Inmate Compassion - Prison communication and its importance

Page 1

Prison communication and its importance Communication is the basis of our lives and without it, we would simply be handicapped. Every day we communicate with each other in some way or another, be it by using words, actions, or even expressions to convey our message. While we understand the importance of communication, prison communication is a completely different topic. Prison communication is not the same as your everyday normal communication with friends and family on the outside. When we converse on a day-to-day basis, we just need to drop a message or pick up the phone and give a call. Which is not the case here, while we are able to communicate with the help of letters, the personalisation factor is gone. When communicating with those we love, personalisation is a must, without which the message feels incomplete. This becomes even more important when it comes to prison communication because here we are talking to those who have been incarcerated for a long period of time. They are all alone, by themselves, often without any contact with the outside world. Often, this causes depression and other health-related problems. Therefore, we have an app like Inmate Compassion, which allows us to communicate in a more personalised manner. Why is it important for us to communicate with our loved ones who are incarcerated in prison? This is simply because of the following reason: 

The maintenance of the family unit



Enhancement of the well-being of individual family members



Facilitation of the prisoner's post-release success

Communication allows us to keep the connection and love alive which is often lost due to prison sentences. Constant communication with our family allows for a more positive outlook towards the future and helps in overall attitude development. Many researchers have found that one of the leading causes for offenders repeating a crime is a communication breakdown. The fact that they are cut off from the outside world, from networks and meaningful relationships can often trigger negativity, which can be improved by regular communication. A simple birthday wish regular sharing of messages, can ensure positive behaviour which can continue post-release. A parent, spouse, sibling, other family member or good friend needs to offer consistent communication to the inmate throughout their sentence. The role of the prison staff is also very important here. They should also strive for consistent communication with inmates. However, their style of communication is different than the support offered by families. Prison staff have the responsibility to uphold an impartial, professional, and uncompromising relationship with the incarcerated individuals. While staff should want to see an inmate succeed in re-entry and likely have some great advice to share with the inmate along the way, their relationship with any single inmate should be unbiased. For friends and family who have incarcerated loved ones, a simple telephone call, handwritten letter, voicemail, or in-person visit can go a long way on impacting that individual’s life. And this is possible through Inmate Compassion. From sending postcards, picture letters, personalized picture cards, and much more, Inmate Compassion ensures onstant love and support for those incarcerated. The pressures of prison can be extremely difficult, especially in the beginning. While family members friends cannot forced to maintain consistent communication with an inmate, the opportunity is always there, especially through apps such as Inmate Compassion.
