Planning
Planning continues to be a matter of great concern in Wendover and many other communities as the Government allocates housing needs. The result of the Land North of Aylesbury Road (Halton Lane Field) Inquiry was a refusal of the application, see Matters Arising on page 40. There is more information about the RAF closure on pages 24 and 25 and Wendover Neighbourhood Plan, page 29. The HS2 meeting on 6 October is reported on page 16.
Aylesbury Link Road
A link road has been proposed between the A413 at Bedgrove and Lower Road in Stoke Mandeville. Discussions are currently being held with landowners and Stoke Mandeville Parish Council, and a public exhibition of the plans, on Wednesday November 1 from 2pm to 8pm, at Stoke Mandeville Stadium, will allow residents to discuss proposals with the planning team and give their feedback. More details on Wendover News website.
Remembrance Service
The Wendover Branch of the Royal British Legion (HQ in Chiltern Road) is organising the Remembrance Service on Sunday 12 November at 2.30pm on the Manor Waste. All are welcome to remember our war dead. Wendover Remembers continues to commemorate every month of World War One. In this edition it is on page 23. The whole series of articles is available online at www.wendovernews.co.uk, using the search facility.

Judges at the GTA praised its rich, honeyed, brandylike flavour. Tasting notes mention the beautiful golden chestnut colour of the beer. The talented couple celebrated the launch of their new venture, hosting an evening of painting and wine at The Barn, 13 High Street Wendover, with 24 people enjoying a fun-filled evening. Jenny and Garry were overwhelmed with the success of their first event: “This is such an exciting time for us. We both fell in love with art from an early age, in fact that is how we met, so working with people to help them create their own piece of artwork is amazing. The atmosphere on Saturday (30 September) was fantastic and we were full – we even had people coming in from the High Street to have a look! Many of our guests hadn’t painted for years and it was lovely to help them produce a work of art that they were really proud of at the end of the evening.” Garry and Jenny will be hosting more ‘A Brush with Wine’ evenings over the months to come. Wendover Swimming Pool is open! If you have been walking your children to school on the Wharf Road campus, you will have noticed that the swarm of builders and their vans have removed themselves from the scene to reveal a shiny new façade for Wendover Swimming Pool. The refurbishment is now complete and the pool is open for public swimming and swim schools, so you can come and try out for yourselves the wonderful new facilities. You don’t need to be a member to swim. With two changing rooms, including cubicles and lockers, a choice of shower areas, a new disabled changing room and a bigger hall area all built within the existing walls, it is Wendover’s very own Tardis. We are very grateful for everyone involved in the refurbishment
and for those kind donors who helped us make it happen. We would also like to welcome back our lovely volunteers after their well-earned summer off. Sorry – but we need you again now! The Trustees recognize that whilst the pool has been closed, members have not had the benefit of their paid membership. Please check our website if you want to renew, with discounts available due to the pool closure, or for updates on new opening times and other information. You can also look us up on Facebook or email the Trustees if you have any questions. See advert page 14.

