Medicines for Hay Fever

The peak of the hay fever season is June and July when grass pollen levels are highest. If you suffer from hay fever you should start preventive medication before the season commences. All recommended medicines including antihistamines such as cetirizine or loratadine, steroid nasal sprays (e.g. beclometasone), and sodium cromoglicate eye C drops, are available over the counter at pharmacies. In line with NHS policy, we do not provide prescriptions for such medicines except where the use of a given medicine M falls outside its license. Your pharmacist will advise if this is the case. A number of nondrug measures help reduce exposure to pollens, including rubbing Vaseline aroundY the nostrils and using special filters in cars and vacuum cleaners. Wendover Remembers

WENDOVER REMEMBERS – JUNE 1918 In June 1918 the great German offensives on the Western Front were finally checked. Heavy fighting took place along the River Aisne where American forces played a major part in retaking Chateau Thierry. French troops stopped the Germans from advancing on Compiegne. In Italy, the Austro-Hungarians were repulsed by a combined British, French and Italian army. The British Independent Air Force was formed for the strategic bombing of German cities and factories. At sea, near Fastnet, the British hospital ship Llandovery Castle was torpedoed with the loss of 244 lives. At home the Bucks Herald reported that the Wendover Prisoner of War Fund had been able to adopt 6 more prisoners and had accepted responsibility for sending them food parcels. Three of the six were old school friends from Wendover, Privates Harry Caudrey, Leslie Wood and William Deering. In June 1918 Wycombe Rural District Council informed the Parish Council that 30 houses were to be built in Wendover and asked for two representatives to sit on the committee to select a site or sites. Although it was thought very necessary to have the scheme prepared, the erection of the houses would not take place until after the war. By January 1921 some of the houses were ready for occupation. They were built in the newly

constructed Victory Road, those on the north side were called Haig Cottages and on the south, Beatty Cottages. Several ex-service men were in occupation at the beginning of the year and more would move in as the houses were finished.

At the annual meeting of the North Bucks Congregational Union three ministers were congratulated for volunteering for temporary service with the Y. M. C. A. One of those ministers was the Rev William Williams of the Wendover Congregational Church who later wrote of his experiences in the Wendover Magazine. Initially attached to a Bakery Camp in the centre of Dieppe which supplied bread to over a million men every day he learnt the routine of life behind the lines. He later moved to a camp on the hill above Dieppe. He wrote – “The camp itself is a remount camp, with stabling accommodation for two thousand horses. These horses were brought over by boat from England to the docks at Dieppe, from whence they were fetched by the men and brought up to our camp. Once or twice a

week the men had to take a batch of horses to the front lines to fill gaps made by bombs, shells or bullets.” After five weeks at this camp the Rev Williams took sole charge of the Y.M.C.A. hut at a camp mid-way between Dieppe and Rouen. In addition to hundreds of British soldiers there were nearly two hundred German prisoners in the camp and more in the many camps in the forest around. He wrote that although the work was hard and rough and the hours long he regarded the time he spent with the Y.M.C.A. as among the happiest in his life.

The Chilterns MS Centre provides treatment and services to over 550 people a year living with multiple sclerosis (MS) in Buckinghamshire and the surrounding counties. MS is a disease of the central nervous system that can lead to progressive disability and there is no cure. Symptoms can affect people in different ways so there is no “one solution fits all” treatment. Through physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, oxygen therapy, complementary and occupational therapies, the Centre helps its members gain greater control over their MS, empowering them to lead happy and healthy lives. This type of long term support is not available on the NHS and many people using the Centre have described it as a lifeline. The Chilterns MS Centre doesn’t just focus on medical treatments. It also offers support in other ways, including a social group, art therapy and gardening group. These give additional support through shared experiences and friendship, as well as helping people to do something they love, like painting or tending to flowers. One of the benefits of the Centre is that it also supports the families and carers of those affected by MS too, through counselling, physiotherapy and support groups. The Centre costs over £1 million pounds to run each year and receives only 10% funding from the NHS. It therefore relies on the generous donations from its members, the general public and business in the area. One way in which people can make a donation is by doing

a challenge event to raise money from friends and family. Ben Parry is one such person. He is riding 250k around Wendover on the longest day (24 June) to raise awareness of MS and raise money for the Centre, as it supports his wife Abi, who has MS. “This is a charity very close to my heart as my wonderful and amazing wife, Abi, suffers from MS. The staff at the Chilterns MS centre provide her with support when needed, and ongoing treatment.... so now I want to give something back! I’m inspired by the work of Chilterns MS Centre and wanted to support them by raising money so that they can provide treatment to more people.” Ben Parry.

