BURNDY and WESCO have worked together to provide the world’s largest oil & gas exploration and production company with the most dependable and robust electrical and grounding solutions in the industry. These products are needed to meet the extreme performance requirements of production, refining, and processing operations in the harsh conditions on the north slope of Alaska. Currently, BURNDY and WESCO are jointly supporting a drill site that is part of the Alaskan Alpine Field. Initial development plans call for 15 wells, with the first becoming operational in early 2018. In addition to the production drill site and onsite facilities, the project includes a 6-mile road, four bridges, 32 miles of pipelines, and miles of communications and electrical infrastructure that tie the site back to the main Alpine facilities. Oil from the site is sent for processing before it travels through Kuparuk to the Trans-Alaska pipeline.

Anchorage Goes Green With LED
The City of Anchorage goes green and replaces high-pressure sodium fixtures with Cree LEDway® streetlights to save energy and costs. Customer Opportunity
The Alaskan mountains are covered in white, but the streets of Anchorage are turning green from the city’s energy-saving initiative. The first city to embrace LED technology on a large scale, Anchorage will replace 16,000 streetlights—roughly one-quarter of the 150-watt high-pressure sodium (HPS) streetlights—with LEDway® luminaires. The installation will roll out in several phases starting with 4,200 streetlights at the intersection of Aero and Northern Lights Boulevard.
Solution By retrofitting the streetlights to LEDway®, the City of Anchorage will consume 50 percent less energy over the traditional HPS lamps. The energy reduction equates to saving the City and its citizens approximately $360,000 per year. In addition, with more than 100,000 hours of delivered lumens, no relamping, replacement or labor costs, the City will gain additional savings through significantly reduced maintenance costs. “We have studied new lighting technology extensively over the past several months to validate energy and maintenance costs savings,” said Mark Begich, U.S. Senator and former Mayor of Anchorage. “We also conducted a public survey that showed our residents overwhelmingly approve of the new white LED lighting.”

WESCO CONNECT REWARDS
“This initiative will not only result in lower energy bills, but will contribute to the preservation of our unique Alaskan ecologies.” Mark Begich, U.S. Senator and former Mayor of Anchorage
Benefits In addition to the energy and cost savings, visibility for vehicular and pedestrian traffic is dramatically improved through the use of patented NanoOptic® technology. NanoOptic® technology layers light into the desired target zone for superior uniformity and control—increasing safety on the streets. The integrated backlight control helps preserve the uniqueness of Alaska’s night sky and complies with Dark Sky and Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA) standards. “This initiative will not only result in lower energy bills, but will contribute to the preservation of our unique Alaskan ecologies,” said Begich. By leading the way with LED technology and its benefits, the City of Anchorage is setting new standards for helping reduce the impact on the environment that other municipalities can follow.

