School News John Colet OFSTED In response to the John Colet School recent Ofsted report, please find school statement below:“As a school community, we are disappointed by the Ofsted grading, however it does reflect the higher and more focussed expectations placed on schools in the current climate. “Ofsted advised a number of improvements, including the need to achieve higher exam results, especially from the boys, and stronger teaching methods to ensure lessons are inspirational and challenging. “Encouragingly, the behaviour and safety of pupils was assessed as ‘good’, and the school was also complimented on the improvement in Maths which is now judged to be ‘good’. We were delighted that the feedback from parents and carers through ‘Parentview’ to the Ofsted inspection team which was extremely positive and supportive. “John Colet School has always taken great pride in our strong links to the local community, and student preparation for work; unfortunately these are no longer part of the Ofsted assessment criteria. The school remains committed to this work, as we believe by doing so students develop vital leadership and employability skills, however we will still remain focussed on achieving Ofsted recommendations.
“Ofsted findings are already being implemented and a comprehensive plan of action to address the areas requiring improvement has been drafted and will be put into place once approved by Ofsted. Much work is needed to ensure success in fulfilling all the objectives set by Ofsted, however, we are confident with the right effort we can achieve the goals.”
John Colet Wrap Up for Charity Students from the John Colet school, in Wendover, were wrapping up warm at school on Monday 10 February, as they wore colourful scarves in support of the charity Sing2Sign. In addition to this, a Year 11 class has been learning to sign a song as part of a national fundraising, and awareness, initiative on behalf of vulnerable deaf children and adults. Form 11H has been using tutorial time to learn the chosen song, and has been working with the Year 1 and 2 children at the John Hampden Infant school. The older John Colet students have helped to guide the John Hampden pupils through the song, and on Wednesday 5 February they took part in a world record simultaneous sign of the song, with 120,000 other people across the country. All these efforts form the basis for Form 11H’s ‘Make a Difference Week’ contribution. During the academic year, each Form takes a turn at

doing something to ‘make a difference’ for others and their local community, whether it be through fundraising, litter picking or writing to a local MP about an issue of importance. Students were also incredibly excited to perform the song at the Wycombe Swan Theatre, on Monday 10 February. On this day, students wore colourful scarves, as worn by the Sing2Sign monkey mascot Olli, in return for a £1 donation to the Charity. Form tutor Isabelle Simpson said: “As form tutor to 11H I have been incredibly impressed at their attitude towards the project. The students have dedicated free time to learn the song and have helped John Hampden children learn it too. Their enthusiasm has been overwhelming, they have spent hours learning this.” Bronnie, a student from 11H said: “I have really enjoyed the experience and hope to carry on learning sign language in the future and into my career."