Don't forget that the Parade is gathering at Ashbrook Playing Field, also known as Castle Park, Aylesbury Road, HP22 6AD from 10am on Sunday 27 May. Judging will take place at 11.30am. The map, right, on this page shows the Parade Route. Find your perfect position to see the Parade pass by from 12 noon. The Parade will go along Aylesbury Road then up the High Street and along South Street. Many spectators will choose to walk to the Carnival ground via Heron Path as shown on the map. Others may wish to follow the Parade then pass down Church Lane to the pedestrian entrance as shown.

Parish Council Awards The Annual Meeting for Wendover Parish Council took place on Thursday 19 April, the day after the May print edition of Wendover News went to press. A speaker from Thomson Habitat described mitigation creating a haven for protected amphibians and reptiles which will be ready for the transfer of animals in the Autumn when HS2 works will disturb their current home. Many organisations which have been beneficiaries of grants from Wendover Parish Council gave brief talks including Wendover Youth Centre, Carers Bucks and Wendover Celebrates. Presentations were also made. Lindengate, represented by Michael Harris, received a cheque in the value of £750 from the Christmas Lights Event. It’s virtually impossible to pick up a paper nowadays without some reference to the burgeoning UK wine industry where our quality “British Fizz” (a term coined by a New York bar owner) is winning international awards every step of the way. It’s great to feel part of this in an, admittedly, very small way. Sometimes, just sitting on a log in the vineyard on a clear day brings me close to a real sense of peace - Ah I hear you say, only until HS2 comes to town. Well, maybe it’s just good to enjoy things while we can. Cheers…… A summer postscript: Well, the air frost did hit us at the end of April (and we were not alone – even down as far as the south of France!). The buds were just budding and it took virtually everything. But Nature is a wonderful thing and secondary buds appeared and have caught up remarkably quickly. Chairman the Trustees Marion Clayton thanked Clerk to the Trustees Glenys Newman for all her hard work and contributions over the past 20 years and presented her with a beautiful bouquet. In recognition of her long commitment to the Trust, Glenys was appointed an Honorary Trustee. Glenys has handed over the reins as Clerk to Angela German, who has been shadowing Glenys during this past year to ensure a smooth transition. Lucy Adler and Stephanie Hares from Sparrowhawks Netball Club thanked the Trustees for their support over 3 years. The 2017 grant enabled the Sparrowhawks to set up their Junior Club. Since 2014 the Sparrowhawks have gone from being a one team Club which lost all its games in their first season to a two adult and one junior team Club which has a good reputation within the Aylesbury and District League. Their annual mixed netball tournament takes place on 30 June (see article page 28).

Wendover in the 1950s Editor’s Note: In the May 2018 print edition of Wendover News, Tribute was paid to John Michael Cockle. As promised, these are some of his memories of life in Wendover. I’d leave my home at the King & Queen pub on South Street and straight away I’d bump into Mr Burch and Mr Smith coming out of the H. Wood builders yard. In the joinery shop I’d see Tom Smith and “Dicky’’ Burch, two highly skilled carpenters who would be heading off with their tool bags hanging on their bicycles.

He was a major Wendover character and for many years Church Warden and a Wendover School Governor. He would be seen around Wendover with his yardstick under his arm and his pipe, measuring up for repair work on such places as the Red Lion, the Lord of the Manor’s cottages or Doctor Orme’s house.

Further on my way to school, I would pass the gates of Floyd’s Yard - at one time a blacksmith’s owned by the Floyd Family, sons of whom still lived in the cottage by the entrance to the yard. There I’d also see ‘Fred’ or ‘Wooder’, another of the bosses of H. Wood Builder - but one who preferred to work with the tools rather than in the office. This man was a real painter, decorator and sign writer. His overalls were usually covered in paint, he always wore a black beret and rode a fold up commando bike. He’d been a prisoner of war in World War I and had suffered a bayonet wound. He could tell naughty jokes for days on end without repeating himself, and had painted most of the pictorial pub signs in the Wendover area including at the time the White Swan, Red Lion, King & Queen, and the now-closed Fox at Dunsmore.

