About
M e .
“I have grown up rising at the crack of dawn, from a very early age, throwing on my muddy boots to get prepared for a long hard day of work. Growing up as the owner’s son of a landscape construction company meant rough hands and a sense of pride from the hard work that I performed each day. I had to be presentable to customers, an efficient leader, problem solver, and decision maker, as well as, earn and retain the respect of the employees. This experience developed me into the person I am today. Learning every aspect of this industry from a hands on experience has proven invaluable to my understanding and passion as a designer. During those long summer days as a young man, I had no idea where those 50-65 hour work weeks were going to take me, but it has all come together perfectly. During my undergraduate experience at Washington College, in Chestertown, Maryland, I found myself drawn to the outdoors and gained a respect for the natural world. Temple University’s Master of Landscape Architecture program with its concentration in ecological restoration is where I chose to further my education. At Temple University, I learned to create aesthetically pleasing designs that also have ecological benefits to the environment. As a potential candidate for a position at your firm, I feel like I stand out from other prospective employees because of my ability to work across disciplines, whether it is landscape architecture, ecological restoration, design/ build or landscape construction, I am be a great asset to any firm.” Wesley C. A private school, in the suburbs of Philadlephia asked for assistance in renovating a non-programmed space on campus. Formerly this space was used as perennial garden that had been neglected and became a maintenance nightmare. After analyzing the site location, context on campus, prior usage, and the school’s need for a natural area, I realized a learning playground was the solution to this problem. This specific learning garden uses a variety of natural materials to interest the children. Numerous materials such as certified playgorund mulch, crushed stone screanings, boulders, belgium block and irregular flagstone create contrasting and interesting surfaces. Focal points of this design are the raised planting beds, log seating and pergola, which collectively can also be used as an outdoor classroom.

This particular area, prior to construction, had limited circulation options due to the turf and hedgerow had existed. The turf was heavily compacted due to the large amount of foot traffic from students waiting for buses and cuting through the hedge row. Pedestrian circulation was only directed from Willow Grove Ave, at the crosswalk to the doors at Woodward/ Kingsley Gymnasium. As a designer, I realized that there were two issues in this particular space, which included circulation and the students were in need of a seating area to congretate after class and also to wait for the buses. The solution to these problems was to open up the existing lawn and redirect circulation to the East of Woodward (7) Gymnasium to the other classroom buildings. In this newly constructed space, I designed seat walls, constructed of Wissahickon Schist stone and Bluestone coping for a space for students to gather. Build Date Client Location Cost

A newly developed apartment community was looking to improve ammentities offered to tennents and also build a space that would attract more tennants to lease one of their apartments. A bocce court existed prior to this design, but acces and site location made it an unwelcoming space. This design includes a patio built into the existing slope, adjacent to the bocce court. A fire burner feature is built into the retaining wall that surrounds the patio. The 54” fire pit burner is designed to be built at 24” above the patio and complimented with flame finished bluestone coping. Separating the two spaces is a seat wall allowing users to sit and watch bocce games. Aside from the fire burner, 400’ of string lights (Edison Bulbs LED) hang over the bocce court, creating a spectacular ambiance. String lights are mounted to the existing structure, and four heavy duty poles on the adjacent side.

A. This is a conceptual design of a private school’s Alumni House located in Philadelphia. The client requested a street buffer planting, foundation planting, brick patio for outdoor events and a designated area for a tent. One of the donors requested a butterfly and pollinator garden, so I designed a pollinator walk around the lawn and event area. The pollinator walk includes topographical features and a meandering dry lay stone wall. In the woodlands an outdoor classroom was created, along 1. with understory plantings to replace invasive shrubs and vines.

B. The Herbst Park site redesign was necessitated by the lack of parking spaces during large sports events and need for pavillions. The clients wanted to rearrange the fields to maximumize the amount of fields on the property. In this design, I created more than 150 additional parking spaces and a better and safer flow compared to the existing vehicular circulation. Two pavillions were also addded at the central hub of the property as a way to shelter users from the sun during long sporting event days

C. This conceptual design and lighting layout plan is for a headmasters house on the grounds of a private school. The clients wanted a outdoor patio space for fundraising events, a front planting buffer, a foundation planting, and a porous parking lot made of a geosynthetic material called Typar Grassprotecta. A detailed patio plan was designed with stone screenings, natural cleft bluestone inlays and a clay brick soldier course. Seatwalls and piers will be constructed with natural stone and a flame finished bluestone coping to compliment the architecture of the existing house on this site.

