On 1 July we introduced a new service across the three Westongrove practices aimed at providing timely and efficient care for patients who have urgent health problems. All patients requiring care on the same day will receive a call back from a doctor or nurse. Many problems can be dealt with over the phone, but where required a face-to-face appointment will be arranged with a member of the clinical team. This service is not intended for follow up of continuing health problems. Please assist our Receptionists by answering their questions when you call us, this will help them to ensure that your problem is dealt with in the most appropriate and effective way.

Our Car Park
Increasing demand for our services mean that there is sometimes a shortage of parking places at the Health Centre. The car park is private property and is reserved for use by bone fide visitors to the Health Centre. If you can walk or park elsewhere that would be very welcome. We reserve the right to use the services of a parking management company if this becomes necessary at a future date.

We welcome Dr Martin Twine who has joined the team; he has taken over Dr Claire Chappell’s list. Dr Angus Perry, who has been with us as a Registrar, will be staying on from August as a salaried GP.

The Friends are a registered charity whose aim is to support the care of patients registered at the Health Centre. One of the main services they offer is transport to hospital appointments. As a Year 4 student at Wendover Junior School, Lola wanted to do her ‘bit’ for the environment and climate change by organising a day when she and other children can pick up litter in their neighbourhood. Her hope is to enlist the help of other local children and their families to join her on a local litter picking day.

Fighting Plastic Budgens
#fightingagainstplastic Sweeney’s Budgens plan to be at the forefront of stopping single use plastics. Hopefully you will have seen some of our first steps in store, but there is much more to come. 1. Recycling We have introduced recycle bins at the front of the store.

We would like to stock more but we are mindful about preventing food waste from unsold products. 3. Bakery Most of the bread and cakes we ‘bake off’ in store are unpacked and likewise most of our Rex Bakery (not sliced) is sold without packaging. Recyclable paper bags are available for customers that require packaging. Again, we are investigating how to increase this unpacked range even further.

Other things On a positive note it sounds as if David Lidington is getting somewhere with setting up a meeting of tunnelling experts. No date yet but positive noises from him. He is also setting up a meeting with BCC/EK regarding the Small Dean viaduct effect on the A413. On Wednesday 3 July I had a very positive meeting with the Shadow Rail Minister, Rachael Maskell MP. Labour are in favour of HS2 but they are not convinced by the scheme as it is presented or of the way it is being delivered. Rachael listened very attentively and seemed to take on board the benefits offered by the Mined Tunnel and also our view that HS2, as a project, should be subject to a peer review process. Many other large projects have found this type of review invaluable. A meeting took place on Monday 8 July, in Birmingham, on the subject of Hydrogeology. I attended with Andy Band and Murray Cooke of Wendover HS2. Andy leads for us on Hydrogeology. I was dismayed to find that not much has changed on Hydrogeology in the last 12 months. There are still tests to be carried out and vital data has not trickled down from HS2 to inform crucial design elements. Not a meeting to inspire confidence in the project at all. Tom Walsh

Larry's Ukulele Tour "It seemed a good idea . . ." Have you met Larry Warr on one of the days when he manages the Florence Nightingale Hospice Shop in Wendover? You may have seen him with his uke outside the shop from time to time.
At the official celebration of the opening of the Hospice's 30th year in March, people were encouraged to do something for 30 minutes to raise £30. On the way home, an idea started developing: to sing and play for 30 minutes at each of the 8 shops ending at the Hospice itself, all within an 8 hour working day. The FNHC team loved the idea and Larry's wife Sue, a Hospice nurse, said Go for it. Sue became driver, time keeper, supplier of food and drink. Larry's best mate and great guitarist, Malcolm, joined the party along with another friend, Adrian, also a very experienced ukulele player.
On Friday 14 June skies were grey with drizzle. As the merry band set off to Winslow the rain set in but by the time they reached the Aylesbury shop, the sun was shining and the enthusiasm reached people on a bus and nearby office workers, too. The collection bucket was getting heavier. In Haddenham, Red Kite Radio interviewed them and in Thame the next door pub joined in the fun. Wendover turned out in huge numbers including temporary reinforcements from the Wendover Ukelele Group. At the Hospice they were able to play for residents in the garden. Thanks to everyone who supported in person or online. Donations of nearly £500 were raised on the day. Sue managed everything brilliantly, and the day was an absolute joy.

