Break through the surface and enter another world where blue skies are replaced by turquoise waters and the sea floor shimmers with the sunlight. The shallow, pristinely clear waters of the Bahamas are teeming with sea life, making the Bahamas is one of the best places for underwater exploration. There are excursions available to suit every skill level, whether you’re an expert or if this is your first time snorkeling or diving. Remember to protect yourself and the ocean by choosing a reef-safe sunscreen.
You’re in luck! One of the best places to swim with sea turtles in the wild is right next to the Grand Hyatt® — Cable Beach! The Bahamas are extremely fortunate to have five of the world’s seven species of sea turtles, including greens, hawksbills, loggerheads, olive ridleys, and leatherbacks. While they are easy to spot, these turtles are all protected species. If they happen to be curious about you, please do not to touch them. Just enjoy the sunny lightshow on their shells as they glide by. Green Cay and Deadman’s Reef are also some of the better locations to spot sea turtles.
Atlantis Resort on Paradise Island provides an opportunity to snorkel among the “ruins” of Atlantis and more than 20,000 beautiful deep-reef and pelagic fish, including amberjacks and snappers. Everyone in the 2.7-million-gallon enclosure moves aside for the majestic rays. This is a 60-minute program that allows for 30 minutes of up-close-and-personal snorkeling time.
Off the coast of New Providence and approximately 45 feet down, you’ll find props from two James Bond movies: Tears of Allah, the boat from Never Say Never Again (1983) and the Vulcan bomber from Thunderball (1965). Both are beautifully patinaed and encrusted with a wide variety of amazing corals and sponges. Playful and plentiful multi-colored fish play hide-and-seek among these gorgeous habitats. Bring your eye for detail and underwater camera for this fantastic adventure!
Experienced, open-water or higher certified divers love to explore blue holes — underwater caverns that are formed by limestone erosion. The world-renowned Lost Blue Hole is located off the shore of New Providence and measures more than 100 feet wide and 200 feet straight down! Sea turtles, reef and nurse sharks, rock lobsters, grouper, angelfish, amberjacks, eels, manta rays, yellowtails, and more have been spotted here.

65 steps, in fact! This lush tropical find, complete with palm trees and delightful waterfalls, is one of the top tourist attractions in Nassau. Weathered stone and lush surroundings make it the perfect portrait backdrop. The ascent to the top leads to the highest point in Nassau where you will find Fort Fincastle on Bennet’s Hill.
This attraction appears much like a movie set prop, but there is some very real and costly history to the construction of these grandiose stairs. Given only hand tools, 600 enslaved people toiled in the intense island sun from 1793 to 1794 to carve the Staircase and 100-foot gorge from solid limestone. Tragically, this labor cost some of them their lives. To honor Queen Victoria’s abolishment of slavery in 1837, the stairs were later named The Queen’s Staircase.
Exploring the Staircase is free, but locals are eager to share their knowledge. Be prepared to express your gratitude with a tip.
The Queen’s Staircase is also referred to as The 66 Steps. Today however, there are only 65. The first step was covered while the approach to the bottom of the stairs was being paved.

With shallow waters and a plethora of merchant ships passing New Providence Island, Nassau was perfectly positioned to become the Republic of Pirates.
Politics played an important role as well. After England gave privateers the authority to attack enemy ships, it didn’t take long for privateers to become pirates. Furthermore, FrancoSpanish attacks in 1703 and 1706 caused many of Nassau’s settlers to flee, leaving the privateers to govern. With pirates greatly outnumbering the islanders that remained, Nassau became a virtual who’s who of piracy and began attacking British ships as well.
Finally, King George I appointed Woodes Rodgers to be the Royal Governor of Nassau. Rodgers was tasked with ending piracy and re-establishing British control. He arrived in 1718 offering pardons to all who surrendered, but not everyone took the offer.
The most infamous pirate on New Providence was Edward Teach, but you probably know him as Blackbeard. Climb aboard a replica of Blackbeard’s ship at the Pirates of Nassau Museum to learn more about the Golden Age of Piracy (1690 to 1720).
Legend has it that Blackbeard’s ghost can be seen where the Old Fort Nassau once stood. Others claim that his headless ghost roams the area relentlessly searching for his severed head. Shiver me timbers!
Where there be pirates, there be rum! John Watling’s Distillery is located on the beautiful, historic Buena Vista Estate, which was featured in the James Bond movie Casino Royale. Crafted from hand-cut sugar cane molasses, John Watling’s rum is
known as the “Spirit of the Bahamas.” Tour the facility and the estate. You’ll be singing “Yo ho ho” in no time.
Prefer beer? Head over to the Pirate Republic Brewing Company for an Island Pirate Ale IPA or a Black Beer’d Stout. They offer daily tours of their on-site brewing facility, too.