Over-development is a rising problem in the greater Philadelphia region, destroying the natural beauty of the land and habitats in order to create capital gain. The Miquon Springs property is under constant pressure of development due to its location and characteristically undeveloped nature. The land owner has decided to conserve the property, and establish a profitable business, while restoring ecosystems and sustainably redesigning aspects of the land in order to accommodate his business plan. The owner, Dr. Stephen Slewek, has expressed interest in transforming the property into a Bed and Breakfast with a rustic wedding event space. Also, he is planning on building his private residence on the North corner of the property. The design for this project aims to create a beautiful, educational, and peaceful environment by honoring the site’s historic architecture and restoring its degraded ecosystems. Site Context
Miquon Springs Bed and Breakfast is a 25-acre site located in Conshohocken, PA. It is located adjacent to the Schuylkill River in a very affluent area, within the Greater Philadelphia Region. The site is in a ten mile radius of Downtown Philadelphia, Radnor, and King of Prussia, therefore providing a convenient and unique experience for visitors. This site also has a significant historical value, being that in 1778, Marquis de Lafayette held position against the British Troops in the Battle of Barren Hill. Historical references state that Marquis de Lafayette’s first position was located on or close to this property.

Temple University is a rapidly growing university located in a densely populated urban area. This urban university currently lacks a unified campus green space. The goal for this design is to create a highly sustainable green space that will help unify the campus. Temple plans to build a state of the art library adjacent to this green space and take into account future circulation of the campus. The objectives are to improve pedestrian connectivity, create open space, improve campus identity and enhance user experience.

“Design with Flow”
Notable Landscape Architect, Darrel Morrison, RLA, introduced our class into the conceptual stage of this design supplying each student with a large piece of cardboard paper and pastels. He proceeded to turn on classical music, specifically “The Moldau” by Smetana, and encouraged us to design with the movement of the music. This allows for an enhanced flow by using the designers intuition and feeling derived from the music.

This project was designed to address issues facing our public and civic spaces in the urban environment. PARK(ing) Day is to call attention to the need for more urban open space and to re-purpose urban spaces in order to improve the quality of urban human living. As students we brought an idea into reality, creating a “pop-up park” for the town of Doylestown, PA. The goal was to engage the town and create a temporary green space in order to raise awareness for more pedestrian-friendly spaces. Our Master’s Program began a collaboration with Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve (BHWP) in the fall of 2014, with the goal of producing a master plan for the site. BHWP’s objectives included creating a design that would attract more visitors and enhance the visitor experience at the preserve. This design project was unique because it not only needed to meet the needs of BHWP, but needed to showcase the remarkable ecological value present at the preserve and also the historical context of the site. This project included extensive field assessments, numerous meetings and interactions with BHWP members and staff, and design work, in order to fully develop a design that fit their vision.

The Borit Asbestos Superfund Site was used from the early 1900s to the late 1960s to dispose of asbestos-containing materials. The asbestos came from the factory located adjacent to the site, formerly The Keasby & Mattison Company. The town of Ambler, PA flourished with the rise of the factory in the industrial revolution and encouraged 1. many immigrants to start a new life in town, including my ancestors. The site contains an asbestos waste pile, reservoir and closed park area, which is located on the banks of the Wissahickon Creek. The EPA covered the asbestos with two feet of fill and a geotextiles fabric, which forbids any cutting into the existing grade, including “the pile”. The objectives of this project were to create a community friendly park that also included ecological values, such as a wetland area for bird habitat and an increased floodplain for the Wissahickon Creek. My late grandfather worked his entire life in this factory, which created a deeper connection to this project. January 2015- May 2015 Client Borough of Ambler REDEVELOP. The borough of Ambler, PA experiences substantial flooding during large storm events and is looking to implement green storm-water infrastructure that could reduce the amount of runoff from the community to the Wissahickon Creek. This project was a short exercise in which we had to apply best management practices (BMPs) to reduce the effect of stormwater runoff for our location of our choosing. This particular location exhibits unstable banks to the north and experiences high energy water flow during large storms and is then channeled through concrete pipes to the Wissahickon. The concrete channel of the creek causes many of the flooding issues because it provides no infiltration and is not able to hold a large volume of water. The goal is to stabilize banks, increase infiltration, decrease water energy, and to increase the floodplain of the specific area. This specific daylighting feature of the site was previously an area where the water was channeled through concrete pipes to the Wissahickon Creek. The concrete pipes were not infiltrating any of the water, therefore, I decided to daylight this stream, in order to infiltrate, reduce flooding, expand floodplain, and provide ecological and aesthetic value.

This Cecil B. Moore Subway Plaza was the first project that we conducted as graduate students, starting from the site analysis, master plan and through the detail site plan. The purpose of this project was to create an open space, in an outdated area, that would engage the community and university. The vision was to manipulate circulation in conjunction with program elements in order to unify the space and create a welcoming entrance to the university.

Observations
Temple University is an urban campus located in North Philadelphia. The campus seems to lack an image or spatial sequence because of the layout of the university. The lack of traditional form is quite unique, which may be a reason why there is no unity amongst the campus. There is a strong central core of the campus, but the boundaries of the campus are questionable. Land use data was recorded from Temple University campus maps and conducted by foot, through visually inspecting every structure.
Work
Site Analysis
Conclusion
There is a lack of physical unity to Temple University’s main campus, due to the sporadic layout of the campus. Temple has made great progress in obtaining land, but needs to create more spaces for students to gather and enhance the circulation throughout campus. There is a significant need for a major quad or green spaces.
