Best Snorkeling in Puerto Rico
Swim among colorful fish, sea turtles, and spotted rays at the charming nearby island of Culebra, located just 17 miles off the mainland coast! Culebra is quaint, having a more relaxed vibe than the mainland and a population of only 1,792. “Isla Chiquita” or Little Island measures only 5 x 7 miles and is accessible by plane or ferry. The island’s nearby cays and about a quarter of Culebra itself was proclaimed a wildlife preserve in 1909 by then-President Theodore Roosevelt. Its many beaches all have something special to offer. Here are just a few:
• Melones Beach — Colorful fish and swaying coral fans
• Flamenco Beach — Famously amazing aqua waters and soft white sands. It’s also known for the abandoned U.S. WWII tanks that are colorfully painted and make for interesting photos.
• Tamarindo Beach — Colorful fish, rays, and turtles

Stretch out your arms and soar eagle-style, up to 95 miles per hour along the 7 Monster zipline (7,234 feet long, 1,200 feet high). Or, if you prefer to be seated upright, you can sail up to 60 miles per hour on the Beast zipline (4,745 feet long, 853 feet high)!
Old San Juan
This 500-year-old town and UNESCO site is the second oldest city in the western hemisphere. Paved with beautiful grayishblue cobblestones, the stones were used as ballast on Spanish ships then discarded and replaced with gold for the journey home. Iron slag was used to produce the stones and that’s what gives them their stunning grayish-blue color. These unique streets are lined with cheerfully-colored buildings that house shops, galleries, and eateries awaiting discovery. This is the place to find authentic island garb, jewelry, and crafts.

Impressive Puerto Rico

The Deepest Part of the Atlantic Ocean
The Tallest Statue in the Western Hemisphere
Its Own Pirate of the Caribbean
A World-Famous Cocktail
The Deepest Part of the Atlantic Ocean
The Puerto Rico Trench, formed by the meeting of the Atlantic and the Caribbean tectonic plates, is 497 miles long and 5.30 miles deep. The seafloor was first reached by France’s diving vessel Archimède in 1964. Victor Vescovo — a retired naval Commander, private investor, and one of the world’s great award-winning explorers — was the first human to reach the bottom of the trench in December 2018. Humpback whales and spotted dolphins are seen along the trench. Amphipods, isopods, sea cucumbers, dragonfish, hagfish, vampire squid, and eels live in its depths.
The Tallest Statue in the Western Hemisphere
The Birth of the New World is a bronze statue designed by Zurab Tsereteli to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s first voyage. Columbus is the helm — left hand on the ship wheel, right hand raised with his palm open wide. Standing 360 feet tall, it is 199 feet taller than the Statue of Liberty! Its immense size earned it the nickname “Chris Kong” while Tsereteli sought a base for it. Today, Birth of the New World stands proudly at its forever home in Arecibo.
Its Own Pirate of the Caribbean
Roberto Cofresí — better known as El Pirata Cofresi — was born in Cabo Rojo to a prominent, but poor, family. After working as a sailor when young, Cofresí turned to crime. He would gather small crews and attack ships that did not fly the Royal Spanish flag. Sharing his new wealth with the locals gained him the protection of the common folk. Eventually, he and his fellow sailors were captured and executed by a firing squad. It is rumored that some of his treasure is still hidden in the caves of Sabana Seca!
A World-Famous Cocktail
While Puerto Rico may not be known for its coconut groves, it is well-known for its piña coladas and the controversy over the drink’s true creator.
• 1964 — Ramón “Monchito” Marrero of Caribe Hilton. Invented it as a commissioned signature cocktail. Sources say Joan Crawford declared that it “was better than slapping Bette Davis in the face.”
• Also 1964 — Ricardo García, also of Caribe Hilton. Created it when improvising due to a coconut shortage.
• 1963 — Ramón Portas Mignot of Barrachina Restaurant. The entrance displays a plaque celebrating Barrachina as the drink’s birthplace.
• 1800s — Roberto Confresí. Islanders say he served this cocktail to his crews to boost morale, but his recipe was lost when he was executed.
