CommScope’s Powered Fiber Cable Systems The University of Tennessee finds a powerful network partner in CommScope Founded in 1794, the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, is older than its state. The university has since grown to nearly 30,000 students and houses the country’s fifth-largest stadium with seats for 102,455 screaming fans. Despite the academic institution’s rich historical roots, the university is connected for the modern age. UT has indoor and outdoor Wi-Fi access points, operates three data centers, and maintains 220 miles of singlemode fiber optic cable and hundreds of security cameras across its 580 acres. With such a complex infrastructure, UT constantly looks for ways to update its networking power to provide staff and students the fastest and most secure wireless experience possible. As a part of a $1.2 billion renovation

A Trial Run Proves the Case

The university’s IT department chose to test the CommScope Powered Fiber Cable System before committing to a full partnership that would keep the university’s staff and students constantly connected. “We completed a joint trial of the Powered Fiber Cable System with CommScope to validate its ability to deliver data and power of Ethernet across long distances,” says Ben Rayfield, IT Technical Specialist IV at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. The Powered Fiber Cable System consists of hybrid copper/fiber cable and power over Ethernet (PoE) extenders. The CommScope system also comes with cable/fiber management, power transmission management, safety and overload protection and a universal power supply. The entire

All You’ll See is the Surrounding Beauty

The trial run demonstrated faster, more reliable Wi-Fi access with strong security benefits and competitive pricing, but CommScope still had one more hurdle to clear. The university’s beautification committee had to sign off on the project. CommScope was able to show how its PoE extenders could be mounted on discrete brackets or neatly tucked away inside lampposts. Connecting cables could run inside the post to the Wi-Fi access points and security cameras. After seeing how the Powered Fiber Cable System could blend into its surroundings and leave an uninterrupted view of the university’s pristine campus, the committee gave its stamp of approval. The Powered Fiber Cable System enables the University to: • Improve productivity. CommScope combines power and communications into one sheath for improved camera and wireless device placement

The Powered Fiber Cable System delivers faster, more reliable outdoor Wi-Fi access and increased security with a quicker, less-costly deployment — all without an obvious footprint. system is built to withstand the elements of an outdoor setting.

and expansion project in pursuit of that goal, UT turned to CommScope to deploy more outdoor wireless access points and security cameras throughout its campus. Deploying an outdoor wireless network with secure, seamless performance across a large university campus presents a unique set of challenges: • Gaining access to the necessary electrical power for an effective network can be difficult and expensive. • Safety is an issue when this much power is in play. • A jumble of cables and visible “big boxes” for wireless access would mar visual aesthetics, particularly at a campus as beautiful as UT.

During the trial, the PoE extender was placed at a campus location with an Aruba AP-275 outdoor wireless access point and Avigilon PTZ camera. The copper and fiber were connected at this same spot. Once the Cat6 cable was connected to the Aruba Wi-Fi unit, the university’s IT staff verified successful Wi-Fi access via laptop computers. The Avigilon camera also passed its performance test. UT security system experts were pleased with the camera’s response speed over the onekilometer cable length.

and maximum coverage.

• Realize cost savings. Instead of deploying expensive electrical power, CommScope uses SELV and NEC Class 2 cables — cutting conduit cost in half and eliminating any need for electricians. Additionally, CommScope gets rid of remote PoE switch installation costs; the Powered Fiber Cable System is able to deliver PoE over distances 30-times longer than traditional PoE systems. • Achieve optimal safety. The Powered Fiber Cable System has three stages of electrical protection, as well as low voltage electrical codes designed specifically for human safety. • Maintain outdoor aesthetics. The centralized architecture can be hidden easily in outdoor lampposts and street work.

