SEPTEMBER 1915
On land, at sea and in the air the war continued. Heavy fighting took place on the Western Front with the French offensive in the Champagne area and the supporting British attack at Loos. At Loos, the British used chlorine gas for the first time. The attack was only partially successful and British casualties amounted to 43,000. In the Aegean Sea the British transport ship, the Southland, was torpedoed and, several days later, the Ramazan was sunk by a German submarine with the loss of 300 Indian troops. Zeppelin raids on the east coast of England resulted in 7 dead and 50 injured. A Zeppelin raid on London killed 20 and wounded 86.

On 4 September, Murray Ford wrote that “M”’s response “read like a waster’s excuse for the slackers. It is impossible to believe such an unpatriotic effusion was ever penned by an Englishman. ‘M’ may be an enemy alien and therefore is not required to do his bit. Certainly, his anonymity proves him to be no British man, for a Briton is not ashamed of his name”. “M” replied by questioning Murray Ford’s patriotism because “he had in his employ a fit man under 30 years of age who should have joined the army but had been encouraged not to do so”. Meanwhile, soldiers billeted in the Wendover area found various ways of relaxing. In September 1915 the Bucks Herald recorded that a group of six bellringing enthusiasts rang 1,260 changes in 40 minutes on the bells of St Mary’s Church. This was acclaimed as a record in the bell-ringing world. The six soldiers belonged to six different Regiments and came from six different counties – the 4th Royal Berks, the 4th Devonshires, the 4th Royal Sussex, the 5th Somersets, the 4th Duke of Cornwall’s and the 5th Gloucesters. An appeal by the Wendover author Thomas Murray Ford for men to join the Bucks Volunteers and train in his grounds at Scrubwood prompted an acrimonious response from a mysterious “M” also of Scrubwood. “M” stated that to be of any military use the Volunteers would require efficient officers and drill instructors. “M” was convinced that these could not be Thomas Murray Ford, reproduced by kind found and without such leadership, the permission of Peter Jewell

came Murray Ford : “...the man in question was married with a family and although quite ready to serve in the army would not enlist so long as the supply of unmarried men was adequate. In this he has my most hearty approval and support”. Scrubwood was clearly an exciting place of strong feelings and argument. Murray Ford himself volunteered for military service at the age of 60, deliberately falsifying his age. Bank opening hours were in the news in September. The Bucks Advertiser published the following information: “The Union of London and Smiths Bank Limited now opens daily except Thursdays from 10am to 2.30pm. On Thursday 9.30 to 11am”. The “Smith” part of this Bank had a strong local connection as its founder was a member of the Smith family who owned the Wendover estate and were the Lords of the Manor. Abel Smith (1717-1788) was one of the leading bankers of his time. His son, Robert was also a banker and MP and became the first Lord Carrington. When, in 1797, he took his seat in the House of Lords all the other members walked out. “He was in trade, you see”. In September, the long-awaited Public Convenience was opened in Back Street. Youth International Citizenship
I am Kate Reed and I am fundraising £1,500 for VSO. This is part of an International Citizenship Service (ICS) programme for 18-25 year olds that I am doing in October. For 12 weeks I’ll be working with the NGO Pravah alongside volunteers from India in a tribal community in rural Madhya Pradesh. My project focuses on rehabilitating children who have been subjected to child labour and trafficking, reinstating the priority of education in communities.
I will also be completing an Action at Home project when I return, getting involved in
my community and developing the skills I have learnt as a volunteer and raising awareness about not only my project but the ICS programme. On Thursday 13 July, I had a cake stall at Wendover Market. This summer at the Youth Centre, we offered some street dance led by Premier Sports. It was a great atmosphere and the young people who attended worked hard to come up with a very impressive routine. We also led some drama workshops, a session at Wendover Pool, paint balling and a trip to Thorpe Park with RAF Halton. Youth This term we will be launching a film project with Wendover News’ Editor, Jane Larkham, working with young people to connect with Wendover Remembers and what it meant to be young and in Wendover in World War One. We are also looking at launching a dinner and discussion group on a Friday between 5-6:30pm, primarily with young people at St Mary’s, however this is an open invitation for those in year 9-13 to come and chat about faith and life issues. The Wendover CE Junior School has moved forward significantly in the last eighteen months. Standards are high in all areas with

If you feel too awkward or embarrassed about asking for help constantly in front of the class, don’t hesitate to talk to the teacher after class and explain what you need help on. Teachers are more than willing to help in class or individually, so please don’t forget that the teachers are there to help in any way.