Cromptons Cromptons Interiors, on the High Street, has just launched the range of Little Greene paints into Wendover. Ken and Karen, the couple who run the shop, commented, "The Prince of Wales chose these paints for his Arts and Crafts show house at the Ideal Home Exhibition. The range of colours is designed to work particularly well with period properties - although both colours and finishes are beautiful in any kind of property. Little Greene is the kind of high quality, timeless brand that we offer at Cromptons. We think that it fits in very well with the other brands in our shop - fabrics from Sanderson, Harlequin, Romo, Villa Nova, Baker Lifestyle, William Morris, Linwood and Casadeco, blinds and shutters from Luxaflex, and flooring from Alternative Flooring, Westex, Victoria and Ulster Carpets. We love these brands not only because of their up to the minute design but also because of the great support they give us, ranging from meetings with the fabric designers to training in European child safety legislation!" Barneby Gates are doing well with their very clever tessellated dog, stag and fox motifs, which have proved so popular with Shiresdwellers. Available as wallpaper or linen, their designs are an easy and stylish way to update your decor. Lewis & Wood combine traditional methods of block-printing wallpapers & fabrics., with sumptuous, subtle pattern & design. Their super -wide Chinoiserie wallpapers are perfect for small rooms especially, giving a virtually seamless, hand-painted look. Every single element is considered - the paper even feels as soft to the touch as fabric. Osborne & Little are regarded as THE best movers-and-shakers in the design world. Hot-off -the-press are their brand new range of designs, the coolest of which feature ever-popular birds & butterflies, but this time combined with a fresh & modern graphic, botanical monochrome background. L & C HOME IMPROVEMENTS
A trained designer will help you to maximise your budget. "I was helping a lady yesterday with her blinds & curtains" says Trixy. "She wanted great fabrics but didn't want to spend the earth, so I advised her to do her blinds which only use small amounts of fabric - in the expensive designer fabric that she'd fallen in love with, with big sumptuous curtains in an inexpensive fabric that matched perfectly. She was delighted with our plan & can't wait to see them up & fitted! They will look amazing & will have the bespoke touch that Liveluxe is renowned for." Trixy's shop Liveluxe stocks hundreds of fabrics & wallpapers from some of Europe's top design houses. From the amazingly inexpensive, bangup-to-date Clarke & Clarke (100% linens at under £20 per metre) to the blow-the-budget uber-cool Matthew Williamson creations at £175 per metre! Breaking news! Liveluxe has just been granted dealership rights to stock the fantastic new AUTENTICO chalk paint - low-VOC, over 17000 colour combinations, and several finishes, plus it can be sealed to use on floors and in kitchens without any worries about scratches & dents. Painting workshops will be held on the first Sunday of every month in Wendover. Places fill fast so contact Liveluxe to book your place! Wendover Wills Week is back!
Stuart’s Team recognises that we all lead busy lives and there is often a far more pressing work commitment or other family reason why an opportunity to sit down and put a Will in place simply doesn’t arise. During Wendover Wills Week, Stuart’s office is open for a whole 7 days, from 7 in the morning until 7 at night, including Saturday and Sunday so that you can find time for an appointment either when the children are at school, after school, after work or just at the weekend when there might be more time available. We all know that - in truth - we all do need a Will. It’s just that we need something like Wendover Wills Week to make it even easier to set up. My family know what I want….. – if you don’t write a Will, the Law (rather than your family) will decide who takes care of your affairs and who gets what. You should not make assumptions about who will inherit your worldly goods.
This year’s Wendover Wills Week runs from Sunday 9 March to Saturday 15 March.
I don’t need a Will yet – none of us know quite what is “round the corner” and sadly, people can pass away at any age.
Stuart Fantham & Company’s own Wendover Wills Week is the ideal opportunity for you and your loved ones to finally putting a Will into place, right here in your High Street in Wendover.
It’s scary – putting a Will in place isn’t going to kill you! No jargon, no complex wording and no stuffy Solicitor! Let us show you understand how easy writing a Will can be.

Business Forum I’m busy and I work – we fully appreciate that family and work commitments mean it’s hard to fit everything in between 9 and 5. That’s why we are open for longer hours – right from 7 in the morning until 7 at night and on Saturday and Sunday too just to make time for you. It’s expensive – our initial meetings are completely free and completely without obligation. We will provide you with a fixed quotation at our meeting for your personal Will – as a “bonus” for writing during Wendover Wills Week, we will reduce that fixed fee by a further 10%!

In addition it is hoped that there will soon be collecting bins available placed after the checkouts at both Budgens and Tescos Express for those who would like to donate the types of food that will be listed. Petitioning Now that the Consultation on the Environmental Statement has closed (on 27 February), Petitioning is your very last chance to improve the route and construction of HS2 through Wendover. You can submit your own Petition directly to Parliament, where it will be considered by a Select Committee, which can recommend changes to the Hybrid Bill. Your Petition must contain the reasons why the Hybrid Bill will adversely affect you, and your proposals to deal with them. We have suggestions on our website as to what you might want to say. In particular we are pressing hard for a bored tunnel right through Wendover, which you should mention in your Petition. You can Petition individually or with others. We want as many people as possible to Petition, and to be effective we are targeting over 200 submissions from the Wendover area. We will help you – please see our website below for more details. Remember, anyone can Petition, even children. Esmé’s Allstars Wendover resident Esmé has been diagnosed with a rare degenerative illness: Rett Syndrome. Rett Syndrome is caused by a genetic mutation on the X chromosome. This usually happens at the point of conception and is just one of those random things. Only 0.5% of cases are inherited. It affects predominantly girls (boys tend not to survive to birth and even then not till their first birthday) and occurs in 1:12,000 live births worldwide. Typically the child appears perfectly healthy at birth and starts to develop normally. Somewhere between 6-18 months development slows and the child falls behind her peers. Between 12-24 months the girl goes into the recessive phase where skills previously acquired, especially speech, co-ordination and hand use, are lost. All girls with Rett have screaming fits, terrible digestive issues and problems swallowing. Over 80% go on to develop epilepsy and 70% experience severe curvature of the spine. Many never weight bear or walk and of those who do, over 50% lose this ability. Many hyperventilate constantly which in turn places stress on their hearts and leads to chronic heart conditions. Due to the loss of purposeful hand use these girls cannot write or sign to communicate. Mental development is not affected. The girls all develop mentally as they should for their age. It is truly a locked in condition. There is some amazing communication technology that works using eye gaze that helps these girls to "talk" to the outside world. In time we hope to raise enough money for Esmé to have this facility and free her a little from her silent prison. For more information about Esmé’s Allstars and fund raising for Esmé, please click on www.wendovernews.co.uk and search for Esmé.

