3 December Christmas Celebration 6 December

CribFest 1 & 2 December

Christmas is coming . . .

contributions for January 2018 before

Monday 11 December

year we have heard of so many tragedies throughout our world and locally. For many in our community there will be heartache and sadness but the wonderful gift we are given at Christmas is God’s son who cares for each of us. He knows us, loves us and wants us to celebrate with joy at this special time.

I always look forward to the Christmas events that happen during November and into December . . . it’ll be good to be around for the Wendover Christmas Evening on Wednesday 6 December when lots of the shops are open and the lights are turned on. It’s that sort of evening that makes me feel like Christmas is coming . . . and not too early. The commercial world encourages us to be buying earlier and earlier (and bigger and bigger) but for me that takes so much away from A crib made of FIMO in a pistachio nut what Christmas is really about. shell at last year’s Crib Fest, see page 17

We celebrate the birth of Jesus on CHRISTMAS DAY (25th Dec) not in the middle of November!! On that day we welcome the one sent by God to live among us . . . the baby, born of Mary and Joseph, who came to bring a message of love to our world. In 2017 we need to hear that message even louder as during this

Just as the wise men and the shepherds gathered in Bethlehem to see this newborn baby why don’t you look for an opportunity to join the celebrations at the different churches in Wendover . . . you will be made most welcome both by the congregations and by God himself, see page 22.

These bare branches have present tags dangling from them, inviting you to take a tag and provide the present suggested on it. Please wrap your present, add the label and return it to one of the churches or to JUST at 11 High Street, Wendover. The last opportunity to bring your presents is at the Carol Service in St Mary’s on Sunday 17 December. After that, the presents are taken to Aylesbury Women’s Refuge to brighten up a difficult Christmas for anyone who has to seek help at this time. Examples of presents include items for children of all ages including hats, gloves, scarves, toys and for women including toiletries and make-up as the families often leave home with almost nothing. Colds and Flu over the winter Januar y

Book befo re Decem ber

Seasonal colds and flu are already spreading in the local population, especially children, and there are concerns that there will be a significant flu outbreak this winter. If you’re generally fit and healthy, you can usually manage the symptoms of a cold or flu yourself without seeing your GP. Antibiotics are not effective in treating colds and flu and will not normally be prescribed. Please see the “Treatment Room” section of our website (www.westongrove.com) or NHS Choices (www.nhs. uk) for detailed information, including advice on when you should seek medical assistance. Local pharmacies will also offer help with managing the symptoms of colds and flu. This space is paid for by Wendover Health Centre.

Business Forum Christmas has come early for Buckinghamshire and the Chiltern’s oldest independent brewery! The Chiltern Brewery has won 3 top awards for 3 of its ales at The Society of Independent Brewers’ (SIBA) Midlands Beer Awards. Bottled 300s Dark Old Ale 5.0% proved a dark horse indeed winning gold in the Small Pack, Strong Bitters & Pale Ales category. It is described by the Brewery as a robust, full-flavoured ale with real depth of flavour and a long finish”. The bottled beer is also certified gluten free. Draught Chiltern Pale Ale 3.7% - described lovingly by one fan recently as being ‘so perfectly balanced and full of flavour’ was awarded bronze in the Cask Standard Bitters & Pale Ales.

Finally, the judges gave draught Porter, Chiltern Black, a bronze – in the Cask Speciality Mid to Dark Beers section. The Chiltern Brewery’s Head Brewer Tom Jenkinson is thrilled. “Awards such as these really make testament to our years of expertise and our focus on producing the best ales we can. A huge ‘well done’ to the whole team here.” SIBA awards are judged mostly by brewers, industry experts and beer journalists, so are very much seen as the ‘Brewers’ Choice Awards’ by the industry. The quality of entries was once again fantastic according to Competitions Committee Chair Guy Sheppard. See advert page 19.