As Wendover News went to press, the residents of the Ellesborough Road Cottages received notice to quit in preparation for HS2 Ltd to possess the cottages. More information online as it comes in. The HS2 project has been making national headlines with renewed government scrutiny and a review suggesting potential cancellation. Progress is also being made at a local level. We’re very pleased that local action has resulted in HS2 agreeing to pay for the Very Low Noise Surface for the Wendover Bypass (see next article). The design of the Wendover Dean Viaduct (near the Firecrest) was revealed in July prior to submission to AVDC for planning approval. This involved revised modelling by Eiffage Kier designers showing that a key noise source is the train pantographs (that connect the train to the overhead powerlines). This problem is not solved by 6m high noise barriers. This will also affect 100s of Wendover homes from the proposed A413 Viaduct, the Embankment and the Cutting beside the bypass. Two other issues revealed by the EK design for the Wendover section include the future traffic restriction on the A413 and the lack of a solution to the Coombe Hill aquifer damage which threatens the spring water flowing to the Grand Union Canal and Weston Turville Reservoir. The mined tunnel addresses all these issues. We are working further with David Lidington MP to get the DfT and HS2 Ltd to allow EK to examine this alternative before seeking AVDC planning approval later this year. Wendover HS2

A Visit from Alpacas Alpacas are a rare sight in nursing homes. But here they are (see photo) visiting the Leonard Pulham Nursing Home in Halton. They even looked in on residents who wanted to see them but couldn't leave their rooms. Events like this are an everyday part of life for Liz Jones, who has just celebrated 26 years as Activities Organizer at Leonard Pulham. Repeated inspections have praised the activities and stimulation provided for residents. Liz's role is crucial but she insists it's a team effort involving nurses and all support staff. It is not just that everyone is respected as an individual; she says, "Our residents look forward to the interaction and activities. If their personal routines aren't followed sympathetically, they won't have a sense of well-being and they won't welcome the activity - and getting involved is always a choice for our residents."

BBOWT return to the High Court
This summer, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire & Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust returned to the High Court for the next stage in their claim against the government regarding the Oxford to Cambridge Expressway - the judicial review. Judgement was reserved on the case, meaning they won't know the verdict immediately, but should hear the verdict and be able to update on the result later this summer. Regardless of the outcome, BBOWT will continue to pursue the needs of wildlife and the natural environment.

Club Corner Junior Cricket Development Tournament
continued from front page There are many fantastic junior cricket tournaments held all over Bucks during the summer term but The WCC Development Tournament was designed to be a bit different. From the outset, the philosophy underpinning the event was to give those boys and girls who do not usually get the opportunity to experience tournament cricket a chance to shine. Open to teams of both U10 and U11 age groups, the tournament was for those children still learning and honing their cricket skills. Clubs from all over the south Bucks area entered teams including Chesham, Winchmore Hill, Beaconsfield, Dinton, Cublington and Gerrards Cross. Nearly 100 children took part in the day’s events and all left smiling……but tired!! The morning session was an U10’s tournament, with eight teams playing matches on 4 pitches simultaneously. All teams played with great enthusiasm and commitment and there was no shortage of fun and excitement. Ultimately the teams played their final matches to decide who would be crowned U10 Champions…..and as luck would have it the Wendover Lions prevailed. The afternoon matches were for the U11 teams, again played in great spirit and even with some sun on their backs. In the end it was another Wendover side who won overall but all the teams played well. The feedback from all the players and coaches who took part in the event has been very positive. One coach wrote “…… the format worked great, the arrangements
were spot on both before and during the tournament and the games were all played in a great spirit”. The Chesham coach wrote “…please know that all the Chesham kids (I am sure other teams as well) really ended the day with a great deal more experience and improved cricketers as a result!”.