People living with dementia are encouraged to participate in every day life with the support of neighbours and friends. The benefits of singing are extolled for many reasons and people living with dementia enjoy the activity as much as anyone else. This year, Wendover Dementia Action Alliance has organised a Dementia Friendly Carol Concert to start at 2.30pm on Sunday 10 December at St Mary’s Church, Wendover.
The singing will be led by Kathy and Pete, who have a wealth of experience providing ‘Singing for the Brain’ in Buckinghamshire through the local branch of the Alzheimer’s Society, https://www.alzheimers.org.uk. had distinguished himself by his gallant conduct on November 13 in a charge; he was mortally wounded in a dismount attack on November 15 and died of his wounds on the following day. The loss to the Regiment is a considerable one”.
On the Western Front the Third Battle of Ypres ended with the capture of the village of Passchendaele by Canadian troops. Total casualties of Third Ypres, British and German, amounted to around 520,000. Also on the Western Front, the Battle of Cambrai began on 20 November. The British used tanks effectively and made significant gains. It was regarded as a great victory and church bells were rung in Britain for the first time in the war. But success was illusory and within days most of the ground gained was lost.
The Bucks Herald also reported: “Frederick William James Moore of the Ox & Bucks was awarded the Military Medal. He showed enormous courage when recovering a Lewis gun buried in a shell crater, cleaning it and turning it on the enemy, keeping them at bay until the line could be readjusted”. Fred, who lived in the Tring Road, died aged 93 and has a memorial in the churchyard.
In Russia, Lenin and Trotsky led the Revolution that brought the Bolsheviks to power. A Communist government was formed and one of its main aims was to pull Russia out of the war.
One Wendover man was killed in November. He was Sergeant Frederick William Pedel, aged 21, of the Royal Bucks Hussars who died of wounds on 16 November 1917. He was the son of Fred Pedel Frederick John Pedel, the licensee of the Railway Hotel, and Emily Pedel. Fred had joined the Bucks Hussars just before his 16th birthday. He was killed near Ramleh (now Ramla) in present day Israel. His elder brother Alfred had been killed in 1915 also at the age of 21. The Bucks Herald published a letter sent to his parents by Fred’s Commanding Officer who wrote ‘You will have heard from the officer commanding your son’s squadron all the details of his death. I write to you as the officer commanding his Regiment to offer you my most sincere sympathy. Sgt. Pedel
In November 1917 the Minister of the Baptist Church the Rev Thomas Joseph Pennell was appointed Chaplain to the Balkan Expeditionary Force and left Wendover for the front where he was attached to the 21st Stationary Hospital, Salonica. The Elders of the Church appealed for friends to rally round and help in the Church’s life and work while the Minister was absent. The Rev Pennell was born in Radnorshire and since coming to Wendover had lived with his wife in The Manse, Bacombe Terrace.
The POW they adopted was Private Glynn of the 17th Middlesex Regiment who was captured in April 1917. His wife and 6 children lived in Haggerston, East London. The Wendover Magazine announced that money received from the sale of waste paper would in future be handed to Mrs Stevens for the food parcel fund. The Magazine appealed to readers to help in this absolutely essential work and hoped that Wendover might be able to adopt or partially adopt another prisoner. Mike Senior and Val Moir During the war the British Red Cross working with the Order of St John, organised, packed, wrapped and despatched over 2.5 million If you have any family reminiscences or food parcels to prisoner of war camps relevant photos you would like to share, abroad. about 10 pounds were delivered fortnightly to every prisoner who had been registered. To defray some of the cost of this commitment, groups were urged to adopt a prisoner and undertake the task of raising the money required to send the Annie Stevens (Mrs 2 parcels each month. This meant they were responsible for collecting and posting the two guineas a month required by the Food Parcels Depot and Mrs Walter Stevens of Aylesbury Road was happy to take on the task.

RAF Halton Closure – We now have a further threat to Wendover. One that could potentially change the nature of Wendover in a far greater way than the new railway once completed. The revised Vale of Aylesbury Local Plan (VALP) has been published and it will be subject to a consultation in November. Ahead of this we have considered the content and have formed some initial reactions - these are set out below. The Wendover Society in principle welcomes any development that will:
ask for a significant proportion of ‘starter homes’ to be provided together with homes to rent. We believe this is necessary to meet the demand from younger families in what is a high price / rent housing area.
have indicated that this may be subject to change in the future. So, in summary our ability to constructively and fully comment is severely hampered by the way plans are being prepared:
The Society believes that any further development that is not supported by its • AVDC have produced a VALP with only an own level of infrastructure (e.g. roads & outline estimate of number of houses - but parking, retail, medical, schooling) will no detail. place intolerable burdens on the already • The MoD (through the Defence overloaded facilities in Wendover. However, 1000 houses at Halton are only a ‘starter for ten’ and comment in the VALP indicates that this number may grow when the Halton Masterplan under preparation is published. We worry about the following in the VALP: “In terms of Wendover, approximately 1,000 homes will come forward during the Plan period at RAF Halton Camp after its closure in 2022. This is considered to be a realistic and somewhat conservative estimate, and the figure could increase as detailed master planning is developed.” An overall cap on the number of new homes is needed so that the effect on Wendover can be fully evaluated.
Where will people park when there are more houses? Will they still come to Wendover?
For instance: • New Primary school provision is planned for the Halton housing. However, no mention is made of Secondary school provision. • What about provision for medical services – doctors / dentists / chemist – is it assumed that the residents will use the existing services in Wendover? • What road improvements will be made? Importantly what parking provision will be made? Existing parking provision is already overloaded.
The good news is that AVDC has, at the No breakdown of the housing provision by present time, maintained the areas of Green type of dwelling is mentioned. We would Belt around Halton and Wendover but they