Wendover Youth Centre Wendover News wasn’t able to print the whole of Wendover Youth Centre’s article in the February edition so here is more information in March. Wendover Youth Centre has been completely reorganised in recent months thanks to the generosity of many donors. The Lionel AbelSmith Trust, The Local Area Forum, Wendover Parish Council and St Mary’s Church have made large grants that, along with the incredible generosity of the ‘Friends of WYC’, wristband wearers, Wharf Café users and community events like the Shoulder of Mutton ‘Party in the Garden’, have transformed our ability to support Wendover’s youth and to provide a rich, varied and growing program. Becky Murgatroyd is already in post as a youth worker and you’ve probably already seen her around and about. She ushered into the February Wendover Parish Council meeting a small group of young people who have led the Local Area Forum survey Thank you very much and please do continue to support us by donning a wristband, joining our ‘Friends’ scheme or simply by hiring the Centre for your children’s party or other event. The Morris Ranges The Morris Ranges, situated on the A413 south out of Wendover, is the home of the Bucks County Rifle Association, is in constant use by rifle teams from all over Bucks, Herts and Beds for 50 and 100 yards, target shooting and is also used as a venue for some Inter-County matches. Target shooting used to be considered a useful adjunct and training school for the regular Armed Forces and Territorials. It was always a working man’s sport as shown by the names of various clubs. The Wendover Rifle Club, for example, use the range facilities for 50 and 100 yard target shooting. This club, I am given to understand, is the largest rifle club in Bucks. They shoot some thirteen teams over the various distances and have a waiting list for would-be members. For more information about Wendover Rifle Club, please visit www.wendoverrifleclub.org.uk Wendover Air Rifle Club has been established for 15 years and uses the facilities at the Morris Ranges. WARC is open on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings for shooters of all ages and cater for both sub-12ft/lb air rifle and pistol enthusiasts. Most members shoot either HFT or FT
disciplines which takes part in the surrounding woodland but there is also a large number of members who enjoy plinking on the 50 and 100 yard ranges. The club holds a number of internal competitions during the year to help improve shooting skills, and also many members take part in external competitions throughout the country.

You Write . . . AVDC Housing Plan
Last year I delivered a letter to households in Wendover and Halton giving my reasons for (Wendover – based) becoming an Independent Councillor. A contributing factor to that change was the Home Visits - 01296 696032 decision of AVDC’s Cabinet to revise downwards Surgery at the the Council planners’ recommended figure of Belmore Centre new homes needed up to 2031 for inclusion in 01296 612361 the Vale of Aylesbury Plan. Inexplicably, the Cabinet decided to reduce that number by 3000. The independent inspector looking at the Plan declared it unsound, resulting in its withdrawal by AVDC. The Inspector made his decision on two grounds - firstly he felt the Council failed in its duty to co-operate with nearby local authorities. At the time, AVDC officers were dealing with constantly changing Government instructions of how to develop a Local Plan and they adopted a mixture of approaches which had delivered results in the past. So although officers have lessons to learn, owing to confusion created by central Government, I lay no specific blame on them. The Cabinet decision which reduced the housing numbers by 3000 is a different matter. The Inspectors comments are clear - because the overall plan is based on delivering 16,000 new jobs, more houses are needed to deliver this
level of job growth! In my view the decision makers – AVDC’s Cabinet - do not come out of this well. Their actions were irresponsible and attempting to justify them on the grounds that this was what the public wanted is not good enough! This debacle has left the District defenceless in planning terms, creating a vacuum into which unscrupulous developers will jump with glee. The unpleasant consequences are much higher housing numbers being foisted on us than originally planned. District Cllr Chris Richards
Bikes think lights revisited I understand and sympathise strongly with the concern expressed by L Jeffery (in February newsletter) over cyclists having no lights or reflective clothing. We should like to take this opportunity of appealing to all cyclists to wear reflective clothing and to use good lights both at the front and rear. Such equipment of good quality is readily available. We would agree that in general, where cycle paths are available, they are the safest option. However, Mr Jeffery is referring specifically to the cycle path from Wendover to Aylesbury (Amber Way). The reduction in street lighting along that stretch of road has made the cycle path hazardous for cyclists at night since they have to contend with the dazzle from car headlamps if they are coming from Aylesbury. We have tried to persuade Bucks County Council