The President’s team of vets/coaches won all their group games and set a competitive score in the final, but that was easily overhauled by the big hitting of George Robinson and Matt King, who both retired shortly before their team won.

Club Corner At the end of June we held our Gala day when a dozen clubs came and played against each other. Wendover did field a team with strict instructions not to do too well as it would be rude to win. Etiquette was satisfied as we came in midfield. The day was a huge success with very positive feedback from our visitors. July saw the needle match of the year when the ladies played the gentlemen. I am ashamed to report that the “gentlemen” did not live up to their name and won. So the ladies will hold the six foot wooden spoon trophy for another year. Never mind ladies there is always next time. The evening concluded with a lovely supper prepared for us by Ashlea Catering. It is good to see some of our newest members joining teams against other clubs in matches. The hot weather has made some of the games a bit of an ordeal as there isn’t much shade to be found on a bowling green. Though our results are a bit patchy everyone seems to enjoy playing other clubs and it is great to meet so many other people. The object of the exercise is, after all, to enjoy it and I feel that we do. Don Knight

The joy in the room at the WDAA Tea Dance in St Mary’s on Tuesday 2 July was palpable. On the way home, one dancer was in tears because it was the best afternoon she could remember for a long time.

Dancing was not compulsory but even being in a wheelchair didn’t stop those with mobility issues. The Swing Dance MK group, sandy@swingdancemk.com led the way with demonstrations as well as partnering dancers. One of the more mature guests was able to teach Sandy, the leader, a new dance. Short term memory problems do not inhibit recall of routines learned in earlier times.
During the interval, scones and cakes were served with tea in beautiful bone china which was much appreciated by all. Then the emphasis was on singing - with movements and instruments - and everyone loved it. The WDAA volunteers and Carers enjoyed it as much as anyone else. Everyone was glowing for all sorts of reasons by the end. Comments from Facebook: “An excellent event put together by such caring & supportive people. 26th Aylesbury Beer Festival support from local businesses with Aylesbury Premier Building Services (APBS), providers of domestic and commercial building maintenance and repair services, sponsoring the Beer Festival for the second year.
The 26th Aylesbury Beer Festival will build on the huge success of last year’s event which raised over £10,000 for Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity the first time. The event will be held at the Sir Henry Floyd Grammar School in Aylesbury on Friday 1 and Saturday 2 November. “Last year we added the Local Gin Showcase to widen the Festival’s appeal which was very popular and will return again this year,” says Simon Morgan, Community Events Manager at Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity. “We are also planning to add a Craft Beer Bar to increase the variety of drinks on sale. But real ales will remain at the heart of the Festival which makes it an unmissable event for any serious ale drinker.”

RAF Halton RAF Halton Trainees help the Force (RAF) Halton and whilst there, Community Trainees undergoing initial training at RAF Halton recently volunteered spare time at Buckinghamshire Goat Centre and Chilterns Dog Rescue Society. Thompson Intake at RAF Halton sent recruits to help in rejuvenating their facilities by painting sheds and resurfacing parking areas.
The trainees at the Goat Centre painted the sheds and performed a major clean-up of the pens. While at the Chilterns Dog Rescue Society, the trainees dug a new pond and resurfaced the gravel parking areas. Cpl Latimer-Jenkins said: “The two events were well received by both the recruits and the organisations alike, allowing them to work together to achieve a positive result.” Thompson Intake is one of six Intakes at Recruit Training Squadron at RAF Halton. Intakes can take part in community projects during a local leave weekend as part of the Basic Recruit Training Course. The point of the community projects is to maintain good relationships with the local community and demonstrate the importance of them to recruits. Cpl Hargreaves said: “The recruits achieved the tasks to a high standard and gave maximum effort throughout the day, impressing the staff at the centres.”