It’s important to control these situations so that you are not distracted from working towards exams. Keep the arguments and tension at a bare minimum as these issues are at the top of the distraction list. I think what is most important is to keep trying. Never give up on your work and don’t think “I can’t do this” – it will turn out okay if you put the effort in. This article isn’t by an A* perfect student. Wendover Celebrates returns in 2016 and this time we’ll be celebrating festival style. Festivals traditionally mean a community coming together to celebrate and focus on one particular event, but more recently festivals have become an entrenched part of British life. From May through to August you can find festivals running up and down the UK to cater for every interest, demographic and taste.

What’s happened to St Mary’s Shop?
Since 2004, Churches Together in Wendover have had a presence on the High Street through the @stmarys shop and office. After ten years of building up and running a fabulous Fairtrade shop, St Mary’s decided to renew the lease in 2014 and to give the shop a facelift. HS2 The whole HS2 project seems to have generated a lot of activity over the last two months and seems set to continue doing so over the next couple of months as well.
The Select Committee heard the last petitioners (REPA) on 21 July. So just tell them what you want (eg a fully bored tunnel through the AONB) and how HS2 will personally impact you. Of course if you are nervous and do not want to appear by yourself you could group with other petitioners to jointly appear. If it is too much, you associate with another petition, which means you support their petition and you do not have to appear. Now the deadline for making this decision was apparently 21 August, however I am confident the clerks office to the Select Committee will allow changes up to say 4 September. If you really have had enough then don’t be a ‘no show’ by not turning up, rather associate with someone else’s petition so at least you have added your weight to their petition. So act now. The PACE Centre’s annual Golf Day is on Thursday 24 September at Buckingham Golf Club. The 18 hole, 6,162 yards, Par 71 Parkland Course offers a fair but challenging test to golfers of all abilities. The Club’s desire to offer the best possible golfing experience has been enhanced by the recent replacement of all 18 greens with new greens built to USGA specification. The clubhouse will open from 10am. Up to twenty teams of 4 will play to Stableford Rules with a start from two holes. On Saturday 8 August, Aylesbury Waterside Theatre celebrated their 5th year anniversary and this year’s Pantomime by completing the Whittington Walk: 52 miles from Aylesbury to London. Despite the scorching heat the team came in 2.5 hours ahead of schedule at 11.30pm on Westminster Bridge – after a solid 19.5 hours of walking. To date just over £4k has been raised for Florrie’s Children’s Team – a local charity caring for terminally sick children and their families. Lindengate New pergola for Wendover Library
In early August a project that has been part of the partnership between Lindengate and Friends of Wendover Library (FOWL) came to fruition. A new pergola has been installed in the courtyard garden to provide shade and help create a more inviting area for library visitors to relax in.

Perch Spinney My wife and I decided to purchase Perch Spinney, near Perch Bridge on Halton Lane, in order to guarantee that it would remain a woodland, and that no new owner, or change in legislation could alter this status, see page 21, August edition of Wendover News. On joining the Small Woodlands Group, I was directed to make contact with John Morris, Director of the Chiltern Woodlands Project, for help on how best to manage the woods. With his advice, we are starting a woodland management programme. In conjunction with Rights of Way, Bucks County Council, we have had onsite visits in July and August in order to establish an easy access footpath, a safe link between the reservoir footpath and the canal for the public. On no occasion have we sought to block, barricade or stop members of the public accessing the woods. However, due to our desire to manage and regenerate the woodland, we do need to see some management of public access. To that end, we are seeking to work with the County Council to create a new easy access footpath, running parallel to Halton Lane. We are also already contacting local schools, Beavers, Brownies etc in order to see if they would be interested in using our woodland
for forest schools and other educational purposes. I am also very open to discuss with local groups who may wish to use it for talk, studies etc. Michael Coe