DECEMBER 1917

Sidney, eight months ago and son Edward On the Eastern Front the fighting between was a prisoner in Turkey. His youngest son, Russia and Germany ended with an Ewart, was serving with the forces in France”. Armistice signed on 15 December at BrestLitovsk. Russia was effectively out of the war. This enabled the Germans to transfer a million men to the Western Front. At Halifax in Nova Scotia the Belgian ship Imo collided with the French ship Mont Blanc. The Mont Blanc, which was loaded with ammunition, caught fire and exploded. Most of Halifax was destroyed and 1,900 people lost their lives. British troops, led by General Allenby, captured Jerusalem from the Turks. James “Jim” Johns, with the Queen’s West View of the level crossing on the Aylesbury Road Surrey Regiment, was killed near Jerusalem circa 1960 by the late artist Brian Payne. on 27 December. He was 23 years old. Jim was the son of Charles and Edith Johns of 3 Nightingale Road. Before the war Jim had served an apprenticeship with Mr Birch, a builder of Perry Street. In his letters home Jim mentioned that he had camped twice in the Garden of Eden and was most impressed with Bethlehem. He was looking forward to having Christmas Dinner in Jerusalem. Gunner Sam Harding, aged 30, died of wounds while serving with the Royal Garrison Artillery. The Bucks Herald reported: “Sam joined up in the early stages of the war. As a boy he worked in the iron foundry and afterwards as a platelayer on the railway. Mr Harding lost another son,

The opening of the Wendover to Halton Light Railway at the end of 1917 relieved the pressure on local roads. The War Office had requisitioned vehicles owned by the Metropolitan Railway and local traders to transport supplies from Wendover station to Halton Camp and this resulted in deeply rutted and muddy roads. As early as 1915 Mr Thomas Read, the Wendover Station master, had put forward a plan for a light railway from Wendover to Halton and his idea was accepted by the directors of the

Metropolitan Board at Baker Street. Thomas Read was awarded £350 with which he bought a house in Chiltern Road. The railway was built in 1917 mainly by German Prisoners of War. The 1.75 mile line, which ran from the north end of Wendover Station to the Camp workshops in Chestnut Avenue, was built in 8 weeks. When the RAF changed from coal to oil fired generators in the late 1950’s the use of the line declined and it was officially closed on 31 March 1963. Traces of the route can still be seen in some of the Lionel Avenue gardens and the crossing gate-posts are next to Ashbrook Park. The School Log Book of December 1917 noted: “His Majesty’s Inspector, Miss Wier, the Physical Exercise Director, visited [the school] to see each teacher put his or her class through their evolutions and Swedish drill and games. Not quite as good as last year was her verdict.” The Wendover Magazine announced “We much regret to say that the cost of paper and printing has increased so greatly that it will be impossible for us to sell this Magazine at 1d per copy in future. The price, commencing in January will be 2d per copy.” Mike Senior & Val Moir Editor’s note: members of the Harding Family made a special effort to return to Wendover for Remembrance Sunday, 12 November and lay crosses for the three brothers who died.

CribFest 1-2 Dec

With the anniversary of the Battle of the Somme in 1916, Lindengate Gardeners used poppy seed heads to make their double decker Christmas Crib. They seemed perfect to tell the story of Jesus who symbolises resurrection and eternal life.

Carol Singers will support CribFest by singing (and signing) on the Manor Waste on the morning of Saturday 2 December, like last year.

Last year, Wendover Free Church organised a very successful Crib Festival. Many local organisations joined in the fun by creating new cribs for the occasion. These included a tiny crib using a pistachio nut shell as the stable and the largest were those used regularly by our local churches during the Christmas Season. Many visitors enjoyed exploring the varied work on display. The 2016 winner was Lindengate and their trophy was awarded during the Christmas Lights Switch On. Their crib was inspired by poppy seed heads found on site during a regular session for gardeners. This year’s CribFest can be visited in St Anne’s Church, Aylesbury Road, HP22 6JG from 3 to 6pm Friday 1 and 10am to 4pm Saturday 2 December. All very welcome.