Sharing pavements I have recently had some eye problems. As a consequence my attention has been drawn to the hazards of our pavements. I have also noticed how many residents are having trouble sharing pavements, particularly if they have bad sight, need sticks and frames. Would it be possible for us all to be a bit more aware of each other? Small children on scooters appear to be let loose with little or no pavement instruction, and many bikes are on pavements well away from the cycle paths. On uneven surfaces there is an accident waiting to happen. Perhaps there could be a bit more instruction in the schools for children using bikes and scooters to make them more aware of people trying to traverse certain areas, mainly when the children are going to school and coming back. Apparently people at Bankside are frightened to use Wharf Road at certain times, and they should not be made to feel like that. Cars and buses are also half on and half off the pavement. I do realise the difficulties, but we just need to be more aware of other people and SHARE. Name & address supplied

Richard E Cooper, OBE, JP Richard Cooper OBE has passed away aged 88. He and his late wife Pat had lived in Wendover since 1948 and they both contributed a great deal to village life and the community. Pat`s own family, the Hollands, were well known in the district with her Father, Joe, being Mayor of Aylesbury in the 1950s and her Grandfather owning The Red Lion Hotel and building Wendover School. Dick was born in Lowestoft and on leaving the army after the war he joined his father-in-law in the family business of North & Randall Ltd. Aylesbury, Mineral Water Manufacturers of the town. The turnover was just ÂŁ24,000. Dick together with Pat and her sister Joan, built the business through acquisition and the launch of a South African Soft Drink called HUBBLY BUBBLY, available nationally.
His interests outside business were varied and he contributed much to the local co mmu n ity an d his accomplishments read very impressively: Chairman and Founder Member of Aylesbury Round Table; President of Aylesbury Rotary Club; Founder President of The John Hampden Probus Club; a magistrate for 28 years; Chairman of the Bench and Chairman of the Bucks County Courts Committee, receiving the Order of the British Empire for his services; past member of the Board of Visitors at Aylesbury Prison; past member of Thames Valley Police Authority; Chairman of Aylesbury & District Victim Support; Trustee of Wendover Cricket Club and Life Vice President; Chairman of the Aylesbury Gardening Society.
In the 1970s DAYLA was born and it was a runaway success and not long after The DAYLA Group was formed together with 3 like minded family businesses. DAYLA actually stands for Dick’s AYLesbury Agency. Today it is an all embracing Drinks Distributor and Wine Merchants run by Dick`s son, Tim, together with his sister and brother-in-law, Sue and Peter Lapham. Dick was also involved within his industry sitting on many trade bodies, becoming President of The British Soft Drinks Association.
He was a great after dinner speaker, speaking at many village events and many will remember tales from his great aunt Agatha who of course hailed from Suffolk. Dick and Pat loved Wendover, living in the family home for more than 50 years. They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary last year, just 4 months before Pat sadly passed away. They will both be sorely missed but their family business continues with their family values very much at its heart.