I would then move on down the High Street and pass the Crown Post Office: at the rear through the large archway was the sorting office where the postmen would sort their post. The postmen I particularly remember were characters like Mr Watts, Mr Pearce and Frank Kirkland. Further on down South Street, Mr George the collector for ‘Pearl’ Insurance would also be leaving his home (now the children’s nursery) which was Bacombe Lodge, a guest house. Fascinatingly all the local children thought this house to be haunted, with the cellars below ground and the gratings on the footpath were where we thought a hand might reach out and pull you in! The next property belonged to Mr & Mrs Wheeler who also ran a grocer’s shop in the High Street. As I skipped along, the next sight would be Mrs Dean’s sweet shop. Dean’s shop was a child’s delight, and we’d so enjoy purchasing a coloured drink in here for a penny. On some days we queued up outside this shop with our ration books to purchase sweets, which in those days were all on display in enormous glass jars. We would ask for two ounces, the sweets were weighed and then put into a bag. Another treat at Dean’s shop was the fresh bread, or Banbury Buns, and sometimes Smith’s crisps which came with a little blue bag to hold the salt. Everyone knew Mrs Dean and later it was her son Jack who took over the shop with his wife Jean.

The vandals not only trashed the roof and side screens, which have had to be removed, but also attempted to start a fire. That’s no barriers or no cycleways, they are not linked, and the allocated money remains with HS2 Ltd. In the end it will be up to you. RAF Halton Rocket Car Challenge

Children from 12 schools from the area around RAF Halton have taken place in the regional final of ‘Race For The Line’, the building and racing of a self-made Rocket Car. The Regional Final allowed the two fastest teams from each school to visit RAF Halton to race for a place in the National Final. Two schools were forced to drop out at the last minute but the remaining schools brought 19 teams, four pupils per team, to the race. Each team started to design and build their new Rocket Car from scratch under the same rules and parameters as before, making it as light and aerodynamic as possible. The 30

build phase was finished by lunch time with a wide variety of designs and fun ideas on show. All the work and ideas came from the pupils with organiser, Chf Tech Stu Dutton, having to tell numerous teachers to step away often, as they also got engrossed in the new project wanting to produce the best car. After lunch and visiting the Trenchard Museum, the Rocket Car racing started with 19 cars on the starting line, in front of the Tornado on Henderson Parade Square. With the sun out for the day the pupils were in

good vocal form counting down for each car to be Rocket Initiated and sent across the Finish Line. The racing went amazingly well, with only one misfire and one to be re-run after hitting the timing gate due to a gust of wind. The second car raced on the day, team MMA from Chalfonts Community College in Gerrards Cross, were the winners by some way, producing a car that clocked a time of 19.7 milli-seconds (113 mph). They now progress to the National Final on 28 June.

Tribute: Sister Shonat Fiddes All midwives are special, but some are exceptional, and one of the best of those, Shonat Fiddes, died on her 91st birthday, 28 March 2018. Shonat’s friend, Ann Stowers, has been able to confirm that Shonat died peacefully in her own home in Halifax.

stay with the mother throughout labour, and visited new mums and babies every day for a full two weeks after the birth to help with care of both so she had a particularly keen understanding of the issues and difficulties of those early days after birth, and her calm manner and practical support were much appreciated.

Sister Fiddes was a beloved nurse who served Wendover from the late 1950s to 1975 and will be remembered by many for being a “proper, old-fashioned midwife/ District Nurse”. She was born into the fishing community of Old Aberdeen where she grew up. In acknowledgement of this, she was described by her good friend Ann Stowers as “Twinkling Granite”. Her father served as an engineer with the Arctic Convoys but did not return. Her mother refused to admit her for Higher Education so she trained in secretarial and book-keeping. By 19 she had registered for general training as a nurse and then specialised in mid-wifery. She never looked back. A committed Christian, Shonat was only prevented from missionary work by TB. Instead she worked with the Ranyard Mission Nursing service in Kensington - “Call the Midwife” was very much her territory. She worked by the principle that everyone she met should benefit from her care; thus she became part of the family for so many locally both, young and old.

“After working well together for so many years, I was very sad to lose her when she moved from the practice, but many families in Wendover still have happy and grateful memories of her.”

