, her twin, Margaret, being the older by 20 minutes! Having attended Notre Dame Collegiate School for 3 years, Mary had one year in Edinburgh in Holy Cross Academy before the family moved due to a promotion for her father, a Civil Engineer who became the “Divisional Road Engineer for Wales and Monmouth” in the Civil Service.
Since Tony’s death, Mary has become more deeply involved with Churches Together in Wendover. A team of four, including Mary, led two very enjoyable Lent courses in prayer a few years ago, and Mary has been able to lead two days on the Psalms (which she loves) and a half day of meditation, which is to be followed this Lent by a morning of meditations for this season of the Church’s year. She is also involved in the Ecumenical Services of Healing and Wholeness which now take place monthly in St Anne’s or St Mary’s. Mary loves the fact that the three churches can pray and work together and that St Anne’s is the home of Wendover Free Church as well as her Roman Catholic “family”.
In Cardiff she attended Heathfield House RC High School for three years, followed by the University of Wales, Cardiff College, where she obtained a First Class Honours degree in Latin. Mary retains her love of words, which she finds fascinating.
Mary met Tony Sketch, working as a Civil Mary started volunteering at Wendover Engineer but with Glamorgan County Council, Library two years after Tony died, and is glad and married him after teaching for a year to give something back to the village. Later, the family spent four happy years in Swansea before Tony became the Deputy and later the County Engineer for Buckinghamshire. 20 years in Aylesbury, where St Joseph’s RC Church was important in Mary and later Tony’s lives, were followed by their time in Wendover. Tony died nine years ago, and the last few months were difficult. Mary has now lived here for 21 years. All those years ago, Mary taught RE to “her” class, 2a, in Tredegar Park, Newport (now owned by the National Trust) and perhaps this led later to her great interest in Christian Spirituality. Happy years in the Charismatic Prayer Group at St Joseph’s were followed by 3 years as a student in the Chiltern Christian Training Programme which later became a Local Ecumenical Project. Nine topics were studied, and Mary later led the courses on “Growing in Prayer” in Aylesbury and High Wycombe. She wrote two books for those leading groups in prayer in connection with her work with the RCIA Group in St. Joseph’s, and a privately published book of her own prayers.

It was a joy to teach and learn from Christians of different denominations, and the closure of the CCT Programme in 2000 was a great loss, but was followed by three years in the London Centre for Spiritual Direction studying the art of Spiritual Direction. Mary sees “Directees” of all denominations, but most “Directors” are not keen on that title, preferring to be thought of as people who accompany others in their journey towards God. www.wendovernews.co.uk

In the natural world April is a time for the new. In the WPC world I’m in a more reflective mood. Wendover has had an interesting year. The Best Kept Village accolade has sat well with us and the grounds team and the WI, who are now caring for the planting outside “Istanbul”, are keen to succeed again. I’ve resisted the Istanbul humour. The PC’s resurfacing of the Heron Path is completed, one year ahead of programme, and looking great. Our Neighbourhood Plan Group, through incredibly hard work, has developed an excellent draft plan that I’m pretty sure will lead to an acceptable, made plan being incorporated into The Vale of Aylesbury Plan (VALP). The new Parish Clerk, Keith, has settled in and he and his team are extremely approachable and engaging so service delivery is continuing to improve. For the future the PC needs to keep an eye on some big stuff. The Unification of AVDC/ BCC etc. VALP and the RAF Halton closure rumble on. HS2 is it seems always with us. More locally I’m concerned at the difficulty local clubs and organisations seem to have in recruiting helpers, members and all kinds of doers. Wendover is an interesting place and much of that interest is generated by the wide range of activities offered by volunteers. They are struggling more than ever to recruit though, and so their future is threatened. The PC has two vacancies at present.