5 Rock-Solid Reasons Contractors Should Already Be Rocking LED Fixtures By Alyson Kjeldahl, Industrial Marketing Manager, Current, powered by GE
CHALLENGE: Lighting can be an afterthought when evaluating energy reduction projects—but more and more are looking up to bring energy costs down in their plants and factories. It starts with considerable energy savings and stretches all the way to connected environments enabled by smart lighting fixtures. SOLUTIONS: Five reasons why LEDs should be seriously considered:
1
Energy Savings Can Be Enormous: Production and assembly plants all have one thing in common, and that’s tons of square footage requiring hundreds, even thousands, of lighting fixtures to make sure the job gets done right. The average manufacturing plant still uses linear fluorescent lamps (LFL) or high-intensity discharge (HID) fixtures that aren’t expensive upfront, but rack up significant energy and maintenance costs over time. Industrial high-bay LED fixtures offer a reduction of approximately 50–90 percent in lighting energy use, resulting in utility bills that quickly reflect real savings. The price of industrial LED fixtures has also fallen steadily in recent years, while light output and quality have improved significantly. But, make no mistake, saving a significant amount of energy day after day remains the number one reason for making the switch to LED.
2
Maintenance Is Much Easier: You’d be hard pressed to find a facility manager who likes scaling ladders or commandeering lifts and interrupting production to change burnt-out light bulbs. Relamping can be a monthly, even weekly, chore for large facilities where just getting to the ceiling is its own adventure, not to mention the nagging cost of all those new lamps, the inconvenience of storing them on site, and the added expense of paying people
to install them. Industrial LED fixtures can change everything. Current, powered by GE’s Albeo fixtures are rated up to 100,000 hours of service-life, surpassing the life expectancy of traditional LFL and HID lamps by as much as five times, depending on the operation. The best news is that, as with energy, these savings show up on your bottom-line.
3
It Can Change With You: Current by GE’s Daintree lighting controls coupled with Albeo high-bay fixtures are a workable option for your constantlychanging operation. When racking is relocated, when aisles are re-laid out or when machines and equipment are repositioned on the plant floor, light levels, zones, and light schedules can easily be reconfigured with Daintree ControlScope Manager fixture by fixture to accommodate the new operating environment. This means facility managers can ensure each area of the plant is appropriately lit without getting into expensive and labor-intensive reconfigurations of fixture layouts. If frequent plant re-configurations are the norm for your factory, Albeo fixtures with Daintree could be the right solution for you.
4
Rebates Are Still Available: Many U.S. utility companies and government entities continue to offer substantial rebates for energy-efficient lighting and controls upgrades. Details vary from state to state, but most utilities maintain energy programs for industrial companies, and the
savings can be significant. At the same time, it can be quite time-consuming to manage the rebate process and see it through the proper approval channels, so be sure to ask your lighting partner or energy service company (ESCO) to help you navigate the process and ensure the maximum incentive is captured. Some partners are even prepared to take on this paperwork for you. For now, a good place to start is at energy.gov where you’ll find a DOE-hosted database of tax credits, rebates and savings opportunities that can be filtered by state and project category.
5
It Leads to Even Greater Savings: LED fixtures alone can save you plenty, but solutions like Current by GE’s Daintree wireless lighting controls can take your energy efficiency to another level. By automatically dimming fixtures when there is ample daylight or by task tuning lights by specified zones, lighting controls offer facility and energy managers a way to put their illumination needs on autopilot while reducing their annual energy spend by as much as 20 percent on top of the savings already delivered by LEDs. It’s all about the insight and functionality to optimize your facility or multisite portfolio, and it’s the first step toward a truly intelligent environment where connected fixtures link your people and processes to the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and the endless possibilities it presents, from reducing downtime and disruptions to improving safety to using data to inform better decisions.
RESULTS: An LED lighting upgrade is just what your site needs to start working smarter, not harder. For contractors, the question isn’t if LED, but when. Get started on the LED and controls journey today.

A Scalable, Energy-Efficient Data Center Panduit’s Data Center Solution helped PGS drive cost reduction and operational efficiencies to support its environmental initiatives and strategic objectives Business Challenges
Panduit Solution
Like its products, the oil and gas industry is volatile, requiring service providers such as PGS to deliver on major projects with little advanced notice and tight deadlines. PGS’ three main data centers process enormous amounts of 2D, 3D, and 4D seismic and reservoir imaging data provided by its ships to fulfill specific customer and competitor requests, and to generate proprietary information that the company markets and sells.
Improved thermal management was on the top of PGS’ list. Because its servers handle extremely large data processing loads, each cabinet generates about 18 kilowatts of heat—a major challenge. PGS learned about Panduit’s Net-Access™ cabinets with a passive vertical exhaust system (VES), which channels heated server exhaust air directly into the hot air return plenum, separating it from the cool air supply. The segregation of hot and cool air allows the data center to operate at a higher temperature set point, which reduces energy consumption of the cooling system.
Occupying a leased 10,000 square feet space, PGS’ Houston data center was approaching the limits of its capacity to accommodate more servers and storage, primarily due to issues with heat dissipation. More than Panduit’s R&D team set up a model to show PGS how Net-Access cabinets 20 air conditioning units consumed an excessive amount of energy, with VES efficiently dissipate heat. Further, once PGS supplied parameters money, and space. In addition to working in an uncomfortably warm for its servers and processing loads, the Panduit team configured the environment, PGS’ IT team had concerns about damage to servers model to meet those specifications and conducted a series of tests. With from overheating. Furthermore, the need to place air conditioners in the doors closed, the Net-Access cabinet, loaded with 42 servers, ran 15° a specific configuration to achieve effective cooler than PGS’ existing system with the cabinet After only six weeks in airflow restricted layout options for the space. doors open. These constraints threatened PGS’ ability to the co-located facility, PGS PGS selected Panduit’s High Speed Data Transport expand its business and to meet customers’ high systems for internal data transport and for the saw a decrease in power expectations. enterprise network. The resilience, reduce operating costs, simplify maintenance, and provide Panduit StructuredGround™ system improves network reliability and room to expand. protects equipment and personnel.
Strategic Objectives PGS had several high-level goals for the new facility. Because data processing is a revenue generator for the company, it was critical to optimize space utilization to accommodate growth goals.
Because the lease on the old facility was expiring, it was necessary to complete the new data center implementation in three weeks. Panduit partners completed the work on time, ensuring a smooth transition.
Business Benefits
Highly variable requirements for IT services from the business units and the intensive computing involved in seismic data processing required the new data center to enable local and remote management to ensure immediate response and rapid turnarounds.
PGS achieved measurable benefits and strategic advantages from the Panduit Intelligent Data Center Solution. After only six weeks in the colocated facility, PGS saw a decrease in power consumption of 27% and expects that figure to increase over time.
To achieve competitive differentiation, PGS wanted to ensure top performance and reliability of its infrastructure to meet customer needs for high-quality results under tight deadlines. This required the company to adopt the latest information technology and expand its processing capacity—making flexibility and future-proofing essential.
The highly efficient, manageable, and scalable Intelligent Data Center Solution allows PGS to operate the same server and storage resources in about half the space of the former location, while improving thermal management, flexibility, and IT control.
Another strategic aim was to support its corporate environmental policy through improved energy efficiency.