From Wigmore Hall to Wendover
It’s like a classic dream come true plot from an MGM film – a talented young woman is plucked from obscurity to replace an ailing star and becomes an overnight sensation.
In the case of soprano Milly Forrest, this is not just a fantasy plot. When she signed up to perform as a soloist for Wendover Choral Society’s Christmas concert, Forrest was a music student who helped support her studies by working in the cloakroom of London’s acclaimed Wigmore Hall. As a part-time usher, she also checked tickets, sometimes turned pages for musicians, and gave dawdling concertgoers a five-minute warning.
With only 36 hours’ notice, a nervous but composed Forrest pulled off what music critics have called a “breathtaking” performance of Henry Purcell’s 'If Music be the Food of Love'. Gilhooly said her singing had been “beautiful.” Forrest’s name was all over the national press and she has been offered the chance of a grant to help her continue her graduate studies at the Royal College of Music.
It nearly didn’t happen, however, as the day Gilhooly decided to call her up, Forrest had left her mobile phone at home, finally hearing his series of increasingly urgent messages late in the afternoon. He had decided that if she didn’t reply by 5pm, he would try Then, one late afternoon in August, Forrest someone else. Forrest called at 4.50. received a phone call from John Gilhooly, Wigmore Hall’s artistic director, who had Milly Forrest performs with Wendover Choral heard “good vibes” about her singing and Society, singing Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, on asked her if she would stand in for Welsh 9 December at St Mary’s Church. Thank you to everyone who was able to support the children at our Harvest Festival service in St Mary’s Church. It was wonderful to hear the children and adults singing so well and to hear the children’s thoughts about being grateful for what we have at this time of year. Your generous donations will, I am sure, make a real difference to those in need. Revd Moring has already begun working with us through collective worship and as a member of our governing body. We look forward to further strengthening our links with the local church and community this year. The school is looking vibrant with many of our displays showing our new work on Emotional Intelligence. It was lovely to welcome so many parents into school at our first Meet the Teacher session – thank you for your kind and supportive comments. One of our focus areas this year is enterprise. A good number of our children have already taken responsibility for their own lunchtime clubs and for raising money for charities. If you would like to be a school governor, or to give just a little time as a volunteer, then please contact the school office: admin@ wendoverjunior.co.uk. Gareth Mirams, Headteacher

We cannot believe that a whole half term has whizzed by already. Our children have settled into the new school year beautifully and have relished the challenges that a new academic year brings. So far the first half term has involved Class Induction Meetings with parents, a Growth Mindset Curriculum Evening, Open Morning for prospective parents, Maths Workshops in Foundation Stage, Year 1 and Year 2, Roald Dahl Dress Up Day, Red White and Blue Day, Harvest singing for Foundation Stage, Harvest Festival for Year 1 and Year 2 and Ice Cream Day. We look forward to linking with the community during our upcoming Health and Safety Weeks. Being an infant school, our pupils are fortunate to have the opportunity to take on roles of responsibility earlier than in some combined schools. This year we have chosen to focus on providing as many opportunities
as possible for our oldest pupils to nurture and support the younger children in the school. This started on the very first day of term when we selected a number of Year Two pupils to support the Foundation Stage pupils as they stayed for lunch at school for the first time. Year Two pupils were keen to offer their assistance in the dining hall, supporting the Foundation Stage classes in different ways. These included; accompanying them back to their cloakroom to fetch coats, putting lunchboxes away, reminding them of where to find the toilets and directing them to the playground. They also offered a helping hand to those in search of a friend. They did a marvellous job and we are very proud of the school values they demonstrated while performing this role. 30 Hours Next half term we look forward to organising our Early Years Class for January. The Early Years Class offers children who are four, or who will be four in the Spring Term, 15 hour funded sessions Monday to Friday from 8.45 am - 12.15pm. In addition to this, if numbers permit, we will offer 30 hours which includes afternoon provision and a chargeable lunchtime. There is also the option for additional paid sessions for parents who do not qualify for 30 hours funding. The afternoon session will finish at 3.15pm. The Early Years Class has been established for many years now – we are very excited at the prospect of extending it. We welcome enquiries as there are a few places available for January.

Wendover Junior Football Club
The season has started off well for the club, both on and off the pitch, and we have a new committee in place as we look to achieve Charter Standard. The Club runs age groups from Under 6’s through to Under 16’s with just over 330 players. Our matches are mainly on Sunday mornings and we use the pitches at the schools in Wendover as well as the facilities at RAF Halton. Our Under 6’s to Under 11’s train on Saturday mornings at the Wendover Junior & John Colet schools. The Clubhouse is open providing a selection of refreshments as well as the ever popular BBQ. The Clubhouse will also be open on Sunday mornings to offer home and away fans refreshments and somewhere for parents to shelter from the weather. New players are always welcome; you can contact the club via our website www. wendoverjuniorfootball.org.uk or follow us on Facebook @WendoverJuniorFootball or Twitter @WendoverJuniors.