What is a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA)? An LPA is a legal document that allows trusted people (your attorneys) to make decisions on your behalf. There are separate types for finance and property, and for health and welfare. If you run a business, you can make a separate LPA to appoint attorneys to manage its finances for you.

When is an LPA used? An LPA is generally used when you no longer have the mental capacity to make decisions yourself. However, you can specify that it may be used without you losing mental capacity – for example, you may simply want someone to help you manage your bank account or household bills.

Who needs an LPA? LPAs are recommended for all adults. You don’t have to own your home, be wealthy, have health problems or be in your dotage to need them. However, you must have mental capacity to make one, so it’s better to do it sooner rather than later.

What type of decisions can attorneys make? Typical day-to-day financial decisions might entail operating your bank accounts and using your benefits, pensions and allowances to pay your bills. Health and care decisions may involve helping you to stay in your own home with support from social services if required, finding a good care home if you Who should I appoint as my attorneys? In 2018 we welcome our new associate Tracy Johnson

Tracy qualified from Kings in 1986. She has worked both in general practice and the community dental service (where she treated phobics, children and special needs patients). After this Tracy set up her own dental practice in Winslow in 2001, which fitted in with her family commitments at the time. She eventually sold the practice in 2014 due to the change in family commitments but stayed on working there. She will be joining us for 2 days a week in January 2018. Tracy has 2 daughters and a granddaughter. She has interests in keeping fit with outdoor fitness and obstacle courses.

Saturday 4 November was a great day for Wendover when the newly refurbished Swimming Pool was officially opened. It's so much easier to identify the building opposite John Hampden School in the campus off Wharf Road now that there is bold signage. The Wendover Swimming Pool opened in 1978 as an outdoor pool after many years of fund raising by the Wendover Carnival Committee. In 1997, with funding from local sponsorship, The Wendover Trust and The Lottery Fund, a retractable roof was fitted and purpose built changing rooms were added to allow swimming all the year. Since the start, the Wendover Swimming Pool has been supported by the people of Wendover, their friends and neighbours and local Councils, particularly Buckinghamshire County Council who own the land. The trustees have been working for 4 years to keep the pool open, supported by wonderful volunteers. The refurbishment is the latest stage in this work. Local architect Spencer Guy of Levitate designed this superb facility, delivered by builder Gavin Pratt of Manboro Construction. Our MP, David Lidington, was able to come to cut the ribbon and cut the cake at the official opening ceremony. This was very appropriate as he had been involved in some of the discussions pertinent to the setting up of the new governing body for the pool. Many thanks to Cornelli Sugarcraft for providing the ingredients for the cake which was made by a pool volunteer who is also a skilled Cornelli staff member. See advert page 28.

A Girlguiding Journey

My journey in Girlguiding started before I was even born. 19 years on, after Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and a very small stint at Rangers (I tried!), I am now a Leader in training at 1st Wendover Brownies and have helped out at Sketty Brownies whilst at university in Swansea.

So here I am asking everyone to think about whether they have one evening free to help out in their local community by volunteering in Girlguiding. Not all roles are leadership, and just being there as a helper can allow groups to carry on providing important skills to children and young adults.

Please visit for more information: www.girlguiding.org.uk/get-involved/ Throughout this time, Girlguiding has become-a-volunteer/ enabled me to do lots of things I would Hannah Gillett never have done, including being able to make the best s’mores EVER and on turning RAF Halton Voluntary Band up to a new school, finding a friend I made The members would like to welcome their almost 5 years prior (I’m still in contact with new conductor David Richards to the fold. her to this day). These include: • Devil’s Bit Scabious, grown at Lindengate, vital to the Marsh Fritillary butterfly, under the auspices of Butterfly Conservation in a reintroduction project in Hampshire and with RSPB at Otmoor • Cowslip, the favourite food of the Duke of Burgundy butterfly again via Butterfly Conservation for various sites around the SE of England including the Chilterns • Lindengate is also helping to keep a population of highly endangered black poplar trees healthy by working with AVDC to nurture a new disease resistant strain developed at Kew Gardens

