The Castle in the Rockies...
The Vision
William Van Horne oversaw the construction of the first Canadian transcontinental railway, completed in 1885. Being a visionary, he realized the potential for Banff tourism during this time. In 1887, he personally chose the site for the Fairmont and commissioned its blueprints. Bruce Price led the architectural design team, and in 1888, the largest hotel in the world for its time — a Château-style castle — opened for business.
Evolution
In order to better serve public demand, architect Walter Painter designed the Fairmont’s iconic 11-story tower in 1911 with its additional 300 guest rooms. In 1926, after a devastating fire destroyed the hotel, engineer John W. Orrock rebuilt the hotel in its original grandiose splendor. It was forced to close from 1942 to 1945 due to a labor shortage caused by WWII. And, in the 1990s, manager Ted Kissane appropriately nicknamed the Fairmont the “Castle in the Rockies.” Today, the world-class resort offers 745 guest rooms and suites and was voted the “#1 Best Place to Visit in Canada” by U.S. News & World Report
You’re in Good Company
The Fairmont has been graced by the visitations of countless royalties and celebrities, including: King George VI and his wife Elizabeth-The Queen Mother in 1939, Canadian PM William Lyon Mackenzie King, Teddy Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, and Helen Keller to name a few. Marilyn Monroe visited Banff with Joe DiMaggio in 1953 while filming A River of No Return

“Since we can’t export the scenery, we’ll have to import the tourists.”

• Evening Wildlife Safari Bus Tour

• Whitewater Rafting Adventure
Evening Wildlife Safari Bus Tour
Don’t miss the chance to enjoy the captivating views of the Banff National Park at dusk and meet some of the most celebrated locals. According to Parks Canada, natural inhabitants include bighorn sheep, deer, elk, moose, mountain goats, weasels, red foxes, otters, pikas, and more than 311 species of birds, the largest being osprey and bald and golden eagles. Carnivores that are seen less frequently include coyotes, grizzly and black bears, mountain cougars, lynx, and four packs of wolves.
You could be in one of the lucky tour groups that catches a glimpse of Nakoda, the rare white grizzly bear residing in Banff. Her white fur is not due to albinism, but a recessive genetic trait. “Nakoda” means friend or ally in the language spoken by three indigenous tribes.
Horseback Riding along the Rivers
Prefer to be in the driver’s seat? Bond with a friendly, velvet-nosed horse and saddle up for a relaxing tour along the peaceful Bow or Spray rivers. Enjoy the alpine air and spectacular views from a new perspective and a slower pace. Basic riding instruction is provided, so there’s no need to be an expert equestrian.
Whitewater Rafting Adventure
Climb aboard and hang on for a fun adventure down the Kananaskis River. Novices will learn paddle techniques from an expert guide and everyone will enjoy spotting wildlife along the river banks and soaring eagles overhead. Be humbled as you navigate through the towering cathedral-like Rockies. What a great way to see this beautiful country!

World-Renowned, Award-Winning Golf
At the Fairmont Banff Springs, two challenging courses wind along the Bow River at the foot of the commanding Sulfur Mountain and towering Mount Rundle.
• Stanley Thompson Course
• Tunnel Mountain Course
Stanley Thompson Course, built in 1928, 18 holes, 150 bunkers, par 71
The master golf course architect, Stanley Thompson, designed this course so each hole would offer a breathtaking view in every direction. Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, Clint Eastwood, Joe DiMaggio, Bobby Locke, and many other well-knowns have played this course. Here’s your opportunity!
The fairway of the world-famous, par 3, fourth hole — the Devil’s Cauldron — requires golfers to hit their shot over an azure lake onto a bowl-shaped green surrounded by six bunkers. It might require a deal with the devil to make this par 3.
With too many awards to list, here are three of the most recent:
• #7 on SCOREGolf’s Top 100 Golf Courses in Canada - 2022
• #11 on GolfDigest’s Best Courses in Canada - 2022

Tunnel Mountain, built in 1989, 9 holes, par 36
Designed by Goeffrey Cornish and Bill and John F. Robinson, this additional nine-hole course is a perfect complement to the original Stanley Thompson 18.
