Hearts & Squares ONE DAY This workshop takes a look at how to create surface texture onto Evolon by using a soldering iron and adding colour and texture with organzas and other materials to build a sumptuous, textural surface. Medieval Impressions ONE DAY Lutradur is a spunbonded polyester fabric when heated with a heat gun will dissolve rather than melt into the most beautiful cobweb effect, and when used in conjunction with a wet medium such as acrylic paint or three dimension medium as a mask, the Lutradur will dissolve around the medium, but not into the medium. Project: Book This workshop will look at medieval design for its inspiration and distressing techniques to make the book wrap illustrated. Final construction of the wrap does not form part of this workshop, but I would recommend bringing eg an A5 ring binder to use a guide. This list is an indication ONLY of the type of supplies & equipment to be used in this workshop; Domestic Iron Dyes – Disperse (transfer) , 3D medium, waxes 8” hoop Class Pack containing a piece of 70g Lutradur and the use of Transfer Dyes will be supplied to each student at a cost of £5.00....(tbc at the time of booking). Gustav Klimt reworked in stitch & textiles. ONE (OR MORE) DAYS Following the major touring exhibition of Gustav Klimt's work, he continues to provide endless scope for the imagination and to rework those ideas in stitch and print. This workshop will examine some of these pieces and develop a resource of techniques using velvet as base fabric, metallic stitch (both hand and machine) and simple printing techniques in conjunction with metallic printing inks. There is no 'end product' around which this workshop s based, but students may jump off at any point to develop an idea. The techniques explored in this workshop will be the starting point for creating a resource of worked samples for future use. This list is an indication ONLY of the type of supplies & equipment to be used in this workshop; Sewing Machine (suitable for free machine embroidery) Plain dyed velvets both dark and light, metallic machine and hand embroidery threads Class Pack will only consist of small payment to cover the cost of the use of printing inks and other colouring materials as well as use of printing blocks and stencils etc at a cost of £5 (max) per head. Saxon Hoards - reworked in stitch & textiles. ONE (OR MORE) DAYS The newly discovered Staffordshire Hoard provides endless scope for the imagination and to rework those ideas in stitch and print. NB This workshop will be fast paced in order to cover different techniques although students may jump off at any point to pursue their own ideas. This workshop can be taken by anyone, but students must be well practiced in performing basic stitching on a sewing machine and be patient with using sewing machines for free motion machining. There will no machine technician available so this session will need to act as a peer group if any machine specific issues arise. Inkjet Printing onto Fabric ONE DAY This workshop will look at using desktop inkjet printers to create and/or simulate traditional printing techniques without the need for any other specialist equipment. Please note that the images illustrated here are indicative of the single colour prints that can be achieved. An explanation of ink types and other printers may be relevant to your group although we will only be using commonplace desktop printers and ink. The images used in the class will be provided by me in order to take out too many variables that can arise when students attempt to use their own images. At the risk of appearing to be a control freak, the reason for adopting this approach will become obvious. Above all this process is to be regarded as a fine art print process applied to fabric as base for a stitched piece of work, NOT a washable fabric/garment process This workshop DOES NOT explore the use of full colour images (photographs) for printing onto fabric. **In order to meet the expectations of students, there will be a non-negotiable surcharge of approx £5 per head for ink and other consumables. Experience has shown me that this is the only way to deliver effective instruction balanced with the expectation of students ie – smooth running and avoiding unexpected issues during the workshop.