Classic Cars and Modern Savings First established in 1988, the Blackhawk Automotive Museum in Danville, Calif., showcases classic cars in two main galleries throughout its 70,000-square-foot architectural “jewel box” setting. Comprised of polished black granite floors and dark walls and ceilings all around, the museum’s artful façade was specially designed to highlight the priceless automobiles in much the same way as a diamond is beautifully displayed in a case, noted Blackhawk’s Executive Director Timothy McGrane. “It was important that the lighting we chose highlighted the aesthetics and rare beauty of the cars,” McGrane says. “The variety of paint colors, along with the diverse mixture of upholstery fabrics and chrome details all needed to be correctly color-illuminated among the exhibits.”

Making the Switch

In a space where it is crucial that the environment and lighting must complement one another, the museum sought an energy-efficient lighting solution that showcased the vivid colors and details of its automobile exhibits in their pristine forms — while helping to slash its lighting energy consumption. Additionally, Blackhawk had a dignified reputation to uphold, being renowned as one of the leading classic car museums in the world for the significance and exclusivity of the auto gems it holds. “Making the transition to LED was not taken lightly,” McGrane says. “Just because a lamp fits the socket doesn’t mean it’s right for the application—our classic cars called for a custom LED solution that would deliver both the aesthetics and energy savings we desired.” GE’s 18-watt PAR38 LED lamps were installed throughout the upper and lower levels of the museum as a one-to-one replacement for its previous 90-watt halogen lamps. Meanwhile, 20-watt GE PAR38 LED lamps, PAR20 LED lamps and MR16 LED lamps were used in areas of the museum where dimming was required. The new LED lighting system uses about 51,511 total watts versus the 224,614 total watts used with the previous halogen lamp layout, while also offering greater aesthetics and control over light distribution throughout the facility with nearly the same light output.

WESCO CONNECT REWARDS

Ideal for indoor and outdoor applications in retail, commercial, hospitality spaces and more, GE’s LED replacement lamps provide energy efficiency, long life and high color rendering in a variety of beam patterns. With more than 970 halogen lamps replaced, Blackhawk anticipates energy savings of nearly 77 percent in lighting energy usage and a reduced electricity bill of more than $25,965 each year (based on 2,461 hours of annual operation for lighting on the lower museum floor and 3,316 hours on the upper museum floor; and an electricity rate of 0.15/ kWh), while bringing a new polish to its stunning selection of classic automobiles and memorabilia.

Highlighting History

“The cars just ‘POP’ now with the new LED lighting!” McGrane said. “The vibrancy of the different paint colors really stands out and visitors have commented on how great they look—they’re realizing incidentally that the new lighting is the cause.” With advanced optics that deliver excellent light uniformity and a low-glare design, GE’s patented Visual Comfort Lens™ also helped Blackhawk make a seamless transition from halogen to LED. “We wanted to avoid looking up and seeing little dots of diodes on the ceiling because that meant there would also be dots on the cars,” McGrane noted. “The Visual Comfort Lens helped soften the look of the gallery and really sealed the GE deal for us.” Additionally, the switch to LED lighting means greater longevity for the museum’s lighting system—and less maintenance time and costs compared to previous upkeep needs—due to a rated lifetime of 25,000 to 50,000 hours. “We couldn’t afford to replace our lamps as frequently as before,” McGrane said. “We wanted a solution we knew we could depend on, and GE brought that to us with the LED replacement lamps.”

