Oktoberfest Wendover started during the 2020 lockdown, when No2 created booths of tables on the Manor Waste, carefully distanced to comply with COVID restrictions. James, the owner of No2, was inspired to raise funds for Macmillan having had first-hand experience of the brilliance that Macmillan Cancer Support gave him and his family. Since then, No2 has raised thousands for this essential charity that lost so much during the pandemic. Profit from Oktoberfest will be given to Macmillan Cancer Support.

Thanks to immense sponsorship from Masons Coach Hire, based in Long Marston, there will be a shuttle service to and from local towns and stations. Profits raised through the shuttle service will also be given to Macmillan Cancer Support. Running alongside, separate from Oktoberfest, will be No2’s Artisan Pavilion. The Pavilion will house some exceptional handpicked artisan food, drink, and crafters. Additionally, set around the Artisan Pavilion will be a series of street food vendors and bars including a covered area to sit and enjoy your food and drink whilst listening to live music. To attend the Artisan Pavilion tickets are just £5, and all profits from ticket sales will go to Macmillan Cancer Support. Guests who are attending Oktoberfest will have free entry to No2’s Artisan Pavilion. The Artisan Pavilion is open Friday 7th from 5 – 9pm, Saturday 8th from 10am – 9pm and Sunday 9th from 10am – 4pm.

Ashbrook Park, Aylesbury Road, also known as Castle Park, is the new home of No2’s Oktoberfest, kicking off on Friday 7 October at 6pm, concluding on Sunday 9 with a raffle given by BBC journalist and presenter Nigel Barden. There will be the classic lines of tables seating 400 people in a huge Oktoberfest Marquee. Tickets include a lavish Bavarian meal inspired by celebrity chefs including Cyrus Todiwala, Richard Corrigan & Phil Vickery amongst others. There will also be live No2 thank the following for their generous music on the stage as well as entertainment to support: DSM Fabrication Ltd, Masons Coach Hire, and Love Food Events Ltd, for their amazing keep all the family amused. help with the contacts, paperwork and hardware. Some works progressing

During June there have been some visible signs of progress by EKFB, notably the creation of a new path between Ellesborough Road and Wellwick Farm as a diversion for the Right of Way that crossed the field behind Wendover Station.

While the Environment Agency is understood to be withholding approval for any works that will affect the Aquifer in the Green Tunnel section, considerable excavation has been undertaken in the Small Dean section in preparation for the Viaduct. There is now a massive spoil dump at Small Dean Lane, which is estimated to grow to 150,000 tons of material before being moved north to form the embankment beside the Bypass and cover the Green Tunnel.

Monitoring HS2 Lorries in Wendover

There was a recent spate of HS2 related HGV lorries carrying tarmacadam going through Wendover trying to find the works compound beside the bypass. This should not be happening, as the formal route explicitly avoids the village centre. You can report issues like this (or make any other complaints) to the HS2 Helpdesk which is available 24 hours a day on 08081 434 434.

This was delayed from built. May to resolve some road safety considerations. Less obvious developments include the creation of miles of field drains to handle surface water Also the long awaited demolition of the cottages Field drains in Ellesborough Road took place between 13 and 15 June with daytime road closures. This was delayed from last year due to bats roosting,

Approximately 16,000 tonnes of food waste is collected from homes across Buckinghamshire every year, which is enough to fill almost eight Olympic swimming pools. So, with food prices rising by an average of 6% this year and everyday essentials including cooking oils, butter, pasta and milk rising by as much as 10% according to a report in May by the Office for National Statistics, perhaps now is a good time to re-evaluate what we are buying and more importantly how much is being thrown away each week. Not only does food waste have an impact on household finances but globally, the production of food accounts for 37% of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) and 40% is wasted. In the UK, 70% of the post-farm-gate food waste comes from households, which is equivalent to £14billion per year and 20 million tonnes of GHG emissions.

Download the ‘Too Good to Go’ App to see what is available locally. 2. Do you have un-opened food in the cupboard that you don’t want? Then download Olio and give it away for free. There are also local Food Heroes who collect unwanted food such as bread and make it available to anyone for free. 3. Create a meal plan for the week and only buy what you need to eat. Schools Youth Author Workshop at CWA

Students from Chiltern Way Academy's Wendover Campus were the first to participate in a workshop with budding author Ciaran Thapar. This literary workshop explored the themes in his new book, Cut Short. His book explores the harsh reality of young people and their exposure to knife crime as well as the life-long repercussions it comes with. Each student was able to work with the author in a collaborative 2-hour workshop where they received a signed copy of his new book to take home. The students were talking about the workshop long after it had finished and went on to submit their own pieces for a creative writing anthology. Each student piece will be read aloud over the radio by a professional author or publisher. They will also be given the chance to have their work published in the anthology, and receive two free copies.