• Similar work on disease resistant elms will help the many species of butterfly that have been affected by the loss of elms across our countryside in the past twenty years The mother and carer of one of the regular Gardeners explained, “I’m amazed by how much work is going on in this one site. My autistic son benefits hugely from having two mornings a week developing his gardening skills at Lindengate, and it makes me very proud to think that, even if he just waters the black poplars on a hot day, he is contributing to such important national conservation work. It’s all down to the intelligent dovetailing of conservation and people projects that goes on constantly at Lindengate.” In recognition of their work for butterflies, Lindengate have been awarded the 2017 Marsh Christian Trust Promotion of Lepidoptera Award by Butterfly Conservation, at the recent Butterfly Conservation AGM. Their contribution was described as tremendous.

Hampden Fields And Woodlands: Do They Matter To Wendover? Hampden Fields is a proposal to build 3,000 houses plus services filling the green gap between Bedgrove, Weston Turville and Stoke Mandeville. Woodlands is a neighbouring development of employment and sports facilities plus 1,100 houses. HF developers are a consortium led by Taylor Wimpey. Woodlands is being brought by Buckinghamshire Advantage, led by AVDC and BCC. See AVDC planning website 16/00424/ AOP and 16/01040/AOP. HF lies some 2 km from Wendover, and Woodlands is further away still. Not exactly on the doorstep, so how much do they matter? Let me explain three reasons why they matter a lot. HF is actually HF2. A very similar application in 2012 was rejected in 2015 by the Secretary of State after public inquiry. You propose, you get turned down. What next? Of course, you change the proposal significantly to address the problems and try again. But a virtually unchanged proposal came back a bare year later. A vigorous community campaign logged 5,000 objections and raised £10,000s to fund professional scrutiny of traffic, air quality, flooding and planning. Despite all this, AVDC agreed (Oct 2017) to pass it, delegating many ‘Section 106’ agreements to AVDC officers to negotiate. Linked to HF on traffic planning, Woodlands went the same way. So here is the first reason why this matters. It is surely wrong that a developer can simply represent a tweaked version of a failed proposal, relying on their resources to overwhelm and outspend reasoned objections. This could happen again, anywhere. A second reason is that the key issues in these proposals impact the entire area south of Aylesbury. Let’s take traffic first. 3,000 dwellings would add 5-6,000 vehicles, with another 1-2,000 from Woodlands. The obvious impacts would be on the A413 Wendover Road and the A41 Aston Clinton Road. Less obvious, though, are the potential wider effects. Figure 5-G from the developer’s report shows HF’s effect on traffic in the centre of Wendover, with increased travel times of up to 191%. Significant disagreements remain over the traffic planning process and results. The 36

Hampden Fields Action Group HFAG www. Nor is traffic the only issue. Woodlands and hampdenfieldsactiongroup.com using only HF face such serious questions over flood BCC and developer data, have challenged: risk that the HF masterplan may need to reallocate space between water management • the inadequacy of the Aylesbury Transport and housing. And the planning report admits Model, e.g. no roadside survey data for that HF will mean coalescence. We are not the A413 Wendover Road! convinced that the questions have been • no like-for-like comparison of cumulative answered. traffic • benefits claimed from extra link roads yet So here’s the final reason why this matters to no account taken of extra traffic from the Wendover. Planning weaknesses can apply housing needed to fund those roads to any development. Issues not addressed • an inflated baseline volume of traffic, objectively and transparently lead to worse chosen, we believe, to make the HF and outcomes. It is not enough for planners simply Woodlands traffic growth seem less to assert confidence, leave major topics to be • traffic growth itself significantly negotiated, and reject challenges. understated, with unconvincing reasons for the reduction HFAG, with welcome support from MP David Lidington, have asked the Secretary Some figures. HF / Woodlands would add of State to ‘call in’ the HF application. A 10% total traffic, not the 6-7% claimed. sound application has nothing to fear from Overloading at Walton Street gyratory (38% independent scrutiny. at morning peak, 20% in the afternoon) is worse than the Inspector turned down (32% What can you do? They runs, missed trains, late-running work can’t do it without you. appointments, pollution. Of course, not all of this is down to HF / Woodlands. But a Chris Webbley stressed network needs better planning, Chairman, especially when public money will go towards Hampden Fields Action Group the new roads. www.hampdenfieldsactiongroup.com Please mention Wendover News when responding to adverts

