Margin MATTERS

By Bob Pessamato and Rick Gunter, Pricing Team Did you know? The best way to protect margin is to use system pricing, especially when costs rise. Wire, Cable, and Conduit tends to have volatile costs, and our pricing rules and contracts are usually set up to account for this. We tend to lose margin if an order is processed at a previous price or a lower customer requested price, instead of the updated system price. This is contractual in Global Accounts, and so the methodology of changing to the updated price is already agreed upon by the customer. The top 3 margin initiatives for Wire, Cable, and Conduit are: • Belden Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) Sales Solution • Portable Cord campaign (coming soon)

• Global Account SLAP Campaign – developing a Wire and Cable specific “Strategic Lead Acceleration Program” kit to be utilized by the Global Account Managers (coming soon) 1

• A cable combats voltage spikes through its wall thickness and the insulation material used. Belden’s VFD cable uses thick XLP insulation which has much lower capacitance than THHN and generic control/tray cables that use PVC. The wall thickness of VFD cable withstands voltage significantly better and cannot melt from heat build-up. • The XLP insulation and lower capacitance also extends transmission distance.

THHN and most generic control/tray cable and single-conductor lead wires are unshielded. Belden’s VFD Cables utilize two highly effective shielding options; 100% coverage foil shield along with an 85% braid shield or Dual 5mm Copper Tape to prevent noise from radiating from the VFD system and interfering with surrounding networking, instrumentation, wireless communication, and industrial devices. • Belden’s VFD cable uses thick XLP insulation which has much lower capacitance than THHN and generic control/tray cables that use PVC.

Winner’s Circle

The Wire, Cable and Conduit Team salutes our recent big wins and the people responsible. Take a bow, folks! n PTW ($400K) n NOKIA ($650K)

Submitted by: Matt Mischik (Commodity Manager – East) Location/Branch: Dallas DC/CBC Contributor: Vicki Williams Working on RFQ for 18 month project with estimated usage of $15K-20K per month of 6/3 SOOW… Secured levels from General Cable 10% below current costs… Have inside track to secure this business.

n TRANSBAY CORRIDOR ($252K)

Submitted by: Matt Mischik (Commodity Manager – East) Location/Branch: Odessa, TX Most impactful win for Commodity Team in the East Region… PTW has multiple set ups in the field that require next day turnaround for PVC coated pipe; key to stock accordingly… Worked with Vince Victor (Sales Manager) to determine customer needs over 30-day period… Negotiated 20% lower buy out costs with Cal Conduit to support these ongoing projects… Continue to sell customer from loaded replacement costs; realizing 40% billing margin % each order (estimated $400K in sales Feb/March timeframe).

Submitted by: Kim Cushing (Industrial Wire & Cable Specialist) Location/Branch: Concord, CA Contributors: Shawn McIntyre / Phil Walters / Jesse Watkins

n PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE AIRPORT ($116K)

Great example of a niche product and a cooperative effort against Anixter starting with Calvert running through the Industrial Wire & Cable Specialist Team out to the local branch.

Lighting cable order negotiated for very special pricing with Larry Wood… Now bidding another project for the same product and same manufacturer.

n SAULSBURY ($95K)

n CITY OF PHOENIX TRAFFIC DEPARTMENT ($65K)

Industrial tray and power cables… Identified a solution to displace the incumbent (HWC had been writing with a different distributor)… Obtained special pricing from Nexans to win the order at 6% higher margin than previous best price.

We quoted through Lake Cable a 42/c composite IMSA cable which we won with a 40% profit margin… This is a very odd construction and we have since written this order over several times.