RAF Halton RAF Halton Granted the Freedom of Thame

On Sunday 15th May, the Queen’s Colour of Royal Air Force Halton and Escort Squadron paraded through the town of Thame. The town’s Mayor conducted a review of the parade alongside the Station Commander, Group Captain Startup, before granting RAF Halton the Freedom of Thame by marching through the town with swords drawn, bayonets fixed and the Queen’s Colour flying. The parade was led by the Parade Commander, Wing Commander Toothill, and was supported by the superb musical accompaniment of The Band of the Royal Air Force Regiment.

RAF Aviators prepare for Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Pageant Over 300 Royal Air Force aviators prepared for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee at RAF Halton in advance of the Pageant at Buckingham Palace.

Aviators from around the UK and overseas territories were practicing their drill routines alongside members of the Queen’s Colour Squadron and RAF musicians at the RAF station in Buckinghamshire. Group Captain Dan Startup, Station Commander at RAF Halton said: “Her Majesty’s Royal Air Force is immensely proud to form a key part in the celebrations for Her Majesty's Platinum Jubilee. Royal Air Force Halton personnel have been refreshing Aviators from across the Service so that they could meet the highest standards of Parade readiness on Sunday. We are honoured to pay tribute to our Monarch, who has served the country and supported the Royal Air Force for the past 70 years.” The RAF Central Band also performed the new pageant composition, titled “For Queen & Country” as well as a rendition of “Sweet Caroline”, which has become an internet sensation surrounding the Jubilee. In addition to the traditional Trooping the Colour military display to celebrate The Queen’s Official Birthday, members of the UK Armed Forces were on parade throughout the Jubilee weekend to mark her 70 years as sovereign and head of the Armed Forces. The preparations at Halton followed the flypast rehearsal at RAF College Cranwell and were mirrored by similar work being done by the Royal Navy and British Army to prepare for the Platinum Jubilee. The marching detachment also held an early morning practice on Tuesday 31 May outside Buckingham Palace.

Local Faces:

John Colet School Head Students

The new team of Head Students at John Colet School is keen to go back to the many fundraising student activities so sadly missed during lockdown and its aftermath and to innovate, too. One option might be a promotional video for the school website.

The Head Students see themselves as coordinators for two different groupings within the school. As the sixth form continues to grow, the Head Students see themselves as its voice in discussions with staff. Just as important is the opportunity for sixth formers to help younger students with all their transitions, too. One of their main concerns is to provide more sporting opportunities for sixth formers. This will include use of the Fitness Suite on Tuesday afternoons and a special sporting challenge once every half term. This could include staff v student games and other similar fun activities, possibly with community input including food trucks offering nutritious options.

Wendover Dementia Support

The Monday Club Café celebrated the Platinum Jubilee on Monday 30th May. The Christian Centre was decorated with Union Jack bunting and red, white and blue balloons and flowers. Our visitors came all dressed up for the Jubilee and were served tea in china cups and saucers and home- made cakes with Union Jack icing. A popular feature was the life-sized cardboard cut-out of the Queen and everyone enjoyed singing the National Anthem and a whole range of patriotic and uplifting songs. Most of our visitors remember the coronation and enjoyed reminiscing over pictures of the Queen at various stages in her reign and thinking about their own lives. While our visitors often have difficulty with short term memory they are often able to recall incidents and memories from the past. We therefore encourage reminiscence at the Monday Club café as it can give people with dementia a sense of competence and confidence through using a skill they still

have. We all possess memories, we all have our own unique life history and recalling the past is a means of owning it and hence preserving ourselves. Music also has a special role in taking us back in time, and bringing the feelings of joy associated with particular songs into the present moment. We support anyone living locally with a diagnosis of dementia and our service includes home visits, the Monday Club Café and the Family Support Group. To learn about our positive approach to dementia see our website www.wendoverds.org.uk.

Wendover Parish Council Matters Arising View from the Chair

This View from the Chair is being written early as I hope to manage to fly off to sunny climes tomorrow with many others, as long as the flight goes ahead and we get through security. If the baggage doesn’t make it, never mind! So, we had a glorious day on the Witchell with our Picnic in the Park, the weather was just right, not too hot but pleasant and sunny. Rob Butler MP rushed back from the Trooping of the Colour to join us, and we met many residents on our tour of the cricket ground. It was fantastic to see so many people enjoying themselves and listening to the dulcet tones of the superb duo Ellis & Green.

I am so glad that we had managed to present him with it a few years ago in recognition of his unstinting work for Wendover. I also attended the mayor making for Aylesbury, which was an interesting event but did not include an official weigh-in to see if the outgoing Mayor had gained from his year in office! We congratulate Tim Dixon as the new mayor and wish him a successful and happy term of office. That’s all for now, enjoy the start of the summer months. Sheila Bulpett