The management, aimed at selectively felling trees to bring light back into the woodland and enable new tree and shrub growth, will benefit the whole woodland ecosystem from the flowering plants on the woodland floor, the insects that feed on them and the birds and mammals which will feed and find their homes on the woodland floor and in the trees and shrubs. John Hampden’s Bottled Golden Harvest Ale John Hampden’s Golden Harvest Ale 4.8% vol from The Chiltern Brewery has won ‘Best Bottled IPA’ category at this year’s Farm Produce Awards organized by top magazine title, Great British Food. The final winner in the Best Bottled IPA category was selected by renowned beer writer and beer sommelier Sophie Atherton. Her favourable comments included, “This beer managed to draw me in by having the best aroma of all the finalists. Dried, fruity flavours are not normally associated with IPAs but here they led to a dry, spicy and peppery hoppy finish - in a pleasantly astringent beer. Most importantly I wanted to drink more!”

Katrina Turnbull and her two daughters Katie and Lena are the “Three Hearts” named in this new family business. They have other family living in the area already so the move to Wendover seemed obvious. The much anticipated opening of our own Spanish Tapas Bar Tres Corozones at 4 Pound Street will happen in early September. Katrina ran an award winning Tapas Bar for 15 years in the North of England so she brings a lot of experience with her. Paid too much for water?
With reference to the article in Wendover News August 2014, and action by Tom Walsh who was being charged by Thames Water for Surface Water Drainage when no water from
his property was entering Thames Water Sewer. His claim for a rebate on his monthly bill was successful; I also claimed and my monthly bill was reduced from January 2014. The Surface Water Drainage overcharge rebate, since 2001, by Thames Water was initially unsuccessful but the Water Consumers Council contacted Thames Water who agreed to backdate overpayments (2008 - 2013). I have contacted Thames Water several times (August 2014 - May 2015) and they assured me that the Thames Water Council is considering the backdated claim (Rebecca Langley, TW Customer Agent 0845 6140086, w w w.thameswater.co.uk/contactus). However, to date Thames Water have not finalised a backdate rebate. Perhaps other Wendover residents have claimed for rebate, or if not they might consider contacting Thames Water to claim a rebate? Wendover FC Annual 5-a-side Tourney for. The semi finals saw last year’s runners-up After a fantastic season which saw the 1st team winning the league with an outstanding 100% home record, and thus being promoted to the Premier League, we held our annual 5 a side tournament on Saturday 1 August. With teams entering from around the vale, the event always brings family fun and excitement to the club. The day kicked off beautifully with the sun shining on the John Colet playing fields, BBQ sizzling, bar stocked, footballs out and a special appearance from The Works, Aylesbury, who brought down a selection of their fabulous ice creams for all to enjoy. 15 teams entered, all with players brimming with quality so it was anyone’s tournament to conquer. Both last year’s finalists were back again to take another shot at victory but this year facing new rivals. With a zero tolerance rule in place for foul and abusive behaviour, there was a great spirit upheld by all teams who took part.

Club Corner Wendover Toddlers
Wendover Toddlers runs every Monday during term time, 1.30-3pm in the Wendover Memorial Hall, and is aimed at babies and toddlers aged 0-5. We offer a fun friendly atmosphere with a baby corner, crafts, toys, tea/coffee and healthy snack. Starting back on 7 September, we have some exciting upcoming events including free trial sessions with Sing & Sign on 14 September and Simon Says Magic on 28 September. Lots more events to be announced.
Too many cold and wet nights and too few people out and about. We did have a couple of really good Tuesday evenings out but only a couple. However, the appallingly long trip to Cumbria led to a Saturday that was brilliant in so many ways. Weather, dancing, food, liquid refreshment and the camp site made it all worthwhile. The Furness peninsula offers fantastic countryside and we can’t wait to go back for another tour. Then there was the final evening out with St Albans’ MM at Frithsden at a lovely and welcoming pub.