RAF Halton A number of volunteers, mostly ex-RAF, work at RAF Halton in the Trenchard Museum and the James McCudden Flight Heritage Centre (JMFHC). They look after the exhibits and deliver museum tours for both station personnel and visitors alike. One of the volunteers is retired Sqn Ldr Phil Humphrey who is building his own light aircraft, a Pietenpol Air Camper, in the JMFHC. The Air Camper is a 2-seat 1929 American design. Phil recently took his aircraft to the Light Aircraft Association (LAA) national rally at Sywell, Northants, where he was awarded the Albert Codling trophy for the best partbuilt aeroplane. The trophy will be formally presented at the LAA AGM in October. To be able to build his own aircraft Phil had to register the project with the LAA – they hold authority to oversee the construction of amateur-built aircraft in UK. White Ribbon Campaign International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women: 25 November 2017 In 1999, The United Nations officially recognised 25 November as International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. Each year, this date marks 16 days of activism against gender based violence, ending on Human Rights Day on 10 December. The White Ribbon Campaign runs during this time. Men and boys are encouraged to wear a white ribbon to demonstrate their opposition to men’s violence against women. Wearing a white ribbon is seen as a personal pledge never to commit, condone or remain silent about violence against women. www.whiteribboncampaign.co.uk If you have experienced abuse within a relationship or know someone who has, there are local services which can offer women support. In an emergency always call 999.
Often the first step to breaking the cycle of abuse is sharing your problem with another person whether that is through a helpline, outreach worker or support group. HS2 meeting
The HS2 meeting arranged by the Parish Council and The Wendover Society on Friday 6 October was very well attended with many interesting questions being asked although little new information was forthcoming from the HS2 team. What did transpire however was quite how many decisions will have to be agreed with County and District Councils especially during the construction stage. What a pity then that neither County or District Councillors chose to attend such an important meeting . Elizabeth Richards

