BUCKINGHAMSHIRE COUNSELLING
How to deal with infidelity in a relationship
Picture being married or in a long-term relationship where you believe all is well; you and your partner love each other, you are still having sex with each other and make an effort to spend time together. Then one day you find out your partner has been having an affair. Your world falls apart, you struggle to understand what happened as you try to decide whether to stay or leave. This is the reality for many couples.
Finding out that you have been cheated on can really hurt, you may feel totally overwhelmed with emotions, which confuses your mind and makes processing the unfaithfulness much harder to do.
Take time to weigh up your options
In order to make the right decision for you, it’s best to take your time to absorb all the information you have received fully. You may choose to spend some time away from your partner, to help you to assess how you really feel and whether you are ready to forgive and move on.
Move on together or separately
This is a big decision either way and regardless of your choice the road ahead is going to be a revelation and full of personal growth. If you decide to stay with your partner couples counselling would be the best way forward to work through your issues and strengthen your relationship.
If you choose to end your relationship counselling can help you with adjusting to a different way of living. There is no time frame for how long it will take your heart to heal so taking time for yourself is essential to work out what you truly want for yourself.