Wendover Cricket Club
Wendover Cricket Club have had mixed performances recently. The 1st XI in the Mid Bucks League Division 1 suffered a heavy defeat at Potten End, but followed it with 4 victories. The 2nd XI made a game of it in League Division 2 v Ballinger; however Ballinger won by 3 wickets. We lost by 42 runs to Frieth and also lost by 30 runs v Widmer. The Sunday team had an amazing victory at Chipperfield where the home side made 231 for 6, before Wendover romped to a 9-wicket victory.

Station Commander, Group Captain Adrian Burns, joined Halton House President of the Mess Committee, Squadron Leader Andrew Crabtree, and a number of mixed naval ranks and rates, to “Splice The Mainbrace” recently in celebration of the birth of HRH Princess Charlotte of Cambridge. In Naval tradition, each consumed a tot of rum to toast the new royal baby. Leading Writer Lynn Westhead, who attended the ceremony, said: “I have ‘Spliced the Mainbrace’ on ships a few times in my Royal Navy career, and there can’t be many Royal Naval personnel who have ‘Spliced’ in an RAF establishment, so it was something a bit special. There is only a handful of Royal Naval and Royal Marine personnel based here at Halton so it was nice that we all got together to take part in a Naval tradition.” “Splice the Mainbrace” is an order given aboard naval vessels to issue the crew with
a drink. Originally an order for one of the most difficult emergency repair jobs aboard a sailing ship, it became a euphemism for authorized celebratory drinking afterward, and then the name of an order to grant the crew an extra ration of rum or grog. Eventually, the order to “Splice the Mainbrace” came to mean that the crew would receive an extra ration of rum, and was issued on special occasions: after victory in battle, the change of a monarch, a royal birth, a royal wedding or an inspection of the fleet. In cases where the whole fleet was to receive the signal, it would be run up with a lift of flags or signalled by semaphore.

Tribute: Oliver Statham Thirty three years ago we became neighbours and friends of Anne and Oliver, and it was Oliver who persuaded me to join the committee of The Wendover Society. During the 16 years we served together, many hours were spent preparing for 3 important Public Enquiries into the future development of Wendover. By the time of the second Enquiry, rules had changed and the Society was allowed to brief the QC itself, which is when the hard work really began. Four of us including Oliver, plus the Chairman of the Parish Council, met evening after evening to prepare our case – Bordeaux briefings, I think we called them!!. Until we invested in a Society laptop, I would write up the report and dash round to Oliver who was such a wizard at spotting improvements in clarity. It was seldom that a document came back without alteration. If it did, I gave myself an A*!!! A major triumph was to get the Green Belt line fixed at the Canal rather than the stream which gave Oliver enormous satisfaction given his love of the footpaths with which he was so familiar. Several years later, almost the same team presented its case against the overdevelopment of the Princess Mary Hospital site – again with Oliver acting as arbiter on facts presented as evidence. Being an acknowledged stickler for detail, Oliver would ask for yet another rewrite. We heaved a sigh but did it anyway. The major triumph this time was to get the housing numbers reduced from 600 to 400 – a victory, especially for Oliver who always maintained that homes should be appropriate to their setting.

I worked with Oliver for just over 5 years but I knew of Anne and Oliver for much longer than that. After I had been elected to the Parish Council I arranged to introduce myself to all my co-councillors. One of the first visits that I made was to see Anne and Oliver. We sat in the kitchen where Oliver told me that he probably would not be able to help all that much as he was quite an ill man and had multiple medical conditions. That was my first introduction to the honesty of the man.

