Screenwriting Crafting stories for visual media is, first and foremost, crafting stories. To that end, students will define story genres, detail story structures, practice pacing metrics, and develop characters appropriate to story needs. But media storytellers do not have the luxury of descriptive paragraphs. They have characters who do and who speak. To this end, students will develop characters who speak their stories with distinct and individual voices. Yet, stories must be read. They must survive a “table read.” What sounds right? What sounds true? And what makes for a good listener? Students will practice listening and speaking with generous intent. Finally, creating visual media is also a business. That business places expectations on its storytellers. Further, businesses tend to develop their own forms of communication. Thus, students will also explore story “treatments,” story “pitches,” story “spec” scripts and story “boarding.” FACULTY DATES TIME WHERE FEE