Expediting Transformer Lead Times with Eaton’s Express Ship+ Program Expediting transformer lead times with Eaton’s Express Ship+ program Eaton’s Power Systems business has offered its three-phase transformer Express Ship program since 2015, providing customers with quick delivery on select Cooper Power series transformer models. Thanks to the ongoing success of the program, the business launched the expanded Express Ship+ in October 2017 offering the same benefits on additional product lines. Express Ship+ was recently expanded even further to include single-phase pole-mounted transformers, offering a competitive lead time of just six weeks. In many instances, Express Ship+ lead times are 4-10 weeks shorter than would otherwise be available. The Wesco branch located in Bakersfield, CA, can attest to value of the Express Ship+ program first-hand, as it recently helped them fulfill an urgent customer request for a three-phase padmount transformer. When the branch looped in Tim Callahan with T-Reps Agency in Southern California, Callahan knew to leverage the Express Ship+ program. “The beauty of the Express Ship+ program is having everything you need in one spreadsheet,” said Callahan. “I can quickly respond with a Bill of Material and even provide the actual factory drawing with a nameplate. Having that drawing is a big time saver for the contractor, and it gives the engineer added confidence when they see exactly what they’ll be receiving.” In this instance, Callahan submitted the quote to Wesco on September 22 and on October 10, the customer was ready to move forward. “After receiving the PO on the 10th, the transformer was shipped before the end of the month,” said Callahan. “Normal lead times on three-phase padmounted transformers are typically upwards of 16 weeks. There’s no way we would have been able to do this without the Express Ship+ program.” Whether it’s a natural disaster or an unexpected equipment failure, Eaton recognizes that there are times when three-phase pad-mounted distribution transformers are needed within a short timeframe.

Upgrading to Meet Production Demands Panduit ecosystem helps noosa* yoghurt speed production at maximum efficiency while increasing network reliability and productivity Business Challenges noosa yoghurt’s commitment to making a superior product propelled the company to invest in a $5 million plant upgrade that was completed in 2015. As the original plant increased production, a small, standalone industrial network grew organically while product demand surged. Because the network grew without standardized methods, it became cumbersome to troubleshoot, often resulting in costly unscheduled downtime. With both enterprise and plant floor network workstations in the same locations throughout the plant, the company also needed to assure a clear demarcation between enterprise and manufacturing zone network resources. This would allow these critical networks to coexist without adversely affecting one another in the case of a network event. To accommodate its expected growth, decrease downtime, and promote product standardization, noosa yoghurt needed a robust, future-ready solution.

Strategic Objectives The plant upgrade would maintain noosa yoghurt’s competitive advantage while solidifying it as a major contender in the food and beverage industry. It would also allow the company to increase its quality of service through improved network traffic and increased network uptime and availability. In addition, noosa yoghurt needed to establish a solid network infrastructure that uses standardsbased design elements to comply with current industry regulations and allow for expansion into additional markets.

Panduit Solution noosa yoghurt consulted with Panduit to design the complete physical layer of its new industrial network. The company deployed a network design that aligns with the Converged Plantwide Ethernet (CPwE) Cisco Validated Designs (CVDs) to reduce risk, time to deployment, and total cost of ownership. noosa yoghurt implemented a structured cabling approach using permanent links for copper end points out in the field, improving operational efficiency, productivity, and flexibility. The design team communicated best practices aligning with TIA standards and helped noosa yoghurt adopt the use of DIN rail mount patch boxes and single-port patching inside control panels. Redundant star and REP ring topologies are in various areas of the plant and redundant backbone pathways from one end of the plant to the other provide continuous availability between the server room and the network core located in the middle of the plant.

Along with network zone systems, the design incorporated NEMA 4X stainless steel sloped-top zone enclosures to prevent contamination. They are easy to clean and maintain, improving hygienic conditions. The sloping feature allows for quick washdowns and prevents water from collecting on the top of the enclosure. The backbone of the industrial network consists of Dielectric Conduited Fiber (DCF) OM4 multimode fiber to meet current environmental requirements and future performance needs. DCF fiber provides high-density connectivity and ease of installation within buildings and allows easy troubleshooting for noosa yoghurt’s network connections.

Business Benefits Panduit understood the importance of the logical and physical topologies to meet system requirements and identified future growth needs while suggesting suitable solutions. As a result, noosa yoghurt now has a reliable, end-to-end network physical layer infrastructure that enables communications between the control room and manufacturing floor, providing high availability, scalability, and reduced deployment time by up to 75%. The standardized pre-configured equipment provides consistency and quick deployment, with 25% faster implementation than a non-pre-configured solution. * All trademarks, service marks, trade names, and product names appearing in this document are the property of their respective owners.

