Cobblestone streets, old churches, canals, and dreamy landscapes make medieval Bruges a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a charming fairytale town. With so much to do, it’s best to plan ahead. Tour it by foot, horse-drawn carriage, canal boat, or even by rickshaw!
The square is lined with cheerfully colored buildings exhibiting stepped-gable facades characteristic of this medieval style. Climb the 366 steps at the Belfry for incredible views and to see the bells that ring every 15 minutes. A Salvador Dalí exhibit is also housed within the bell tower. Additionally, Jan van Eyck lived and painted in Bruges in the 1400s. Two of his famous oil paintings hang at the Groeninge Museum. Select a lace souvenir from Rococo, established 1883. Walk — or bike — to one of Bruges’ four windmills. Or, take a canal cruise through the city of Ghent and discover Chinese teahouses, 13th-century monasteries, and castles of the Counts.
Taking more than 200 years to build during the 13th to 15th centuries, the Church of Our Lady offers awe-inspiring, mustsee architecture. The nearly 380-foot-tall towering spire makes the church the tallest building in Belgium. Many prized pieces of art can be admired here, including Michelangelo’s twicestolen Madonna and Child marble sculpture, created in 1504.
Lush and romantic, this lake is an impressionist painter’s dream, complete with gliding snow-white swans. Local legend advises walking over the lake bridge with your partner to experience eternal love. Minnewater is the perfect place to relax and restore!
A “Venice of the North.”
Nested at the most inland point of the Aurlandsfjord, the world’s deepest fjord reaching depths of 3,156 feet below sea level, is the beautiful village of Flåm. A study in contrasts, the colossal 5,900-foot-tall fjord mountains appear as gentle giants that protect and dwarf the settlement. Kayak the serene turquois fjord water or adventure inland. There are many ways to revel in this humbling rugged landscape. Hungry? Try a svele or lapp [pronounced svay-la and lop], a batter-based flat cake resembling a pancake that is served folded in half.
One of the world’s steepest standard-gauge railway lines and the #1 tourist attraction in Norway, the Flåm Railway (or Flåmsbana) ascends 2,834 feet from the valley. Take a two-hour round-trip ride from Flåm to Myrdal through tunnels, past the cascading Kjosfossen Waterfall, and visit the railway museum. More daring explorers can exit the train at Vatnahalsen for a birds-eye view of the valley via the Flåm Zipline — the longest zipline (4,530 feet) in Scandinavia and Northern Europe. Travel at speeds up to 60 mph.
Stegastein Viewpoint, that is. See one of the most spectacular panoramic views in the world from this sleek platform! It extends more then 98 feet out from a breathtaking height of 2,132 feet above the fjord waters.
Undredal is the charming nearby village with a population of approximately 110 people and 500 goats! Bright red homes and buildings pepper the lush, verdant landscape here. See the smallest stave church in Europe and be sure to try both the white and brown goat cheeses made here.