Tribute: Eric Miller Eric Miller, an appreciation Eric Miller, or Dusty as so many knew him, had a seemingly endless supply of jokes that he tailored to his audience be they child or adult. So often when we met Eric would say “Here, did you hear the one about..?” Eric was born locally and spent most of his life in the area. His national service was spent in Britain, although he was on standby for Malaya, and those two years provided him with much fuel for his many jokes. In later years he became a football referee in the Aylesbury Sunday Combination matches, later becoming a football referee assessor only giving this up due to his illness. Eric had a wide range of interests which included shooting where he became Chairman and then President of the Wendover Rifle Club. Professionally, he was an Environmental Health Officer with Bucks County Council, a job which took him out and about meeting all manner of people, many of whom became useful contacts and friends. And for many years he enjoyed being a Justice of the Peace sitting on the Aylesbury Bench, a voluntary role, which I found useful when job hunting and needing a character referee. At Quainton Dusty was an early Trustee holding the positions of Vice Chairman and Fund Raising Officer who ran and promoted the annual raffle - and he was instrumental in halting the proposed sale of GWR 7200 at an EGM, forming the 7200 Trust and becoming its first Hon Secretary. He acted as a Santa at Christmas for a good many years and was elected as one of our three Vice Presidents. Over the years he applied for a wide range of grants for all sorts of projects, notably assisting the late Andrew Bratton last year in obtaining a substantial amount to repair and repaint our Romney buildings. Eric was very much a people person who enjoyed his self-appointed role of selling raffle tickets from his satchel as he wandered amongst our visitors every Sunday afternoon wearing his trademark flat cap. Dusty and will always remember him for his long jokes, usually delivered quietly and which frequently concluded with his own, distinctive chuckle. He is survived by his wife and three children to whom we send our sincere condolences. Tony Lyster, Bucks Rail Centre, Quainton Mr Eric Miller was a student of Aylesbury Grammar School between 1945 and 1950, in Ridley House. He was involved in School life as an Old Aylesburian for many years and in recent years we were fortunate to welcome Eric back to School to lay a wreath on the School memorial at our Middle School assembly to celebrate Remembrance Day. Each year Eric spoke vividly about Aylesbury in the 1920s, his father’s experiences during the Great War, his personal reminiscences of the war and the huge sacrifice made by the many thousands who fought for this country. We are hugely grateful to Eric for taking the time to share his insight and poignant memories with our student community. Local Face: Vaughan Davies Vaughan and his family moved to Wendover in 2000, but it was a return to old haunts. He first stepped onto the platform of Wendover Station in January 1964 to start a three-year Aircraft Apprenticeship at Royal Air Force Halton. The town’s pubs became the first port of call when given time off at the camp. Many have now gone or have transformed into something new, for example the Rose and Crown on the old Tring Road has now given way to housing and the Four Seasons Pub is now a curry house. Wendover’s new library was still on the drawing board. It was a great start to life for those who passed through Halton. Vaughan joined the 106th Entry, the last of the original Aircraft Apprentice ‘Trenchard’s Brats’ entries, formed by Lord Trenchard after World War 1. Training as an Aircraft Electrical Fitter he will never forget ‘marching to work’ behind either a Pipe or Brass Band to and from the Workshops and Schools either side of Chestnut Avenue, crossing Main Point where traffic had to queue twice a day while hundreds of youths aged between 16 and 19 years had crossed. Ceremonial duties included route-lining in Whitehall on State Visits and marching in Sir Winston Churchill’s funeral in 1965. He fenced for Training Command, winning a Bronze Medal at the inter-services Royal Tournament. Graduating in December 1966, he was posted to RAF Brize Norton, servicing VC10s. During his time there he studied for an HNC at Oxford Polytechnic (now Oxford Brookes Uni) and qualified in Applied Electronics, Digital Computers and Microwave Engineering. In 1973 he was posted to Scampton on photo reconnaissance Vulcans.
In 1974 Vaughan saw the first opportunities of the ‘digital age’ outside RAF life and joined Linotype-Paul, a phototypesetting systems company revolutionising the hot metal printing industry. Many installations during 1974 to 1976 took him to major newspaper and book publishing companies in Europe which led to a contract in Copenhagen, where he lived between 1976 and 1978.
move to community library status, with professional library staff assisted by trained local volunteers. As a Freemason since 1992, Vaughan saw the opportunity ‘to put something back into the community’, training as a Counter Assistant along with about 30 others. He became a Trustee and one of the founder members of the Friends of Wendover Library (FOWL) and sought funding from Buckinghamshire Freemasons for the installation of an interactive touch-screen presentation facility in the Meeting Room. FOWL then funded a Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound System to form ‘On Screen’, which holds a very successful cinema experience open to everyone in the community on the third Friday of each month. FOWL welcomed the opportunity to have the ‘Wendover Remembers’ wallhanging permanently displayed in the library and Vaughan worked with all contributors to oversee its final unveiling last year.
He manages IT issues including communications, membership subscriptions, “Learn my Way” computer training at the Library library website, newsletter, as well as the yearly photo competition and leading to the Returning to England and settling in Chesham, annual calendar and helps at the ‘Learn My he became a systems engineer at CASE Way’ computer sessions on the first Tuesday communications. Matters Arising Wendover Parish Council Page
View from the Chair
The difference between a problem and an opportunity can be a subtle one. It often depends how we view things. Most people who view the closure of RAF Halton see the problem: more houses, more traffic, more pressure on schools and services. There are positives though and Wendover is going to need a positive attitude as we pick our way through the future. Being Chairman of the Parish Council allows me to work closely with our professional staff. These are the people who deliver the services, the markets, the safe and interesting play facilities, the allotments, our streetlights, litter picking and a host of other services that make Wendover tick. They are also the people who find things out for us and answer our questions.

Hampden Meadow and Ashbrook
As the appointed contractor has ceased trading, Amersham Town Council will finish the grass cutting for this season. Rather than contract out this work, it has been decided by the Council that it will be more cost effective to employ another groundsman Currently they’re supporting my efforts who can not only deal with grass cutting, but on HS2 mitigation; keeping an eye on the also other roadside matters such as weeds, Neighbourhood Plan and VALP process; which we know have been a recent bugbear! organising the Village Quiz and preparing our Christmas events. While doing all of this they also organise the Council’s committees; Charity Stalls look after the website; keep the finances Free spaces for charity stalls are available straight plus supervise the maintenance and at both the Weekly Market and the Local Produce Markets, for which in some improvements of our facilities. circumstances, a table and gazebo can be Councillors take ideas forward to become provided. Spaces must be booked through decisions but it’s our staff that deliver most the Parish Council and stall holders are expected to stay for the full market opening of the outcomes. The roof of the Hampden Meadow shelter has been renewed and the walls have been painted. The swings in the play areas at Hampden Meadow and Ashbrook have been repaired or replaced.
Surveys
By the copy date for this issue of Wendover News the survey on ‘Events” had only received 10 responses. The new survey is about the interest in Parish services for young people. Questions will aim to ask opinions on the skate park and a potential MUGA for Ashbrook. A MUGA is a multi use games area, allowing different sports to be played on a single surface. The survey will close on 18 December for results to be reported to the full Council at its January meeting. Please make an effort to take part as this is one of the ways we find out about Community interest. The survey is on the PC Did you know . . . ?