Going the Distance in the Great Northwest Lean construction services from eFab™ by Thomas & Betts help save time, streamline processes and reduce waste in a major headquarters office project. Try to picture 10 miles of wire basket tray. That’s more than the length of 44 of the world’s largest commercial cruise ships lined up in a row, bow to stern. It’s difficult to envision, but that’s how much QuickTurn® basket tray from Thomas & Betts was installed in a major technology company’s new corporate headquarters that opened in Northern California last year. And few people will ever see any of it, because all of it is hidden under the floor, routing the electrical wiring throughout the more than 2.75-million-square-foot facility.
Fully engineered, turnkey design With a project of this magnitude, the last thing the electrical contractor needed was to have electricians spending valuable time building basket tray sections on the job site. Instead, they left that — and the engineering — up to the specialists at eFab by Thomas & Betts, who delivered a fully engineered, turnkey design for the subfloor basket tray wire management solution. “We started the engineering phase of the project three years ago,” said John Archer, senior program manager for eFab by Thomas & Betts. “Then we prefabricated the basket tray sections into complete kits, including everything down to nuts, bolts, washers and an installation tool, specifically for each different area of the building. The kits were delivered to the jobsite just in time for installation over the course of a year, wrapping up about June 2017.”
Prefabricated, custom-labeled, ready-toinstall kits with integrated bonding The shrink-wrapped, palletized, ready-to-install kits featured colorcoded labels that indicated different elevation changes and crosssections. Each kit also had a QR code that linked to the applicable installation drawings and identified the specific location in the building where the kit was to be installed. With the elevation changes that were involved in the project, not all sections of the basket tray physically connect to one another. To address grounding continuity, the eFab group also prefabricated a custom bonding solution, which was integrated into the basket tray kits for those specific sections.
Reduced packaging and less waste While the time savings and streamlined process afforded by prefabrication and just-in-time, custom-labeled delivery were significant, another benefit the customer really appreciated was the reduction of waste on the jobsite, according to Archer. “This is an environmentally friendly facility,” he said. “The building is cutting-edge energy efficient with solar arrays all over the roof and a large outdoor park. In keeping with the overall green mission, the project manager was very happy not to end up with a lot of jobsite scrap or 10 miles of empty cardboard boxes from the 10 miles of basket tray that would create disposal issues.” As a separate project at this same facility, the T&B eFab group worked with WESCO to supply custom Carlon® wiring whips for installation in the parking structure. Because the whips came pre-terminated with specified fittings, this solution offered the contractor time savings, SKU reduction and, again, less waste on the job site.
