See Alaska in Style

Aboard the Celebrity Eclipse! Welcome aboard! And set your sights on the WESCO 2018 VIP Customer Loyalty destination — a 6-day, 7-night Alaskan cruise aboard the magnificent Celebrity Eclipse. In this issue we provide an overview of what’s in store for you, aboard ship and on shore in the ports of call.

Greetings

from WESCO VIP Headquarters A delighted, sun-kissed group of WESCO customers have just returned home from our 2017 VIP Program travel destination, the Big Island of Hawaii. These customers were joined by WESCO sales teams, executive leaders, and key supplier partners for six unforgettable nights at the Fairmont Orchid. Our guests adventured through the rainforest on ATV’s, hiked to pristine waterfalls, toured lava churning volcanoes, snorkeled with sea turtles, and saw some of earth’s most unimaginable landscapes from a bird’s eye view. At the same time, old friends were reunited and new friendships were forged. We hula danced at a traditional Hawaiian luau, enjoyed scrumptious meals from local farms, gardens, and orchards, and got the dance floor rocking alongside a trendy DJ and jaw-dropping band.

While we could go on forever discussing the incredible memories of our travel experience, we would like to shift focus to our 2018 VIP Program, Alaskan Adventure! While the destination and terrain may be vastly different from Hawaii, the level of service, unforgettable excursions, delectable dining options, and overall experience are sure to exceed your expectations! After all, this is WESCO VIP. If you haven’t yet experienced a VIP trip, we can’t wait until you do. Goals have been set and the rules of the program have been communicated. What’s left to do? Now is the time to develop a plan with your local WESCO team to get you to your goal. Also, be sure to frequently log in the WESCO Loyalty website to track your performance and stay up to date on the latest news. Lastly, watch your email and mailbox for special communications and opportunities that come along with being a WESCO VIP.

Alaskan History Seward's Folly!

On March 30, 1867, The United States bought the Alaskan Territory from Russia for $7 million. US Secretary of State William Seward, a proponent of American expansion, promoted the transaction. Cash-strapped Russia had colonized Alaska roughly one century earlier but was eager to sell its North American interests to the deep-pocketed Yanks. “Seward’s Folly” was roundly criticized at home, but the Secretary would be justified. In 1898, prospectors discovered gold in Alaska, sparking a rush to settle the land. At two cents an acre, Seward’s gamble proved to be America’s greatest real estate deal this side of the Louisiana Purchase.

A Scalable, Energy-Efficient Data Center Panduit’s Data Center Solution helped PGS drive cost reduction and operational efficiencies to support its environmental initiatives and strategic objectives Business Challenges

Panduit Solution

Like its products, the oil and gas industry is volatile, requiring service providers such as PGS to deliver on major projects with little advanced notice and tight deadlines. PGS’ three main data centers process enormous amounts of 2D, 3D, and 4D seismic and reservoir imaging data provided by its ships to fulfill specific customer and competitor requests, and to generate proprietary information that the company markets and sells.

Improved thermal management was on the top of PGS’ list. Because its servers handle extremely large data processing loads, each cabinet generates about 18 kilowatts of heat—a major challenge. PGS learned about Panduit’s Net-Access™ cabinets with a passive vertical exhaust system (VES), which channels heated server exhaust air directly into the hot air return plenum, separating it from the cool air supply. The segregation of hot and cool air allows the data center to operate at a higher temperature set point, which reduces energy consumption of the cooling system.

Occupying a leased 10,000 square feet space, PGS’ Houston data center was approaching the limits of its capacity to accommodate more servers and storage, primarily due to issues with heat dissipation. More than Panduit’s R&D team set up a model to show PGS how Net-Access cabinets 20 air conditioning units consumed an excessive amount of energy, with VES efficiently dissipate heat. Further, once PGS supplied parameters money, and space. In addition to working in an uncomfortably warm for its servers and processing loads, the Panduit team configured the environment, PGS’ IT team had concerns about damage to servers model to meet those specifications and conducted a series of tests. With from overheating. Furthermore, the need to place air conditioners in the doors closed, the Net-Access cabinet, loaded with 42 servers, ran 15° a specific configuration to achieve effective cooler than PGS’ existing system with the cabinet After only six weeks in airflow restricted layout options for the space. doors open. These constraints threatened PGS’ ability to the co-located facility, PGS PGS selected Panduit’s High Speed Data Transport expand its business and to meet customers’ high systems for internal data transport and for the saw a decrease in power expectations. enterprise network. The full solution encompasses consumption of 27% The company decided to create a new data FiberRunner® overhead pathways, which allow fiber center that could deliver higher efficiency and and copper to be managed in the same trays. The resilience, reduce operating costs, simplify maintenance, and provide Panduit StructuredGround™ system improves network reliability and room to expand. protects equipment and personnel.

Strategic Objectives PGS had several high-level goals for the new facility. Because data processing is a revenue generator for the company, it was critical to optimize space utilization to accommodate growth goals.