Local Face: Father Jude Iroh MSP to Savannah, USA, briefly. None of this prepared him for his arrival in Slough just before Christmas 2009. It was the coldest winter for several years. Father Jude has been impressed with the health care available in the UK and the welfare system which helps people who are unemployed to bridge the gap and prevent destitution. He has found his congregations in Slough, High Wycombe and now Aylesbury to be very warm and friendly. He enjoys visiting people in their homes, helping them with their needs and bringing peace. Father Jude is excited to be working with the people of Wendover to build a warm and loving community. Matters Arising Wendover Parish Council Page

View from the Chair

I’m writing this after the Remembrance Sunday Parade. I joined with our community to remember the fallen and to lay a poppy wreath. While those who have served are commemorated, my thoughts always turn to our community. Community is a powerful thing. Community of one sort or another certainly sustains service people while they are away and often the thought of returning home carries them through the toughest of times. Community: people working together to make things better, is vital to Wendover today. I recently attended the reopening of The Wendover Swimming Pool. It’s brilliant, completely refurbished and the improvements were only possible because volunteers got together, garnered cross community support, raised funds and just got on with it. Many volunteer organisations in Wendover are just like The Wendover Swimming Pool, see article pages 26-27. Organisations: have two things in common, a positive and welcoming outlook; and they could use a hand. Every organisation that I meet could use some more helpers, trustees, wardens, councillors, envelope stuffers, drivers, etc. Hundreds of people attended the Remembrance Event in Wendover. People with skills and talents. Imagine if they all decided to find an hour a month to help

their community. What a difference that Council decisions. The Parish Council is trying would make. to engage more with the Community and we had hoped that surveys would be one way Volunteering: is a great way to learn new to achieve this. Please make an effort to skills or to try something different. Make respond to the surveys it is easy enough, just a New Year’s resolution to help out. You’ll go to our website, http://www.wendover-pc. learn a secret then too. Volunteers. They’re gov.uk/ all having a great time. Tom Walsh, Chairman Trees on the Highway: There is still confusion over devolved services as BCC officers Parish Council Meeting have been telling residents that WPC are Tuesday 5 December 7.30pm responsible for the care of highways trees. The Clerk is working with BCC to improve St Anne’s Hall these types of problems and has written Signs and Stickers: The road to Wendover is advice from BCC that they are undertaking a paved with good intentions. It might seem survey of all highways trees in Aylesbury Vale like a good idea. “Let’s stick lots of 30mph and will be scheduling works based on safety stickers all over the place”. It causes a priority. They have agreed that the trees on number of problems though. One problem the Old Tring Road do need a crown lift and comes when we see the stickers on road are no longer telling the public that it is a signs. Official road signs and markings are responsibility of WPC. stipulated in law. Some are lit and nearly all Local Produce Market are retro reflective. Sticking unofficial signs to them reduces their effectiveness, a safety Saturday 16 December, 9am to 1pm issue, and renders them unenforceable, a Manor Waste legal issue. It also creates a hazardous task for whoever has to remove the stickers and, Hampden Pond Fish: Most fish have been if that removal damages the sign, a major removed from the pond due to the low water replacement cost issue. If you are unhappy table and fishing suspended following advice with speed control in Wendover speak to of the Environment Agency. Unfortunately Transport for Bucks or Thames Valley Police. the fish are diseased and due to parasites Please don’t ruin street furniture and put were only permitted to be moved if an people at risk with stickers. empty pond could be found. The alternative was to cull them. Thankfully Weston Turville Surveys: The last survey showed support for Golf Club have such a pond and have agreed a MUGA (multi use games area) on Ashbrook to home the fish while advice is sought on but had too few responses on which to base future action.
