Meaning 'dust' or 'dusty place' in the Maasai language, Lake Nakuru, in Kenya, is famous for the thousands, sometimes millions, of flamingos that line the shore and form Earth's greatest bird spectacle. At the water's edge, baby rhinos wallow with their mothers and herds of zebra graze as lions watch from afar; this glorious location is one you'll never forget. Situated in the Great Rift Valley - visible from the moon - Nakuru also boasts beautiful grasslands, an abundance of acacia trees and rocky outcrops just waiting to be explored. You might even spot a hippo or two. GET THERE: Let Wendy whisk you to the park's airstrip via a connecting flight from the international airport in Nairobi. You'll be taken to a series of picture-postcard villages off the coast of Norway where you will - with a bit of luck - stand back in awe as nature's own theatre is played out above you in vivid colour. In recent years there have been unusually high levels of solar activity, which creates the perfect conditions for a clear display of the Aurora Borealis, so now is a perfect time to visit. tHe world In Colour Cinque Terre is one of the most beautiful portions of coast on the Italian Riviera. From here you can discover some of the most dramatic coastline in the world while visiting quaint fishing villages literally carved out of the mountain sides. Rich in tiny peninsulas and little-discovered bays, this protected area is full of opportunities for spectacular deep-sea diving and excursions along ancient pathways. Byron and Shelley composed famous poems here, and you can almost still feel the spirits of a holidaying Ava Gardner and Cary Grant. The luxury only continues with fresh seafood and trees weighed down with olives and grapes ripe for the eating. rio de janeiro brazil You'll be humming the melody of A Girl From Ipanema when you stay at La Suite, a super-stylish boutique hotel, located on a cliff in the exclusive neighbourhood of Joatinga, near - yes, you guessed it - Ipanema. The views are breathtaking. DON’T MISS: Trade the British winter for a Brazilian summer in the form of Rio Carnival. And you can put any thoughts of pancakes to the back of your mind, because the day before Ash Wednesday in this part of the world is all about dressing up and dancing to Samba beats in the streets. The party isn't restricted to just one day, however: there are parades and events for many weeks in February and March leading up to the big day.

h o n s h u, j a pa n With the unmistakably refined charm of old Japan and none of the neon-tinged technology found a bullet-train ride away in Tokyo, a trip to Kyoto is an olde-world experience like no other. But to truly see the delightful sights of Kyoto, you have to spend a few days touring the area. Start at Kinkakuji Temple (pictured above) and continue to the unfathomable dry rock garden of Ryoanji before hitting up Japan’s only remaining geisha district in Gion and sampling the region's movie industry at Toei Kyoto Studio Park. The trip takes 11 days. DON'T MISS: Kinkakuji Temple is known as the Golden Pavilion because its top two floors are completely covered in gold leaf. It dates back to the 14th century.
monaco Cô t e d ’A z u r , f r a n c e The South of France oozes class and Monaco has a luxury allure like nowhere else. Cafe de Paris is the place to be seen, but you’ll feel like royalty - a la Grace Kelly - anywhere here. DON'T MISS: The time to visit Monaco is May, when the hairpin streets of the principality are turned into the world’s most famous racetrack for a series of high-octane events, culminating in the Formula One Grand Prix.
Éméi Shān Sichuan province, china Get away from the bustle and in touch with your spiritual side in the cool mist of China's sacred Buddhist mountains. Up here you'll be away from the searing Sichuan heat but near all the tourist sights, including the ancient temples and beautiful forests. Base yourself in the solitude of a wellappointed monastery hotel - a perfect place to unwind after a long day of sightseeing.
DON'T MISS: The Giant Buddha (pictured above) is carved into the huge face of Mount Lingyun, and it's one of the many must-see sights in the area. Getting face to face with the 71-metre Maitreya, a plump Bodhisattva who represents brightness and happiness, will leave you wondering how such an amazing edifice was built all those years ago, in 803 AD. It took the Tang Dynasty 90 years to complete and the world's biggest stone Buddha, which is why it’s a UNESCO World Heritage site. Maitreya is best viewed from a boat around the point where the three rivers meet by his feet.
