TRANSFORMATION FROM MAN TO WALRUS
How to make ‘em say
"I AM THE WALRUS" using only paper
chiwennie@gmail.com | Wennie Chi
01
WHAT IS A WALRUS CREATING A CARICATURE
Shape Round
Whiskers
Fat
Big
Large Volume Tusks
Sketching played an impor tant role in my design process. Being able to abstract the idea of a walrus on paper, helped create a better understanding of the animal’s form.

02
FROM 2D TO 3D UNDERSTANDING THE FORM
I worked a lot with the material, testing out different design ideas and creating prototypes.

FUN, YET ELEGENT CREATING FAMILY OF FORM
Using wire to create a fun, yet elegant chess set

05
WIRE BENDING HANDS-ON APPROACH
Sketching wire can be difficult so I worked mostly hands-on with the material NEW TOOLS AND NEW SKILLS I learned how to use the wood-lathe to make my own custom-sized mandrels (a jeweler tool) to achieve the appropriately sized coils I wanted for each piece. I also used different types of pliers (flat and needle-nose) and wire cutters.

06
WIRE BENDING SYMBOLISM IN DIMENSIONS Ideating different ways to communicate each piece in all three dimensions I wanted to utilize the ability of wire to manipulate form two-dimensionally (graphical representation), as well as three-dimensionally (form heirarchy).
chiwennie@gmail.com | Wennie Chi
07
A MATCHING SET SYMBOLISM IN DIMENSIONS The chess set consists of 18 gauge copper wire pieces and 18 gauge steel wire pieces. Staying true to the material, the pieces are made with coils. The coils provide volume and dimensionality, as well as fun, interactive springy action.

MEDICAL INNOVATION FINDING AN OPPORTUNITY TO HELP Increasing awareness of unhealthy diets
People with diabetes are at a higher risk for cardiovascular problems. (Diabetics are 2-4 times as likely as non-diabetics to suffer from heart disease or stroke. Cardiovascular issues are the leading cause of death among diabetics, responsible for 65% of deaths.)
Supervisor: Mary Beth Privetera Team members: Wennie Chi, designer Derek Eller, engineer Abby Wilms, engineer
High triglyceride levels indicate an increased risk for heart problems, both immediate and long term. If a person consumes a high fat meal and then tests their blood directly afterwards, they may have high triglyceride levels, but wouldn’t necessarily see a large increase in blood glucose. Through triglyceride monitoring, a person has the ability to witness the impact their diet has on their cardiovascular health.

HOW CAN WE HELP? RECOGNIZING THE ISSUE
Currently, the majority of diabetics control their diabetes through monitoring their blood glucose levels. Because most diabetics already monitor glucose levels, a device which can test glucose and triglyceride levels at the same time could provide valuable information, with very little additional effort to the user.
Goal: Combine the two operations into one task

UNDERSTANDING THE TECH GLUCOSE METER VS. TRIGLYCERIDE METER HOW A GLUCOSE METER DIFFERS FROM A TRIGLYCERIDE METER A glucometer relies on an electrochemical reaction. The glucose in the blood sample reacts with an enzyme electrode called glucose oxidase. This reaction produces an electrical current that determines the amount of glucose in the blood.
The technology used in a triglyceride meter is a spectrometer. This means it uses light to test the the blood; therefore, the device needs to be able to seal the test strip in a light-proof compar tment for an accurate reading.
HOW THIS AFFECTS THE DESIGN In order to incorporate a triglyceride meter into a glucose meter, we must take into account the new technology. This means redesigning the test strip to include both t ypes of readings and redesigning the device to include a lightproof compar tment for the spectrometer to do a proper analysis of triglyceride levels.