The solution for noosa yoghurt’s new 32,000 square foot facility consists of the Pre-Configured Micro Data Center (MDC), Switch Ready Network Zone System, Pre-Configured Industrial Distribution Frame (IDF), control panel solutions, and fiber and copper connectivity.

Ty-Rap® Cable Ties Save a Frozen Day Quick-thinking driver uses cable ties to nurse his truck hundreds of miles home after serpentine belt breaks on remote highway. Peter Jakabek faced a sudden dilemma as he hauled equipment across the frozen Canadian prairie. It was 1:30 p.m. Dec. 17, 2017, when the serpentine belt snapped on his diesel truck. His daughter and a friend were aboard for the ride. The nearest town, Russell, Manitoba, was 25 miles down the highway. Jakabek, an excavation company owner from near Winnipeg, couldn’t leave his trailer and equipment sitting along the road 227 miles from home while he went for help. And he didn’t want his friend and daughter to wait in a freezing truck for help to arrive. Like the savvy mechanic he is, Jakabek did what you do when you need performance. He reached for Ty-Rap® cable ties from Thomas & Betts, a member of the ABB Group. Jakabek fashioned four cable tie loops to fit where the serpentine belt had been, between the crankshaft pulley and water pump. A generator on the truck’s flatbed kept the electrical system charged.

On the Road Again

The trio nudged their fully loaded rig back onto the highway, watching the heat gauge to make sure the makeshift Ty-Rap belt turned the water pump to cool the engine. After 10 minutes, they stopped to check. The ties had held. The engine was cool. They gradually accelerated to highway speed and continued toward home. Once in cell phone range, Jakabek alerted his wife to buy spare parts in Winnipeg

and head in their direction, still about three hours away. The generator failed to keep up with the electrical load, so they stopped 60 miles from home to shed lights, freeing power to keep the engine’s computers running. All but one of the Ty-Rap ties were still in service, so Jakabek replaced the broken one, and they continued at highway speed. Finally, with new parts in hand, Jakabek stopped to check the engine compartment. The Ty-Rap fix was still working. Figuring it would last a few more miles, he drove the rest of the way home before cutting the Ty-Rap loops and installing the new serpentine belt. The Ty-Rap cable ties were in the emergency road kit Jakabek took to handle any breakdowns they might encounter on their 1,490-mile round trip to Bonnyville, Alberta. Why pack Ty-Rap? Before he started his company in 2007, Jakabek was an aircraft maintenance engineer. “I learned the value of good materials,” he said. “There’s no point buying cheap cable ties. Soon as it gets cold, they break.”

The Experts Take a Look

Jakabek sent his makeshift Ty-Rap belt to Thomas & Betts, where engineer Joseph Ferris and senior project engineer Ben Freeman examined the ties. They were rated for 120 lbs., so Jakabek’s installation put little strain on them, the engineers concluded. The stipples on the bottom were hardly

How will you spend your reward points?

worn, indicating that the loops gripped tightly and did not slip. The connection points — most likely to fail as they whipped and flexed around the truck’s pulleys at high RPMs — seemed solidly connected and only slightly worn. “Based on what I see, he probably could have gotten double the miles if he had to,” Ferris noted. “But it’s absolutely not something we recommend,” Freeman said. “Carry an extra serpentine belt instead.” To which point the T&B legal department added, “While we congratulate Mr. Jakabek’s ingenuity and appreciate that sometimes necessity is the mother of invention, Ty-Rap cable ties are designed and sold for specific limited uses and are only warranted when used as intended by the manufacturer.”

When Performance Matters

T&B engineer Maurus C. Logan introduced Ty-Rap, the original cable tie, in 1958 for Boeing to bundle electrical cables in its aircraft fuselages. In the 60 years since, Ty-Rap has morphed into several specialty lines for various uses with its characteristic Grip of Steel® metal barb. Whether Ty-Rap has been tested exactly like this before is an open question, but Jakabek’s experience underscores a key point: When performance matters, you can count on Ty-Rap.