The new youth activities centre was only possible thanks to the generous donation by the RAF Benevolent Fund. We hope this facility will provide a space for all the young people connected to RAF Halton to join in activities tailored especially for them.” During the visit to RAF Halton, HRH had the pleasure of viewing reconstructed World War I Trenches, known as the Lister Lines. The trenches were discovered in 2009 and were reconstructed using World War I field engineering manuals. It is believed that the trenches were originally constructed in 1915 and over 7 miles were built to simulate a stretch of the Western Front.
HRH then moved to the final event of the visit, the youth activities centre. Whilst there, HRH greeted many of the military families’ children who will be using the new facility. The children were seen playing table tennis with HRH joining in for a brief game, before moving on to sign the station visitors’ book. HRH then concluded the visit by formally unveiling the youth activities centre plaque, officially opening the centre for use. Group Captain Katherine Wilson OBE, Station Commander at RAF Halton said: “It is an honour and privilege to be the Station Commander of RAF Halton and welcoming HRH The Duchess of Cornwall to visit our Station. Our personnel work tirelessly throughout the year and it is wonderful to be given the opportunity to display the incredible work they do, made all the more special as we celebrate RAF Halton’s Centenary.”

Local Face: James Morgan James moved to Wendover in April 2002 to take up the position of Head coach at Halton Tennis Centre alongside good friend and Director of Tennis - Mike James. Born in Welwyn Garden in March 1976, James fell in love with tennis just before his 11th birthday after watching the year ending Davis Cup final featuring Sweden’s Stefan Edberg. Tennis kit and lessons followed, and James began spending many hours on his local courts at Bletchley Leisure Centre in Milton Keynes, where Alan Hutcherson, now a colleague at Halton, also played. After 5 months of hard work and a lot of practice, James was invited to try out for a spot in county training -- which took place at Halton Centre in what was back then, the only indoor dome. A move across the border saw James continue his tennis and education in Hertfordshire and after passing his Senior Performance Coach Award, James took up a post at Gosling Sports Park in Welwyn Garden City, where he met Mike. Mike had just returned from a position as national coach in Scotland, where he had been working with none other than Andy Murray! Together, Mike and James led the county performance programme there. Before long, Mike mentioned that he was thinking of making the move to Halton Tennis Club, with the vision of making Halton one of Great Britain’s premier tennis clubs. James didn’t take much persuading to come along. His reply was, “If you’re going, I’m going!”
James has been living in Wendover and working at Halton for the last 17 years. He is happily married to Alison, and is a very proud dad of daughters Freya (9) and Jessica (turning 7 soon). When he’s not on the court, James has developed a keen interest in trail running -- taking advantage of all the local trails -and has now run four marathons and three ultra-marathons. Last year, he competed in the Race to the Stones -- a 100km race over two days, starting in Lewknor and ending at the Avebury stone circle. He credits running coach and Halton personal trainer Helen Mulhall for turning him from a ‘joyous tourist’ to a half-decent runner over the last years. He’s also grateful to Matt BlackmoreSquires, another local face, for coaxing him off the road and onto the trails. As a firm believer in the mental health benefits of physical activity, James is an advocate of daily exercise. He suggests that even ten minutes of ‘green exercise’ -- taken in the great outdoors -- can have an uplifting effect on mood and can help combat depression and fatigue. Over the last few summers, James has enjoyed the opportunity to lead members of his church through a twelve-week programme of physical activity, including an experiential day at Green Park in Aston Clinton with instructors Morgan, Harry and
the team. James says, “A real highlight for me is to see a group of people break through fear, uncertainty and doubt, and move themselves outside their comfort zone in an environment of teamwork, challenge, and support. We have led a number of these days over the years with businesses and charities, too, through our work at Halton Tennis Centre. Our Eupsychia -- ‘good mind’ -- days help us to learn to ‘play to win’ and to choose growth and learning over fear in work and life.” James’s daily work is as programme manager of Halton Tennis Centre’s coaching team Everyball Tennis. For James, and all the coaches, Everyball is a philosophy that extends way beyond the courts: “If you are an Everyball player, you are committed not only to answering the questions that each ball may ask, but also the questions that each day may ask! We seek to educate, motivate and inspire through our programmes that cater for everyone from the ‘cradle to the tour’ with the motto ‘each different, each talented, all valued.’” The Summer Camp programme is back this year, with daily activities for tots (2.5-4), minis (4-7), juniors (7-17) and this year -- for adults too.