Invariably he would be at meetings where anything to do with Planning, Parking and the beauty of Wendover was concerned. As a co-councillor one particular thing that I liked about Oliver was his behaviour in meetings. If there was a key question to be asked he would ask it – in his loud booming voice. I had no problem in identifying who was speaking. Oliver’s style was his own and he would often cut out formality to get to the bottom of something Oliver was a very kind person and was never afraid to admit when he was wrong. In 2012 when the Queen’s Jubilee and Olympics were being celebrated in Wendover, Oliver was reluctant to accept that the planned event might be a success and deserve some funding. After the Wendover Celebrates event had taken place and had successfully exceeded all expectations, Oliver was the first person to approach me, having seen thousands of people enjoying themselves, to congratulate me and the team on a successful event and admit that he had been wrong. That very night his verbal comments were followed up by an email
Personally I will miss Oliver who only a short time ago became one of my friends. He was straight talking, quick witted and an engineer – three excellent qualities to be found in the man. Local Face: Declan Cullen Declan Cullen will be well known to younger including BBC Radio 1, Radio 2, 6 music and readers of Wendover News as he was born XFM in the UK as well as us having their music in Stoke Mandeville Hospital in November featured in major film syncs in Hollywood. 1993 and has lived in Wendover all his life in between travelling and working abroad. He is now a fashion model and musician.
Late last year, Coastal Cities sadly split up (for various reasons) but since then Declan has started a new solo group called I.D.O.L.
Declan started learning guitar at the age of 8 because he has always had a great passion for music. He has subsequently developed his musical skills by learning many different instruments, singing in bands and performing live. While studying at The Misbourne he formed his first band Coastal Cities. From coming together as teenagers, they decided to try and create music that was edgy and alternative but to ultimately be a band that followed a pop-music format. After about a year of playing locally to friends and by exposing their sound through the internet, they began to gather professional attention from the outside world... They were approached by management and started to gather kudos from rather established music acts such as The Drums, who spoke about their band online. It was not long before things really took off for them and for a period of three years they played live shows throughout the UK and in Europe. Their songs received international airplay
It’s very exciting for Declan to be starting something new, with a greater understanding and experience of how he would like to transform his band into something great. His debut EP was released on 20 August, with a music video shot in locations in and around Wendover! It was inspired by 1980s New Wave, Modern Pop and Rock and Roll singers throughout the 1950s and 60s. “My idea was to try and get music back to basics, by just writing great pop songs with an air of nostalgia, albeit perhaps, with a futuristic twist.” The EP is available on itunes, and on Declan’s own personal bandcamp site - www. weareidol.bandcamp.com
It was through this success, and also through the band’s image that Declan was invited to go to Los Angeles and shoot with Hedi Slimane for Saint Laurent (YSL). It was a great experience and something that really opened his eyes to the world of fashion. Noise is clearly the in word at the moment, but it may take a while to convince the HS2 Select Committee that noise is a blight Wendover does not deserve. Let’s hope that the Select Committee will take note of noise issues when residents present their petitions in September and October. It is refreshing that the interest and comment about motorbike noise on the bypass has been noticed and acted upon by Thames Valley police. The following stats are noteworthy:Speed enforcement with Camera vans and PC Hare, have visited the location 8 times with a total of 341 speed offences detected. An average of nearly 43 offences per visit! Additionally, other motorists were pulled up for - 4 mobile phone offences; 2 seat belt offences; 4 section 59 warnings (anti social use of a motor vehicle, on a second occurrence the vehicle will be seized); 6 vehicle seizures - 3 motorcycles & 3 cars - and 1 arrest for careless riding no D/L or insurance and possession of cannabis. The Police will continue to carryout Hi Vis patrols and enforcement on the bypass. So the noise should reduce even though it might mean the bikers go elsewhere to get their kicks speeding at 130mph. The suggestions from BCC are that the bay is marked out as a Bus Stop Clearway and extended down Aylesbury Road so the bus can pull up close to the kerb. Guidelines require this so passengers can easily step between the kerb and the bus platform. For many passengers serious difficulty arises if they have to enter or leave the bus at carriageway level. At the moment the stop is only marked with double yellow lines, which permit people to stop and make deliveries which they cannot do on a clearway. The plans will potentially reduce the space to park on the road behind the bus stop by one space. BCC has asked WPC if it can cover the costs of the work and once all this is resolved the PC will replace the bus shelter.
The Parish Council received a number of complaints from residents about McCoy’s new signage and agreed that it was not in keeping with the look of the High Street. We were also concerned that no planning application had been made for the signs which would not come under the rules of “permitted development”. This was confirmed and AVDC has refused a retrospective application and will now work with McCoy’s to ensure the signage is replaced with something more appropriate.