Because the lease on the old facility was expiring, it was necessary to complete the new data center implementation in three weeks. Panduit partners completed the work on time, ensuring a smooth transition.

Business Benefits

Highly variable requirements for IT services from the business units and the intensive computing involved in seismic data processing required the new data center to enable local and remote management to ensure immediate response and rapid turnarounds.

PGS achieved measurable benefits and strategic advantages from the Panduit Intelligent Data Center Solution. After only six weeks in the colocated facility, PGS saw a decrease in power consumption of 27% and expects that figure to increase over time.

To achieve competitive differentiation, PGS wanted to ensure top performance and reliability of its infrastructure to meet customer needs for high-quality results under tight deadlines. This required the company to adopt the latest information technology and expand its processing capacity—making flexibility and future-proofing essential.

The highly efficient, manageable, and scalable Intelligent Data Center Solution allows PGS to operate the same server and storage resources in about half the space of the former location, while improving thermal management, flexibility, and IT control.

Another strategic aim was to support its corporate environmental policy through improved energy efficiency.

Going the Distance in the Great Northwest Lean construction services from eFab™ by Thomas & Betts help save time, streamline processes and reduce waste in a major headquarters office project. Try to picture 10 miles of wire basket tray. That’s more than the length of 44 of the world’s largest commercial cruise ships lined up in a row, bow to stern. It’s difficult to envision, but that’s how much QuickTurn® basket tray from Thomas & Betts was installed in a major technology company’s new corporate headquarters that opened in Northern California last year. And few people will ever see any of it, because all of it is hidden under the floor, routing the electrical wiring throughout the more than 2.75-million-square-foot facility.

Fully engineered, turnkey design With a project of this magnitude, the last thing the electrical contractor needed was to have electricians spending valuable time building basket tray sections on the job site. Instead, they left that — and the engineering — up to the specialists at eFab by Thomas & Betts, who delivered a fully engineered, turnkey design for the subfloor basket tray wire management solution. “We started the engineering phase of the project three years ago,” said John Archer, senior program manager for eFab by Thomas & Betts. “Then we prefabricated the basket tray sections into complete kits, including everything down to nuts, bolts, washers and an installation tool, specifically for each different area of the building. The kits were delivered to the jobsite just in time for installation over the course of a year, wrapping up about June 2017.”

Prefabricated, custom-labeled, ready-toinstall kits with integrated bonding The shrink-wrapped, palletized, ready-to-install kits featured colorcoded labels that indicated different elevation changes and crosssections. Each kit also had a QR code that linked to the applicable installation drawings and identified the specific location in the building where the kit was to be installed. With the elevation changes that were involved in the project, not all sections of the basket tray physically connect to one another. To address grounding continuity, the eFab group also prefabricated a custom bonding solution, which was integrated into the basket tray kits for those specific sections.

Reduced packaging and less waste While the time savings and streamlined process afforded by prefabrication and just-in-time, custom-labeled delivery were significant, another benefit the customer really appreciated was the reduction of waste on the jobsite, according to Archer. “This is an environmentally friendly facility,” he said. “The building is cutting-edge energy efficient with solar arrays all over the roof and a large outdoor park. In keeping with the overall green mission, the project manager was very happy not to end up with a lot of jobsite scrap or 10 miles of empty cardboard boxes from the 10 miles of basket tray that would create disposal issues.” As a separate project at this same facility, the T&B eFab group worked with WESCO to supply custom Carlon® wiring whips for installation in the parking structure. Because the whips came pre-terminated with specified fittings, this solution offered the contractor time savings, SKU reduction and, again, less waste on the job site.

Reliable SYSTIMAX and Uniprise solutions lay the foundations for network efficiency and growth at a multi-site North Carolina campus CUSTOMER CHALLENGE: A community college’s existing mixed cabling could not support their growth and technology ambitions, so the college looked for a single source supplier to meet its new and demanding requirements. Inconsistent cabling was causing some serious system issues and its various suppliers made troubleshooting a difficult process. With their increasing emphasis on technology based education, they needed a network infrastructure that helped unify the many different IT systems essential to implement their future plans.

SOLUTION: After analyzing requirements and comparing a short list of single source suppliers, they chose CommScope for its extensive, integrated range of proven, high-performance copper and fiber solutions. CommScope’s LazrSPEED 300 multimode fiber solution was chosen for backbone connections across sites and within larger buildings, exceeding specifications of the OM3 fiber standard, providing 10 Gb/s data transmission speeds over distances up to 300 meters without need for expensive single mode electronics. The LazrSPEED backbones link telecommunication rooms located across all sites. From the communications rooms, GigaSPEED XL was used to connect outlets throughout the buildings, exceeding the specifications of the Category 6 cabling standard and delivering 1Gb/s performance from end to end in a 100 meter connection with up to six connectors. RESULTS: In the end, CommScope delivered a reliable unified infrastructure with required performance as a foundation for college growth plans. In addition, they radically reduced infrastructure issues—moves, adds and changes are faster with simpler troubleshooting.