Local Face: Chris Peeler
Chris and his wife, Mary, have lived in this area for nearly fifty years. After six years in Weston Turville, they moved with their family to their present house in Wendover where they have lived for the last 41 years. After leaving school, Chris did national service in the RAF when he studied Russian and qualified as a linguist. He then studied agriculture at university and worked for the Ministry of Agriculture (now DEFRA) for twelve years, ending up as an adviser to farmers in Bucks. Two of these twelve years were spent working for the Ministry of Agriculture in Kenya which had just gained independence. His knowledge of Russian came in handy on one occasion when he acted as interpreter to a Romanian agronomist who was on a visit to Kenya. He then worked for the National Farmers' Union in London for 26 years until his retirement 15 years ago. Since retirement, Chris has been active on a number of local fronts. He was a parish councillor for six years and took a strong interest in transport and road safety as well as maintenance of local footpaths.
Chris and Mary have both actively promoted cycling within the village for the last 14 years and Chris is currently chair of Get Wendover Cycling – the local cycling group
(www.getwendovercycling.org). During this time, a number of substantial improvements have been achieved. Cycle racks are now available in the centre of the village, at the railway station, by the Memorial Hall and elsewhere. Cycle paths have been provided along Aylesbury Road, Tring Road and Manor Road. Get Wendover Cycling enjoys a close and friendly relationship with officials of Bucks County Council and Chris is hoping there will be some significant improvements to the local cycling infrastructure in the not too distant future. However, the cycle path to Aylesbury from Wendover (which is one of the Gemstone routes) requires substantial restoration and the reduction in street lighting has been highly disadvantageous for cyclists. At the present time, GWC is actively striving to have installed some alternative system of lighting. This is essential in order to encourage cyclists to use this very important route after dark. Looking further into the future, Chris would love to see the construction of a boardwalk across the canal which would give safe and direct access to the schools via Victory Road. To mark National Bike Week, Get Wendover Cycling organises a family bike ride in June.
This has been well attended in the past and it is hoped that this event will continue to be staged in future years.
Chris and Mary have a large mature garden and Chris has helped over the last sixteen years to organise “Wendover Open Gardens” and this has raised funds for various charities such as the local wildlife trust, Rennie Grove Hospice Care and Save the Children. They help to run Wendover Bridge Club which meets at the Cricket Pavilion, Witchell and provides useful financial support to the cricket club. Chris and Mary greatly enjoy living in Wendover and consider that it is an ideal place to bring up a family. They have three children all of whom are married and there are now seven grandchildren. Two of their children have worked abroad and this has provided opportunities for Chris and Mary to revisit Kenya three times as well as New Zealand, USA and Holland. But all are now back in the UK – their eldest child, Andrew, lives in Wendover with his wife Fiona and their three grown up children, two of whom are now at university.

Resignation/Vacancy We are sad to report that Oliver Statham has resigned due to ill health. Oliver who joined the Parish Council three years ago has given immeasurable support to the Parish and worked to put our case on various subjects to AVDC and HS2. He is still giving us his support on the HS2 Environmental Statement. Following Cllr Statham’s resignation we will be co-opting a new Councillor in April 2014. If you wish to put your name forward please contact the Clerk and register your interest. Further information on the Council’s website and notice boards.
Next Parish Council Meeting Monday 3 March, 7.45pm Wendover Library Room Precept On 14 January the Parish Council agreed the precept request for 2014/15 with the result that there will be no increase in cost from last year to individual householders for the services they receive from the Parish Council. The precept is the amount of money AVDC collects through the Council Tax on the Parish Council's behalf.
Parking We are currently progressing ‘on-street’ parking options with Bucks CC and looking at improving the ‘off-street’ parking behind the Cricket Club at the Witchell. We also want to improve signage to different parking availability. We hope that these measures will go some way to alleviate the parking problems in the centre of the Village. We are also looking

into whether there is a possibility of having a new car park and would like to know how parking problems affect you. We will consult with the Village if and when we have any further practical options.
Local Produce Market Manor Waste 9am to 1pm Saturday 15 March Manor Waste Survey The Manor Waste is the area around the War Memorial on the High Street. We would like to know if you think this area needs improving and if so, how? A survey will be held during March and April, to have your say either drop into the Clock Tower and complete a survey form or alternatively go to www.surveymonkey.com/s/566TWPY. It is an important shared community area and we want everyone who uses it to play a part in its future.
HS2 Petitioning The HS2 hybrid bill is currently passing through Parliament, with the date of the second reading in the House of Commons yet to be announced. After the second reading campaigners can do little to challenge the bill, but they can argue for changes to the scheme through a process called ‘petitioning’. Individuals and organisations “specially and directly affected” by the HS2 proposals can submit a petition seeking amendment to the Bill. There is a cost of £20 to any person, group or organisation wishing to do so. The Parish Council is keen to encourage as many petitions from the village as
possible. Advice on how to petition can be found at www.parliament.uk/business/ bills-and-legislation/current-bills/hybridbills/
NOTICE OF EXTRAORDINARY COUNCIL MEETING To conform to the requirements of section 239 of the Local Government Act 1972, notice is given that a meeting of Wendover Parish Council will be held at 8.00pm on 18 March 2014 at Wendover Library to consider whether the Parish Council should oppose the High Speed Rail (London – West Midlands) Bill deposited in the Session 2013-14. Subject to the Parish Council resolving to oppose the bill, further resolutions may then be made in connection with opposing and petitioning against the Bill. Spring Charity Market - Sat 26 Apr Arrangements for the Charity Markets have changed due to the Parish Council having no affordable option for providing stalls and tables. Any Charity wanting to have a pitch at the Spring Market on 26th April 2014 on the Manor Waste must provide their own shelter and table. If anyone has a Gazebo or similar and would be willing to lend it out please contact the Clock Tower and they will be put in touch with a charity that needs one.