Sister Fiddes was a midwife for Sylvia’s youngest child in 1964. “Not only was she a support during pregnancy and delivery, but also very importantly in the months and years after producing our babies. Drop in sessions at the Health Centre and Monday Club provided gentle advice and a shoulder to cry on. Many of us kept in touch over the years, updating her on our babies and then their babies! Shonat, Sister Fiddes, brought joy to the world and will be missed by many.” wrote Cate Bowley, Clare Owen, and Jane Rutland. Dr Riley remembers: “Quite simply, Sister Fiddes was the best midwife I ever worked with. (As Squadron Leader in charge of Obstetrics and Gynae at RAF Halton Hospital, I had worked with a fair number by the time I moved to take over Obstetrics within the Wendover GP practice in 1957).

Sylvia Levitt, a member of Wendover Free Church, an amalgamation of Wendover Baptist and United Reformed (formerly Congregational) Churches, remembers Shonat as an enthusiastic member of the congregation at Wendover Baptist Church. “We were a good team: she always knew The building is still in South Street. She really will be missed by many.” Shonat Fiddes moved up to Halifax when home deliveries were being phased out in Buckinghamshire, and our loss was Yorkshire’s gain. She was definitely missed when she left Wendover and there is no doubt that she will be sadly missed by those whose lives she touched in Halifax where she retrained to be a Health Visitor when over 50. She continued to be an engaged member of her church, and showing an example of faith in action in the work place. She firmly believed that prayer is work and work is prayer but was always happy to sing for the Lord, too - she joined her first church choir aged 6. Her funeral was at Lee Mount Baptist Church, Halifax, on 27 April.

Freddie moved to Wendover just before his first birthday in 2005 with his parents Tim & Kate and his brother Josh. He enrolled at Little Acorns Kindergarten and worked his way through John Hampden Infant School, Wendover Juniors and is currently enjoying school life at the John Colet School.....well as much as a 13 year old boy would enjoy school anyway!

Having reached this milestone he turned his attention to Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) and joined the McLeod Academy in Aylesbury where he is currently studying various DJing at the Tropicana Beach Club, Mykonos martial arts such as Muay Thai and Combat Submission Wrestling to name a few. Matters Arising Wendover Parish Council Page

View from the Chair

Spring is always busy for Parish Councils. The first meeting of the new financial year is when we vote in our chairman and chairs of committees. I was voted in again so on behalf of the Parish Council I’ll be able to carry on with engaging with the people and the organisations that make Wendover what it is. I have two main objectives when I’m talking about the PC. One is to explain what we do and to show our strengths and to hear about our weaknesses. The other is to get more people involved. Involved in the PC’s projects but more importantly to get involved in the PC itself. In May next year there is an election for the PC, but only if sufficient candidates come forward. It’s my ambition to make sure that the election happens. I hope you have all noticed that the grass cutting team started nice and early and that Wendover looks very smart as a result. The WI brought a problem to our attention. A tree on a verge as a memorial. We now know about this memorial tree at Aylesbury Road/Halton Lane. Do you know of any others? Orchard Update

The Summer orchard visit took place in the first week of May and found some bug damage to the trees as well as Protection for fruit trees some weak trees. The trees have been pruned and blossom removed to allow the energy to go back in to the tree for growth while they are still young. On a positive note there is a new seedling growing so it has been tied to a post to see what it develops into. Looking ahead, a Silent Solder Statue will be installed in the Orchard. The Silent Soldier stands as a tribute to those who didn’t return from the Battlefields of WW1 and to those whose lives would never be the same again. Zip Wire Re-located

The Zip Wire has been moved from the Skate Park in London Road, to Ashbrook Park. This is the first stage of works to improve the facilities for the youth of Wendover. The new Zip Wire location has proved very popular since being re-

sited, and on most days there is a queue of children ready to have some fun! Ashbrook Open Space is a popular choice for young families. WPC Amenities Committee will be considering purchasing more picnic benches for open spaces around Wendover. If you have any thoughts on the matter you can either attend the Amenities Committee meeting on Tuesday 19 June, 7:30pm at St Anne’s Hall, or drop us a line via the contact details below.

Best Kept Village

Don’t forget the judging period starts 1 June and runs through to 7 July. The competition is a great opportunity for the community to celebrate all the positive aspects of life living in W e n d o v e r. WPC will make every effort to keep the village in a clean, tidy, pleasant and presentable condition, but much of the judging is based on Community effort and areas that are beyond the jurisdiction of the Parish Council. Any effort you can make would be very much appreciated, this could be anything from grass cutting, shrub trimming or planting. Winning Towns and Villages will be announced in September.
